Pregnant woman dies after hospital allegedly rejects treatment over N500,000 deposit

A pregnant woman, Kemi, died after being denied medical treatment at a private hospital due to her husband’s inability to pay a N500,000 deposit.

The husband, Akinbobola Folajimi, posted a distressing video showing his wife’s final moments.

“My goodness, Kemi, look at me. Stay strong, look at me. Think about your kids, please. You need to be very strong for me,” he was heard saying in the footage.

According to Folajimi, they were turned away from the private hospital and referred to a General hospital in Epe but Kemi didn’t survive the journey.

This heartbreaking incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many calling for an investigation into the hospital’s alleged refusal to provide urgent care.

Folajimi’s Instagram post revealed the horrific treatment they received at the private hospital, with the doctor demanding a N500,000 deposit before providing any medical attention.

Despite Folajimi’s pleas to start treatment while he secured the funds, the hospital refused, and Kemi’s life was tragically lost.

In his post Folajimi wrote, “Private hospitals in Nigeria. The doctor told me to deposit 500k and I begged him to start doing whatever is needed to save my wife, we needed emergency support while I run around for the money but they drove us out like they don’t care.

“Unfortunately blindly rejected us and asked me to take her to General Hospital at Epe, even the doctor knows that Epe from Lakwe is way too far for such her condition. Before we rushed her to Epe, she was gone

“How???? such a wicked institution, well only jah knows and sees all. this is just too much for me.”

Authorities were yet to respond to the situation as the public awaits further developments.

  • Offa robbery: Lawyer donates N500,000 to victims

EX-Governorship candidate of defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) in Kwara, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, and Ibadan lawyer Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) have condoled with the Olofa of Offa, Oba Mohammed Muftau Gbadamosi, on the robbery in the town.

Fagbemi, who described the attack as a national disaster, donated N500,000 for treatment of the injured.

According to him, the hoodlums’ aim is to dampen Offa’s resilience, but he said the attack will rather strengthen the ancient town’s resolve to be more united, focused and rise above adversity.

He promised to assist with plans to provide adequate security to Offa and its environs.

Fagbemi said: “It is with a heavy heart that I write to commiserate with your Royal Majesty, the Olofa-in-Council, families of the victims and the people of Offa over the unfortunate April 5 robbery.

“The attack, coming at a time when Offa had enjoyed relative peace and accelerated development due to your purposeful leadership, has cast a dark cloud over Offa and the country. Offa is not just a cosmopolitan town; but home to people of diverse origin and culture.

“Personally, my history will not be complete without Offa, which provided me with the foundation of a glorious career. As a prince of Ijagbo and an alumnus of Offa Grammar School, my commitment to the development of Offa and its environs cannot be over-emphasised.

“In the spirit of the ancient tradition of Offa, we, as a people, shall ‘wrestle’ all that seeks to divide us.

“In view of the above, I shall make available my widow’s mite as a token of love for the treatment of the injured.

“Kabiyesi, the incident is most regrettable but I don’t want you to see it as a loss only to Offa town, but as a national disaster and a dent on our collective humanity.”

Abdulrazaq, on his own part, said: “It is with deep sorrow that I commiserate and grieve with the Nigeria Police Force, the Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi (Esuwoye II) and the people on the attack.

“This attack is not the first, thus I urge the government to emulate other states by providing effective and complementary support to the police to tighten security and protect life and property.

“I also enjoin the police to work assiduously to bring the perpetrators to justice soon.”

  • Guarantor lands in hospital as friend bolts over unpaid N500, 000 loan

Guarantor lands in hospital as friend bolts over unpaid N500, 000 loan

The fear of being haunted by creditors has landed a woman, Doris Oghenovo, in a private hospital, after her friend bolted over unpaid N500, 000 loan.

Oghenovo, it was learnt, stood  as a guarantor for her friend, Queen Obienu, for the loans she took from a group of local lenders, Blessing Okemena in 2016.

The Nation learnt that Obienu was given the loan based on the assurance given by Oghenovo that her friend would not default in paying back the money.

Obienu was said to have offered her landed property at Oko Afo in Badagry as collateral to secure the facility but the lenders allegedly rejected the property citing its lack of commercial value.

Speaking with The Nation, Oghenovo, who is still recuperating at the hospital located in the outskirts of Ijanikin area of Lagos State attributed her health conditions to the pressure from the creditors.

She said: ‘’ I was rushed to the hospital after my blood pressure jerked up because the creditor group brought a police woman to arrest me last Thursday.  I explained to them that I could not locate the whereabouts of my friend; I even promised to defray the debt by paying a sum of N5000 every month but they insisted on having the money in full before they left my house. Surprisingly, the leaders of Blessing Okemena told me on the telephone to report at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, Lagos, and that was when I developed high blood pressure and my people rushed me to the hospital.’’

‘’ I stood as a guarantor for Mr Obienu in 2016 at the office of Blessing Okemena on Irokosun Crescent, Ayetoro, Ijanikin, with a maximum repayment period of six months. Obienu was paying the interest on the loan until December 2016 when she could no longer service the facility.

‘’ In March this year, I took Obienu back to the leadership of the creditor group and she signed an undertaking to pay up the entire loan. She even offered to use her landed property as the collateral for the facility but the lenders said the location of the land has no commercial value, hence, they rejected it and a few weeks later, Obienu disappeared from her residence without a trace.’’

‘’About six months ago, in rushed down to Obienu’s house after sources told me that her husband, Edwin was packing out of their residence at number 10, Oremeji Street, Ketu-Ijanikin. I went to their house with policemen from Ijanikin Police Division, but he could not be arrested because the police said he was not the one that took the loan. Edwin later visited me in company with a lawyer called Edem promising to repay the loan to no avail.’’

A sister to Obienu, who identified herself simply as Mama Efe in a telephone conversation with The Nation said the family would pay back the loan ‘’once Obienu is found.’’

“We don’t know Queen’s (Obienu) whereabouts. Her husband told us that she left home without disclosing her destination. He told us that she owed a number of people from whom she collected loans. The economy situation of the contry might have affected her business so much that she could not pay back the money.

‘’However, the family members would meet and fashion out how the loans would be repaid. I can assure you that we would repay the money once we find out her whereabouts. Please asked her creditors to be patient with us.’’

In a telephone conversation with our correspondent, one of the leaders of the creditor group,   Omoraru Oghale said the leadership of the group decided to go after Oghenovo since she stoo d as guarantor for her friend who took the loan.

“Doris (Oghenovo) was the one that collected the money on behalf of her friend and it was for this reason that the leadership of our group decided to make her pay back the loan.’’

A police source, who asked not to be named confirmed the story saying that ‘’ the debtor’s husband could not be arrested because he was not the guarantor for the loan. We are still looking for the woman( Obienu) in order to make her explain her complicity in the matter.’’

  • Yoruba teacher wins N500,000

Hakeem Opadijo did not expect that by the end of last Sunday, he would be N500,000 richer courtesy of a Teachers Award programme organised by Hope gate  Education Support Foundation.

He attended the event in his Sunday’s best hoping to enjoy a nice outing at the event held at the Youth Centre of Oshodi Local Government Area.  But he was in for a pleasant surprise when he was named the most outstanding teacher in Education District IV.

The event was to honour outstanding teachers who have contributed immensely to the development of the education sector.

Nineteen public primary and secondary teachers out of 48 schools in Education District VI applied for the competition. They were asked to write an essay on why they should win the award.

They were nominated by principals of their schools, judged on how creative they are, participated in any volunteer work and records on their previous awards.

Opadijo has been teaching Yoruba Language for eight years. He  teaches at Ewututu Senior Grammar School, Oshodi, where he passed out many years ago.

But Opadijo is no ordinary Yoruba teacher. The father of four is groomed in 20 vocational skills. Out of his salary, he established a Yoruba art gallery in his school. Aside teaching, he engages his pupils in selfless services, including: visiting destitute homes, psychiatric hospitals, homes of the blind – all at his expense. He is also creating awareness on Hepartis, which cost about N50,000 to treat per week.

He said teaching has been his passion as he loves imparting knowledge in pupils. He has also won several awards to his credit

Expressing his joy at the award, he said: “I am extremely delighted. I never thought I would win. I was even the last person that submitted my form. I am only doing what I love to do, which is imparting knowledge. Because I believe that failure to impact the community means that you are destroying the lives of your children,” he said.

He lamented that the education sector is getting less attention than the entertainment.

“Education nowadays is given very low attention.  All attention has drifted to the entertainment industry. Students are hardly awarded for their excellent performances.  A professor for many years is hardly recognised compared to a footballer or even a musician,” he said.

He urged the government to invest in teachers and pupils.

The first runner up went home with N100,000 while the second runner-up got N50,000. Teachers who merited long term service were given plaques, and 19 teachers billed to retire this year went home with gifts

One of them, Mrs Fasunloye Taiwo, said: “I express my profound gratitude first to God Almighty then to the Founders of HopeGate Foundations, Mr and Mrs Akinyemi, the Trustees and other members of their organisation. I say a very big thank you to you all for appreciating the effort of teachers which nobody has thought of in this country.  May God bless you.”

Mrs Ojulape Akinyemi, founder of Hopegate Foundation, said the awards was instituted to motivate teachers by acknowledging their efforts.

“We are honouring our teachers in Oshodi. We want to give back to the society by capacity building of the teachers and pupils.

“According to WAEC, 31.2 percent is the pass mark which is not even up to average. We really need to do more. It was a wakeup call for me. For the past seven years, the result has been going down. The government can not do it alone, the private sector needs to support and that’s why we are here,” she said.
