    MCSN, NCC train DJs in copyright

    The Musical Copyright Society Nigeria (MCSN) in collaboration with the Nigeria Copyright Commission (NCC) will hold a one day training for members of the Deejays Association of Nigeria (DJAN).

    The training themed “Training in Copyright Laws and Enforcement Strategies”, will take place at the Lagos Airport Hotel on Wednesday, May 7.

    The event specially designed for the Deejays Association seeks to empower DJs with the knowledge about the proper use of musical works and the legal responsibilities they bear under the Nigerian Copyright Act 2022 and the consequences of copyright infringement.

    The session will focus on sensitising DJs on the importance of respecting the intellectual property rights of music creators. It will teach them that the unauthorised use of copyright music in their trade is a criminal offence under the new Act.

    Speaking on the importance of the training, MCSN emphasised that DJs were vital to the music and entertainment ecosystem and it was crucial they (DJs) understood that the music they use is someone’s intellectual property.

    “The goal is not on only to enforce compliance but to build a culture of respect, partnership and sustainability between DJs and music creators,” said a spokesman for the Society.

    The training will feature seasoned legal and copyright experts including representatives from the NCC who will explain the provision of the copyright Act, answer questions and provide guidance on the best practices moving forward.

    MCSN set to commence operations in Uyo

    In continuation of its expansion programme, the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria Ltd/Gte (MCSN) is set to commence operations in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.

    The plan, according to MCSN Chief Executive Officer, Mayo Ayilaran, is to serve the needs of music consumers and creators in that part of the South-South zone.

    The Uyo branch was contemplated with the active participation of stakeholders in the zone

    particularly the Akwa Ibom state chapter of the Performing Musicians Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN) and the state Government that had offered the office accommodation for the take off of the branch office.

    Ayilaran was recently in the state  to inspect the facility in the entourage of Louis Udoh, National Enforcement and Compliance Consultant, Obi Ezeilo and Dr. Unwana Ibanga.

    The delegation was warmly received by Dr. Unwana Joshua Udo, Director of the Centre for Arts and Culture who commended the Society (MCSN) for its effort in enhancing copyright administration and pledged the state’s commitment to supporting the Society.

    Dr. Udo reiterated the government’s commitment in collaborating with MCSN and PMAN in ensuring that musicians and creators in the state benefit from their intellectual property.

    The meeting had prominent leaders and members of the music industry including Comrade (Evang.) Joshua Okon Offiong, Efiom Effiong (Rebreed), and PMAN executives and members in attendance.

    In his remarks, Ayilaran commended the Akwa Ibom State Government for its hospitality and the evident growth in the state’s creative industry, which he noted starts from the moment one enters the State’s airline, Ibom Air. He also appreciated the state’s support for and cooperation with PMAN, pointing out that the upcoming branch office will bring MCSN closer to creators and users of creative works in the region.

    He also urged musicians in Akwa Ibom to register and notify the Society of their works and also provide their account details, which can now be done seamlessly online from anywhere in the world to enable them to receive royalties for their intellectual property as the world has gone digital. He assured that the Akwa Ibom office would be fully operational before the end of the last quarter of 2024 and that MCSN was committed MCSN was committed to establishing similar offices across the country.
