    NYSC DG tasks corps members to adopt entrepreneurship mentality

    Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, Director-General, National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ) has urged corps members to adopt entrepreneurship mentality to be self reliant after service and to attain financial independence.

    Kazaure made the call while addressing the 2017 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 corps members deployed to Ogun at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Sagamu on Thursday.

    The director-general, who was represented by Mrs Adetokunbo Idowu, a director in the NYSC, said the scheme had adopted some innovations to ensure that corps members were better engaged after their service.

    Kazaure also advised corps members to develop their potential for entrepreneurship excellence rather than seeking for scarce white-collar jobs.

    Kazaure also called on them to utilise the opportunity provided by the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development ( SAED ) programme to acquire additional skills for self-employment.

    “The NYSC has provided all the tools and support you need to develop your capacity to the fullest, it depends on you, there is no short cut to success but hard work.

    “Of all the programmes outlined for you during the orientation, there is none more important that you must fully participate in than the SAED programme.

    “I want you to create your own jobs by being creative and innovative, you must strive to be labour employers rather than labour seekers.

    “Please don’t look for white-collar jobs, your skills and potential can serve you better in the way of realising your dreams,” he said.

    Kazaure said that SAED programme was packaged through a partnership with public and private sector organisations toward building an entrepreneurial capacity.

    He also urged corps members to remain in their states of deployment and contribute toward the promotion of national unity rather than seeking redeployment back home.

    Also speaking, Mr John Okpo, the Ogun NYSC Coordinator, thanked Kazaure for the visit.

    “We will continue to deploy corps members to all identified areas of needs, especially the rural communities where we shall implement advocacy programmes of interest,” Okpo said.

    About 2,442 corps members, comprising 1,270 males and 1,172 females, are participating in the orientation programme in the state.

    No clash between Corps members and Soldiers in Kano – Coordinator

    Alhaji Ladan Baba, the Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ) in Kano has debunked media reports that there was a clash between soldiers and some corps members in the orientation camp at Karaye Local Government Area of the state.

    A statement by Aliyu Ahmed,the NYSC public relations officer and made available on Sunday in Kano denied the report.

    According to the Coordinator, there was also no any clash between the military, Paramilitary and the corps members as reported.

    “The attention of the Management of the NYSC has been drawn to news reports of skirmishes between a group of Corps members and the Camp Commandant, Capt. Anyaegbunan during the ongoing 2017 Batch ‘B’ Orientation Course at Karaye.

    “We wish to state for the records that the face-off started as a result of actions taken by a group of Corps members in solidarity with their colleagues who were being punished while loitering within the Camp Premises as social activity was going on.

    “The chanting of solidarity songs by the Corps members was an effort to get the erring Corps member released from the Camp Commandant which later ignited a rowdy session”, he said.

    The Coordinator added that the situation was immediately brought under control after he addressed the Corps members on the issue.

    “I promised to interface with the Camp Commandant to ensure that punishment and reward for Corps members are handled in line with the provision of the NYSC Bye law”.

    He reminded the Corps members of the need to adhere to the channel of communication in the Camp and assured them that NYSC Management would continue to implement policies and programmes that will enhance the welfare and security of Corps members in the Camp and during the service year.

    The Coordinator also drew the attention of all media organizations on the need to also adhere to their age-long tradition of balance and objectivity in news reporting.

    He further urged them to always verify their sources of news and to report objectively, saying normalcy has since returned to the Camp as all scheduled activities were on going without hindrance.

    The NYSC Coordinator also called on the public to always ignore such unbalanced reports so as to maintain the existing peace and unity among the corps members and the country at large.

    Emefiele tasks graduates on job creation

    Mr Godwin Emefiele, the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN ), has tasked  graduating students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka ( UNN ) to create jobs in order to overcome the current economic challenges.

    In a statement by Mr Isaac Okoroafor, the Acting Director, CBN Corporate Communications, Emefiele gave the charge while delivering the institution’s 47th Convocation Lecture entitled: “A mindset for Succeeding in Today’s Nigeria”.

    He said that the rising unemployment was the greatest challenge facing the country, warning that failure to empower the youth could boomerang against the Nigerian society.

    He emphasised the need for young Nigerian graduates to change their mindset about the labour market, stressing that in spite of the challenges, Nigeria remained a land of limitless opportunities.

    Emefiele, an alumnus of the university, charged the graduating students to strive to be job creators and entrepreneurs rather than being mere job-seekers.

    He said the CBN, as part of its efforts to address unemployment and promote entrepreneurship, the bank had designed and formulated policies and programmes aimed at direct real sector intervention.

    The CBN chief encouraged the graduating students and youths with not more than five years post-service experience to take advantage of the CBN Youth Entrepreneurship Development Programme ( YEDP ).

    According to him, the programme is run in collaboration with other banks and the National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ).

    He tasked the graduating students to take cognisance of the opportunities in their respective environments to motivate themselves by creating innovative ideas as well as turn the ideas into profitable ventures.

    Earlier in is his address, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, said the convocation lecture was one of the prestigious public lectures hosted by the university.

    He said the privilege of delivering the lecture was usually reserved for men and women, whose achievements would motivate and inspire graduating students and the entire university community for greater achievements.

    Ozumba used the occasion to call for adequate funding of some ongoing projects embarked upon by the institution.

    He said that the projects would not only boost entrepreneurship and innovation, but also help to curb youth restiveness in the country.

    NYSC partners financial institutions to secure soft loans for members

    The National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ) on Monday said it partnered some financial institutions in the country to provide soft loans for corps members to start business.

    The Director-General of the corps, Brig. Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, told newsmen on the sideline of his visit to the 2017 NYSC Batch B Stream I Corps members at Wamakko Orientation Camp in Sokoto that the loan would help the young corps members.

    Kazaure said “we introduced skills acquisition programmes to improve the capacity
    of corps members and to key into Federal Government’s programmes of diversifying the country’s economy.

    “We thought that our corps members need soft loans to enable them to start a business and earn a living during and after their service year.

    “NYSC, therefore, entered into partnership with some financial institutions like Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN ), Heritage Bank and Bank of Industry to secure loans for corps members at single digit interest rate.”

    The NYSC boss said the loans were for corps members to start small scale enterprises from the grassroots and practically expand the knowledge gained during their skills acquisition programme in the service year.

    Kazaure added that NYSC would establish a skills acquisition centre in each of the six geopolitical zones in the country, with the aim of ensuring that corps members got the skills they required.

    He commended the Sokoto State Government for providing peaceful atmosphere for members serving in the state and urged them to reciprocate the gesture.

    The NYSC Coordinator in Sokoto State, Alhaji Musa Abubakar, thanked Kazaure for the visit to the camp and commended the corps members for maintaining discipline.

    Brig.- Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, Director General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has charged youth corps members deployed to various Orientation Camps in the Country to learn trades and establish small-scale businesses for self-reliance.

    Kazaure gave the charge while declaring open the swearing in and oath taking of Batch B members of 2017 /2018 of the NYSC in Dutse on Friday.

    He said that securing automatic employment from government or private organizations in the Country is no longer automatic hence the need for corps members to learn something and become independent after the service.

    The DG also charged the corps members to be good ambassadors of their respective states and the institutions they graduated from by exhibiting high sense of responsibility and good character in all their affairs.

    ‘’Your good conduct and character will determine your future wherever you find yourselves,’’ he said.

    In a remark, the chairman of the governing board of the NYSC in the state and the Commissioner for Information, youth, sports and culture, Alhaji Bala Ibrahim congratulated the corps members for gratuating successfully from their various institutions and mobilization to serve in the state.

    Ibrahim reminded them to note that they are under oath and allegiance to serve the state and the country in general faithfully with all sense of purpose and humility.

    Earlier in his address, the state Coordinator of NYSC, Mr. Michale Amolo disclosed that a total of 2,019 were deployed to the state, 1,113 males and 906 females as at the time of swearing-in and orientation.

    Amolo told the corps members that the Orientation was meant to acquaint them with the challenges of life that will propel them to be self-reliant towards nation building and egalitarian society

    NYSC registers 2,071 corps members in Niger

    The National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ) says it registered 2,071 corps members comprising 991 males and 1,080 females for the 2017 Batch ‘B’ orientation course in Niger.

    Mrs Theresa Arokoyo, the NYSC Coordinator in the state, disclosed this on Thursday during the swearing-in-ceremony in Paiko.

    She called on corps members to participate actively in camp activities and acquire skills that would be beneficiary to them after the service year.

    Arokoyo disclosed that the scheme would partner with the state government in the development of its agricultural value chain programme.

    She commended the state government for its support and cooperation in ensuring effective and efficient performance of the scheme in the state.

    In his remarks, Gov. Abubakar Bello of Niger, urged corps members to be more patriotic as the nation continue to address its socio-economic and security challenges.

    Bello, who was represented by his deputy, Alhaji Ahmed Ketso, said that the fight against epidemic diseases, illiteracy, pastoral crisis, poverty and collective quest for sustainable democratic governance required a collective efforts.

    “I challenge you to see yourselves as agents of change to sensitise our people towards the much-clamoured national orientation and nation building.

    “It is my belief that your education, exposure and call for national service have given you enough psychological and mental preparedness needed to fight those vices that deprive us of our deserved position in the comity of nations,” he said.

    Bello commended the corps members for their campaign against HIV/AIDS and drug abuse among youths in the state.

    He gave the assurance that corps members would be given adequate security in their respective places of primary assignment.

    Lalong commends NYSC skills acquisition programme

    Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau has commended the National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ) skills acquisition programme for corps members.

    Lalong gave the commendation on Thursday in Mangu at the inauguration of the 2017, Batch “B” stream one.

    He was represented by his Deputy, Prof. Sonni Tyoden.

    The governor said that the programme would help the beneficiaries to acquire additional practical knowledge and skills that would make them to be more productive and useful to the society in future.

    The governor urged the beneficiaries to pay attention to the programme.

    “The scheme runs a skills acquisition programme during the three weeks orientation which I believe you will find useful in future, please, take it seriously,” Lalong said‎.

    Lalong drew the corps members’ attention to the growing unemployment rate and described the development as a major problem facing Nigerian youths.

    “Millions of youths are out there searching for non-existing white-collar jobs. Those of you with alternative skills will not join that search because you would have prepared yourselves for self-employment.

    “The initiative of the programme is make you self-reliant at the end of the service of your year.”

    He also advised the corps members to visit micro/small ‎enterprises clinic for more knowledge on small business registration and access to soft loans.

    ‎The governor assured the corps members of their safety in Plateau.

    In her remarks, Plateau NYSC Coordinator, Fumilayo Akin-Moses, advised corps members to participate fully in camp activities to prepare them for the service year.

    Akin-Moses also urged them to participate in the various skills acquisition programmes to prepare them for life after the service year.

    2,886, corps members, comprising 1,407 males and 1,479 females were registered as at the close of the exercise on Wednesday.

    NYSC sanctions 15 corps members in Nasarawa

    The National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ) in Nasarawa State says 15 corps members in the Batch B Stream 1 had been sanctioned for various misconducts.

    The state NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Zainab Isah, confirmed the action in an interview in Lafia on Friday.

    Isah said that the affected corps members had their service year extended by various periods.

    According to her, 2,224 Batch B Corp members successfully completed their service year.

    She added that the successful NYSC corps members were issued certificates of national service at a low key passing out ceremony held in Lafia, on Thursday.

    Isah explained that the decision to extend the service year of the erring corps members was the recommendation of the state NYSC Disciplinary Committee.
    She said the sanction was to serve as a deterrent to others.

    “We have four corps members who absconded from service. Then 11 of them have various disciplinary cases.

    “I am really disappointed that even with the noble effort of government through this scheme, some people are not taking advantage of what NYSC is offering,” she said.

    The coordinator, however, disclosed that three corps members would be given awards for outstanding performances in their host communities.

    Isah advised the just passed out corps members to be self-reliant rather than wait to seek for white collar jobs.

    “They should go ahead with what we taught them in camp. They should just continue with those trainings and I am sure those trainings will see them through and in no distance time, they too will be employers of labour,” she said.

    She thanked the state government for its support to the scheme and urged for its sustenance especially in the area of engagement of corps members who might have made significant positive impact in the area of their primary assignments.

    NYSC extends service of 12 corps members in Ekiti for misconduct

    The National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ), has extended the services of 12 corps members in the 2016 Batch B, Stream 1, posted to Ekiti, by three months for offences bordering on misconduct and truancy.

    Mrs Eze Ukagha, the NYSC Coordinator in Ekiti, announced this on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti, during the passing out ceremony of 1,739 corps members.

    Ukagha also announced that two corps members received state honours award for hard work and commitment to the values of the scheme.

    She said that during the service year, the corps members acquired entrepreneurial skills that would enable them to be independent.

    Ukagha said that most of the corps members in the batch demonstrated unalloyed patriotism during the service year, and were worthy ambassadors of their fatherland.

    The coordinator called on them to build on the existing foundation of the scheme by contributing their quota to the development of the country.

    One of the corps members, Miss Ibitoye Abiola, with registration No. EK/16B/0580 advised her fellow corps members to utilise the skills acquired during the service year to become self-reliant.

    NYSC records 72 births from 2016/17 batch B corps members in Oyo

    The National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC ), Oyo state, has disclosed that the 2016/17 batch B (stream1) Corps Members deployed to the state gave birth to no fewer than 72 children.

    The Oyo state NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Ifeoma Anidobi made this known in an interview in Ibadan.

    Anidobi noted that the state also recorded 20 marriages by the corps members and three deaths out of the total of 3,406 corps members passing out in the state on Thursday.

    “The 3,406 consists of 1,504 males, 1,902 females, 3 members received state’s awards while 1 received chairman’s award; 38 have commendation letters, 28 have disciplinary cases.

    “Those with disciplinary cases are to serve extension of service ranging from two weeks to four months,” she said.

    She urged the corps members not to view the country’s economy negatively but to see it as an opportunity to maximize their potential and utilise the knowledge acquired during Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development ( SAED ) training.

    Anidobi assured them that the skills would definitely help them not only to meet the expectations of the society but overcome the challenges that may come thereafter.

    “Develop positive attitude towards the gains of the SAED programme, within a foreseeable future, you will not only be smiling to the bank but will become a great force to reckon with as outstanding entrepreneurs and industrialists,” she said.

    The Coordinator further advised the outgoing corps members to always strive to do the right thing at the right time and abide by the law all the time.

    She urged them to remain focused and be good ambassadors of the NYSC and their respective families.

    Anidobi, however, commended the corps members for leaving their host communities better than they met them.

    “As you take your final bow out of this prestigious, noble scheme, God will order your steps and make all crooked ways straight.

    “The lines will fall into pleasant places for you distinguished ones, safe journey to your respective glorious destinies,” the coordinator prayed.
