  • NAPS to Buhari, NASS: Scrap HND/BSC disparity

Polytechnic students have called on President Muhamnadu Buhari and the National Assembly to help resolve issues surrounding the dichotomy in HND/BSC.

The students under the umbrella bodies of National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) and the Coalition of Concerned HND holders (CCHH) said the disparity had been the motivation for several industry crisis in both public and private sectors.

NAPS’ National Vice President, Mr. Damola Olugbode, made the appeal in company of concerned HND holders at a news briefing in Abuja.

Olugbode noted that though the Bill seeking to stop the age long disparity had passed Second Reading in the House of Representatives, he called for the speedy passage of the Bill into law.

He said: “For many years we have been grossly marginalized and sidelined by the Federal Government especially the various ministers of education. The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) had at various times voiced out and protested about the treatment of HND graduates in all sectors of the Nigerian labour market, yet nothing has been done.

“Polytechnic education is now being regarded as vocational studies, as witnessed by several professional bodies that have refused to recognize HND, yet accredit the same courses of study at the Polytechnics. The HND/BSC dichotomy still survives this long due to poor implementation of policy statement.

“We therefore urge President Muhammad Buhari, the Federal Executive Council, National Assembly and the National Council on Establishment to champion millions of Nigerian youths who have been disenfranchised by this separatist policy.”

Acting President, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Mr. Abdulwahab Agboola, noted that the high level manpower in the country was being produced in Polytechnic every year.

According to him, Polytechnic graduates are now subjected to ridicule in their places of work because of the disparity.

He noted that the educational system had placed university in form of unitary system of education where universities are regarded as the peak of education and this was an abnormality to the system.

Agboola said the bane of corrupt practices was more in the academic institutions simply because “we do not give emphasis on technology know-how.”

  • Crisis rocks youth council in Anambra

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) is swimming in crisis in Anambra state, following the emergence of two factions in different election of officers.

One of the factions elected Comrade Nwosu Ifeanyi Stephen as its state chairman, while the second faction elected Nonso Smart Okafor as its chairman.

The youth council in Anambra state was allegedly balkanized about seven years ago by some agents of the state government after the expiration of the tenure of Comrade Nwabufo Nwankwo.

Since then, the state congress had not been held, as a result of the crisis that brought on Frank Maduka, as the leader of NYCN, which had kept the group in comatose.

However at the weekend, the council in different locations in Awka came together with some of their stakeholders, conducted factional elections with their delegates from the 21 local government areas in the state to elect those leaders of theirs.

Speaking with The Nation  after the election, the new chairman, Comrade Nwosu Ifeanyi Stephen, extended his hand of fellowship to others who were not successful during the election, adding “together we stand, together we will succeed, build the youth, build the nation”.

He said that he believed that the youth of Anambra state were now capable to reposition the youth meaningfully by engaging them in agricultural oriented programs, skills acquisition, sports, education empowerment and talent hunt that would go a long way to providing employment.

The other elected chairman Nonso Smart Okafor, thanked the youths of the state for giving him what he described as rare opportunity to serve them.

  • Nasarawa youths demand release of Peace Corps boss

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called for the release of the National Commandant, Peace Corps of Nigeria, Mr Dickson Akoh.

The Chairman of the council in Nasarawa State, Mr Mohammed Bako, made the appeal on Thursday at news conference in Lafia.

Bako criticised the recent attack on the headquarters of corps in by the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and Department of State Security (DSS).

He also condemned the subsequent arrest of the national commandant of the corps and other principal officers of the organisation by the security operatives.

“This ugly incident by the Nigeria police and DSS is coming on peak of the passing of the Bill of the Nigerian Peace Corps by the National Assembly. The bill is only awaiting presidential assent.

“Peace Corps is a Voluntary Youths Organisation (VYO-NGO) affiliated to the National Youth Council of Nigeria with the primary aims and objectives of training the teeming youths of Nigeria in civil education and duties, volunteerism and community service for the nation’s benefit.

“Instead of the police to seek for collaboration with the Peace Corps in bridging the gap of insecurity in the country, they instead engaged on this illegal action of closing the Peace Corps office and detaining their principal officers.

“This development is unprovoked, unwarranted and therefore illegal, and hence generating undue animosity between the Peace Corps, the police, DSS and therefore condemnable.

“It is in view of the above that the Youth Council in Nasarawa state is calling on well-meaning Nigerians and indeed the youths to appeal to Mr President, Muhammadu Buhari, to append his signature to the bill and finally put to rest this controversy,” he said.

According to him, the bill will go long way in enhancing peaceful co-existence, help in augmenting the efforts of security agencies as well as fight the high rate of unemployment and crime in the country, if signed into law, among other benefits.

Bako explained that the bill would avail employment opportunity to the army of unemployed youths across all states and local government areas of the federation been the change mantra of the present administration on job creation.

He called on its members in the state to be wary of a certain organisation called National Unity and Peace Corps, pointing out that it is not the same as the Peace Corps and it is not known to the council.

The state youth council chairman also called on Nigerians especially youths to live in peace; be law abiding, respect constituted authority, vigilant, responsible and productive in the support of genuine efforts towards nation building.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Akoh and other principal officers at the organisation headquarter in Abuja were arrested on Feb. 28, by a combined team of security operatives.

Akoh, who is facing trial on alleged conspiracy and extortion, was also accused of using unauthorised uniforms and training facilities.
