Weapons proliferation: Arms centre warns imposters

The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) has warned individuals and groups misusing its name for fraudulent or unauthorized activities.

It said such actions constitute a serious offence and would be prosecuted accordingly.

The Director-General of NCCSALW, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Johnson Babatunde Kokumo, issued the warning when he visited the Centre’s North West Zonal Office in Kaduna.

The visit was part of a familiarization tour of all NCCSALW Zonal Offices, aiming to assess operations, strengthen stakeholder collaboration, and personally acquaint with office locations, personnel, and activities.

He noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent approval of the Centre’s Bill has provided the Centre with the necessary legal framework to effectively execute its mandate.

Kokumo reaffirmed the Centre’s dedication to controlling small arms and light weapons across the country, emphasizing the direct link between insecurity and arms proliferation.

The DG reiterated the importance of synergy between the Centre and arms-bearing agencies, religious bodies, and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

While expressing gratitude to the Kaduna State Government for the provision of land for the construction of a permanent office for the North West Zone, Kokumo solicited continued collaboration from the State and other partners to achieve the Centre’s goal of ensuring peace and security across the region and the nation at large.

The Zonal Coordinator, Air Vice Marshal Haruna Umar Mohammed (rtd), while presenting the report of the zone said it had recently received some sized weapons from the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division in Sokoto.
