  • Keita may miss Guinea’s AFCON matches

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Naby Keita has a high-grade adductor injury and will be out for two months and as such, is a huge doubt for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

“It was really unlucky. Bad news. High-grade adductor injury. The tendon is ruptured. Will keep him out for at least 2 months,” Klopp told the media in Europe.

“Bad news for us and for Guinea with the Africa Cup of Nations coming up. Not nice.”

The news comes as a huge blow to Afcon-bound Guinea. Injuries and inconsistency had stunted the growth of the midfielder at the Anfield outfit, having arrived in the summer as a £59 million ($62m) signing.

Asked about how Keita is taking the news of his recent injury on board, Klopp added: “For sure he’s not in the best moment but it’s okay I think.

  • Guinea’s Keita to miss AFCON 2019

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita will miss the rest of the season and the Africa Cup of Nations after being ruled out for two months with a groin injury, Jurgen Klopp said on Friday.

The Guinea international had to be substituted during the first half of Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat to Barcelona on Wednesday after going down following a challenge from Ivan Rakitic.

Keita, whose debut season at Anfield has been disrupted by injuries, was beginning to find form and had scored three goals in his previous five appearances for Liverpool.

“It’s bad news,” Klopp said at a news conference. “It’s a high grade abductor injury. The tendon is ruptured which keeps him out for at least I would say two months. So bad news for us, but bad news for Guinea as well because the African Cup of Nations are coming up.

“He was in a really good moment, a really good moment but it happened. Football and life are sometimes not too nice, but yeah very serious.”

Keita, 24, has made 35 international appearances for Guinea and was a key part of the team that qualified for the biennial tournament for the first time since 2015. The tournament, held this year in Egypt, gets underway June 21, with Guinea drawn alongside Nigeria, Madagascar and Burundi in Group B.

Liverpool travel to Newcastle United on Saturday and will return to the top of the Premier League with a win at St. James’ Park. The title remains in Manchester City’s hands, however, and Pep Guardiola’s side will win the league if they win their final two games — at home to Leicester on Monday and away to Brighton on the final day.

Defeat in Barcelona also left Liverpool’s Champions League aspirations hanging by a thread, with the Reds needing a big comeback at Anfield next week to turn the tie around.

Asked about how his side were dealing with the blow of losing heavily to Barcelona, Klopp said: “We didn’t need to pick players up in Barcelona and give them a hug. It’s in us. If you want to win in football you have to accept that you can lose. I had more positive thoughts about the game than negative because of what we did on the pitch.

“The boys are completely on fire. When you’re in the race, you don’t get tired. We are ambitious like hell. All we can do is beat Newcastle and that’s unbelievably difficult, what other teams do on Monday night isn’t our problem.”

  • Keita, Firmino give Liverpool 2-0 win over FC Porto

Goals from Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino earned Liverpool a 2-0 win over Porto on Tuesday in their UEFA Champions League quarter-finals first leg match.

Juergen Klopp’s side took the upper hand in the tie but without killing off their Portuguese opponents.

There remains plenty of work to do for the Premier League leaders, who will be disappointed they were unable to gain a bigger advantage for next week’s second leg.

On a bitterly cold night at Anfield, Liverpool were well below their best and Porto deserve credit for a determined performance after going two goals down in 26 minutes.

The visitors fired an early warning shot with Moussa Marega blasting narrowly wide in the second minute.

However, the home side took the lead three minutes later through a Keita shot which deflected off Porto midfielder Oliver Torres and beat the helpless Iker Casillas.

Mohamed Salah then forced Casillas into a low save with a sharp shot on the turn.

But the Egyptian should have done better in the 22nd minute when he placed the ball wide when through on goal, after being played in by a sloppy Porto pass.

Liverpool had their second four minutes later — Jordan Henderson split the Porto defence with a superb pass to Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose low cross was tapped in from close range by Firmino.

The Brazilian should have added to his tally, but blasted over after a good cross from Henderson.

The dangerous Marega then had a low drive well saved by the legs of Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker as Porto showed they were not about to roll over.

Sadio Mane had an effort ruled out for offside three minutes after the interval, but apart from another Marega effort in the 69th minute there were few clear-cut chances in the second half.

The Portuguese side fought well to stay in the game in a scrappy second half to give themselves a chance of a comeback at home in next week’s second leg. (Reuters/NAN)

  • Impressive Liverpool seek Wembley redemption

Liverpool will not have happy memories of their last visit to Wembley Stadium and will head south with a point to prove against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Eleven months ago Juergen Klopp’s side were swept aside 4-1 by a rampant Tottenham leading to a bout of navel-gazing that, as it transpired, helped transform Liverpool’s season.

The defensive lapses that undermined them that day were soon eradicated, the goals began to flow and with the addition of central defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in January, Liverpool became a force to be reckoned with.

The damage had already been done though and, just like every other contender, they never got anywhere near a Manchester City side that strolled to the English Premier League title.

They did reach the Champions League final and have continued the momentum into the new campaign, topping the table with four wins from four, scoring nine goals and conceding one.

Tottenham began with three wins but slipped up in their last game before the international break, losing 2-1 at Watford who are surprise joint-leaders.

Early in the season it may be, but the lunchtime clash will offer a pointer as to which club can push on and make a credible challenge to a City side who host Fulham.

Tottenham’s starting line-up will be similar to the one that started last year’s fixture after the London club bucked the trend by spending nothing in the transfer window.

Liverpool, on the other hand, splashed out in the region of 160 million pounds on the likes of Naby Keita, versatile Brazilian Fabinho, Brazil keeper Alisson and Swiss playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri from relegated Stoke City.

The Merseysiders have lost only one of their last 11 Premier League meetings against Tottenham but were also frustrated by them in a 2-2 draw at Anfield last season when Harry Kane scored a last-gasp penalty equaliser.

There is an edge between the clubs and Klopp knows three points on Saturday would send out a message of intent.

Defeat for Tottenham in a fixture that was supposed to be the christening of their new stadium will lead to further scrutiny of the decision to trust the same players that have achieved three successive top-three finishes but no silverware.

Watford’s best-ever start to a top-flight season will be put to the test as they take on a Manchester United side without striker Marcus Rashford, who was sent off in their morale-boosting win against Burnley.

Chelsea, who have quietly gone about their business under new manager Maurizio Sarri, are also 100 percent after four games and will relish a home clash against Cardiff City.

While Liverpool’s outlay on new players has, so far, proved beneficial, the same cannot be said of West Ham United.

The London club bolstered their squad with nearly 100 million pounds worth of new signings for incoming manager Manuel Pellegrini, but are pointless after four games.

Things do not get any easier either with West Ham away to Everton on Sunday.

  • Liverpool agree club record deal for Keita

Liverpool agree club record deal for Keita

Liverpool FC of England on Monday agreed a club record deal to sign RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita, with the midfielder only moving to Anfield in July 2018.

The Reds have agreed to pay the £48 million release clause which will allow the 22-year-old to move next summer, plus an undisclosed premium.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Keita had been one of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s primary targets this summer, but Leipzig have been refusing to sell.

The deal will surpass the £35 million paid to Newcastle for Andy Carroll in 2011.

RB Leipzig finished second behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga last season, meaning they qualified for the Champions League group stage.

Liverpool had already had two offers for the Guinea international rejected this summer, with the second understood to be about £70 million.

But now a compromise deal has been reached, with Leipzig keeping their prize asset this season and Liverpool getting the player next summer.

The Reds have so far this summer signed winger Mohamed Salah from Roma for £34 million, full-back Andrew Robertson from Hull for £8 million and striker Dominic Solanke after his contract at Chelsea expired.

The Anfield club are also prepared to test Monaco’s resolve to keep midfielder Thomas Lemar by offering to pay about £60 million before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Leipzig to Liverpool: €75m too small for Naby Keita

German bundesliga side RB Leipzig have dug their heels in over Liverpool target Naby Keita, rejecting a €75million bid for the midfielder.

The Guinea international was one of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s star players as Leipzig finished second to Bayern Munich in their maiden Bundesliga campaign.

Keita’s all-action style has reportedly caught the attention of Jurgen Klopp, who has added Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke to his squad thus far as the Reds look to build on last season’s fourth-place finish.

Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz confirmed that the Bundesliga new boys, who – like Liverpool – are plotting for the Champions League next term, revealed exactly to what extent Leipzig are prepared to go to in order to keep hold of their star man.

Mateschitz told Sport Bild: “Lately we got a €75m offer for Naby Keita. No way!

“He has a contract and he will accomplish it. To sell him would not only be a proof of distrust to our fans but also the wrong sign for our players like Timo Werner, who is in demand too.”

Earlier this month, Leipzig sporting director Ralf Rangnick claimed that the club would resist offers breaching €100m for Keita, which could prompt the Reds to focus their attention elsewhere.

Klopp has already begun clearing the decks in midfield, letting Lucas Leiva join Lazio after a decade at Anfield.

The Brazilian struggled to hold down a regular spot under Klopp, and was often deployed in defence, but the German had nothing but praise for the Rome-bound player.

“It goes without saying that all of the lads wish him the very best and from my own point of view I’ve got no doubt that he will be a success in Italy because he is one of the best professionals I have worked with,” Klopp said.

“But even though he’s not going to be at Liverpool anymore he is leaving a legacy behind.

“He set the standards of what it is to be a Liverpool player and by doing that he gave all of us an example to follow and that will continue after he has gone.”

RB Leipzig places £26m tag on Naby Keita

Liverpool and Arsenal have reportedly been told that they will have to pay £26m to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita.

The 22-year-old has starred in the Bundesliga this season, with Leipzig currently sitting in second place in Germany’s top flight, but his performances have inevitably attracted interest from other clubs.

The two Premier League giants are said to be keen on the Guinean but according to Bild, they will have to shell out £26m to open discussions over a potential move.

It has been suggested that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is an admirer of the player, while Arsenal are said to be keen to strengthen in the centre of the pitch.

Leipzig sporting director Ralf Rangnick has previously said that they remain confident of keeping hold of Keita ahead of next season.
