    UNILORIN promises NYG participants admission

    The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin ( UNILORIN ), Prof. Abdul Ganiyu Ambali, has promised admission to participants of the National Youth Games ( NYG ) who wish to enter the institution in the 2017/2018 academic session.

    According to the University’s bulletin on Tuesday, the ( UNILORIN ) VC who gave the assurance while addressing athletes at the just concluded 3rd NYG, said if they meet the participant would be offered admission once they meet the University requirements.

    The NYG was hosted by the University between Sept. 9 and Sept. 16, 2017 which was the second consecutive hosting.

    He described the games as an opportunity to give the youths the chance to showcase their potentials.

    “It is the responsibility of all of us to impact our youths positively, wherever we can,” Ambali added.

    Kano targets top three at youth games

    The Kano State Director of Sports, Malam Bashiru Ahmed, has said that the aim of the state is to surpass it’s previous performance at the Youth Games, holding in Ilorin.

    Ahmed told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Ilorin, that the state is participating in more individual events.

    “This year’s National Youth Games ( NYG ), Kano is featuring in 15 events and we hope to get medals in 12 events.

    “Last year, we had 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze and I’m sure we’ll improve this year.

    “The state’s target is between 1st to 3rd position.

    “We are participating in more individual sports like swimming, Karate, Taekwondo, Judo, Wrestling and I’m optimistic victory is ours” Ahmed said.

    He revealed that Eminike Emeka won a silver for the state in the Gymnastics event.

    “In the Vaulting Exercise of the boy’s gymnastics event, Eminike Emeka brought the state a silver and more is coming.” Ahmed added.

    Gymnastics: FCT trains 30 kids ahead of 3rd NYG

    The FCT Gymnastics Association is training over 30 kids ahead of the 3rd National Youth Games (NYG) holding in September in Ilorin, an official has said.

    The FCT Gymnastics Coach, Rose Verissimo, made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja after the kids’ morning training session.

    Verrissimo said that there would be a competition to select the best gymnasts to represent FCT at the Games holding from Sept. 7 to Sept. 17 in the University of Ilorin.

    “We have been in camp since Monday and so far, I am impressed with the kids because they have learnt very fast.

    “Due to lack of finance, we will be selecting four gymnasts comprising two male and two female for the closed camp prior to the Games.

    “This will be first time the FCT Gymnastics Association will be participating in the Games and we want to give it our best,’’ she said.

    Third National Youth Games to hold in Unilorin in September

    Sept. 7 and Sept. 17th have been approved as dates for the University of Ilorin (Unilorin) to host the third edition of the National Youth Games (NYG).

    According to the Unilorin Bulletin issued Monday in Ilorin, the dates’ approval as well as venue approval were as a result of the university’s successful hosting of the second edition.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the second edition was held in 2016, with the first edition held in 2013 at Abuja.

    The bulletin indicated that the 2017 edition of the Games is expected to provide the opportunities for the selection of athletes who will represent the country at the World Youth Games.

    The publication noted that a meeting was held between the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development and the management of University of Ilorin.

    “We will contribute something tangible as a legacy here”, it state,” the VC said

    NSC needs 1,100 additional beds for 6,459 contingent for NYG

    the National Sports Commission (NSC) on Wednesday said it needed 1,100 additional bed spaces to accommodate the 6,459 contingent for the forthcoming National Youth Games (NYG ).

    Alhassan Yakmut, the Director of Grassroots Sports and Development, at the commission, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that efforts were on to resolve the accommodation problem.

    According to him, 2,448 athletes will participate in the games besides the officials and they need an environment conducive for such a competition.

    “We need 4,500 bed spaces and so far we have 3,400 bed spaces at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Kubwa, and we are already collaborating with the authorities of the College of Education in Zuba. We are also negotiating on the use of 600 bed spaces at the Civil Defence Corps’ Training Centre in Sauka. “They have 248 bed spaces: 124 for male and 124 for female. And we are also negotiating for partnership with the management of the Women Development Centre where there are more than 100 bed spaces. All in all, we have identified our stakeholders that we will collaborate with. There will be inspection of facilities again to be sure of the exact facilities that are in packages A and B that will be used for the games.

    Yakmut said further that the transport committee and the committees in charge of security and medical had made their submissions as to what they needed to ensure a hitch-free competition. He said everything had been put in place to ensure that athletes moved with ease from their camps to the venue of the competition.

    “The percentage of preparation keeps increasing as the event approaches, but for now, we don’t have problems with the operational plan as we have already begun the implementation of the plan.”
