NABTEB urges senior govt officials against intimidation of subordinates

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) has urged senior government officials to desist from using their positions to intimidate or oppress subordinates.

Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the board Dr. Aminu Mohammed, gave the advice in Benin, while opening the 3rd Quarter Global Ministerial SERVICOM Committee (GMSC) Meeting, hosted by the board.

The meeting, themed: “Bridging Service Delivery Gaps in Technical and Vocational Education: Enhancing Standards, Certification, and Employability,” brought together key stakeholders in the education and public sectors.

Mohammed emphasised that leadership was not about oppression but service.

The NABTEB boss decried the growing culture of impunity among some senior officers, who misuse their authority, stressing that SERVICOM existed to hold both senior and junior officers accountable.

“When many of us get into positions of authority, we become a different human being entirely.

“This body is set up to monitor the activities of both senior and junior officers. Those at the top are they doing what they are supposed to do?

“And those below them, are they performing their duties as expected?

“Your office must be a place where human relations are taken seriously, not where colleagues are harassed or intimidated,” he said.

The registrar reminded participants that no one occupies an office forever and urged them to uphold integrity and fairness in public service.

“Avoid using your office to intimidate your colleagues. You cannot remain there forever.

“Do not cover up wrongdoings. SERVICOM must be fearless in holding erring officers accountable. That is the essence of good governance,” he said.

Mr. Olumuyiwa Enitan, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, represented by Mr. Yiman Innocent, Chairman of the Global Ministerial SERVICOM Committee, called on participants to work collaboratively toward reforming Nigeria’s public service.

Mrs. Kimelomo Aina from the SERVICOM Office, Abuja, commended NABTEB for hosting the session, noting that the theme reflected the urgency of improving service delivery in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

“Technical and vocational education is no longer a secondary option; it is the foundation for innovation, productivity, and industrial growth.

“Bridging service delivery gaps in TVET will not only enhance employability but also build public trust and institutional credibility,” she said.

NABTEB releases results of NBC/NTC exams

The Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), Dr Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, has announced the release of the results of this year’s in-school National Business Certificate/National Technical Certificate (NBC/NTC) examinations conducted in June/July by the board.

The registrar said the outcome showed an improvement in performance of the candidates during the exams and a 37 per cent increase in the 2025 enrollment figures compared to 2024.

Giving a breakdown of the result at a press conference on Thursday in Abuja, the NABTEB chief said that about 80,000 of over 92,000 candidates that enrolled for the examination had credits in English and Mathematics.

The breakdown, he said, showed that candidates enrolled for 16 Engineering Trades, seven Construction Trades, nine Miscellaneous Trades, four Business Trades, and 16 General Education Subjects.

Mohammed said that 61,104 candidates representing 68.18 per cent of the candidates that sat for the NBC and NTC examinations had five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

According to the NABTEB chief, the 2025 performance surpassed that of the June/July 2024 NBC/NTC examinations results, where 44,000 candidates representing 65.34% scored five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics, and 62,235 candidates, representing 92.42% obtained five credits and above with or without English Language and Mathematics.

He said that out of the total number of candidates graded for the examinations,

57,651, representing 62.07 per cent were males while 35,224, representing 37.93 per cent were females.

He said that the Board also achieved an increase in the number of candidates that enrolled for the examinations this year and number of centres used for the conduct of the exams compared to the enrollment figures and number of centres used last year.

The NABTEB registrar added that there was a significant decrease in the number of cases of examination malpractices in 2025 compared to the immediate past year.

Mohammed said: “The NABTEB examinations were conducted nationwide from Monday, 16th June to Thursday, 17th July 2025.

“A total of 92,875 candidates registered for the examinations in 1,892 centres as against 67,751 in 1,708 centers in 2024, which represents a 37.08% and 10.77% increase in enrollment and number of centres respectively.

“Analyses of the enrollment indicate that candidates enrolled for 16 Engineering Trades, 7 Construction Trades, 9 Miscellaneous Trades, 4 Business Trades, and 16 General Education Subjects.

“A total of 89,621 candidates were graded for the examinations, which represents 96.50% of the total enrolment.

“Furthermore, 57,651 (62.07%) males and 35,224 (37.93%) females enrolled for the examinations.

“In English language, 85,476 were graded with an overall pass of 79,575 (93.10%) and 5,901 (6.90%) fail. However, in comparison with the 2024 results, 63,866 (95.87%) pass and 2,753 (4.13%) fail.

“In Mathematics, 85,805 were graded, the overall pass is 81,172 (94.60%), and the fail is 4,633 (5.40%), but in comparison to 2024 results, 60,849 (91.39%) pass and 5,738 (8.61%) fail.”

The NABTEB chief added, “This infers that more candidates passed Mathematics while fewer candidates passed English Language this year when compared to last year’s examination results.

“The analyses further revealed that 61,104 candidates representing 68.18% of the candidates that sat for the NBC/NTC examinations scored five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics.

“A total of 74,633 candidates obtained 5 credits and above with or without English Language and Mathematics, which represents 83.28% of the candidates who sat for the same examinations.

“Comparatively, this performance is better when compared to the previous year’s June/July 2024 NBC/NTC examinations results, where 44,000 candidates representing 65.34% scored five credits and above including English Language and Mathematics, and 62,235 candidates, representing 92.42% obtained five credits and above with or without English Language and Mathematics.

“It was observed that 435 (0.47%) candidates out of the 92,875 who enrolled were involved in 516 incidences of examination malpractices, as against the 2024 record of 349 (0.52%) candidates’ involvement in 524 incidences.

“This is a decrease in the incidence of examination malpractices as recorded in this year 2025 June/July NBC/NTC examinations.”

The NABTEB boss noted in today’s 21st-century world, driven by innovation and knowledge economy, the need for comprehensive Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) which exposes candidates to needed technical and vocational skills was highly crucial.

NABTEB releases 2025 TVET examination results

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) has released results of the 2025 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for admission into Federal Technical Colleges.

It said 14,685 candidates representing 61% out of 29,260 candidates that sat for the examination scored below 50%.

Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, of NABTEB, Dr. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, announced the results in Benin City at the opening of a three-day working session for the 2025 National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) results and the Selection/Placement exercise of qualified candidates into the FTCs.

He said said 9,389 representing 39.00% scored 50% and above.

The NABTEB boss said 316 candidates representing 1.31% scored 70% and above.

Mohammed said he looked forward to a fair, transparent, and merit based selection process that would attract the most talented and motivated students.

He expressed confidence that a process right would set the students up success as well as enhance the reputation of NABTEB.

“I would like to particularly focus on the process of the selection of candidates into FTC’s. As we strive for excellence in our programs, it is crucial that we identify and admit students who are best-suited to benefit from our training offerings.

“Every successful candidate should be able to check his/her result on NABTEB portal, as soon as possible and immediately proceed to collect their admission letters from their respective school of admission.”

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said this year’s high rate of admission seekers into the FTCs was due to the free tuition introduced by President Bola Tinubu.

Alausa blamed previous low enrolment to apathy of parents and society towards TVET.

Represented by the Director, Technology and Science Education, Dr. Muyibat Olodo, he said plans were underway to disseminate and sensitize stakeholders on the National Policy on skills development.

With the free tuition initiative of the government for students of FTCs, societal acceptance of TVET is gaining more ground,” he said.

Admission seekers into FTCs for the 2025/2026 session soared by 287.76%.

NABTEB registrar: Reviving technical education key to Nigeria’s economic recovery

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), Dr. Mohammed Aminu, has stressed that Nigeria’s path to economic recovery and long-term prosperity lies in revitalising vocational and technical education.

Aminu disclosed this during a recent monitoring visit to two NABTEB examination centres in Lagos—Government Technical College, Agidingbi, Ikeja, and the Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC), Yaba.

Speaking after the visit, the registrar expressed satisfaction with the facilities and student conduct, particularly praising the Lagos State Government for its heavy investment in technical education.

“I’m amazed by what I’ve seen here. If all technical colleges across the country were like this, I’d be the happiest person. The workshops are equipped with modern, standard tools that reflect today’s technological demands. This is not just education; it’s practical readiness,” he said.

The visit, according to Aminu, was part of his national oversight responsibility to assess NABTEB examinations, inspect facilities, and engage stakeholders to promote continuous improvement in technical education.

He used the opportunity to call for a nationwide revival of technical and vocational training institutions, warning that Nigeria’s overdependence on imports and lack of local production capacity—exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic—posed a serious economic threat.

“COVID-19 was a wake-up call. It revealed our inability to produce or maintain essential tools and services locally. Any country that neglects technical and vocational education is courting economic disaster. We must bring back our trade centres and technical colleges—artisans, technicians, and craftsmen are the backbone of any productive economy,” he warned.

Aminu also criticised the country’s obsession with paper qualifications, advocating instead for a shift toward skill-based training as practised in more advanced economies.

“In Nigeria, employment depends on degrees and PhDs. But elsewhere, employers want to see what you can do, not what certificate you hold.”

Aminu praised the Federal Government’s current push for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), led by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, calling on citizens to support the initiative.

“If well implemented, this initiative will boost our GDP, reduce dependency, and move us toward self-sufficiency,” he said.

Reflecting on his history with the Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba, which he previously visited in 1981, 1989, and 1995, Dr. Aminu commended the transformation he witnessed during his 2025 visit.

“I was impressed by the improvement. The electrical department and the leadership team deserve high praise. This school has been a cornerstone of technical development in Nigeria.”

He also noted that the Yaba College, along with its Kaduna counterpart, was once at the forefront of Nigeria’s technical education system.

“Yaba and Kaduna were our flagship technical colleges. Sadly, Kaduna is struggling today. But Yaba is still holding strong, and I encourage the team to keep it up.”

Also speaking during the tour, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB), Moronke Azeez, welcomed the registrar’s positive assessment of Lagos’ technical education infrastructure.

“Despite the short notice of the visit, Dr. Mohammed was visibly impressed by what he saw — well-equipped workshops, standard classrooms, disciplined students. That speaks volumes about the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to technical education,” she said.

Azeez also advocated for greater inclusivity in Nigeria’s education system.

“We must end the bias against technical education. Our youth should be allowed to choose freely between general and vocational education and supported equally. That is how we build a nation rich in skills and balanced in development,” she said.

The Principal of FSTC Yaba, Mrs. Ajayi Adebimpe, also highlighted the relevance of vocational education in today’s world, noting that most student projects in the school, including furniture and notebooks, are produced in-house.

“Our students are not just learning theory. They are applying their skills every day. This hands-on approach gives them real-world confidence,” she said.

She urged parents to encourage their children to pursue technical education for self-reliance and appealed to private sector stakeholders to partner with the government in expanding TVET capacity.

“We need more hostels and classrooms to take in more students. The demand is high, and we don’t want to turn anyone away from this life-changing opportunity,” she said.
