    About Murtala Muhammed airport

    The Murtala Muhammed Airport is made up of the international and the domestic wings.

    The MMIA – Terminal 1, as it is called – is the old terminal inaugurated on March 15, 1979, by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration.

    The MMIA Terminal 2 – otherwise known as the Chinese Terminal – was inaugurated by the Buhari Administration on March 22, 2022, but construction started during the Goodluck Jonathan government.

    The new terminal boasts of modern facilities fitted with biometric compliant facilities, including Rapiscan screening machines, contactless boarding gates and other operational gadgets.

    The terminal has a connecting link with the old terminal already designated for major overhaul.

    The terminal has a limited apron size, which cannot accommodate bigger aircraft.

    Besides, it has only one entrance into its departure hall, which is considered inappropriate.

    In the domestic wing, there is the General Aviation Terminal (GAT), which was rebuilt during the Jonathan Administration.

    It is the outer terminal connecting the Agege MotorWay as its exit route.

    The domestic MMIA Terminal 1 has three wings and protocol lounges.

    The MMA 1 is managed by FAAN.

    MMA 2 is the private terminal managed by Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), which was commissioned by Olusegun Obasanjo on April 7, 2007.

    The MMA 2 hosts most scheduled carriers in the country.

    The MMA 2 is on the Ikeja Air Force Base Road leading to the international terminal.

    Addressing supporters who had come to receive him at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos on his return from Abuja where he had ‘triumphantly’ emerged Interim National Secretary of the successfully hijacked African Democratic Congress (ADC) Airlines, (Sorry, political party), Ogbeni Rauff Aregbesola admonished party members not to engage in exchange of insults with the ruling in All Progressives Congress (APC) or any other party. Rather, the former two-term governor of Osun State and Minister of Interior advised his audience that “When they abuse you or call you names, don’t retaliate. Ask them to tell you if the lives of Nigerians are better for it now than before. Ask questions based on food inflation, the economy, rising cost of living and poverty, among others. Let your debates be issues-based.” Eminently commendable advice from Ogbeni to his party members, but for the fact that there are several viral videos, featuring the sonorous singer and enthusiastic dancer, the Oranmiyan himself, personally leading excited supporters in rendering satiric, abusive and provocative lyrics against his former friends turned adversaries.

    Of course, the politically wily Ogbeni calculates that if attention is focused on the economic hardships his coalition partners accuse the Tinubu administration of causing by its reform policies, large numbers of people will subordinate rational clarity for blurry emotionalism and enthusiastically sway to their anti-Tinubu partisan rhythms. But he forgets that there are also many APC leaders well acquainted with the issues and with the capacity to ask their supporters to ask pertinent questions and further interrogate Aregbesola ‘s interrogators. For instance, did Nigeria’s deep-seated economic crisis start just two years ago with the assumption of office of President Bola Tinubu? Were Nigerians living in paradisiacal El Dorado in the preceding administrations of both the PDP and APC? Despite the fact that the price of crude oil rose to as much as $100 per barrel for a good part of the PDP’s 16 years in power, for instance, till about mid-2024 when it fell drastically, why was it that it was President Muhammadu Buhari administration with considerably reduced revenues that commenced serious work on infrastructure modernization and expansion; an effort now intensified on an unprecedented scale by the present administration?

    Aregbesola’s questioners would further be asked if the country’s current severe electricity supply challenges would not have been more than two-thirds solved to the economy’s immense benefit had the $16 billion purportedly invested in the sector during the PDP’s 16 years in power not gone down the drain with not the slightest dent on the problem? Was the Tinubu administration responsible for the fraudulent privatisation of the assets of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), gifting the country Generation and Distribution companies that so obviously have neither the finance nor the expertise to discharge the responsibilities for which they procured the companies?

    If preceding administrations since 1999  had taken decisive steps to restructure and decentralize the country’s overcentralized security architecture, would the Tinubu administration have inherited the kind of hydra-headed security imbroglio it confronts today? In any case, what creative strategies did Aregbesola himself come up with to improve internal security in Nigeria during his tenure as Minister of Interior? Can he tell us how many jail breaks occurred in several correctional centres across the country under his watch while he wrung his hands in pathetic helplessness? Not only was there a huge backlog of hundreds of uncollected passports, which he inherited as Minister of Interior and which he was unable to find a solution to, but it continued to take interminable periods for citizens to collect their passports under his watch.

    Instructively, it took his successor, the current Minister of Interior, Mr Bolaji Ojo, less than two months to come up with a surgical solution, clear the backlog of accumulated passports and institute a system that enables Nigerians to collect and process their passports today within a two-week time frame. Pray, exactly what bragging rights does the otherwise likeable Ogbeni genuinely have? Why has it taken the Tinubu administration to audaciously commence work on such monumental infrastructure projects as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway or the Badagry-Sokoto Expressway, among several others, although they had reportedly been on the drawing board for almost 40 years? Had such expansive road facilities spreading across several kilometers been emplaced years before now, at a time when it would have been much cheaper to actualize, would the economy not have been elevated to a pedestal for much higher productivity, capacity for employment generation as well as prosperity?

    Of course, infinite examples can be given of how successive governments, and key members of the emergent  anti-Tinubu coalition have been part of one government or the other at the centre or in the States since 1999, cannot be excused from complicity in the bog of inexcusable underdevelopment in which the country is trapped today. Since as interim National Secretary of the ADC, Ogbeni Aregbesola is understandably emerging as the coalition’s Arrowhead, the spotlight will naturally, most of the time be on him. Thus, his trajectory as a public administrator shows that he performed superlatively as Commissioner of Works and Infrastructure in Lagos State between 1999 and 2007 under a governor as team captain, Asiwaju Tinubu, whose competence and capacity he has waxed lyrical about severally in the public space and which are indelibly on record. Also contributory to his success in Lagos, was a strong finance team, particularly the Commissioner for Finance, Mr Wale Edun  and the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr Olayemi Cardoso, who ensured strong financial and budgetary discipline in the Cabinet.

    When he emerged as governor and team captain in Osun, however, the story became a different kettle of fish altogether for Ogbeni.  His admirers tout him as the most ideologically -driven politician of this generation and this may well be so. This writer is himself strongly inclined towards ideology and cannot but be supportive of a leader with emphatic ideological proclivities. But in an emergent post-ideological world with increasing tendency towards technocratic and professional meritocracy, ideology is simply not enough and this was all too evident in Aregbesola’s Osun. Thus, he introduced several laudable and well-meaning welfare programmes such as the school feeding initiative and token cash transfers to the aged. However, his administration in Osun lacked the financial discipline and managerial expertise to run these expansive welfare programmes sustainably while at the same time being able to meet its other governmental obligations to the citizenry.

    It is public knowledge that before long, the relationship between Ogbeni ‘s administration and the state’s public sector workers had soured. Industrial relations was in crisis as the government could barely meet its wage obligations. A large cross-section of the workers were placed on half-salary for the duration of his tenure while the state’s debt burden escalated. While the government built impressive primary and secondary school structures, it seemed that these were not planned with meticulous attention to the school population size or the requisite sustainable maintenance costs of the schools. The truth of the matter is that none of the leading lights in the emergent coalition – Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Nasir El ‘Rufai – can boast a better track record of performance in the various public offices in which they have served than President Tinubu no matter how much they vilify him mostly out of dislike or outright hatred.

    In a widely circulated online post, another Nigerian stated that he was only waiting for the campaigns to start in order to ask members of the anti-Tinubu coalition which of his policies they would discard should they succeed in dislodging him from power as they have continuously boasted. For instance, would they reintroduce the fuel subsidy? Would they scrap the National Students Loan Fund? Would they abolish the National Credit Corporation to provide affordable credit to lower to middle level citizens? Would they halt work on the Lagos – Calabar Highway or the Sokoto-Badagry Expressway? Would they re-introduce multiple foreign exchange markets so that citizens with connections at the Central Bank could continue to reap humongous profit through the exploitation of arbitrage? Would they backtrack on financial autonomy for local government Councils? Would they reintroduce reckless printing of currency by the apex bank to fund federal government spending through ways and means?

  • FAAN retirees to sue management over benefits

    Retired management staff members of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria(FAAN) are set to contest the removal of certain aspect of their retirement benefits at the Lagos High Court.

    Also to be contested is the refusal of the management to review their pension every five years according to the Constitution.

    The planned action is coming on the heels of a 14-day ultimatum issued last week by FAAN branch of Nigerian Union of Pensioners.

    Meanwhile, in preparation for today’s street protest, officials of  FAAN branch of NUP have pasted posters with various inscriptions at strategic areas of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja,Lagos alerting the public to their planned protest and called on FAAN pensioners across the country to converge on FAAN headquarters, Lagos for pre-protest general meeting.

    The branch threatened legal action if some aspects of their  monthly pension/emoluments were not fully restored.

    Briefing reporters at the weekend,  the National Chairman of FAAN branch of NUP and National Administrative Secretary, Comrades Rasak Ope and Emeka Njoku said if at the expiration of the ultimatum and nothing was done to ameliorate their grievances, FAAN pensioners throughout the country would hold a protest.

    According to sources close to the retired management staff members, some of their leaders have been  consulting on plans to sue the management in the court and seek the interpretation of the Section 173 of the 1999 Constitution as it relates to their agitation.

    The aggrieved staff workers, in supporting the FAAN-NUP, noted that since the agreement was entered into in 2008 and the implementation had been respected by all the previous management, except the management under Captain Rabiu Yadudu, who had allegedly violated the agreement signed years before his appointment and also disregard the country’s Constitution as regards the rights of pensioners under the law.

    They claimed that the implementation of the agreement started during the tenure of Mr Richard Aisuebeogun as managing director and others had followed, except CaptainYadudu.

    They reminded those advising the chief executive wrongly that he too would become a retiree and would face the same problem.

    Meanwhile, Captain Yadudu last week visited Imo State Governor  Emeka Ihedioha.

    The visit, which was in continuation of his interaction with critical stakeholders, included FAAN’s Directors of  Engineering Services, Human Resources and Administration, Airport Operations, General Manager, Procurement, Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport Manager.

    The MD and his team also visited  Oyo State Governor Mr. Seyi Makinde to discuss areas of collaboration.

    Capt Yadudu said Owerri Airport is strategic to the development of the Southeast and that there was the need to collaborate to develop infrastructure at the airport.

    Capt Yadudu noted that any investment in the airport would be a catalyst for the development of the state and would create employment for the indigenes.

    Ihedioha expressed his readiness to support the authority to develop critical infrastructure at the airport.

  • FAAN begins investigation on how intruder climbed aircraft at Lagos airport

    THE Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on Friday launched into an investigation of how an intruder climbed an AZMAN  Air plane   awaiting   clearance for  take-off from the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja.

    The plane was on a scheduled flight to Port Harcourt.

    The yet to be identified man had emerged from the blue, ran towards the plane and, in a jiffy, climbed it to the top.

    Astounded passengers and airports workers watched helplessly as the drama unfolded.

    The man’s motive was not immediately clear.

    General Manager, Public Affairs, of FAAN, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu, confirmed the incident.

    She said the pilot of the aircraft marked with the registration number 5N – HAI reported the incident.

    She said: “At about 1009 hours, aviation security officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria arrested an intruder who was sighted trying to climb into an Azman aircraft waiting for clearance from air traffic controllers.

    “The pilot of the Azman aircraft with the registration number 5N-HAI, departing Lagos to Port Harcourt, reported the incident and Avsec officials swiftly responded. The man has been apprehended and is now in Avsec’s custody.

    “The aircraft taxied back to the apron for a thorough check and has departed for Port Harcourt afterwards.

    “The authority is already investigating the incident.”

    The development sparked an outrage at the airport with people expressing concern over security lapses around the airside.

    Many passengers blamed porous security for the infraction which they said had exposed the underbelly of security at the airport.

    Reacting to the development on Friday, a security expert, Group Captain John Ojikutu ( rtd) , wondered how the intruder gained access into the controlled area.

    He said: “How could he have entered the security controlled areas? Either through the airport access controlled areas or from the porous areas, especially the airport perimeter fences that need security enhancement.

    “By the way, how many people working in the airport security controlled areas, especially the airside, are properly documented to have access to those areas?

    “How many of them do we have sufficient background checks on.  I need not say more.”

    Another security expert, Mr. Fortune Idu, said a review of security procedures, prescribing a template on the management of access into critical areas of the airport, has become imperative.

    He said: “It is important to review security procedures immediately and the management of access into critical areas of the airport . Suspension of the staff concerned with this lapse is necessary in order to restore confidence.”

  • Tight security at Lagos airport ahead of Buhari’s visit

    A high number of security operatives were on Wednesday deployed to strategic positions at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, ahead of the working visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to the state.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the security operatives were already at their respective positions at about 7.15am.

    They included officers from the Nigeria Air Force, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

    Also on ground were officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps who were observed controlling the traffic situation within the airport and its environs.

    NAN reports that Buhari is visiting Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria to inaugurate some projects executed by the Lagos State Government.

    The projects are – Institute of Maternal and Child Health (Ayinke House), Lagos Theatre, Oshodi Transport Interchange and International Airport Road as well as 820 Mass Transit buses.

  • Air Force holds route march ahead general elections

    The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Saturday in Lagos assured residents of its commitment to secure the nation as well as ensure security of lives and property during and after the general elections.

    The Air Officer Commanding, NAF Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal Abdulganiyu Adebisi, gave the assurance during the route march organised for its officers and men at the Sam Ethnam Base in Ikeja.

    “The essence of the exercise is not to win prize but to foster espirit de corps and physical fitness of individuals through active participation in exercise of this nature.

    “It is important that we remain both physically and mentally fit to carry out our responsibilities as the defenders of our nation’s territorial integrity and encourage the spirit of sportsmanship in our personnel.

    “Let me use this medium to re-emphasise that you must all be of good conduct in the forthcoming general elections if you go out to vote.

    “Don’t be found wanting of any act that constitutes a breach of electoral law as you exercise your franchise,” he said.

    Adebisi further urged the personnel to carry out their duties as directed and remain good ambassadors of NAF.

    On the election, Adebisi said the command would work in synergy with other security agencies within the state to ensure free, fair and credible elections.

    “Lagosisans should rest assured that there will be adequate security coverage for people to go out and cast their vote in a peaceful and calm environment,” he said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that over 200 officers, Air Men and Women, participated in the exercise which saw them march through the base to the Murtala Muhammed Airport axis and back to the base.

    A large number of security operatives were on Saturday deployed to strategic positions at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, ahead of the today’s visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to the state.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the security operatives were already at their respective positions at about 6.30 a.m.

    They included officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

    Also on ground were officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, who were controlling the traffic situation within the airport and its environs.

    NAN reports that Buhari, the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Feb. 16, Presidential Election, is coming to Lagos, the nation’s commercial capital, to campaign for his re-election.

    He is scheduled to visit the Palace of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, State House, Marina and will later address APC supporters at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, in continuation of his Next Level campaign.

  • Why Atiku travelled to USA – Obi

    The running mate to Alhaji Abubakar Atiku in next month’s presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi, said on Friday that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer is not in the USA to prove any point to anyone.

    Obi told reporters at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, that Atiku travelled to Washington DC because it was necessary for him to do so.

    The former governor of Anambra State expressed surprise at the dust generated by Atiku’s trip.

    His words: “Though he does over 90% of his consultations at home and among Nigerians, now and then, he has to travel to meet different groups, especially those that will be of assistance in the new Nigerian project.”

    Obi said that Atiku was pre-occupied on how to create jobs, reduce unemployment in Nigeria, abolish poverty and re-create the Nigerian economy in order to make Nigeria start working again.

    He said: “his trip is about engaging partners because he wants to hit the ground running without wasting unnecessary time.

  • Ambode apprehends motorists for driving against traffic

    Some lawless motorists who drove against traffic along the Murtala Muhammed Airport Road, Ikeja got a raw deal from Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday as he came down hard on them for flagrant abuse of the state traffic laws.

    The governor who returned from Abuja after attending the inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council was shocked at the manner some motorists drove ‘one way’ to beat the traffic along the Air-force Base inward International Airport Road, Ikeja.

    He was particularly angry that one of the offenders, an army personnel, who drove a space bus with registration number JJJ 290 AC, choose to blatantly contravene the law.

    On sighting the vehicle, Ambode alighted from his car and reprimanded the officer for showing bad example contrary to what the Nigeria Army is known for.

    Another offender, who drove a saloon car with registration number LSR 445 ER, also got some schooling from the governor for breaking the law regardless of the dangers involved in driving against traffic.

    Ambode immediately ordered for the vehicles to be impounded, while also directing that the offenders be prosecuted in line with the provisions of the Traffic Laws.

  • GAT recorded 228,239 passengers last December, says FAAN

    The domestic terminal one of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) Ikeja, also referred to as the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) recorded a total of 228, 239 passengers last December 2018, statistics from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has revealed.

    Statistic made available to journalists in Lagos by the Terminal Manager (TM) MMA, Mr Aderigbigbe Adekunle, 104,168 passengers arrived through the terminal while a total of 124,071passengers were processed out in  the period under review.

    According to Adekunle, the management of the terminal before the Yuletide took several measures aimed at ensuring seamless passenger facilitation by servicing the conveyor belts, cooling systems and screening machines.

    Adekunle said  the upsurge in passenger traffic was envisaged hence it was seamless passenger’s facilitation while some flights were moved to a less busy terminal for easy passenger facilitation.

    He said : “We have two terminals here, the Zulu and Alfa, what we did was to move some flights from the busy terminal to the less busy terminal for passengers comfort. Calabar, Port Harcourt and Uyo flights were moved to the Zulu terminal to ease the Alfa traffic where Airpeace operates from”

    According to Mr. Adekunle, the Agege motor road construction work almost marred the airport free flow of traffic as the construction work had a spilled over to domestic airport users but remarked that it was carefully handled by FAAN officials at they terminal end.

    He further said : “The only challenge was the construction work on the Agege motor road, passengers find it difficult to to move out of the terminal to connect to Agege motor road. The traffic extended to the terminal and passengers expressed bitter experience during the Yuletide period”

    The Terminal Manager also revealed that the automation of the domestic car park by FAAN early last year brought sanity to the area as some people who were not travellers took undue advantage of the non automation of the park to leave their vehicles there.

    He said with the billing system introduced, the number of vehicles at the park had gradually reduced through proper monitoring.

    Mr Adekunle while acknowledging the small size of the domestic car park, explained further that  there was plan by the management of FAAN to construct a new multi storey car park at the domestic Wing noting that when completed will cater for the decongestion of traffic at the terminal.
