  • ABU students win programming contest

Students of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria have won the 7th Nigeria Universities Computer Programming Contest (NUCPC) organised by National Mathematical Centre (NMC).

They beat 16 teams from both public and private universities in Nigeria to the gold prize.

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) came second while Ebonyi State University (EBSU) came third in the annual competition.

Coordinator of the Computer Science Programme at NMC, Dr Jennifer Bamidele, revealed that the competition is aimed at sharpening the programming skills of students and to improve their knowledge of science and technology.

She said: “There was a pertinent need to revive NUCPC because Nigeria is losing out both on the regional and international levels. Our students in computer science all over the institutions of the federation also need an avenue to perfect their programming skills and the applications of such to everyday life.”

She said this year’s edition was interesting because of the introduction of some presentations before and in-between the contest.

Bamidele urged the winners to go back and work hard to retain the trophy next year.

Chief Executive Officer, NMC, Prof Stephen Onah, said the competition was organised to catch students young and expose them to areas that are similar in a competitive manner.

Represented by Prof Fumilayo Saporu, Onah urged the students who participated in the competition to apply the knowledge gathered when they get back to their various universities.

Nuhu Ibrahim, a 400-Level student of Computer Science, who spoke on behalf of ABU team,   expressed joy at the feat.

“It came with a lot of practice.  We have been told long ago that this is what is coming up and we have been working together.  It is not about a single person’s effort; it is team work,” he said.

Other winners include Covenant University (fourth), University of Ibadan (fifth), Federal University Lokoja (sixth), Ambrose Alli University (seventh) and Federal university of Technology, Owerri (eighth).

  • Centre decries low turnout of lecturers in Mathematics retraining workshop

The National Mathematical Centre ( NMC ) has decried low turnout of participants in its retraining workshop organised for heads of mathematics departments and lecturers of Mathematics in Colleges of Education.

Dr. Steve Oluwaniyi, Acting Coordinator, Mathematical Sciences Education Programme of the centre, disclosed this in an interview in Abuja.

Oluwaniyi said that the retraining programme targeted an average of 100 participants to ensure effective teaching and learning of the subject in various schools across the country.

According to him, it has become necessary to retrain stakeholders in the field of mathematics education considering the students’ frequent poor performance in the subject.

He said only few participants turned out for the event and those, who attended were properly informed on ways to improve the learning and teaching of mathematics in the country.

He further encouraged the participants to help in propagating the need for all the intended targets of the programme to be part of the exercise and ensure effective implementation of what they learnt.

Oluwaniyi also said that the managements of the colleges of education should try as much as possible to encourage concerned members’ staff to be part of the programme in the centre.

He, however, noted that the programme which started on May 14 and ended May 19 was necessary to ensure quality foundation for lecturers of would-be teachers in the colleges of education.

“This is because the trained teachers in the colleges of education are the ones, who go into the classroom to teach students at the basic level,’’ Oluwaniyi remarked.

He said that the centre through the present administration of the centre was trying to bring back programmes that had been going on in the centre for long.

The coordinator also said there would be another retraining workshop for heads of mathematics departments and lecturers of mathematics in colleges of education across the country August this year.

To top it all, the winner of the junior category of the competition, Iyoha Omonzokpia of Loyola Jesuit College, Gidan Mangoro, Abuja, was offered a scholarship worth N3 million for his senior secondary education at the NMC International Model Science Academy, Abuja.

A deputy director at the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, and International Coordinator, Mathematics Competition, Dr Abbas Adedibu, also said the top four winners in both categories will represent Nigeria at the World Mathematics Competition holding in South Korea and Beijing, China this year.

On its part, Promasidor, sponsors of the competition, will be taking Iyoha and senior category winner, Akindele Oyedele, of Iganmode Grammar School, Ota, Ogun State, on an all expense paid holiday outside Nigeria.

This is in addition to cash prizes of N300,000 for Akindele, and N250,000 for Iyoha; five desktop computers and a printer each for their schools, and cash awards for their teachers.

Speaking at a welcome dinner on the night before the award, Richards said passing exams is not enough.

“Being a successful human is not about passing exams; it is about being a honest person; respecting integrity; being truthful. If you can combine your love for mathematics with integrity, honesty, transparency, I think I will be happy to visit you when you become the president,” he said.

In his speech at the ceremony, Richards added that Promasidor is very proud of the competition, particularly because it has achieved a malpractice-free record in its 13 years of existence.

“It might interest you to know that we have not had a leakage of NASSMAC question papers since inception and the participating schools completely trust our body of examiners who are responsible for grading the results. We are very proud of this feat and we pledge to sustain it,” he said.
