  • Strike: NANS wants ASUU to return to negotiation table with FG

    The National Associa-tion of Nigerian Students (NANS) wants the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to go back to negotiations with the federal government.

    The association reacting yesterday to a statement by ASUU threatening not to honour any further invitation for a meeting with the federal government said negotiation is desirable.

    “There is need for ASUU to continue its negotiations with the federal government to find a common ground to resolve issues that led to the union’s ongoing strike,” NANS National Public Relations Officer, Mr Bestman Okereafor, said in a statement in Enugu.

    He added: “We consider this decision as devilish and not in the best interest of Nigerian students. We wonder how the lingering disputes will be resolved if meetings are boycotted.

    “We are calling on the leadership of ASUU to reverse its decision and consider returning to the negotiation table.”

    The students’ umbrella body urged the lecturers to work towards resolving the dispute and suspend the strike before Jan. 1, 2019 in the interest of Nigerian students.

  • Budget presentation: NANS wants NASS to apologise to Nigerians

    The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) wants  members of the National Assembly to apologise to Nigerians for what it described as lawmakers’  unruly behaviour during President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2019 budget presentation .

    The Public Relations Officer of NANS, Mr Azeez Adeyemi, made the call yesterday  in Abeokuta.

    Adeyemi condemned the lawmakers’ behaviour, saying that it had further tarnished the external image of the country.

    He urged the lawmakers to always promote the integrity of the country, while according due respect to its leaders.

    He stressed that the legislators should jettison personal and political interests while treating matters of national interest.

    He said:”Nigerian students believe that members of the National Assembly should be role models to Nigerian youths and students by displaying worthy and enviable character.

    “It is important to place respect for the honour and integrity of our dear country above any personal or political interests.

    “We, hereby, call on the leadership of the National Assembly to, as a matter of necessity, apologise to the entire people of Nigeria over the members’ unruly conduct during the president’s budget presentation,” he said.

    The NANS spokesperson, nonetheless, urged the National Assembly members to scrutinise the 2019 appropriation bill before its passage so as to ensure the outcome was in the best interest of all Nigerians.

  • Fish out killers of Badeh, NANS tells security agencies

    The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), on Wednesday condemned the killing of the immediate past Air Chief Marshal, Alex Badeh, retired Chief of Defence Staff.

    The former Chief of Defence Staff, Badeh, a four-star General of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), was shot dead on Tuesday along Abuja-Keffi Road.

    The Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, confirmed Badeh’s assassination in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

    He said that that the former defence chief died from gunshot injuries sustained when his vehicle was attacked on Abuja-Keffi Road while returning from his farm.

    NANS’ National Public Relations Officer, Mr Bestman Okereafor, in a statement in Enugu, urged security agents to ensure that the perpetrators of “this evil are brought to book without delay.“

    “The attention of the apex students governing body, NANS, has been drawn to the gruesome assassination of Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, a retired four-star flag officer of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

    “NANS, in all totality, condemns the killing and considers this as very unfortunate, disheartening and one that has no doubt once again portrays our beloved country in a negative way and manner in the committee of nations.

    “If a former Chief of Defence Staff can be assassinated in such a manner in a democratic rule, what then is the fate of common defenceless Nigerians?

    “NANS is calling on security agents across the country to step up security measures as the Yuletide draws nearer, and specifically ahead of the 2019 General Elections,’’ he said.

    He said the association was not unaware of the Federal Government’s efforts to tackle insecurity in the country even though it was being frustrated by some political gladiators.

    “On this sad note, NANS is bidding the former Chief of Defence Staff farewell.

    “May God grant the Badeh family, government of Adamawa and the Nigerian Air Force the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss, we pray that his gentle and rugged soul rest in peace, Amen.’’

    NAN recalls that the late retired four-star General and flag officer of the Nigerian Air Force was the 18th Chief of Air Staff from Oct. 4, 2012 to Jan. 16, 2014; and the 15th Chief of Defence Staff from Jan. 16, 2014 to July 13, 2015.

  • NANS condemns ‘attempt to truncate democracy’ at A/Ibom assembly

    The Senate of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned what it considered as an attempt to truncate democracy in the State House of Assembly in Akwa Ibom State following the recent leadership saga.

    The Senate President NANS Comrade Abdulmajeed Oladimeji Oyeniyi at a World Press Conference addressed in Kaduna said, “We are in receipt of credible intelligence highlight plan by the opposition to use thugs to invade the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and prevent the House from carrying out its legislative business of law making.

    “It is important we call on the attention of the entire world to this undemocratic act that is about to be perpetrated by the opposition in Akwa lbom State”.

    The student body stressed that the State Legislative arm is an independent arm that do not require the intervention of external body and alleged that, “we are pretty sure that the target is not directly on the Speaker but the person of the Governor, such that if the opposition succeed by taking over the state Assembly, it will be very easy for them to impeach the Governor.

    “Nigerian Student wish to categorically state that the era of truncating democracy or the people’s will has for long gone and our Democratic systems have come to stay, we hereby advice the opposition to desist from this act of un-patriotism to our democracy, her citizen and the country at large.

    “The leadership of Nigerian Student wish to remind the general public that the Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assemble was once a Senator of NANS and the Speaker to Nigerian Youth Parliament, therefore any attempt to stampede his activities as the Speaker of Akwa lbom State House of Assembly, the Students’ Community and Youth leaders across the country will not hesitate to invade the state capital”.

    The student body also called on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency address issues raised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) with the view to bringing the ongoing stike to an end.

  • NANS declares support for Sanwo-Olu

    The Lagos State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) has declared support for the governorship candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC), Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, citing his performance in public service as reason for the endorsement.

    Hundreds of students and their unions’ leaders from the 10 higher institutions in the state gathered at Maryland Comprehensive Secondary in Onigbongo LCDA for a walk, to mark the International Students’ Day, an annual event scheduled for November 17 of every year by the United Nations (UN).

    From Maryland, the students headed on foot to the Sanwo-Olu Campaign Organisation office at GRA Ikeja, in a procession led by the outgoing chairman of the association, Moses Adewale and the incoming chairman, Qoyum Busari.

    They were received by chieftains of the party led by Director of Monitoring, Babajide Sanwo-Olu Independent Campaign Group, Abiodun Mafe.

    According to the student leader, Adewale, “We, as students have more than a passing interest in 2019 election, particularly as regards Lagos State. As progressives, we want square peg in square hole and have weighed each party governorship candidate in the balance. We came to the conclusion that the best man for the job is the candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, given his impressive scholarship and experience in public service.”

    If elected, Adewale charged Sanwo-Olu to constitute a Student Affairs Committee, that would be saddled with the responsibility of liaising between his government and students, adding that this would foster healthy relationship between them.

    Responding, Mafe said the APC governorship candidate is committed to the welfare and building capacity of youths of Lagos State.

  • NANS lauds PRO, Police Command over international award

    The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has lauded DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ogun for the recent international award and recognition as “Best Police PRO in Nigeria.’’

    The award was presented recently at the 15th Conference of Security Watch Africa held on Nov. 15 in Banjul, Gambia.

    NANS National Public Relations Officer, Mr Bestman Okereafor, made the commendation in a statement on Monday in Enugu.

    According to Okereafor, NANS joins lovers of security in congratulating a hardworking and dedicated Police Public Relations Officer, Ogun, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi.

    “This award is a victory to us all who are looking forward for a reformed and effective Nigeria Police.

    “We say big congratulations to Nigeria Police, Ogun Command under the leadership of Mr Ahmed Iliyasu and the command’s Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC).

    According to NANS, the great achievement had been made possible through collective efforts.

    “NANS is imploring Nigerians,specifically residents of Ogun to remain peaceful as well as steadfast in dissemination of information to the police and other security agencies.’’

  • NANS: Fayemi has restored Ekiti glory with free education

    The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) at the weekend hailed Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi for restoring free education in the state.

    In a statement in Abuja, the nation’s capital, after its national executive meeting, NANS Senate President Muhammad Gambo hailed Dr. Fayemi for restoring the glory of the state, known for quality education and Omoluabi (thoroughbred) ethos.

    He said the governor, within a fortnight in office, had removed illegal levies and pronounced free education from primary to secondary school.

    “Within two weeks of assuming office, the governor has removed illegal levies, pronounced free education from primary to secondary school, reinstated students, released funds for accreditation and setting up of visitation panel. These are highly commendable,” the statement said.

    Gambo urged the governor to consider popular and acceptable candidates ahead of next year’s general elections.

    The NANS chief urged Dr Fayemi not to overlook the interest of the people in choosing candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    According to him, only popular and acceptable candidates can win elections in a free and fair contest.

    Gambo said NANS would only support popular and acceptable candidates presented by the APC in the state.

    He added: “We want to remind Dr Fayemi that his victory was based on acceptability and popularity, hence the need to tread on this path so that his administration can have the best people in positions to complement his developmental agenda.

  • Osun 2018: NANS urges students to shun violence

    The National Association of Nigerian Students ( NANS ), has urged students in Osun to shun violence during and after the Governorship election on Saturday.

    Mr Azeez Adeyemi, the National Public Relations Officer for the association, gave the advice in a statement in Abeokuta on Friday.

    Adeyemi stated that Nigerian students remained agents of positive and progressive change, adding that they would continue to defend the nation democracy.

    “It is important to note that Nigerian students remain the most astute, sensitive and organised body in the country.

    “As such, the leadership of NANS implores Nigerian students in Osun eligible to vote to do so with the high level of modesty and comportment.

    “It is our collective responsibility to secure our votes, protect the integrity of our dear country and put our democracy on a first class standing.

    “NANS will not tolerate any attempt by any group of persons to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the election,” he said.

  • NANS condemns attack

    The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) yesterday condemned the attack in Plateau State by suspected herdsmen which left more than 80 people dead.

    In a statement in Enugu, the association condoled with the affected families, government and people of Plateau and urged the Federal Government to urgently address the issue of killings in the country.

    The National Public Relations Officer of the association, Mr Bestman Okoroafor, said:  “With great sadness, the leadership of NANS joins the world and fellow Nigerians in condemning the gruesome murder in some states of the federation, especially the most recent killings in Plateau by suspected herdsmen.

    The association, however, expressed concern that such killing had continued in spite of its repeated appeals to end the problem.

    “NANS is appealing to Mr President to stand by his promise of protecting human rights and fighting human rights abuses, “ Okoroafaor said.

    According to him, NANS is not unaware of President Muhammadu Buhari’s claim that desperate politicians are responsible for the killings.

    The association called on politicians to shun politics of bloodshed, adding that ‘’we remain one big and happy family in Nigeria.’’
