    VC urges old students to support FUT, Minna

    Prof. Musbau Akanji, Vice-Chancellor ( VC ), Federal University of Technology, Minna, has urged old students of the school to support its quest toward becoming a leading technology institute in the world.

    Akanbi, in a speech at the maiden Alumni Reunion programme held at the university on Monday, said that it was the turn of the students to give back to the school that trained them.

    A statement by Mrs. Lydia Legbo, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, quoted Akanbi as challenging the old students to strive toward making the institution a model university that others would seek to emulate.

    Akanbi, who praised the old students for being good ambassadors that had made the institution proud, said that they were the pride of its founding fathers.

    “The university is happy with the numerous commendations received from employers and government agencies on the performance of its alumni.

    “The institution is very proud of your achievements; you are the real owners of the university and should initiate measures toward making it a centre of excellence,” he said.

    He disclosed that the university was doing well based on the latest webo-metric and 4ICU rankings.

    “I am pleased to inform you that FUT, Minna is now number five in 4ICU ranking in Nigeria, and 45 in Africa, out of more than 4,323 universities ranked by international organizations,” he said.

    He said that the institution had also been ranked the best among specialised universities in Nigeria.

    Akanbi informed the alumni that the university had re-engineered its transcript delivery process from three
    months to one week, adding that graduates could get their certificates on the day of
    convocation.

    Speaking earlier, the Chairman, National Caretaker Committee of FUT, Minna Alumni, Dr. Mohammed Jiya, thanked his colleagues for the deep interest in the school, saying that the Reunion programme was geared at re-connecting graduates.

    “The idea is to build a robust alumni association that every graduate of the university will be proud of,” he said.

    The event witnessed the presentation of awards to former Vice-Chancellors( VC ) and alumni that had distinguished themselves in their chosen fields.

    FUT Minna VC pledges to improve staff school

    The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, Prof. Musbau Akanji has pledged to improve teaching and learning at the university’s staff school.

    Akanji made the pledge when he met with the head teacher of the school, Mrs Elizabeth Soe-Shinni in his office on Thursday as part of the activities marking its three decades of existence.

    A statement by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs Lydia Legbu quoted the vice-chancellor as saying that the problems of the school would receive adequate attention.

    Akanji congratulated the management, staff and pupils of the school for contributing their quota to the educational development of the state and Nigeria at large in the last 30 years.

    According to him, the school has always made the university community proud in all its academic and extra curricula activities.

    Responding, the head teacher appealed to the university management to assist the school in the area of regular water supply, procurement of a school bus and recruitment of more personnel.

    Soe-Shinni lauded successive administrations for the maximum support being rendered toward the growth and development of the staff school in the last 30 years.

    She expressed delight that some of the school’s products were now professionals of repute in various fields of endeavour.

    The University Staff School started in Jan. 28, 1987 with the motto “Excellence is Our Goal”.

  • Dam construction at FUT Minna will end perennial water scarcity – VC

    The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Musbau Akanji, says the ongoing dam construction in the university  will end perennial water scarcity being experienced by students and staff.

    In a statement signed by Mrs Lydia Legbu, the university’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) in Minna on Friday, Akanji appealed to the host communities to support the projects so that it can completed in time.

    The Vice-Chancellor was quoted to have made the appeal during a stakeholders meeting with the 10 villages in and around the university.

    The vice-chancellor was represented by the acting Director, Physical Planning and Development Unit, Mr Idris Alhassan, Akanji told the villagers to serve as trustees of earth dam project by providing the much needed support and cooperation to the contractor handling the project.

    He, however, warned that farming and grazing of animals within the project site will no longer be tolerated, admonishing the villagers to steer clear of the demarcated areas.

    “I want you all to see the earth dam project as your own by protecting it against destruction,” Akanji said.

    Responding, the Garatu village head, Alhaji Abdul Garatu commended the management for siting the project within their communities.

    He noted that the earth dam project will address the problem water scarcity facing the communities.

    He, however, appealed to the management to provide them with temporary source of water since the river, the only source of water supply to the communities, has been taken over.

    Garatu also appealed to the contractor to employ some of their youths to work at the site.

    FUT Minna receives licence for mining activities

    The Federal University of Technology, Minna has been granted licence by the Federal Government to engage in mining activities.

    This was disclosed in a statement by Mrs Lydian Legbu and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) in Minna on Thursday.

    It said that the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Musbau Akanji, received the Reconnaissance Permit and Exploration Licence issued by the Nigeria Mining Cadastral Office.

    Akanji said at the event that, the institution applied for the licence a year ago, to checkmate illegal mining on its land.

    He said that the university would partner with investors in the sector, and commended the Department of Geology for its efforts in actualising the issuance of the licence.

    The vice chancellor explained that the university would undertake environmental impact assessment before venturing into exploration.

    He said that by diversifying into mining activities, the university would widen its revenue base and open up new vistas for academic development.

    In a remark, the Director, University Ventures, Prof. Shehu Ma’aji described the development as a landmark achievement for the institution.

    Also, the Head of Geology Department, Dr Idris Abdullahi said that with the issuance of the licence, the university has the option of going into direct mining or bringing in other experts.

    He explained that after feasibility studies, more areas owned by the university would be placed on mining lease, valid for 25 years.

    NAN reports that the Reconnaissance Permit is valid for one year, while the Exploration Licence has three-year validity, renewable for two further periods of two years each.

    The area covers 130 Cadastral Units and 26km2 in Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State.
