The Medical Director of Mushin General Hospital, Lagos, Dr Oluyemi Taiwo, has promised to expand the hospital’s services to reduce the rate of referring patients to neighbouring hospitals.

Taiwo stated this at the community stakeholders meeting held on Thursday at the conference room of the hospital.

The meeting centred on seeking support from stakeholders and soliciting donors for the hospital.

Taiwo said: “We’ll harness the resources available and expand those services. Right now, we provide a number of services that ranges from Accident & Emergency, General Outpatient, Dental, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Maternal and Child Centre at Itire Eleja branch. We are looking at some other things we can do because this is a secondary centre, and the vision is for us to be able to take this secondary centre to its zenith.”

She said the new services to be added include Ear, Nose and Throat, Surgical Services, and Orthopedics.

Lamenting the current limited services the hospital offers, she said it was always painful seeing the hospital referring patients to neighbouring hospitals for services it should be providing for the comfortability of the community.

“We will try as much as possible to remodel, restructure and accommodate because it is a pain when we have clients coming into our facility and we are referring them to neighbouring facilities around. If we have to (refer patients) at all, it would go to a tertiary centre; that is what we can’t do, but we can do a number of things. And that’s why we are going to expand so that we can cover those areas and make people within this community a lot more comfortable in terms of services they required,” she said.

According to her, the hospital bed spaces had been increased, and would be doubled to 30 in about a week.

She added that the hospital workers from the security to the medical staff had been trained and retrained on how to have an improved cordial relationship with patients and relatives.

She decried harassment of their staff by patients’ relatives.

Chairman of Mushin Local Government, Emmanuel Bamigboye, represented by the Senior Special Adviser (SSA) on Health, Alhaji Sekoni Aliu, said the council is always ready to support the hospital and urged the MD to always reach out to the council for support.
