Ambode’s wife preaches love, tolerance at Ramadan

Wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, has called for love and peaceful co-existence among the citizenry, during and after the Ramadan.

She made the call during the evening prayer and fast-breaking (Iftar) by Muslim faithful, at Lagos House, Ikeja.

Mrs. Ambode said that the Ramadan period represented love, forgiveness, peaceful co-existence and the need to extend a helping hand to the less privileged in the society.

The Governor’s wife said that Nigeria needed love and peaceful co-existence to strengthen and surmount all challenges confronting her as a nation.

According to her, “For any country to thrive, she needs love and peaceful co-existence to strengthen the social bond, and overcome any challenge confronting it as a nation. It is only when we allow love to grow in our hearts irrespective of religion, language and tribe barrier that we can collectively as a nation surmount any challenge confronting us”.

Speaking further, she said that fasting during this period of Ramadan should not just consist of refraining from eating and drinking, but from every kind of selfish desire and wrong-doing.

She said, “Fasting during this Ramadan period does not just consist of refraining from eating and drinking, but from every kind of selfish desire and wrong-doing. The fast is not merely of the body, but essentially that of the spirit as well”.

The Governor’s wife urged the gathering to develop and strengthen the powers of self-control, attain nearness and closeness to God, so as to intensify the consciousness of God in our hearts, resulting in a higher spiritual experience and to continue to give to the less privileged, not at Ramadan alone but at all times.

Mrs. Ambode thanked them for the prayer offered for the state, the first family, cabinet members and the nation at large, just as she urged them to continue to intercede with their prayers and prayed that they would all live to witness many more Ramadan on earth.

Ambode to Muslims: Extend Holy living beyond Ramadan

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday urged Muslim faithful and all Lagosians to carry on with the principles of the holy month of Ramadan which are love, peace, kindness, compassion and happy co-existence.

Governor Ambode, who spoke in Lagos House, Ikeja at a special Eid el-Fitri celebration organized by the State Government to mark the end of fasting, said it is only when the principles of the season are sustained beyond Ramadan that the fasting period can be given true meaning.

The Governor, who said that this year’s Ramadan was unique in the sense that the thirty-day fasting period was fully observed, thanked the Muslim faithful for their prayers and urged them to continue to pray for the State and the country in general.

He said: “As your Governor, I seek for your support and cooperation as we move into the second year of this administration. We must all play our parts and keep relating with this government and we will not fail in making Lagos work for all of us.

“While thanking everyone that has spared time to join us in this get-together, I enjoin Muslim faithful and indeed all Lagosians to sustain the lessons of Ramadan,” Governor Ambode said.

Earlier, in her welcome address, Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, thanked God for giving Muslims the strength to complete the thirty-day fasting, but stressed the need for them to remember the essence of the holy month and the expected renewal of faith and spiritual cleansing of souls.

She said: “It is important for us to continue with the principles of the Holy Month. Ramadan represents love, peace, kindness, compassion and happy co-existence. The Holy Prophet held these principles in high esteem and lived His whole life around them.

“Therefore, as brothers, sisters, neighbors, co-workers, we must love one another, show kindness to one another and live together in peace. It is when we do these beyond the fasting period that we give true meaning to the Ramadan,” Mrs. Ambode said.

The event, which attracted hundreds of Muslims who flocked the Lagos House to celebrate the season with the Governor and his family, was also attended by dignitaries from all walks of life including members of the State Executive Council.

Highlight of the celebration was the Quran recitation, Islamic quiz and dancing competition, with winners going home with prizes courtesy of the Wife of the Governor.

  • Ramadan: Physician counsels Muslim faithful on water in-take

Ramadan: Physician counsels Muslim faithful on water in-take

Muslims intending to partake in fasting during Ramadan have been advised to consume plenty of water few days to its commencement.

Dr Sam Onuh, a consultant-physician with the Omu-Aran General Hospital in Kwara, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Omu-Aran.

Onuh said that that consuming plenty of water by those fasting would reduce the negative impact of dehydration on them during the month.

According to Onuh, people who fast commonly experienced dehydration largely because they were denying bodies the required fluid from food and water they abstained from.
“With people who are used to having breakfast; lunch, dinner and snacks in between, the fasting period could be a major challenge.

“It is recommended that Muslims consume plenty of water prior to fasting.

“Fasting can increase the stress level and disrupt sleep. Dehydration, hunger or lack of sleep during fasting can also lead to headache.

“ It can also cause heartburn; lack of food leads to a reduction in stomach acid, which digests food and destroys bacteria.

“But smelling food or even thinking about it during fasting can trigger the brain into telling the stomach to produce more acid, leading to heartburn,” he said.

Onuh listed those that may be medically exempted from fasting to include the underweight, individuals below 18 years, pregnant women, people with type 1 diabetes and those recovering from surgery.

The physician said that a prolonged fasting could also be effective for regenerating the immune cells.
“This can also serve as a protection against cell damage caused by aging and chemotherapy.

“The good news is that the body, during fasting, gets rid of the parts of the system that may be damaged, old or is inefficient.

“Now, if you start with a system heavily damaged by chemotherapy or aging, fasting cycles can generate, literally, a new immune system.

“Studies of intermittent fasting show that not only do people see improvements in blood pressure and their cholesterol levels, but also in their insulin sensitivity,’’ he said.
