  • Woman who sold baby for N100,000 arraigned

    The police in Ebonyi State yesterday arraigned a 37-year-old woman, Blessing Prince (aka Mummy B), for allegedly selling a four-day old baby for N100,000.

    A source alleged that the suspect operated a baby factory in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

    She reportedly took the baby’s mother, a 15-year-old (name withheld), from her home at Amangballa in Afikpo North Local Government of Ebonyi State to Port Harcourt where she was delivered of the baby and the infant was sold to a couple, whose identity could not be ascertained at press time.

    The source said the teenage mother was given N5,000 to return home.

    He said a 20-year-old man, Ifeanyichukwu Elem, who allegedly impregnated the teenager, was arrested by the police and detained for 20 days for insisting on the release of his baby.

    The Nation learnt that Elem was, however, released last Saturday because of his poor health.

    Blessing, who was rearrested after being released by the police, was arraigned at the Federal High Court 2 Abakaliki on a two-count charge of dealing in child trafficking and selling a four-day-old baby.

    The charge reads: “That you Blessing Prince and others at large on October 20, at Amaokwu Amangballa in Afikpo North local Government of Ebonyi State, in the Judicial Division of this honourable court, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit: Deal in child trafficking and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 27 of Trafficking in Person (prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.

    “That you Blessing Prince and others at large sometime on the same date and place in the aforementioned judicial division did sell a four-day- old baby to one Black (real name unknown) and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 21 of the Trafficking in Person (prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015”.

    The suspect pleaded not guilty.

    Justice Akintayo Aluko granted her bail in the sum of N2million with a surety in like sum who must be a civil servant of not less than Level 10.

    He said the surety must have a landed property in Abakaliki.

    Justice Aluko ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody if she did not fulfil the bail conditions and adjourned the matter till December 5 for trial.

  • Okada rider gets N100, 000 bail

    An Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos  has slammed a N100, 000 bail on a 40-year-old commercial motorcyclist popularly known as Okada rider, Hameed Safaliu, for allegedly plying a prohibited route.

    Magistrate A. Oshodi-Makanju, who gave the ruling yesterday, granted him two responsible sureties.

    He said the sureties, who should be gainfully employed, should also show evidence of tax payment.

    Safaliu, whose address is unknown, pleaded not guilty.

    But the prosecuting sergeant Kemi Adeniran, insisted that the accused committed the offence on July 27 around 4pm on the Ikorodu-Lagos Expressway.

    Adeniran told the court that the accused rode his motorcycle marked SMK 117 QM on the expressway in violation of the state’s traffic laws.

    “The accused knew that the road is one of the prohibited routes for motorcyclists.”

    According to her, the offence contravened Schedule 1, Sections 21 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State 2012.

    The case has been adjourned to September 12.

  • FG unveils new N100 Centenary note

    The new N100 centenary banknote was formally presented to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided by President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House on Wednesday.

    Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefuele, who presented the note, said that the note is to commemorate 100 years amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates in 1914.

    Stressing that it was produced with the most advanced technology in the world, he said that the note retained the picture of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo on the front side.

    He said that the new note has security features against counterfeiting and with special durability tolerance.

    The Zuma Rock at the back of the current note has been replaced by Q.R. code and other pictures.

    Speaking on the Q.R. code, the CBN governor said that with telephone set and iPad having QR code scanner and the application to be released by the bank, Nigerian will be able to scan and read historical facts about Nigeria.

    The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala who wondered  how much it will cost to print the notes, noted that the Q.R. code features will be useful for students to catch up with the history of Nigeria.

    From the leaflets circulated showed various programmes leading to issuance of the note to Nigerians.

    While the launch of the partnership programme aimed at banknote equipment manufacturers and other machine suppliers will hold next Wednesday, the new notes will be issued into circulation on Friday 19th December
