  • Murder: Police invite Senator Sani for questioning

Kaduna State Police Commissioner Austin Iwar has invited Senator Shehu Sani for questioning in a homicide investigation.

The police said he is a person of interest to the probe and requested the kaduba Central senator to report on April 30.

A letter, with ref.  no. CR: 2000/KDS/VOL 5H/72 was routed through the Clerk of the National Assembly. A copy of it was sent to Senate President Bukola Saraki.

“This is in connection with a case of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide transferred to this office by 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Kaduna, alongside with exhibit audio CD in which your name was mentioned by the principal suspect,” CP Iwar said in a letter to Sani.

But the Senator alleged that the Kaduna State government had concluded plans to frame him up with a murder case, necessitating the move by the police to label him as person of interest.

One Isa Garba, one of the suspects in a murder case was said to have implicated the federal lawmaker.

It was gathered that Sani’s name was mentioned when the suspect, said to have participated in the killings of one Lawal Madugu, implicated another person called Bashir Hamdada.

Although he did not pick telephone calls put across to him by our Correspondent, the police commissioner was reported to have said that the case was not politically-motivated.

Pastor remanded for alleged murder of three

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday remanded Pastor Chidiebere Okoroafor in prison custody for the alleged murder of three members of his church.

Okoroafor, who was paraded by the police command last Friday, was alleged to have killed three members.

A drama occurred at the courtroom when he was arraigned. He knelt down and said: “Yes My Lord, I killed Ada. I also pushed Uluoma, she fell down and hit her head on the floor, but I didn’t kill the baby. I just left her there.

“Please forgive me My Lord, I did not do it intentionally. I won’t do it again.”

The defendant was not represented by a counsel.

After the drama, the Magistrate, K.A. Braide, said he lacked jurisdiction to hear the case and urged the prosecutor, G.A. Amadi, “to facilitate his transfer to the High Court where he will be arraigned and properly dealt with.”

She adjourned the matter till March 27 for mention.

The charge reads: “That you Pastor Chidebere Okoroafor on the 11th day of December, 2017 at Izuoma community Oyigbo within the Port Harcourt Magisterial District did murder Ada Concila Ezenwa by strangling her till she died and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 2 Laws of Rivers State Nigeria 1999.

“That you Pastor Chidebere Okoroafor on the 11th day of December, 2017 at Egberu village, Afam within the Port Harcourt Magisterial District did murder Uluoma Onweagba by strangling her till she died and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 2 Laws of Rivers State Nigeria 1999.

  • Murder: Court grants Olukere bail

    Murder: Court grants Olukere bail

Reprieve has come the way of the Olukere of Ikere-Ekiti, Oba Ganiyu Ayodele Obasoyin, who had been remanded in prison custody for nearly two months for alleged murder.

An Ekiti State High Court on Friday granted the traditional ruler bail in the sum of N5 million and two sureties in the like sum.

Justice Abiodun Adesodun in his ruling on the bail application filed by the Olukere said the application had merit and subsequently granted the defendant bail.

Apart from the N5 million bail bond to be fulfilled by the monarch, Justice Adesodun ruled that the two sureties must swear to affidavits and produce evidence of tax clearance covering three years.

He further held that one of the sureties must produce evidence of land ownership within the jurisdiction of the court.

Olukere’s lead counsel, Mr. Morakinyo Ogele said: “This ruling is symbolic and historic; symbolic in the sense that it is in favour of justice and historic in the sense that it will enter into the judicial history of Ekiti.

“We believe that will be done eventually in this case.”

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Kolapo Kolade, left the court before Justice Adesodun finished delivering the ruling.

Although the judge noted that the offences for which the Olukere was charged were grievous in nature, he held that the royal father was entitled to bail and resolved the request for bail in his favour.

Justice Adesodun ruled that if released to credible surety, the applicant would not jump bail considering his position as an Oba.

The judge said he had studied the affidavit filed by the defence and the counter-affidavit filed by the prosecution and noted that the grant or refusal of bail was predicated on some factors.

Some of the factors, according to him, include the nature and strength of evidence, severity of the punishment upon conviction, the probability that the accused will not present himself for trial and the likelihood of interfering in the case.

Justice Adesodun held that the grant or refusal of bail was at the discretion of the court but “it must be done judicially and judiciously.”

Although the monarch was not present in court on Friday, some of his chiefs, family members and supporters celebrated in hushed tones as the court rose.

  • Falana seeks Attorneys General’s probe for failing to arraign murder suspects

Falana seeks Attorneys General’s probe for failing to arraign murder suspects

Activists Lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has requested the Nigerian Bar Association to investigate Attorneys General, who refused to prosecute murder suspects connected with the death of over 1,632 people between 1999 and 2017.

The request was contained in a letter dated February 16 written to NBA President, Abubakar Mahmud.

Falana said he made the request having confirmed that the rate of killings in the country has been on the ascendancy due to the refusal of several state Attorneys-General to prosecute murder suspects due to political pressure or sheer negligence of duty.

Hailing the NBA leadership for deeming it fit to conduct an inquiry into the reckless killing of unarmed people in Benue State, he said it was disturbing that the NBA has failed to monitor the prosecution of the scores of murder  suspects arrested by the police or indicted  by the judicial and administrative panels of inquiry set up by the federal and state governments to probe violent civil disturbances in the country.

Falana contended that since culpable homicide or murder is a state offence, the Attorneys-General of states ought to have ensured that the suspects arrested by the security agencies were prosecuted in line with the powers conferred on them by section 211 of the Constitution.

“Having failed to prosecute the murder suspects, the Chief Law Officers of the states have breached their Oaths of Office and subverted the Rule of Law. It may interest you to know that some Attorneys-General have a penchant for terminating murder charges by filing nolle prosequi.

“In order to put an end to the culture of impunity in the country, we are compelled to request the NBA to investigate the refusal of the Attorneys-General to prosecute the criminal elements who have engaged in the reckless killing of innocent citizens in several states of the federation,” the activist said.

He said unless the NBA is prepared to sanction Attorneys-General, who fail or refuse to prosecute the murder suspects, the reckless killing of people by killer squads and armed bandits will continue unabated.

Falana listed some of what he described as acts of negligence on the part of the prosecutorial authorities.

He said: “Between 1999 and 2007, an official squad was fingered in the unlawful elimination of not less than 70 people in Gombe State. The murder charges filed against the suspects by  the police were struck out by the courts at the instance of the state government. The late Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan, who demanded for the prosecution of the culprits was charged with  giving false information to the police by the state government.

“The members of an official squad which killed some politicians and students in Ekiti State from 2003-2006 were arrested by the police and charged with murder at the High Court sitting at Ado Ekiti…”

  • Two arrested for robbery, murder

    Two arrested for robbery, murder

The operatives of the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) have arrested two dangerous hoodlums for armed robbery and murder.

The two suspects are Daniel John Igwe, 23 and Collins Archibong while the third suspect Bassy is still at large.

The suspects were said to have invaded the premises of a Lagos-based company and carted away newly delivered laptops, killing as security man called Abubakar Isiaka, who confronted them during the operation.

The suspects also took the late slain security man’s mobile phone away.

It was learnt that following a petition by the company to the police, CP Edgal Imohimi directed the SIB operatives to fish out the criminals leading to their arrest.

In his confession, Daniel said he was lured into crime because he was idle and wanted to get quick money to buy tools to start a mechanic workshop, a job he claimed to have learnt a few years ago.

Pleading for leniency, the second suspect, Collins, said he did not finish secondary school, hence, he joined Daniel to commit the crime out of ignorance and pleaded for leniency.

The prosecutor, Olasunkanmi Bamikole, told the court that the accused committed the offence on January 30, at Ijadu village in Ado Ekiti.

He said the suspect mistook the deceased for an enemy and killed him.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 325 of the Criminal Code Cap C16 Law of Ekiti State 2012.

The Magistrate, Mrs. Modupe Afeniforo, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison.

The court adjourned the case till March 2, pending legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP).

  • Our girls; murder; naira

    Our girls; murder; naira

Our Girls are still missing since April 15, 2014. Pray for their return.

Mixed messages of incompetence and indifference from government.

The figure ‘70+’ is a ‘murdered Benue farmer citizens’ number with 73+ millstones around the government’s neck as it fails miserably to deal with the plot that unleashed the reign of terror imposed by Fulani herdsmen’s unlimited, nationwide unprovoked and premeditated attacks amounting to the Fulani herdsmen’s war- my subject over 30 years. Are they singing to an international agenda as the effect is cross-continent reaching even East Africa. The deaths of soldiers and policeman added to more than a total of 100,000 ‘bloodied civilians’ amounts to a war as I have said for many years, and confirmed by Prof Wole Soyinka. The Vietnam War claimed 54,000 US soldiers. Our ECOMOG War claimed between 3,000 (government figures) and 12,000 (non-government) estimates. Some journalist or researcher should go back and total the almost daily reports of five, 10, 20, 300 deaths in the news reports of the Fulani herdsmen War for 10, 20yrs. What will be the final death count and what is our total cost for unity? Are the perpetrators ghosts and the killing fake or phantom to always automatically escape arrest? Whither Nigeria. Only when a defence to the senseless murders is planned, it is torn down as being terrorist. Our words are the wrong way around. The attacker is the terrorist; the defence strategist is the counter-terrorist. In Nigeria we specialise in turning victims into accused and terrorists into tribal heroes. Stop the killing!!

Congratulations, Nigeria made the targeted $40b by beginning 2018 during economic hardship. The first aid care, under the ‘save the naira’ policy of Buhari and CBN support for the naira. Phase one has paid off. Phase two will be easier with the hike in oil price to nearly $70/barrel which will boost our reserves to a targeted $80-100b by April 2019 if not Dec 2018. Phase three must go hand in hand and that is to get the naira to ‘crash back’ to N150:$1 or lower to destabilize the forex hoarders. We should recommend a CBN-led forced fall of N1 naira per day to return to the golden age of N1:$1.5 by Dec 31, 2018. Ibrahim Babangida crippled Nigeria when he halved the naira value overnight and skyrocketed interest rates –a presidential knife in Nigeria’s back. Can we reverse that blow also overnight? Or perhaps improve at N1 per 1-2days to achieve N130: $1 by Dec 31? No other government has dedicated such efforts to reversing losses inflicted on the naira.

The unpredicted fall and now spectacular rise in oil price towards $70+ confounds ‘doom and nay-sayers’. However that $70barrel cost should not make our oil imports more expensive if our own oil is exported to be refined. The real problem is our tragic incompetence as a nation, to in four years, get its refineries up to 150% production locally to combat manmade paralytic Christmas and New Year shortages.

The president’s dismissal of the entire efforts to restructure is an insult, painful, but predictable given the benefits he and his groupings, ethnic and otherwise, gain from the power accrued under the status quo since 1956. It is deeply saddening to millions of victims of political and military fiat which lopsidedly created states and hundreds of LGAs to favour certain parts of Nigeria, arrogated huge swaths of the budget to itself and giving power to few. It speaks volumes of the paralyzing and blinding nature of the office of the president to any modern and citizen targeted progressive agenda. Is it the seat or the occupant at fault?? Probably the combination. It is legitimate in a democracy, even one as fragile as ours, to ask ‘Do you trust your president to make merit and objective decisions and appointments?’ The answer is chillingly negative. The president can change this perception in 2018, but has misjudged the mood by appointing Ahmed Rufai Abubakar as Director General, National Intelligence Agency, NIA, demonstrating his presidential and personal rigidity to his agenda? Trust demands more than ‘Our Unity is Non-negotiable’.

But what is the current true presidential vision and mission for Nigeria? Yes, he wants to restore value and pride to the naira, if possible to N150 and lower which will automatically by definition lift millions out of poverty and ‘re-dignify’ Nigeria while making deserving fools of naira speculators and dollar hoarders -a sound and praiseworthy achievement. However this ‘grand naira recovery scheme’ will be no virtue if the Fulani herdsmen-murdered farmers’ body count skyrockets due to presidential insensitivity, collusion or indifference to the victims of the Fulani herdsmen’s rampage. He has also the self-inflicted burden of an additional hurricane of sectional mainly Fulani ‘Oga at de top’ appointments, difficult to defend in a cosmopolitan country populated with some of the best brains in the world and some of the worst.

Away from the presidential responsibilities and government failures it behoves us to know that the work of our hands, brain, family, community will make the nation great or small in 2018. It is well-known that just one evil-minded corrupt president and evil cohorts [which Nigeria has had an abundance unfortunately], a single corrupt political or business policy or decision in your official capacity, in and out of uniform, can raise or ruin your neighbour, your community or your country. Be vigilant!
