    Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, others gear-up as national  polo tour heads north

    With the conclusion of the first stage of the season at the just concluded 2025 Ibadan polo festival, the glamorous national polo tour is moving to higher gears with Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, Yola and others preparing for their respective annual tournaments.

    The national polo frenzy that traditionally behold  the northern part of the country is already  catching fire in  Bauchi as preparations for the 2025 polo tournament gallops off from  July 21st -27th .

    A release from the Bauchi Polo Club confirmed the tournament date, adding that preparations for the prestigious sporting event that has for decades remained the biggest sports cum tourism driver in the home of foremost Yankari  Games Reserves,  is in full swing.

    Bauchi polo chieftains further disclosed that with over twenty teams from across the country expected to participate in the weeklong polo fiesta, the state government and sports-loving people of the ancient Kingdom are in a vibrant mood to celebrate one of their grandest festivals of the year.

    Checks also revealed that from the home of the Yankari Games Reserve, the polo tour is expected to head northwest to the

    ‘Home of Nigerian Polo’ for the 2025 Katsina International Polo Tournament slated for August 16 to 23 at the foremost Sir Usman Nagogo Polo Ground.

    Life President of Katsina, Prince Sanusi Kabir who disclosed this in Kaduna recently, assured, sponsors, players, dignitaries, tourists and polo enthusiasts a most exciting and memorable time during the event that traditionally hold under the auspices of the Emir of Katsina and Life Chairman of Nigerian polo, HRH Alhaji (Dr.) Abdulmumuni Kabir Usman.

    The highly-revered Nigerian Cup that celebrated its centenary with pomp last year, topped the prizes on offer during the eight days international polo fiesta that was inaugurated way back in the early 1920s.

    Other glittering prizes to be won at the polo festival include the General Hassan Usman Katsina Cup, played in memory of the legend who is the first African to be appointed a member of the world polo ruling authority, the Federation of International Polo (FIP).

    Muhammadu Dikko Cup, the President Cup, Governor’s Cup, Talba Cup, Wazirin Katsina Cup,  Muhammadu Dikko Memorial Cup, Talba Cup among others. Individual honours and awards are also on offer to be given out to players and individuals who would distinguish themselves during the fiesta.

    From Katsina the glamorous polo train is expected to make a short trip to the ancient Trans Saharan Trade Route, for the forthcoming Kano International Polo Tournament that has already sparked off a massive frenzy ahead of what promises to be an irresistible spectacular festival billed from the last week of September to the first week of October, 2025.

    Meanwhile, the second stage of the national tour would take the cream of Nigerian polo stars through Argungu, Yola, Kaduna, Keffi and Abuja, before making a splash in Jos for the year-ending winter polo festival from December 26  to January 2, 2026.

    As the tour lasted, the game of royalties and societal affluence is guaranteed to make some startling in-roads as one of the biggest corporate sports in the country, drawing new followers in their droves and adding a few new tournaments along the road.
