NAF wings 12 pilots to battle terrorists, others

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has winged 12 additional pilots to enhance the ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations in some parts of the country.

The pilots were winged yesterday at Basic Flying Course 20 at the 403 Flying Training School (FTS) in Kano.

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, who performed the winging, urged the pilots to sustain the successes recorded in the various theatres of operation to justify the efforts and resources the country invested in their training.

The CAS said the NAF had continued to conduct independent and joint operations aimed at decimating the criminals and denying them freedom of action.

He said the air force had also shaped the operational environment in the various theatres, adding that the achievements could “only be sustained with the injection of new and vibrant pilots to add energy and bite to the operations”.

Abubakar noted that the winging ceremony was significant, “coming at a time when the NAF has immensely benefited from the Federal Government’s determination to provide necessary platforms and equipment in the fight against terrorism, insurgency and other forms of criminality”.

The CAS said the acquisition of new platforms had consequences on manpower, training, and operating costs.

This challenge, he said, is further exacerbated by the anticipated arrival of an array of new platforms such as the M-346, AH-1Z, A-109 Trekker, and the remaining T-129 ATAK helicopters.

According to him, for NAF to bridge the manpower gaps, a three-year training plan from next January must be sustained amid the availability of funding.

“It was in view of this projection that the graduation of the Basic Flying Course 20 was gladdening, as it serves to bridge the pilot deficiency gap,” Abubakar said.

The NAF boss said the current security environment has remained fluid and unpredictable due to threats posed by terrorists in the North, secessionist groups in the Southeast, crude oil theft in the Southsouth, as well as an upsurge in banditry and kidnapping activities across the country.

He advised the newly wing pilots to continually strive to elevate the NAF to greater heights.

The pilots were winged on Thursday, November 23, at Basic Flying Course-20 at the 403 Flying Training School (FTS), Kano.

Performing the winging ceremony, Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, charged the pilots to justify the efforts and resources the country invested in their training by contributing their best towards sustaining the successes recorded in the various theatres of operation.

Air Marshal Abubakar said the NAF has continued to conduct independent and joint operations aimed at not only decimating the criminals and denying them freedom of action but also shaping the operational environment in the various theatres, which he said could “only be sustained with the injection of new and vibrant pilots to add energy and bite to the operations.”

According to him, the acquisition of new platforms comes with the attendant consequences on manpower, training, and operating costs.

This challenge, he said, is further exacerbated by the anticipated arrival of an array of new platforms such as the M-346, AH-1Z, A-109 Trekker, and the remaining T-129 ATAK helicopters.

He said for NAF to bridge the manpower gaps currently experienced, a 3-year training plan to commence in January 2024 must be sustained amid the availability of funding.

He noted: “It was in view of this projection that the graduation of the Basic Flying Course 20 was gladdening, as it serves to bridge the pilot deficiency gap.”

The NAF’s chief said the current security environment has remained fluid and unpredictable due to threats posed by terrorists in the North, secessionist groups in the South East, crude oil theft in the South-South, as well as an upsurge in banditry and kidnapping activities across the entire country.

He, therefore, changed the new wing pilots to continually strive to elevate the NAF to greater heights.

Earlier in his remarks, the Air Officer Commanding Air Training Command, Air Vice Marshal Nnamdi Ananaba, said: “Beyond merely producing qualified pilots for the NAF, the objective of the flying course is to produce pilots that are significantly knowledgeable to operate the new and highly technical platforms being inducted into the NAF.”

Air Vice Marshal Ananaba said the addition of 12 fast jet pilots to NAF’s inventory is a significant boost to its preparedness to receive and operate the significant number of platforms expected to be inducted into service.

NAF strikes destroy six illegal refineries, five boats in Rivers

Strikes by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) have destroyed six illegal refining sites and five Cotonou boats at Cawthorne Channel and Alakri in Rivers State.

The strikes were parts of efforts by the military’s efforts to combat oil theft and checkmate the activities of economic saboteurs in the Niger Delta.

NAF’s spokesperson Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet disclosed this in a statement yesterday.

He said the strikes were carried out on Sunday after the NAF received intelligence about the presence of three Illegal Refining Sites (IRS) and two Cotonou boats siphoning crude oil from the pipelines at Cawthorne Channel and Alakri

Gabkwet said: “Similar strikes were also carried out at Krakama in Rivers State, on the same day, on three Cotonou boats sighted conveying suspected illegal refined products. “NAF aircraft equally struck some sites at Dariama village in Rivers State, following intelligence report of illegal refining activities near the location. On arrival, three IRS with tanks, pipes and pumping machines as well as Cotonou Boats loaded with suspected illegally refined products were sighted, engaged and subsequently destroyed.”

According to the NAF’s spokesperson, the intensified air operations were proactive measures to safeguard the economic interests of the nation and deter criminals involved in oil theft.

NAF air strikes kill several terrorists, destroy four gun trucks in Borno

Air strikes by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighters jets have killed several terrorists and destroyed four gun trucks in Ajigin and Banki Junction areas located in Borno State

The air strikes also destroyed terrorists’ enclaves situated 1.9km South of Ajigin.

NAF’s spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, said this in a statement on Sunday November 12.

Gabkwet said the terrorists had hidden  four gun-trucks under thick shrubs and perfected plans to attack military locations around Damboa and Wajiroko.

He said: “During the air strike conducted on November 8, three   of the gun-trucks were struck, as evidenced by the thick black smoke and fire from the trucks after the strike, while the last gun-truck was observed fleeing the scene of the strike.

“The truck was subsequently tailed for about 26 Km and thereafter disappeared under a tree. The truck was subsequently struck and observed to be on fire with no sign of movement at the location.

“The destruction of the 4 gun trucks, along with the occupants, effectively degraded the capability of the terrorists to attack friendly forces and locals within the area.”

The  NAF’s  spokesperson said air interdiction missions were also conducted at a location 7km East of Banki Junction on 11 November 2023.

According to him,  the location was a well-known terrorists’ enclave hitherto deserted but suddenly active with high terrorists’ activities and used as a logistics storage area and staging area to attack troops locations at Bank Junction.

“The need to attack the location thus became necessary. Accordingly, NAF aircraft were scrambled to interdict the location. The aftermath of the strike revealed the destruction of the location with the logistics sites on fire,” Gabkwet said.

He said the terrorists have continued to be at the receiving end, due to strong fire power from the military, which he said has denied terrorists hiding place and weaken their capability to attack soft targets.

“Indeed, the inability of these terrorists to move freely and at will is also attributed to the effectiveness of the operational jointness exhibited, especially by the air and ground troops, which should be commended,” Gabkwet said.

    • Killers of 24 Yobe mourners attacked

There are strong indications that Boko Haram terrorists, who killed 24 mourners at Nguro Kayayya village in Gaidem Local Government of Yobe State, have been killed by the military.

The mourners on October 31 were on their way to bury victims of a previous Boko Haram attack when the terrorists planted Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on their path, killing 24 of them.

But NAF’s spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, said air strikes by NAF’ component of Operation Hadin Kai, on November 3 killed the terrorists responsible for the killings.

Gabkwet, in a statement yesterday, said the terrorists were killed at their meeting point near Degbawa, a reclusive location within the Mandara Mountains in Goza Local Government of Borno State.

The spokesperson said the terrorists had “planned to meet to review the attack as well as plan the next line of attack on innocent civilians and other vulnerable targets.”

Gabkwet said: “The air strikes were called for after intelligence showed the sighting of some key terrorists’ figures and their foot soldiers arriving at the location for a probable meeting.

“Their gathering in large numbers raised concerns, thus necessitating the need for an air interdiction on the location with devastating outcomes for the terrorists. An assessment of the location after the strike showed several terrorists were eliminated.

“According to sources, the particular location was carefully chosen by the terrorists to evade being easily detected, especially by NAF aircraft. The outcome of the strike, however, proved the terrorists wrong as their nefarious plans to meet were detected, thus leading to the success of the air strike.

“The sources also noted that this strike was a major setback for the terrorists who have, of late, been at the receiving end of the air and land components of Operation Hadin Kai.

“There were also strong indications that these terrorists were responsible for the recent attack on some indigenes in Geidam on October 31, 2023 and had planned to meet to review the attack as well as plan the next line of attack on innocent civilians and other vulnerable targets.”

The NAF’s spokesperson also said troops of Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD) in the Northwest killed several terrorists during air strikes at the hideout of a notorious terrorists kingpin, Badaru, in Kankara Local Government of Katsina State, on November 1.

Gabkwet said: “Air strikes were also carried out at the enclave of terrorist kingpin known as Mai Solar in Maru Local Government of Zamfara State.

“The air strikes took out clusters of enclaves used as hideout by the kingpin and his cohorts at the location.

“It was a successful strike, as few survivors were observed fleeing the scene of the strike. There is no confirmation if Mai Solar was among the terrorists eliminated.”

The two T-129 ATAK helicopters delivered to the Federal Government three days ago by a Turkish defence company will soon be inducted into the inventory of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

The helicopters were among the six procured by the Federal Government in 2022 as part of efforts to fight terrorism and other security challenges confronting the country.

The T129 helicopter has the capacity to perform well in hot temperatures and high altitudes.

NAF’s spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, disclosed this in a statement yesterday.

The Nation recalls that the Minister of Defence Muhammad Badaru and the Chief of Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshall Hassan Abubakar had a few days ago visited Turkey to facilitate quick delivery of the helicopters.

Gabkwet said the remaining helicopters are expected to be delivered before the end of the second quarter of 2024.

He said the NAF has witnessed a total overhaul and enhancement of its Order of Battle with procurement of new platforms and recent delivery of DA-62 surveillance aircraft and T129 helicopters.

According to the NAF’s spokesperson, the Chief of Air Staff “assured that with the additional platforms and others being expected in no time, as well as the renewed vigour of the NAF under his leadership, Nigerians can rest assured of the commitment of the NAF to ensuring total eradication of the myriads of security challenges facing the nation.”

He said: “Air Marshal Abubakar reminded the personnel about the prevalent security challenges facing the nation, and noted that the concerted efforts of the NAF alongside other security agencies would ensure that all forms of criminality and the criminals’ freedom of movement are reduced to the barest minimum.”

Speaking on the NAF’s 2023 Annual 10km Walk/Jog for its personnel in Abuja yesterday, the NAF’s spokesperson said the exercise was “part of efforts geared towards ensuring a high level of physical fitness and mental alertness for operational readiness and effectiveness.”

Gabkwet said: “Air Marshal Abubakar commended the participants for showcasing high level of fitness, noting that the citizens depend on the members of the Armed Forces for their safety of lives and property, which cannot be achieved without physical fitness and mental alertness.

“The CAS emphasised that sporting events like the 10 Km Walk/Jog was also aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence amongst personnel and their families as well as serve as an avenue for discovering new talents for the upcoming 2024 Armed Forces Games.”

“While highlighting the importance of regular exercises to keep fit, the CAS stated that it is essential for military personnel as it prepares them for occupational demand of roles.

“The CAS said whether being deployed in an operating theatre or undertaking routine tasks, we are expected to always maintain a high level of physical and mental readiness. As airmen and airwomen, the success of the NAF directly reflects on our skills and competence which are also tied to our physical, mental and intellectual wellbeing, which is critical to attaining our overall objective.”

NAF bags Global PR Award on crisis management in Barcelona

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has clinched the 2023 Golden World Award (GWA) on ‘Crisis Management’ instituted by the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) for outstanding PR campaigns.

The NAF won the prize for providing enablement for news and third-party narratives on counterinsurgency, in partnership with Image Merchants Promotion (IMPR) Limited, publishers of PRNigeria and Economic Confidential.

IPRA Secretary-General, Philip Sheppard, commended the Air Force and IMPR for the alternative narratives and media reports widely circulated to boost citizens’ confidence as well as troops’ morale.

AT3 Resources, the strategic communications partner of Meta in West Africa, won the ‘Technology Category’ with its multi-pronged campaign, “#NoFalseNewsZone” in Nigeria and Ghana.

After receiving the award from IPRA President Dr. Anne-gret Iturriaga Abarzua, NAF Chief of Administration, Air Vice Marshal Idi Sani, dedicated the glory to the military personnel facing the fire and sacrificing everything to keep the country safe.

“This recognition means a lot to the men and women who toil day and night in finding lasting solutions to security problems. The Nigerian Air Force finds itself in the middle of this situation, hence the need to deploy its fleet in decimating criminals.

“However, achievements sometime get drowned in doubts expressed by citizens, especially when we are the source of the success stories. The need to think outside the box gave birth to the utilisation of a third-party medium to tell our story.

“The level of our successes told by a third party received overwhelming cheers from many Nigerians. We recommend this strategy, particularly to military institutions who find it difficult to sell their own story.

“I must also state that this strategy was implementable through the directive of our amiable Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, whose inspirational leadership style has taken us to where we are today,” Sani added.

NAF air strikes hit terrorists hideouts, kill several in Borno, Zamfara

Air strikes by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF’) fighter jets have killed several Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in Borno State.

The air strikes also destroyed six terrorists gun trucks and 40 motorcycles at their hideout in Bukar Meram along the fringes of Lake Chad.

NAF’ spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, October 16.

Gabkwet said a stream of airstrikes by NAF’ components of military operations across the country have continued to record successes.

He said: “In Borno State, the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), in the early hours of 14 October 2023, carried out air interdiction missions at a newly identified terrorists’ hideout at Bukar Meram, near the Lake Chad region.

” The strikes became necessary after it was established that the recent relocation of terrorists from Suwa to Bukar Meram general area was with the likely intent for possible resurgence of attacks on ground troops and innocent civilians.

Consequently, air strikes were authorized at the location in Bukar Meram to decimate the terrorists. Feedback received after the strikes revealed the expected outcome was achieved as several terrorists were neutralized while over 40 motorcycles and 6 gun trucks were destroyed, thereby degrading their ability to attack ground troops as well as innocent Nigerians.”

The spokesperson said successes were recorded on 11 October 2023 when  NAF’ aircrafts bombarded terrorists enclaves in Sangeko axis of Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

“The terrorists, who were in a convoy of about 70 motorcycles on the road track leading from Kabaro towards Sangeko, were subsequently engaged with several neutralized, their motorcycles destroyed, and others injured,” Gabkwet said.

He said the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, had commended the professionalism and dedication of the Air Components in the various theaters of operation.

“Your efforts and support to the ground troops is commendable. Stay focused and do not be complacent as we must continue to give our citizens the confidence they deserve to thrive,” the statement said.
