NAF pledges support for military institutions to produce battle-ready officers

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has expressed readiness to support the Nigerian Defence Academy and other military training institutions to produce battle-ready officers armed with modern skill that could surmount contemporary security challenges.

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, gave the assurance when played host to the Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Maj.-Gen. Oluyemi Olatoye, at the NAF Headquarters, Abuja.

He said, “Sustaining a professional and combat-ready officer corps requires sustained collaboration in training, faculty development, capacity building, and exposure to real-time operational environments.”

Air Marshal Aneke who once served as Deputy Commandant of the NDA, described the NDA as “the cradle of military professionalism, where the future leadership of the Armed Forces is shaped.”

He noted that the NDA remains central to producing officers who are “mentally resilient, morally upright, and operationally prepared to defend our nation in an evolving security environment.”

The CAS assured the NDA Commandant of the NAF’s readiness to deepen cooperation.

“The Nigerian Air Force will continue to support the NDA to ensure it produces officers who are fully equipped to contribute meaningfully to national defence,” he said.

The Commandant pledged to build on the structures, reforms, and legacies established by his predecessors.

He said the NDA under his leadership will strengthen collaboration with all services of the Armed Forces.

“We are committed to ensuring that the Academy remains globally competitive, academically sound, and strategically aligned with the contemporary needs of the Armed Forces,” he said.

Gen. Olatoye said the NDA was dedicated to enhancing its curriculum, leadership development frameworks, and character-moulding processes, noting that “our goal is to produce officers who embody excellence, discipline, and readiness for the demands of modern warfare.”

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets bombed a terrorist hideout in Sambisa Forest, killing several terrorists and destroying their camp.

The strikes came days after terrorists ambushed and killed two soldiers and two Civilians JTF along Damboa axis of Borno State.

NAF spokesman , Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, revealed this in a statement Wednesday night.

He said the strikes were conducted yesterday within the Sambisa general area, after a series of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions that tracked terrorist movements, following the 17 October ambush on ground troops at KASHOMRI.

“Persistent ISR coverage over KASHOMRI and Sambisa revealed suspicious activities and active terrorist structures at ARRA, prompting a deliberate, intelligence-driven strike.

“NAF air assets acquired and engaged designated objectives through coordinated, successive passes.

“The strike achieved its intended effect with the complete destruction of all identified targets, significantly degrading the terrorists’ operational capabilities and disrupting their command and logistics networks,” the NAF spokesperson said.

NAF bombs terrorists’ enclave in Zamfara, eliminate scores

Scores of terrorists were neutralised in Zamfara State when the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets bombed their enclave at Sauri, Tsafe Local Government Area of the state.

The strikes also destroyed terrorists’ critical structures and logistics points, a move that may likely withered the criminals’ operational capability in the area.

This came a day after Minister of State for Defence Bello Mattawale announced that the Federal Government had deployed additional troops and ordered decisive action against armed groups across the state.

According to a statement by NAF’s spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, on Saturday, the strikes were conducted on November 14, after “comprehensive intelligence and surveillance operations confirmed significant terrorist activity and rustled livestock concealed in a high-ground hideout used by the criminals as both a defensive position and a logistics hub.”

The statement said the Air Component, acting on the intelligence, executed multiple coordinated strikes on the identified targets, achieving direct hits that dislodged surviving terrorists who attempted to flee into surrounding vegetation but were subsequently tracked and effectively engaged.

“The successful mission resulted in the neutralisation of numerous terrorists and the destruction of critical structures and logistics points, significantly degrading the criminals’ operational capability in the area,” it said.

The statement said the decisive action by the Air Component against the terrorists reinforced the recent directive of the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, to “find them, hunt them down, and protect our people.”

It said the operation also underscored the unwavering resolve of the Joint Task Force and the NAF under the Operation FANSAN YAMMA to “deny terrorists safe havens, strengthen security in Zamfara State, and support wider national efforts to restore lasting peace and stability across the North West.”

NAF donates cash, borehole to 2021 community bombing victims in Yobe

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has donated cash assistance and a solar-powered borehole to victims of the September 2021 accidental airstrike in Buhari Village, Yunusari Local Government Area of Yobe.

Air Commodore Ecomo U. U. Idris, the Air Component Commander, Joint Task Force (North-East) Operation Hadin Kai, disclosed this on Saturday in Damaturu while presenting the donation on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar.

Idris said the donation was approved by the NAF Headquarters as part of efforts to support the affected families and mitigate the impact of the unfortunate incident.

He explained that the 2021 bombing, which claimed eight lives and injured 30 persons, was accidental, stressing that it occurred while troops targeted an insurgents’ enclave within the area.

“This incident was not intentional. It was a mistake that happened during an operation targeting criminal elements in the area,” Idris said.

He reaffirmed NAF’s commitment to maintaining high standards of civilian harm mitigation, stating that every operation was guided by strict rules of engagement to prevent harm to non-combatants.

Idris commended Gov. Mai Mala Buni for facilitating the engagement between NAF and the victims’ families, adding that the service would continue to work with the state government to sustain peace and security in the region.

Idris prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims and reaffirmed NAF’s resolve to deepen community engagement in all its operational areas across the North-East.

Also speaking, retired Brig.-Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam, Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, said the Yobe Government had earlier supported the victims with medical care and logistics immediately after the 2021 incident.

He described the gesture by NAF as a demonstration of empathy and responsibility, adding that the air strike, though regrettable, was a consequence of the complex nature of counter-insurgency warfare in the North-East.

Abdulsalam said the NAF headquarters approved a compensation of N1million each for families of deceased victims and N500,000 each for those who sustained injuries.

He added that a solar-powered borehole would be constructed in Guro-Buhari to provide clean water for the residents as part of NAF’s quick-impact community projects.

“The victims’ names had been verified and authenticated by the Office of the Attorney-General and the NAF headquarters to ensure transparency.

*There will be no proxy collection,” Abdulsalam said.

He urged the residents of the community to continue cooperating with the security agencies to ensure lasting peace and the final defeat of insurgents in the region.

NAF seeks stronger partnership with journalists, emphasizes responsible reporting

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has called for stronger collaboration and mutual understanding between the military and the media, stressing that journalists are critical partners in safeguarding national security.

The Director of Public Relations and Information (DOPRI) of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, made the call during an interactive session with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, who paid a courtesy visit to the NAF Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

Air Commodore Ejodame described journalists as vital allies in the collective effort to promote peace, unity, and public confidence in national institutions. He likened the relationship between the Air Force and the media to a marriage built on trust, mutual respect, and open communication.

“When you call yourselves frontline workers, that is exactly how we see you in the Air Force. We operate in different spaces, but both of us deal with information that can save lives,” he said.

“Our relationship with the media is like a marriage — there must be trust, honesty, and understanding. Some conversations belong in the public domain, while others require discretion.”

The NAF spokesperson explained that information management during military operations must be handled with care, as the release of certain details could compromise missions or endanger personnel.

“In military operations, information is intelligence. A simple statistic like casualty figures or troop movements can compromise operations if mishandled,” he cautioned.

“When we decline to provide certain details, it is not secrecy or arrogance; it’s often a matter of protecting lives.”

Ejodame emphasized that in an era of fake news and social media misinformation, journalists have an even greater responsibility to verify and contextualize reports on national security. According to him, premature or inaccurate publications can inadvertently serve the interests of insurgents or other hostile groups.

He urged the media to always consider the national interest and the safety of security personnel when reporting sensitive issues.

The NAF spokesman also noted that the service is evolving into a smarter and more people-focused force, prioritizing precision, intelligence, and the protection of civilians in its operations.

“The Nigerian Air Force is not just about bombs and bullets. We are developing an Air Force that deploys smarter air power — technology-driven, precise, and sensitive to civilian safety,” he said.

“Our focus now is on smarter operations and the protection of communities.”

Ejodame reiterated NAF’s commitment to continuous community engagement and expressed readiness to partner with the NUJ on training and capacity-building initiatives to enhance defense and security reporting.

    > “We look forward to working closely with the NUJ to build capacity in responsible reporting and strengthen understanding between the military and the media,” he added.

Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ, FCT Council, Grace Ike, commended the Nigerian Air Force for its professionalism and recent achievements in national security operations. She reaffirmed the union’s commitment to objective and responsible journalism in the interest of national unity and development.

The courtesy visit, she said, was aimed at strengthening the partnership between the media and the Air Force, particularly in the areas of information management, countering fake news, and public enlightenment on security matters.

    > “The Nigerian Air Force has continued to play a vital role in ensuring national security and unity. As journalists, we understand the importance of responsible reporting, especially in times of conflict and insecurity,” she stated.

“We believe that open communication between the military and the media is key to building public trust and combating misinformation.”

Ike also expressed the union’s readiness to collaborate with the Air Force on media training, capacity building, and corporate social responsibility initiatives, noting that such partnerships would enhance professionalism and deepen mutual understanding.

She further congratulated the Nigerian Air Force Football Team for their victory in the recently concluded NUJ FCT Football Tournament, describing the win as a reflection of discipline, teamwork, and excellence — qualities that, she said, mirror the core values of the Nigerian Air Force.

    • PDP decries rising insecurity in Northcentral state

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF)’s Component of Operation Fansan Yamma (OPFY), Sector 3, has conducted successful airstrikes on hostile elements in Kwara State.

Its Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, said this in a statement yesterday.

According to the statement, the air component carried out multiple coordinated missions on Sunday across Kakihun, Oke-Ode, Babanla, and surrounding areas.

Reconnaissance and close air support operations were launched to deter threats, targeting hostile elements spotted east of Babanla.

Ejodame added that concurrent surveillance flights covered key settlements and military positions, gathering vital intelligence to support ground operations.

“These missions reaffirm NAF’s commitment to protecting troops and civilians, maintaining air superiority, and sustaining pressure on hostile actors.

“All operations were completed successfully,” he said.

He further assured Nigerians of the Air Force’s resolve to defend the nation’s territorial integrity and protect communities from threats.

“Citizens are encouraged to remain confident, vigilant, and supportive of the Armed Forces as decisive actions continue to restore lasting peace and security across the country,” he added.

Also, the Kwara State Police Command, in collaboration with the National Forest Security Service (NFSS), has started manhunt for the killers of 12 persons in Kwara community.

Gunmen suspected to be bandits last Sunday invaded Oke-Ode community, Ifelodun Local Government Area and shot dead a monarch and 11 vigilance members.

The spokesperson of the state Police Command, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said: “Manhunt operations are ongoing, and the command assures residents that those responsible will be brought to justice.”

The state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  has raised the spate of killings and kidnappings.

The party expressed “our deepest sorrow and outrage over the gruesome massacre of innocent citizens in Oke-Ode community by heartless bandits.

“To us, this is a despicable and senseless act and it is the height of man’s inhumanity to man which must be condemned by all people of conscience,” PDP’s Publicity Secretary, Olusegun  Adewara, said in a statement.

Adewara added that “the PDP condoles with the entire Oke-Ode community, particularly the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this callous onslaught by criminals that appear to have overpowered the Kwara State Government and are tactically taking over the state.

“Our hearts are broken for the families and friends of those brutally killed and the many now struggling in hospitals. The gruesome videos of the casualties circulating online make it look like Kwara is at war.

“It is painfully clear that these criminals have overpowered the Kwara State Government and are basically taking over our state. What makes this tragedy even worse is the casual, “levity hand” way the Kwara State Government is treating the whole situation.

“A responsible and responsive leader should visit Oke-Ode, stand with the mourners, and assure citizens of decisive action.”

“Sadly, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has chosen to focus his energy on attacking the opposition, particularly Senator Bukola Saraki, rather than confronting the deepening insecurity ravaging the state.

“We re-echo the voice of our leader: the opposition is not the governor’s problem. His real challenge lies in his own incompetence, nonchalance, and confused handling of the state’s worsening security situation.

“Under the governor’s watch, terror is reigning, kidnappers are taking over rural villages and nowhere is safe again

“What Kwara is experiencing is unprecedented, unfortunate, and a monumental leadership failure.

“While we pray for the repose of the souls of those killed in this senseless attack and wish the injured quick recovery, we urge Governor Abdulrazaq to wake up from his slumber and stop dismissing every call for action as mere politics.

“The protection of lives and property is the primary responsibility of the government, and any leader who fails in this duty has failed woefully in every other area of governance.”

NAF airstrikes kill 25 terrorists in Borno, Yobe

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has killed more than 25 terrorists in a coordinated night air operation at Bula in Yobe and Banki axis of Borno.

This is contained in a statement by the Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, on Saturday in Abuja.

Ejodame said the operations were conducted on Sept. 18 following intelligence from ground troops.

He said a force package of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) assets and strike aircraft tracked terrorist movements and identified multiple groups north of Banki.

He said real-time updates were relayed to ground forces and base operations, enabling synchronised action.

“The strike aircraft engaged the terrorists in three successive precision strikes on their movement routes and assembly areas, effectively neutralising more than 25 fighters.

“Post-strike surveillance confirmed ground forces remained in defensive positions, with no further threats observed,” he said.

Ejodame said the operation underscored NAF’s decisive support to ground troops, denial of terrorist freedom of action, and unwavering commitment to securing Nigeria’s North-East.

NAF strikes kill several terrorists, destroy structures in Borno

Air strikes by the Nigerian Air Force NAF (NAF) have killed several terrorists and destroyed their enclave at Bula Madibale in the Gezuwa general area of Borno State.

NAF’s spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, announced this in a statement on Thursday.

According to Ejodame, the precision strikes were carried out at about 20:50am, on Wednesday, September 17, after intelligence and surveillance revealed a gathering of about 45 terrorists in the areas.

He said two terrorist flags were seen hoisted at the location, underscoring the area being use as a stronghold and rallying point of the terrorists.

“Acting on this credible intelligence, the Aie Component of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) launched a coordinated air interdiction,” Ejodame said.

“The strikes achieved a devastating impact, eliminating several terrorists at the gathering point, while the flagged structure and other hostile assets at the gathering point were destroyed.”

  • NAF airstrikes knockout terrorists’ camps in Kaduna, Katsina

NAF airstrikes knockout terrorists’ camps in Kaduna, Katsina

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), says the Air Component of Operation Whirl Punch and Hadarin Daji have eliminated terrorists’ enclaves killing scores in Kaduna and Katsina States.

This is contained in a statement by the Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, AVM Edward Gabkwet, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Gabkwet said the air strikes by the Air Component of Operation Whirl Punch on terrorists’ enclave in Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State between May 30 and May 31, yielded the requisite outcome.

He said the strikes were executed at the stronghold of the infamous terrorist, Buharinyadi, situated at Bula Forest area in Giwa LGA of the state.

The strikes, he said, prompted by painstaking Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (IRS) operations conducted in the targeted vicinity where several clusters of thatched roofed huts within compounds were observed amid thick vegetation.

Gabkwet said the surveillance also confirmed a substantial presence of armed terrorists loitering around the huts and over 13 motorcycles seen tucked under a large umbrella tree.

He added that a targeted exploitation of multiple sources revealed that the terrorists at the location were responsible for most of the attacks and kidnappings in several communities within Birnin Gwari, Igabi and Giwa LGAs.

“Accordingly, the Air Component dispatched its available air assets to strike the location.

“Overhead the location, scores of the terrorists were sighted and subsequently struck, bringing effective and maximum damage on the targets and their equipment.

“Following a tip that some of the surviving terrorists had relocated 500 meters west of the interdicted location, a follow up strike was immediately conducted, with a post-strike Battle Damage Assessment revealing the neutralisation of several terrorists and their hideouts engulfed in flames,” he said.

The NAF spokesman said that similar air strikes were also carried out by the Air Component of Operation Hadarin Daji on June 2, at Zango Hill in Kankara LGA of Katsina State.

He said that intelligence revealed that the location which had a cluster of huts and zinc roofed structures with multiple human and livestock movements, was being used by a terrorists’ kingpin, Alhaji Iliya and his cohorts.

Gwabket said that air interdiction was conducted over the location to decimate the terrorists, destroy their weapons and mobility.

“After the strike, Battle Damage Assessment footages and feedback received revealed that the strikes were successful as several terrorists were eliminated and their structures engulfed in flames.

“The NAF, in collaboration with surface forces, will continue to sustain domination of the battlespace through extensive situational awareness, constant patrols, and targeted interdiction of terrorists’ safe havens within its various Areas of Responsibility.

“Still, a whole of society approach remains a key factor in the ongoing efforts to minimise the threats posed by criminal elements,” he said.
