  • Robbers steal over N4m cash in Aba warehouse

Four armed men have reportedly attacked a warehouse on Azikiwe Road in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State, and allegedly stole over N4 million.

The Nation learnt that the gunmen, who operated in a commercial tricycle, pretended to make enquiry at the textile warehouse.

Warehouses in Aba have been under attack by gunmen who disguised as passengers of commercial tricycles to beat security checks.

Sources said the gunmen stole the cash belonging to the owner of the warehouse and some of his customers.

The hoodlums were said to have carried out their act without attracting the attention of neighbours and passers-by to the extent that everyone else was surprised when customers and the warehouse owner were narrating their ordeal.

The robbers were said to have stopped another commercial tricycle operator after attacking the warehouse.

“The man is selling clothes in bales. People were surprised when they were narrating the incident. The shop owner could not say exactly how much was stolen from him, but from what we gathered, the gunmen made away with over N4 million cash,” the source said.

A resident urged warehouse owners to install Close Circuit Television (CCTV) in their shops, saying it would assist the police and other security agencies to either identify or track down the hoodlums, as was the case in Offa (Kwara State) robbery.

Also, a resident of Boudex Lane, off 28 Umuola Road in Aba, is battling for survival in an undisclosed hospital.

He was reportedly shot by a robber who invaded his apartment with his group.

The victim, who operates a provision store, was said to have been taken unawares by the robbers, who were on a tricycle.

It was gathered that as the man attempted to stop the armed men from taking the money, one of them shot the man in the head, leaving him in the pool of his blood.

The neighbours and a police patrol team were reportedly attracted to the scene by the sound of the gun and screaming of the victim.

The hoodlums were said to have abandoned their tricycle in front of a popular secondary school on Aba-Ikot Ekpene highway before dashing into a nearby bush.

Police spokesman DSP Geoffery Ogbonna, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), could not be reached last night for comments.

  • Joy as old students donate N4m water pumps to alma mater

There was jubilation at the Government College, Ughelli, Delta State at the weekend as its Old Boys donated eight pneumatic manual water pumps worth over N4 million to the college.

The group also donated over 100 copies of the books ‘Innovative Leadership’ and ‘How to Become a Millionaire” written by Mr. Jude Kakpobvia and Utoh Ohworieha, two members of the Class of 1978 to the college, and sister schools, Anglican Girls Grammar School and St. Theresa’s Grammar School, Ughelli.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony,  the Delta State  Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Chiedu Ebie commended the old boys of the college for their various contributions to the development of the school.

Ebie, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Pius Omubaye stressed need for old students of schools to contribute towards the growth of their alma manta, saying government alone cannot do it all.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Class of 1978 of the school, Dr. Akpor Mudiaga-Odje said the project was embarked upon in the spirit of giving back from what they had to the school which he said had given so much to them.

He said: “This was where our educational umbilical cords were buried and in retrospect, our fathers and mothers at that time, saw the light of Government College, Ughelli and they knew it was a school of unmatched and impeccable educational standard.

“While here, there were some things we were indoctrinated about, regarding the issues of culture, self discipline, education, integrity, honesty and steadfastness and having built all these things in us, we were pushed into the world and we saw how these virtues enabled us to soar and tower above our challenges.

“Having done that, we now said, we must not forget where we came from; this is the foundation of our educational excellence. This is the first project we are commissioning in the midst of harvest of projects coming soon.”

He explained that the reason to embark on the manually operated water pumping system was as a result of the epileptic power supply.

The President of the Warri Branch of the Government College, Ughelli Old Boys Association, Dr. Richard Obiuwebvi, reiterated the determination of the old boys to bring the school back to the standard it was during its golden era.

“It is in this spirit that apart from the old boys associations, classes of various years are now organising themselves to give one for of assistance or the other to the school, “he said.

A prominent member of the association, Mr. Stephen Dieseruvwe,  said: “When you look at the importance of clean drinking water, if a set in the school now decided to provide eight pneumatic manual water pumps to the school, it is a wonderful.”

The Principal of the school, Mr. Godspower Odenema, said: “Government College, Ughelli depicts excellence,” thanking the old boys for all they had been doing towards the development of the school.

  • This eight-year-old girl needs N4m to live

This eight-year-old girl needs N4m to live

A car accident has disrupted little Chinaemerem’s education and could well end her life, if her parents do not provide N4m for her treatment. UGOCH-UKWU UGOJI-EKE reports

Perhaps, the accident could have been averted. Against the norm, eight-year-old Chinaemerem Ikeri’s teacher sent her outside the school premises to buy a painkiller. As she made to cross the road, a vehicle knocked her down. She broke her legs, her spinal cord was affected and she also suffered some brain injuries.

Her parents have been agonising too. A paramilitary man who was said to have hit Chinaemerem denied the charge, saying he was only playing the good guy by taking her to hospital. On advice, the police were invited and arrested him, but he was asked to go after only a “few days” in detention. Soon after, the man was allegedly redeployed far out of town.

The pain of the Ikeris has deepened. They have no money to save their bedridden daughter.

Chinaemerem, who is in Primary Three in Ubakala Community Primary School in Umuahia South council area of Abia State, has been lying at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia where she spent eight months.

A doctor said she needs a surgery around her brain areas for her to regain consciousness, a process that must be undertaken at a better hospital in the country or, better still, abroad and which will cost about N3m.

Already, Chinaemerem’s parents are indebted to the FMC to the tune of N1.3m, out of which they were only able to pay about N300,000.

The girl has received just enough attention at the FMC to sustain her travel to a better hospital for the surgery but she is still with the Umuahia facility, her parents unable to pay the initial bill.

Chinaemerem remains in pain and do her parents.

Speaking with The Nation,  Chinaemerem’s mother said, “My child was hale and hearty and full of life when she went to school. On my way to the place I sell sachet water, I took food to Chinaemerem at school and exchanged pleasantries with her teachers and left, but a few  hours after I left, China-merem’s teacher sent her to go and buy  paracetamol tablets across the ever-busy road and in  her total obedience to her teacher even when it defied the rule that a pupil should not be sent out during her study period, she has been rendered neurologically impaired.

“A neighbour came to my place of business and told me about the accident and immediately my whole life shrank and when I saw my eight-year-old daughter at Ubakala Road lying almost lifeless in a pool of blood I was traumatised.

“I realised how tough life would have been without my child whose father was in faraway Sokoto looking for greener pastures as a teacher just to fend for his family.

“After the driver was arrested by the police the unexpected happened, Ume after spending a few days in the police custody at Ubakala police station was left to go and he was transferred from Umuahia to Bayelsa State where I learnt he has continued his work and abandoned us here.

“I wondered how our society has degenerated so much that people place little value on human life and allow impunity to reign in our everyday living.”

The life of Chinaemerem is currently in limbo and her mother looked hopeless as she sat beside the sick bed of her daughter watching her as she writhed in pain hoping  that one day her child would regain consciousness and talk to her again.

Mrs Ikeri is soliciting for the help of well-meaning Nigerians and the government to help in her daughter’s fight for life.

All donations can be made to her personally through her phone 07030394255, or through her United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc. Her account name is Cecila Ikeri, account number 2032897658.
