  • ‘Regular exercise helps fight chronic diseases’

    A professor of Exercise Physiology at the Bayero University Kano (BUK), Danladi Musa, has said technological advancement as well as cultural and modern lifestyle adopted by man have greatly limited the physical exertion level of an average person.

    Musa made the revelation while delivering the institution’s 39th inaugural lecture held at Musa Abdullahi Auditorium, new campus. The lecture had the theme: Waging war on the deadly quartet and its co-morbidities: A physical activity panacea

    Musa said: “The root cause of metabolic syndrome (MS) and other chronic diseases generally is as a result of physical inactivity.”

    The don noted that the primary outcome of MS is cardiovascular disease (CVD), adding that “most people with MS have insulin resistance, which increases the risk of contracting type 2 diabetes or non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM).”

    He continued: “Excessive energy conversation which the body ultimately converts to fat storage, often gives rise to degenerative disease such as coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus and sudden death.”

    Musa insists on the importance of regular exercise, saying: “The prevention of metabolic syndrome in youth is important as it guarantees better health prospect during adult life”.

    The event was graced by the Vice- Chancellor, Prof Muhammad Bello, top management staff, invited guests, and students.

    Police arrest kidnapper, recover arms in Zamfara

    The Police Command in Zamfara has arrested a suspected kidnapper and cattle rustler, Musa Abdullahi a.k.a Gaugai, the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Muhammad Shehu, has said.

    Shehu disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen in Gusau on Wednesday.

    He said the arrest was part of the command’s sustained efforts to rid the state of banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling and other criminal activities.

    “The suspect was arrested on January 1 by the Anti kidnapping Squad of the command on Operation Sharar Daji around Kunkeli and Chabi villages in Maru Local Government Area of the state.

    “One Ak47 Riffle with five rounds of live ammunition were recovered from the suspect,” he said

    Reports say that the suspect is believed to be one of the members of a kidnap gang terrorising the state who had been declared wanted by the police.

    Shehu further said that the suspect was assisting the command to fish out other members of the gang.

    “The suspect would be charged to court as soon as the command completes its investigation,” the police spokesman added.

    He urged members of the public to always report any suspicious persons or movement around them to the nearest security outpost.

    Six men in court over membership of bag-snatching gang

    The police on Thursday arraigned six men in a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, suspected to be members of a criminal gang that specialised in snatching bags at a black spot in Wuye District of the FCT.

    The suspects are standing trial on a two-count charge bordering on belonging to a criminal gang and criminal conspiracy, offences they denied committing.

    The prosecutor, Mr Donatus Abah, gave the names of the suspects as: Nura Ibrahim, Musa Abdullahi, Bashir Lawal, Biliyaminu Garba, Yahaya Mohammed and Abba Mohammed.

    Abah told the court that the suspects were arrested on Aug. 19 by a police patrol team attached to Wuye Police Division.

    The prosecutor said that during investigation, all the suspects confessed to be members of a criminal gang, that specialised in snatching bags in Wuye District.

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 406,96 and 306 of the Penal Code

    The Magistrate, Eremasi Ebiwari, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N200, 000 each, with one surety each in like sum and adjourned the case until Sept. 12 for hearing.

    Coach Musa Abdullahi is dead

    Former Flying Eagles coach Musa Abdullahi passed away on Sunday afternoon.

    The former U-20 national co-ordinator, Ajakbo Ahmed, who worked with Abdullahi from 2006 till 2007 at the U-20 Canada 2007 World Cup, confirmed the incident to SportingLife.

    The former U-23 assistant coach Musa died at his country home Koto Karfe, Kogi State yesterday few minutes past 3pm  after a long battle with stroke.

    Abdullahi’s  right hand side  has been paralyzed since 2007.

    He has since been buried according to Muslim rite around 5pm at the Koto Karfe burial ground after prayers were offered for his soul.

    He left behind his wife Hajia Bilikisu Musa and four children.

    Abdullahi was appointed as a Deputy Director at the Sports Council in Kogi State when the state was created in 1991 after moving to his country home from Kwara State.

    Abdullahi led the Golden Eaglets to win silver medals in the U-17 FIFA football tournament in Trinidad and Tobago in 2001.

    He was the head coach when Nigeria won the silver medal at the All Africa Games at the Abuja 2003.

    The Kogi State-born administrator was the assistant coach to coach Bonfere Jo when the Dream Team 1 won the Gold medal at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996.

    He was also assistant coach to Fanny Amun when the Golden Eaglets won Gold at the FIFA/Kodal U-17 World Cup in Japan ’93.

    “Coach Musa Abdullahi was a very nice man and he has paid his dues. He has coached national teams. May Allah grant him Aljana Fridous and give his family the fortitude to bear the loss. Apart from working with him at the U-20 team on our way to Canada 2007, I was so close to him and he was a great person who cares for everybody around him,” the former U-20 national coordinator, Ajakbo Ahmed told SportingLife.

    NFF mourns Musa Abdullahi

    The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed deep sorrow at news of the death of one-time Head Coach of the U-17 National Team and a former Assistant Coach of the Super Eagles, Musa Abdullahi.

    Abdullahi, who suffered a stroke several years ago and had been confined to his home in Kogi State since then, died yesterday and was buried the same day.

    “This is terrible news,” began NFF President Amaju Pinnick, who spoke on telephone from Equatorial Guinea where he is on official duty for the Confederation of African Football at the 30th Africa Cup of Nations finals.

    “Coach Musa Abdullahi was known by all who came across him as a gentleman to the core, a very humble, highly dedicated and tireless professional who had real passion for the job. He was just a likeable person in every respect.

    “We feel very, very sad to lose him but God loves him more and he has gone to rest. Our prayer is for Almighty God to grant him peaceful rest and also grant the family he has left behind the fortitude to bear the huge loss,”Pinnick stated.

    The ever-smiling Musa Abdullahi assisted Coach Fanny Amun to lead the U-17 National Team to a second FIFA U-17 World Cup title in Japan in 1993.

    Kwara Governor Ahmed swears in three commissioners

    Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed yesterday swore-in three commissioners.

    They are Musa Abdullahi (Energy), Demola Banu (Finance) and Kamaldeen Ajibade (Attorney-General).

    Ahmed, last month, sacked all the commissioners, special advisers, senior special assistants and special assistants.

    The governor said: “Leadership must be devoid of partisanship and be beneficial to the majority of the people.

    “Politicians must develop leadership that inspires hope and provides clear focus and champions the cause of the majority rather than the few.

    “Such leadership, when attained through the exercise of popular will, must be inclusive, populist and beneficial.

    “My administration will continue to promote inclusiveness by creating opportunities for everyone to thrive.

    “The commissioners were reappointed based on their records of accomplishments, dedication and loyalty to the people.”
