    ArmWrestling confirmed for 2026 National Para Games in Abuja

    The President of the Nigeria ArmWrestling Federation, Samuel Jackson, has confirmed that arm wrestling will officially feature at the 2026 National Para Games scheduled to take place in Abuja.

    Jackson described the development as a major milestone for the sport, especially for athletes with disabilities seeking more competitive platforms at the national level.

    According to the National Sports Commission, the National Para Games will be held in March 2026 and will involve athletes from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

     “We are happy to confirm that arm wrestling will be part of the 2026 National Para Games. This is a big step for the growth of the sport,” Jackson said.

    He explained that the inclusion reflects the steady progress Nigeria has made in arm wrestling and the growing recognition of the sport both locally and internationally.

     “Our athletes have shown significant improvement in recent years, and this platform will help us discover even more talent,” he added.

    Jackson noted that the Games will also serve as a vital scouting avenue for identifying athletes capable of representing Nigeria at continental and global competitions.

     “The Para Games will allow us to scout athletes from across the country and build a stronger national team,” he said.

    He emphasized the federation’s commitment to inclusivity, pointing out that arm wrestling offers opportunities for athletes regardless of physical limitations.

     “This sport gives everyone a chance, and that is why its inclusion in the Para Games is very important,” Jackson stated.

    The federation president revealed that preparations are already underway to ensure a well-organized and competitive event.

     “We are working closely with coaches and officials to ensure proper organization and fair competition,” he said.

    Jackson expressed confidence that the Games would help raise awareness and increase participation in arm wrestling nationwide.

     “When people see the opportunities available, more athletes will be encouraged to take up the sport,” he noted.

    He concluded by thanking the National Sports Commission for its support and reaffirmed the federation’s ambition to use the Games as a foundation for future success.

     “This is about building pathways for athletes and strengthening Nigeria’s presence in arm wrestling,” Jackson said.

    The resounding success of the 2nd edition of the National Para Games culminated in an exhilarating and grand closing ceremony at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

    The week-long celebration of talent, resilience, and sportsmanship concluded yesterday , leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of para sports in Nigeria.

    The Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, lauded the remarkable display of talent and dexterity exhibited by the para athletes throughout the Games. Expressing his delight, he commended the spirit of competition and the dedication of all participants.

    “The National Para Games have once again showcased the incredible abilities and unwavering spirit of our para athletes,” Senator Enoh said. “The level of talent and determination displayed by these athletes is truly inspiring. They embody the essence of sportsmanship and perseverance.”

    “Through sports, we celebrate unity, resilience, and determination. The National Para Games have proven to be a platform that not only showcases exceptional talent but also fosters inclusivity and breaks barriers.”

    From December 8th to 14th, the stadium played host to representatives from all 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The atmosphere was charged with excitement as athletes showcased their skills, determination, and unwavering spirit, captivating audiences and leaving spectators in awe.

    Bayelsa State emerged as the champions of the Games, winning 30 gold, 24 silver and 20 bronze medals. Abia, Kano Lagos, and Oyo states completed the top five in that order. Their athletes’ dedication and outstanding performances solidified their position at the pinnacle of para sports excellence.

    The closing ceremony was a spectacle of pomp and pageantry, featuring captivating performances, cultural displays, and heartfelt tributes to the athletes who epitomized perseverance and triumph over adversity.

    As the curtains drew to a close on this momentous occasion, the legacy of the National Para Games continues to inspire a new era of inclusivity, empowerment, and recognition for para athletes across Nigeria.
