NANS, Fed Govt set for dialogue over fuel crisis, others

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is set for dialogue with the federal government on how to resolve the fuel crisis and electricity issue.

A statement by NANS Senate President, Akinteye Afeez and other NANS zonal coordinators noted that it had suspended its proposed national protest aimed at addressing the fuel scarcity crisis and demanding the resignation of key officials in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) and the Ministry of Power.

They said NANS will continue engagement with the government and advocate for the implementation of demands to address the causes of the fuel scarcity crisis and improve the energy sector.

The statement reads: “Our decision to suspend mobilization towards a national protest till further notice comes as a result of our collective recognition that lasting solutions often emerge from constructive dialogue and negotiation. As the saying goes, “the longest war in history was resolved on the round table,” underscoring the importance of diplomacy and peaceful resolution in addressing complex issues.

“While our initial call for protest was driven by frustration and urgency in addressing the fuel scarcity and electricity crisis gripping our nation, we recognize the potential for meaningful change through dialogue. By engaging in discussions with government officials, stakeholders, and relevant parties, we aim to seek sustainable solutions that address the root causes of the challenges facing the energy sector.

“Furthermore, we acknowledge the hardships faced by Nigerians due to the fuel scarcity crisis, and we do not wish to exacerbate their suffering with unnecessary protests. “The government has reached out to us to initiate dialogue and has provided assurances that measures will be taken to end the fuel scarcity crisis and also promised improvement in Electricity supply before the end of next week. While we remain vigilant in our pursuit of accountability and good governance, we believe that engaging in dialogue presents an opportunity to address our concerns through constructive means.” NANS called on all student structures and sister bodies to join the dialogue process towards achieving lasting peace and meaningful change in the nation.

NANS: call to sack power minister mere blackmail

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has described the call to sack Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, as mere blackmail and propaganda meant to tarnish the image of the minister.

It said the purported call to remove Adelabu was to discredit the minister, who is working on the mandate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sanitise, make the power sector more efficient and guarantee regular electricity supply.

A section of NANS led by Akinteye Afeez, in a statement, had called for the removal of Adelabu and Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Ltd (NNPCL), over alleged mismanagement and mishandling of vital energy resources, plunging the nation into turmoil.

He said the call for removal of Adelabu and Kyari “is misguided at this crucial time when both are providing solutions and keeping Nigerians updated about their vision for sustainable growth in both sectors critical to the development of the country.”

Ekundina said “The statement in question targets two crucial aspects of our nation’s development: the hike in petrol price and electricity instability.

Call to sack Power Minister, mere blackmail, propaganda – NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has described calls to sack Minister of Power Chief Adebayo Adelabu as mere blackmail and propaganda to tarnish his image.

NANS said the purported call to remove Adelabu was to discredit the Minister, who is working assiduously on the mandate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sanitise the power sector more efficient and guarantee regular electricity supply.

A section of NANS led by Akinteye Afeez in a statement called for immediate removal of Adelabu and Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) over mismanagement and mishandling of vital energy resources, plunging the nation into turmoil.

But a statement by NANS Senate President, Sen. Ekundina Segun Elvis called for arrest of Afeez, whom he described as an impostor.

He said the calls for removal of Adelabu and Mele Kyari at misguided when both are consistently providing solutions and keeping Nigerians updated about their vision for sustainable growth in both sectors critical to the development of the country.

Ekundina said: “The press release in question targets two crucial aspects of our nation’s development: the hike in petrol price and electricity instability.

“It is interesting to note that the attack is directed solely at the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) regarding the petrol price hike, while the Ministers of State for Petroleum Resources, who oversees both oil and gas, is conspicuously ignored.

“This biased approach clearly suggests a hidden agenda and raises questions about the true motives behind this press release.

“Turning to the issue of electricity, it is disheartening to see the Honorable Minister of Power being attacked unjustly. Chief Bayo Adelabu has taken the time to address the nation on multiple occasions, explaining in great detail the complexities surrounding the instability of electricity in our country.

“He has outlined the steps being taken to resolve these issues, including the stages of implementation, debt repayment, and addressing the existing gaps.

“His explanations have been comprehensive, offering hope that the electricity situation will improve in due course.

“It is evident that this press release is sponsored by the opposition and individuals seeking to tarnish the image of Chief Bayo Adelabu. The history of the self-acclaimed NANS leader, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, known for attacking personalities for financial gains, raises serious concerns about the credibility and authenticity of this press release.

“A typical example was his self demeaning and blackmail press he released to attack the DG of the National Orientation Agency (NOA). It is clear that the intention here is not to address the issues at hand but to damage the reputation of the Honorable Minister and his contributions to the development of our nation and the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR.

“We issue a stern warning to the writer of this attacking press release and their co-sponsors. While the self-acclaimed NANS leader’s studentship is subject to investigation, we call upon the public to stand against misinformation and propaganda. We urge the security agencies to be vigilant and prevent any illegal gatherings disguised as protests, as they are undoubtedly sponsored by the opposition to disrupt the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR.

“We also call upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to be aware of these miscreants who falsely claim to be student leaders. Their sole objective is to attack and destroy the Renewed Hope Agenda of his administration. However, we want to assure the public, the student community, and the youth that we are closely monitoring these developments.

“We firmly believe that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR will succeed in his endeavors, and no amount of propaganda will derail the progress we are making as a nation.

“This press release is nothing more than a funded propaganda campaign aimed at defaming Chief Bayo Adelabu, the Honorable Minister of Power. We have exposed the hidden motives and called for action against those responsible for disseminating such misleading information.

“We remain committed to ensuring the truth prevails and that the Nigerian people are not swayed by baseless attacks.”

NANS to Fed Govt: establish Price Control Board

    By Korede Omololu-David, UNIOSUN

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the Federal Government to establish a Price Control Board to regulate prices of commodities.

A statement by immediate-past Coordinator of NANS Southwest and current media to aide to NANS Senate President,  Comr. Adejuwon Olatunji Emmanuel, noted that the hike in prices of goods and services had become a huge burden on students.

He said the  board would not only stop  hoarding of goods, but ensure fairness and transparency in the  marketplace and foster an environment where every Nigerian can afford the basic necessities of life.

The statement reads: “The implementation of price control measures is not just a matter of economic policy; it is a moral imperative. We cannot stand idly by while our fellow citizens suffer under the weight of inflated prices and economic uncertainty. By taking decisive action to establish a Price Control Board, the government can demonstrate its commitment to the welfare of its citizens and pave the way for a more just and equitable society.

“This disconcerting reality points to a deeper issue: a lack of oversight in regulating prices within our local markets. It is evident that without proper mechanisms in place to control prices, consumers are left vulnerable to exploitation by unscrupulous traders, and the most vulnerable among us bear the brunt of these injustices.

“But let us not forget the role we all play in shaping our economic reality. As individuals and members of the business community, we must uphold ethical standards and refrain from engaging in practices that exacerbate the plight of our fellow Nigerians. Only through collective responsibility and a shared commitment to fairness can we truly address the root causes of our economic challenges.

“As concerned Nigerian students, we are not merely bystanders in this predicament; we are advocates for change. We fervently call upon the government to establish a Price Control Board tasked with the responsibility of regulating prices, preventing hoarding of goods, and shielding consumers from exorbitant prices. Such a board would serve as a beacon of hope, ensuring fairness and transparency in our marketplace and fostering an environment where every Nigerian can afford the basic necessities of life.”

NANS slams Sowore’s ‘useless’ remark, demands apology

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned remarks by former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (ADC) Omoyele Sowore describing the student body as “officially useless”.

A statement by NANS Senate President Comr. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez demanded retraction of the “disparaging remark” and an apology.

It vehemently rejected such “derogatory remarks”  aimed at an association  that has tirelessly advocated for students’  rights and welfare and  have been instrumental to addressing issues such as inadequate funding for education, poor infrastructure in schools, and the overall improvement of the nation’s educational system.

The student body demanded that Sowore retract his statement and offer a public apology to NANS or risk the wrath of students.

The statement reads in part:”It  is disheartening to see a former student leader, who once understood the struggles and aspirations of Nigerian students, make such disparaging comments about an organisation that has been at the forefront of fighting for their rights. Sowore’s words not only undermine the hard work and dedication of NANS but also disregard the significant impact the organisation has had on the lives of students across the country.

“As a former student leader himself, Sowore should understand the power of unity and collective action among Nigerian students. Failure to retract his statement will not be taken lightly, and he will face the full wrath of Nigerian students who are prepared to defend the integrity of NANS and the rights of all students.

“As stakeholders in the educational sector, we vehemently reject such derogatory remarks aimed at an organisation that has tirelessly advocated for their rights and welfare. We have been instrumental in addressing issues such as inadequate funding for education, poor infrastructure in schools, and the overall improvement of the educational system in Nigeria.

“Sowore  should retract his statement and offer a public apology to NANS and the entire student body.  Sowore should understand the power of unity and collective action among Nigerian students. Failure to retract his statement will not be taken lightly, and he will face the full wrath of Nigerian students who are prepared to defend the integrity of NANS and the rights of all students.

It is time for him  to recognise the importance of constructive dialogue and collaboration in addressing the challenges facing the Nigerian educational system. Rather than resorting to divisive rhetoric, we call on him to join hands with NANS and other stakeholders to work towards sustainable solutions that will benefit all Nigerian students.”

Benin varsities: NANS urges students to disregard fake accreditation list

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged students and other stakeholders to disregard a  list addressed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, detailing accredited public and private universities in Benin Republic.

A statement by NANS Senate President Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez noted that the purported list has been circulating on social media.

He noted that the dissemination of false information regarding university accreditation not only undermines the integrity of Nigeria’s education system but also causes unnecessary distress to stakeholders.

Afeez called on  the Ministry of Education to take swift action to address this issue and provide accurate information to the public.

“The spread of misinformation regarding university accreditation is a serious issue that demands immediate attention from the Ministry of Education.

“Clear communication and decisive action are essential to restore trust and ensure that stakeholders have access to accurate and reliable information. Let us work together to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s education system and alleviate the concerns of students, parents, and educational institutions.

“Furthermore, delays in accreditation processes have exacerbated concerns among students awaiting mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

“The dissemination of false information only serves to prolong their wait and adds to their frustrations. Urgent action is needed from the Ministry of Education to expedite investigations into the matter and provide a comprehensive report promptly. This will enable eligible students to proceed with their NYSC registration without further delay.

“The  Ministry of Higher Education in Benin has denounced the fake list with a disclaimer, asserting that the full list of accredited universities is available on their website. They have also stated that those responsible for creating the fake list will be brought to book,” the statement said.

The leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued seven-day ultimatum to Governor Ademola Adeleke over 100 per cent increase in school fees in state-owned schools.

NANS through its Chairman in Osun State, Ogungbe Taiwo, addressing reporters yesterday, said after a crucial meeting held at the Federal Polytechnic Ede, “we discovered that Osun State Government is making empty promises to students over our welfare.”

He said: “Governor Adeleke failed to prioritise the welfare of the students and include us in his government. We demand reversal of increased fees of state-owned institutions. The government has increased fees by over 100 per cent. The state also failed to give us palliative outside what the Federal Government gave us.”

Efforts to get reaction from the state government were not successful, as Information Commissioner Kolapo Alimi failed to respond to his calls and text messages sent to his mobile line.
