UCL: Things to know as Man City take on Napoli at Etihad

Manchester City will kick off their 2025/26 UEFA Champions League campaign with a blockbuster home tie against Serie A champions Napoli on Thursday night, a clash that promises fireworks, subplots, and elite football.

One of the biggest storylines of the night will be the emotional return of Kevin De Bruyne to the Etihad, now wearing Napoli colours after a sensational move to Italy during the summer. After spending nearly a decade at City and helping them to multiple domestic and European titles, the Belgian playmaker is expected to be a central figure both on and off the ball.

    What’s at Stake

For both clubs, a strong start to the new Champions League format — now a League Phase — is vital. While City enter the competition as perennial contenders under Pep Guardiola, Napoli, now managed by Antonio Conte, aim to go further than their recent quarterfinal showings and make a deeper European run.

City will look to assert their home dominance at the Etihad, where they are unbeaten in European competition for the past four seasons. Napoli, however, have shown early signs of promise in Serie A, winning their opening three games with a dynamic attack and tactical rigidity under Conte.

    Form Guide

Manchester City: Mixed results in the early Premier League fixtures. Solid at home but have shown defensive gaps.

Napoli: Strong Serie A start with convincing wins over Sassuolo, Cagliari, and Fiorentina. New signings De Bruyne and Rasmus Højlund have already made an impact, with the latter scoring on debut.

    Head-to-Head Record

The two sides have faced off four times previously in the Champions League:

    Man City wins: 2

    Napoli wins: 1

    Draws: 1

Their last encounter saw City edge a high-scoring battle, and goals have always been a feature when these two meet.

    Team News

    Manchester City:

Expected to field a near full-strength squad.

Erling Haaland is on the verge of hitting 50 Champions League goals, which would make him the fastest player in history to do so.

    Napoli

Romelu Lukaku (injury) and Amir Rrahmani are ruled out.

Kevin De Bruyne fit and expected to start.

Conte will rely on his disciplined defensive structure and sharp transitions to contain City’s attacking overload.

    Key Players to Watch

Erling Haaland (City): Already in goal-scoring form and thrives on European nights.

Kevin De Bruyne (Napoli): Facing his former club, he’ll be eager to impress and orchestrate Napoli’s forward play.

    Tactical Outlook

Expect City to dominate possession and dictate the tempo, with Guardiola’s side pressing high and looking to unlock Napoli’s backline through quick interplays. Napoli, under Conte, will sit deeper, stay compact, and seek to exploit spaces left behind through rapid counters led by De Bruyne and Højlund.

Despite Napoli’s resurgence, Manchester City’s European pedigree and home advantage could prove too strong. However, with the De Bruyne storyline and Napoli’s attacking form, this fixture could be far more competitive than expected.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 PM (UK time)  at the Etihad Stadium.

De Bruyne completes Napoli move after Man City exit

Kevin de Bruyne has completed his move to Napoli after the Belgian midfielder left Manchester City at the end of the Premier League season.

De Bruyne will link up with former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Antonio Conte, who is head coach of the Italian champions.

In moving to Italy on a free transfer, De Bruyne rejected an offer from Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire, and the switch means he can play in the Champions League next season.

Napoli clinch fourth Serie A title

Napoli secured their second Serie A title in three years with a 2-0 home win over Cagliari on Friday, edging out Inter Milan by a single point in a nail-biting conclusion to the season.

The victory not only marked Napoli’s fourth Italian championship overall but also a historic achievement for head coach Antonio Conte. The 55-year-old Italian became the first manager to win the Serie A title with three different clubs, having previously triumphed with Juventus and Inter Milan, News.Az reports.

Heading into the final matchday, Napoli held a slender one-point lead over defending champions Inter. Early signs suggested the title might return to Milan, as Inter took the lead against Como in the 20th minute. However, Napoli regained control when Scott McTominay volleyed in the opener in the 42nd minute.

Romelu Lukaku doubled the lead shortly after halftime, sparking celebrations at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona—the same venue named after the legendary player who guided Napoli to their first two league titles in 1987 and 1990.

Although Inter went on to beat a 10-man Como side 2-0, it wasn’t enough, as Napoli clinched the Scudetto by just one point.

The win marks a remarkable turnaround for the club, which had slumped to 10th place last season. Under Conte’s leadership, Napoli are once again at the pinnacle of Italian football, just two years after their 2023 title triumph led by Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Napoli eye title glory in Serie A finale tonight

Napoli are on the brink of claiming their second Serie A title in three seasons as they head into the final weekend of the campaign leading Scudetto rivals Inter Milan by a single point.

Antonio Conte’s team host Cagliari in front of what will be a packed Stadio Diego Armando Maradona tonight, at the same time as Inter kick off at in-form Como.

Last weekend’s dramatic goalless draw at Parma has left Napoli needing to match or better Inter’s result at Como in order to secure a fourth league crown.

After that Conte’s future at Napoli is still in doubt with Italian media widely reporting that he will return to Juventus, where he spent the majority of his trophy-packed playing career and won three league titles as coach.

“Winning the Scudetto would repay all of the effort that I’ve put in this season. I know that I’m very tired and that I’m just about OK to get to the end of the season,” said Conte after Sunday’s stalemate.

Neither Conte nor his Inter counterpart Simone Inzaghi will be in their respective dugouts tonight  after both were sent off in a tempestuous penultimate round of matches which ended with Napoli and Inter drawing.

Inzaghi was enraged at the penalty from which Lazio’s Pedro equalised for the second time on Sunday, a 90th-minute spot-kick netted following a Yann Bisseck handball which so angered Inter that no one spoke to media after the 2-2 draw at the San Siro.

Meanwhile Conte nearly came to blows with a Parma’s assistant manager Antonio Gagliardi, Conte’s match analyst with the Italian national team a decade ago, in the final moments at Parma, just as Napoli fans were celebrating Pedro’s spot-kick.

Former Spain international Pedro became an instant hero in Naples as the 37-year-old’s 14th  goal of the season kept Napoli top of the division heading into the final weekend.

Napoli and Inter’s matches have been scheduled for tonight  to give Inter adequate time to prepare for the Champions League final on May 31, even in the unlikely event that the two teams finish level on points and leave the title to be decided by a play-off on Monday.

The threat of a play-off has complicated the season finale, in particular for Inter whose showdown with Paris Saint-Germain in Munich is now the priority with their league title defence as good as over.

An eventual play-off had originally been scheduled for next week but that is now untenable for Inter and for Serie A, a league which hasn’t had a European champion since Jose Mourinho guided the Milan giants to the treble 15 years ago.

The league had earmarked Thursday as the new date for Napoli and Inter’s matches so that a play-off could be scheduled for the weekend, but Napoli and broadcaster DAZN were reportedly against the idea and that led to the choice of Friday for their final league matches and Monday for any play-off.

However for a play-off to happen Napoli would have to lose on Friday, unlikely against a team with nothing to play for, and Inter draw at Como.

Inter have the harder task on Friday as Como have taken 20 points from their last eight fixtures and are on course to finish 10th , their highest placing since ninth – albeit in a 16-team league – in 1986.

Juventus need one more win to hold off Roma and Lazio and secure the fourth and final Champions League spot. Igor Tudor’s team head on Sunday to Venezia who are 19th and one of five teams battling against relegation on the final day.

    SERIE FINAL DAY FIXTURES:

Friday: Como v Inter Milan, Napoli v Cagliari

Saturday: Bologna v Genoa;  AC Milan v Monza

Sunday: Atalanta v Parma; Empoli v Verona; Lazio v Lecce; Torino v Roma; Udinese v Fiorentina; Venezia v Juventus

Serie A champions to be decided Friday

Inter Milan and Napoli will play their final Serie A games of the season on Friday instead of Sunday, according to the Italian league.

The Lega Serie A council decided Napoli’s home game against Cagliari and Inter’s away match against Como will kick off simultaneously at 2045 CEST (1845 GMT).

Antonio Conte’s Napoli are top of the league standings on 79 points, one ahead of defending champions Inter going into the final matchday. Should the two sides end level on points, a playoff will be required to determine the title winner.

The potential playoff could be played on May 26, leaving time for Inter to prepare the Champions League final on May 31. Six remaining matches will be played on Sunday, deciding the European places and relegation.

Conte rues Napoli’s missed chances  against  Venezia

Napoli should have been more clinical in front of goal when they were held to a 0-0 draw at relegation-threatened Venezia in Serie A on Saturday, manager Antonio Conte said, adding that he was still satisfied with his side’s performance.

The draw left Napoli in second place with 61 points from 29 matches — level with leaders Inter Milan and three points ahead of third-placed Atalanta, who face each other later on Sunday.

Napoli had 15 shots but Venezia’s defence were up to the task and were aided by an excellent performance from goalkeeper Ionut Radu, whose seven saves earned the hosts a valuable point.

Venezia also had a chance to steal a winner late in added time but were unable to cap off a sweeping counter-attack with a goal.

“I am satisfied with the performance, then we wanted to win it. The positive aspect is that we created a lot, the negative is that we didn’t convert them,” Conte told reporters.

“The thing that bothered me was the six versus two counter-attack at the end — that must never happen. We switched off our brains at that moment and it must never happen.

“We had to be more incisive, the one who scores goals wins. There are nine games to go, we’ll try to be a nuisance until the end, fighting tooth and nail.”

Napoli next host AC Milan on March 30, after the international break which Conte said would afford his exhausted squad vital respite.

“We only have half a team left. We’ll use the break to continue working, perhaps organising a few friendlies for those who arrived in January so they can get into better context and condition,” he added.

“We will certainly complete the recovery of (winger) David Neres. Hopefully those who go to the national team will come back safe and sound.”

Conte said defender Amir Rrahmani, who was substituted in the 77th  minute with an apparent thigh injury, did not have a major issue, adding: “He told me he was tired, we’ll evaluate. It could be a contracture.”

Titanic as Napoli clash with Lookman’s Atalanta in Serie A  showdown

The battle for the Serie A title brings two of the three main contenders face-to-face this weekend when leaders Napoli play Atalanta complete with reigning African Footballer of the Year Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman, topping the bill over AC Milan’s trip to Juventus.

It is not often that a Juventus and Milan clash gets overshadowed, but with both sides already out of the Scudetto running, their meeting tomorrow will play second fiddle to events in Bergamo later the same evening.

Atalanta’s 11-game winning streak may have come to an end, with three consecutive draws slowing their pace, but they are still very much in the title hunt, in third place and four points off top spot.

Defeat at home to Napoli would leave Atalanta with a lot of ground to make up, but they will have been boosted by coming from behind to claim a 1-1 draw with Juventus on Tuesday to stretch their unbeaten league run to 15 games.

Napoli lost top spot after defeat to Lazio in December, but five wins on the bounce has brought Antonio Conte’s side back to the summit.

The imminent departure of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, set to join Paris St Germain, will be seen by many as a huge body blow to their title chances, but Napoli have not suffered when without the Georgian winger.

Kvaratskhelia missed three of those last five games with injury, but Napoli have marched on regardless, while David Neres has begun to prove his worth to the manager.

The Brazilian winger, who arrived in August, was reduced to mere cameo appearances for much of the season, with Conte unwilling to play both Neres and Kvaratskhelia in his front three.

Neres has now well and truly broken into the side, starting the last five games, and while Kvaratskhelia was a massive part of Napoli’s Scudetto win two seasons ago, Conte will feel this team is now strong enough to survive his loss.

Napoli travel to Bergamo aiming to avenge their 3-0 defeat to Atalanta earlier this season, but another loss could see the scales tip in Inter Milan’s favour.

Inter are still favourites to retain their crown, but after six straight wins, Simone Inzaghi’s side drew 2-2 with Bologna on Wednesday and sit three points behind Napoli with a game less played, and they host Empoli on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Juventus remain the only unbeaten side in Serie A, but drawing 13 of 20 games is just not title contender form, and Thiago Motta’s side are fifth, 13 points off Napoli

  • Osimhen dares Napoli on Galatasaray future

Osimhen dares Napoli on Galatasaray future

Nigeria international striker  Victor  Osimhen  has reportedly said  he would be  the one to determine his own future amid  transfer  rumours  away  from Galatasaray.

Napoli president Aurelio di Laurentiis has been quoted as saying that  he will be open for Osimhen to join Serie A rivals AC Milan in exchange for Rafael Leao and should Kvaratskhelia quit.

But  Osimhen has said  that  he would be  the one to decide where he plays after Galatasaray.

“I decide on my future, I don’t want others to decide,” he said firmly .“I feel happy when I remember how the Galatasaray fans welcomed me. I couldn’t be happier in a better place than here. My aim is to finish this year here.”

Yet a football transfer expert  has suggested  only a big money deal can lure  away Osimhen  from  Galatasaray  in the upcoming  January Transfer Window.

Osimhen, who was linked with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain right up until the final week of the summer transfer window, ultimately did not make a move to either club.

Instead, the 25-year-old joined Galatasaray on loan, where he’s been showcasing his ability by scoring four goals and providing four assists in seven appearances across all competitions.

According to Turkish outlet Sozcu, Galatasaray is keen to make his stay permanent as the club is reportedly willing to pay £42 million to sign him on a full-time basis from Napoli.

But in his recent appearance on the PSG Talk Extra Time podcast, Football Transfer’s Robin Bairner spoke about whether he sees Osimhen leaving this upcoming January transfer window.

“He’s been in the Turkish news this week saying that he’s going to stay at Galatasaray [and] he’s spoken to fans and said he’s going to stay to the end of the season,” Bairner said. “But I think if a big offer came in from a PSG or a Chelsea or an Arsenal, any of the teams that were interested in him during the summer, I think it’s certainly something you would have to consider. But he does seem to be enjoying life in Turkey and there seems to be no urgency, I suppose, to leave at the moment. So it would have to be the right offer.”

Lukaku reveals secret behind transfer to Napoli

Lukaku snubbed a Belgium call-up for October games against Italy and France as he wanted to remain in Naples to continue training.

“I thought staying with my team and work was best for me,” the striker told TG1. “Last season, I didn’t do any pre-season preparation, and I paid for it.”

Lukaku reunited with his ex-Inter coach Antonio Conte at the Stadio Maradona, completing a permanent transfer from Chelsea.

“It’s important. I think everyone knows my relationship with him,” Lukaku said. “He knows my past and my family, which makes a big difference.”

A former striker for Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea in England, Lukaku has also played for Inter and Roma in Serie A.

“I played in the Premier League, but Serie A really is coming back,” he noted.

Napoli are the current Serie A leaders, but Lukaku urged his teammates to keep their feet on the ground.

“We must remain calm. It’s just the beginning,” he said.

  • Osimhen’s January move to Chelsea possible, says Napoli director

Osimhen’s January move to Chelsea possible, says Napoli director

Napoli director Mauro Meluso has said the club are open to selling Victor Osimhen to Premier League side Chelsea this January after a failed summer move.

The striker was strongly linked with a move to West London but the deal was never finalised and instead he made a last minute loan move to Galatasaray where he has two goals and three assists in four appearances.

Osimhen’s £109m release clause, which no club was willing to pay in the summer, is no longer active and it is reported that his price has since been cut to around £68m.

Reports from Corriere dello Sport state that the Nigerian forward is still adamant on joining the Blues.

Meluso spoke on the striker’s move to Turkey and how a deal with Chelsea could be reached as the Italian club look to sell a player who is no longer part if their plans.

“It was a last-minute solution so he would not lose the first three months of the season,” Meluso said during the Palermo Football Conference. “We will see in January.”

The Napoli director added: “He no longer wanted to be part of the first-team.

“He had received an important offer even before I arrived at Napoli, but (Napoli chairman) Aurelio De Laurentiis didn’t consider it because he thought about the club’s good.

“He may have made wrong decisions but did them to keep Napoli competitive.”
