    Corps members mark AIDs Day

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Ogun State have held a health sensitisation procession to commemorate the World AIDS Day. The Corps members, who are members of anti-Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Sexually-Transmitted Infections Community Development Service (CDS) group, held the rally in Agbara to sensitise residents of their host community on the need to stop the spread of the HIV and other sexually-transmitted diseases.

The event with the theme: HIV free generation, featured a procession around the Agbara district, where the Corps members enlightened residents on various ways by which HIV could be contracted, and the need to know their HIV status.  There was also counselling session and free HIV test for the residents.

On how she benefited from the programme, one of the residents, who identified herself as Mama Olumide, said: “The initiative is a welcome development, because it has enlightened us on the danger of the spread of HIV and how the disease could be prevented. We live our normal lives without knowing our HIV status. But with this programme, majority of the residents who benefited from this initiative now know their status.”

Another beneficiary, Mrs Kemi Okesanjo, emphasised the need to sustain the programme. “Many are still unaware of this programme and still don’t know their HIV status. As much as I commend the Corps members for this event, I also want to suggest that the programme should be sustained, because it would help to curb the spread of HIV.”

The president of the CDS group, Grace Alademomi, said the sensitisation was created as a cardinal programme of the group because of the need to prevent the spread of HIV and Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in rural areas. She hailed members of the CDS group for their collaboration in ensuring the success of the programme.

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Caleb Adebayo, has trained some Lagos State secondary school pupils on waste recycling. The training was in line with global efforts to combat natural disasters and environmental pollution. IBRAHIM ADEYEMI reports.

A National Youth Service Corps member, Caleb Adebayo, has trained secondary school pupils on waste recycling at a workshop tagged: Teach young girls. This is against the background of natural disasters trailing the high rate of waste generation in communities across the country, which threatens people’s wellbeing.

Caleb, a former CAMPUSLIFE correspondent at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, trained pupils of Girls Junior Secondary Grammar School in Obalende on how to reduce, reuse and recycle wastes. The project, named: “Project 4R” was carried out under the banner of Earthplus, a non-governmental organisation, established by Caleb to combat environmental pollution and promote ecological sustainability, energy efficiency and climate.

Facilitators from various organisations engaged the young girls on various topics. The girls were drawn from all academic levels to ensure the spread of the message among their classmates.

Caleb noted the programme was in line with the objectives of a global campaign tagged: “Let-Girls-Learn”, to mark the International Day of the Girl Child. He explained, in simple terms, the concept of climate change and how it affected human existence.

He said: “The aim of this project is to help secondary school pupils understand the connection between ill-health and poor waste management. Non-recycled items, such plastic bottles and other non-biodegradable item, have contributed to environmental disasters.”

Using a diagram, Caleb demonstrated how global warming happened and the role pupils could play in combating it.

Representative of Belouga, an anti-disaster organisation, Sunday Nsiagwai, who is a member of the United Nations (UN) Major Group on Children and Youth, engaged the children on how they could prepare for climate-related disasters. He used video illustration to depict the effects of natural disaster on people’s wellbeing.

Esther Chukwukere, founder of She Recycles, a pro-green organisation, took the pupils on practical session on the process of recycling waste materials. She demonstrated how the pupils could fabricate a stool from non-biodegradable plastic bottles, cartons, fibre and garment.

The pupils were divided into groups to carry out the recycling process. Fikayo Ibilola, an Earthplus member, supervised the practical session, which was followed by an interactive session where the pupils won fictional books by Ben Carson, Chimamanda Adichie and water bottles. At the end of the practical exercise, prizes were given to the teams with the best designs.

Fikayo said funding remained the key challenge threatening the sustainability of the projects, urging corporate organisations to partner the organisers in order to reach out to more girls.

She said:“Funding the project is made possible by the kind donations of members of Earthplus. No corporate organisation was willing to provide funds to execute this important programme. We are happy we have made the project a reality despite leaned resources at our disposal. We hope the subsequent projects would be funded to increase the impact.”

Caleb said: “4R is an abbreviation that means reduce, reuse, recycle and respond. We realised that apart from the need to reduce waste through these means, there is also a need to create awareness among young people on the best ways to respond in an environmental disaster in the wake of flood witnessed in some communities across the country this year alone.”

The highpoint was the presentation of two waste bins to the principal of the school, represented by Mrs Fatimoh Ajayi.

Mrs Ajayi, while receiving the gifts, praised Earthplus for bringing the project to the school, describing it as “thoughtful programme”.

She said: “We are glad that the maiden edition of the project is brought to our school. We are confident that our pupils have gained not just knowledge on staying safe during disaster, but useful skills in designing something useful from waste. The school will encourage the pupils trained in the programme to build on their skills for more impacts.”

Kazaure gave the advice during facility tour at the Temporary Orientation Camp, Kaiama, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa.

The director-general said the visit and inspection of the camp was part of his 2017 camp tour to assess corps members’ comfort and security.

Represented by the NYSC Director, Audit, Mr Adeleke Abiodun, the director-generalsaid many corps members had died in auto crash in journeys which they embarked  upon without permit during their service year.

Kazaure insisted that obtaining proper permission would do the corps members more good before travelling out of their duty post.

He added that “before embarking on any journey while in camp or places of your primary assignment, NYSC members should obtain permission because there are sanctions for not doing so.

“Members should only travel when it is necessary and approved; my visit to the camp here in Bayelsa is to see the condition of corps members.

“I am assuring corps members, not only in Bayelsa but across the country, that the management of the scheme and state governments are fully committed to their welfare.”

The NYSC boss also urged them to respect the religions and cultures of their host communities, saying “I also believe that you have been taught on the ways of life, custom and values of your host state.

“I urge you to respect them, be security conscious and don’t just pack your bag and start to travel up and down.

“Find a way to contribute your quota to building a better Nigeria; always pay attention to the skill acquisition programmes in camp and ensure that your life after service is better.”

Bolade said that the orientation in the state had been hitch-free since the camp formerly opened on November 21.

She added that “I must say that this Unique Batch of the scheme has been dedicated to camp activities and I am very sure they are going to surpass their colleague’s achievement when they are posted to their host communities.”

    NYSC to launch CV/job portal

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will launch a CV/job portal (www.nyscjobs.org ) in Lagos on December 8, 2017.

The portal would help employers find corps members with requisite skills and qualifications that match their needs.

The Lagos State NYSC Coordinator, Prince Mohammed Momoh told The Nation in an interview last Thursday at the Swearing in of 2,482 Batch B corps members that the portal was approved by the NYSC Director-General, Brig-Gen Sule Kazaure, after a test run.

“We piloted a job portal in Lagos. After perfecting it, we have deployed it. It has been approved by the DG ansd should be launched in the course of the year,” he said.

Throwing more light on features of the portal, Mrs Rachael Idaewor, Assistant Director, Skill Acquisition Entrepreneurship Development (SAED), said corps members can upload their written and video Curriculum Vitae onto the portal and update them as their careers progress.

“The system is designed to connect all recruiters (multi-nationals, large, medium & small), to authentic CV’s of Nigerian graduates. The icing on the cake is the fact that the recruiters can also watch the candidates speak to them via the NYSC Video CV,” she said.

She added that the portal would feature regular job alerts that corps members could rely on, while employers could store CVs of candidates they shortlist on the portal.

“Recruiting organisations can have spaces created for them on the platform to collate and store text CVs and Video CVs, for present and future recruitment by their organizations,” she said.

In his speech at the event, Momoh thanked the Lagos State government for renovating the 2,500-bed capacity orientation camp located in Iyana- Ipaja, Lagos.

“We appealed to the Governor and he came to our aid. He mobilised a contractor to give us this renovation. He not only re-painted the building but repaired the toilets and the electrification. Every part of the camp was touched,” he said.

Also speaking, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, who was represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Mr Oluseye Oladejo, counseled the new corps members to take advantage of public funds to start businesses after being trained in camp.

“I enjoin you to pay special attention to the Skill Acquisition Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) initiative which is part of activities developed to empower and prepare you for life after service. The Lagos State Government has established the Employment Trust Fund which provides financial support to Lagos State residents and National Youth Service Corps members serving in Lagos State and who have received camp and post-camp SAED training. Through this fund, you stand to benefit from a start-up capital to ensure you become job creators and not job seekers upon the completion of your national assignment,” he said.

The oath of allegiance was administered on the corps members by the Chief Judge of Lagos, justice Opeyemi Oke represented by Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye.

Corps members who spoke with The Nation praised the facilities on the camp.

Jennifer Okpala, a Law graduate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) said she was enjoying her time on camp.

“It has been fun meeting lots of people. The facilities are okay. I will say this is the best camp in Nigeria,” she said.

Jesufemi Ayodele, another Law graduate from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, said the officials were courteous to corps members.

“They treat us with respect,” he said.

21 Corps members to repeat service year in Kano

No fewer than 21 Corps members from Batch ‘B’ Streams I and II serving in Kano State would repeat their service year due to various acts of indiscipline.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Coordinator in the state, Alhaji Ladan Baba, disclosed this on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the passing out of the Batch ‘B’ stream one corps members posted to the state.

“Eight out of the 21 corps members are from the Stream one, 13 of them are from the Stream 2 while 10 corps members would repeat few weeks or months.

“On a sad note, we lost a male and a female corps members, Shuaibu Yahuza from Bauchi State and Happiness Emmanuel from Enugu State, both of the Stream 1,” he said.

He explained that the affected corps members were punished for either absconding from their places of primary assignment or they were absent for more than three months without permission or any concrete reason.

Ladan said that 2,574 corps members passed out from batch ‘B’ Stream 1, describing them as one of the best set they had in recent time.

He added that 13 of the Stream 1 members have excelled and some of them would receive commendation certificates while others would receive the State’s Honours Award.

Baba explained that those that would receive the commendation letters and awards performed wonderfully during the service year at either their places of primary assignments or host communities.

“The efforts of those corps members that excelled have been tremendous because of their contributions to national unity, social integration and development of the state and the country in general,” he said.

According to him, four of them recently participated at a national event on skills acquisition, which they were given certificates.
He commended Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje for his sustained support to the scheme in the state. (NAN)

NYSC: 16 corps members to repeat service in Anambra

Sixteen members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Anambra are to repeat their service year while three others will serve various terms of disciplinary measures.

The Anambra NYSC Coordinator, Mr Ebenezer Olawale, who made the disclosure on Thursday in Awka, said no formal passing out ceremony was held in the state.

Olawale added that certificates were issued at the various local government NYSC offices.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 2, 158 corps members successfully concluded their service year and were issued with discharge certificates.

NAN also reports that seven deserving corps members won the Governor’s Award, while four went home with the Chairman’s Award as the youth members passed out on Thursday.

The coordinator congratulated the outgoing youths but regretted that 19 of them were to face disciplinary measures, with 16 repeating their service, while three would serve the extension of between two and four months.

On the upcoming November 18 governorship polls in Anambra, the NYSC coordinator said that the body still had enough manpower to take care of its expected role in the election.

“There are no fewer than 8,000 corps members currently serving in the state,’’ he said.

Olawale noted that his office would work with the NYSC offices in neighbouring states to Anambra to take care of any shortfall in the provision of personnel for the election.

He said the discharged corps members who wished to take part in the election were at liberty to stay back but no one was under compulsion to do so.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the NYSC Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, will visit Anambra to address corps members ahead of the governorship election.

Olawale told NAN that Kazuaure would hold a one-day interface with the corps members on Nov. 7 alongside heads of other security agencies in Anambra at the Alex Ekweme Square in Awka.

According to him, the director-general’s visit was largely to speak to the corps members who would serve in ad-hoc capacity during the election on the need for them to be neutral.

  • NYSC: Corps member renovates secretariat in Ekiti

NYSC: Corps member renovates secretariat in Ekiti

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Zonal Secretariat in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, which was in a state of disrepair, is now wearing a new look, courtesy of a corps member serving in the town, Miss Ikeade Adebusoye, who renovated the facility. The renovated office, which was inaugurated last week, is giving joy to the NYSC officials and corps members. ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA reports.

When Miss Ikeade Adebusoye was posted to Ekiti State in November, last year to observe her mandatory one-year National Youth Service (NYSC), little did she know that she was on her way to make history and etch her name in the minds of members of the community.

The 2016 graduate of Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, who hails from Ondo State, was posted to Benin Owena River Basin Development Authority (BORBDA) zonal office in Ikere-Ekiti as her place of primary assignment.

But a horrible experience she and other corps members had at the NYSC Zonal Office in Ikere-Ekiti, fired the patriotic zeal in her to contribute her own quota to national development and leave a legacy for generations to come.

Ikeade and her colleagues had gathered for their weekly Community Development Services (CDS) meeting when the heavens opened and a torrential rain descended on the zonal secretariat where they had gathered for the meeting.

The building, which was hitherto derelict and begging for repairs, had its roof leaking at several points while many of the windows which were supposed to shield occupants against ferocious wind and cold had fallen off.

Before Ikeade’s intervention, some members of staff of the NYSC feared that the building could come down, especially during the rainy season when rains pounded the facility.

The experience got the girl thinking and that was the turning point for the NYSC zonal secretariat which has office accommodation for workers of the agency and a hall for meetings for corps members.

Twenty-One-year-old Ikeade conceived the project in May but her meagre N19, 800 monthly allowances was not enough to carry out such an enormous project. She had to run around soliciting for funds to finance the project that was dear to her heart.

It was celebration time on penultimate Tuesday when the new-look project was inaugurated. NYSC officials and fellow corps members celebrated Ikeade, who was joined by her mother, Princess Adejoke Adebusoye and her elder sister, Dr. Adekemi Adebusoye, who just graduated from the medical school.

The newly-renovated zonal secretariat was inaugurated by the State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs. Nwanno Ukagha, who was represented by Assistant Director in charge CDS, Mr. Andy Obarein.

The Ekiti NYSC boss, Mrs. Ukagha, urged other corps members to emulate Miss Adebusoye whom she said had made history by the massive renovation of the zonal office.

Mrs. Ukhagha said: “She has contributed her own quota to national development as a corps member and Ikeade will be remembered for what she has done anytime we are making use of this facility.

“Those of you that will pass out (of NYSC service) in March, this is a challenge to you because you still have more time. Don’t let this opportunity to affect your community pass you by.”

Speaking with Southwest Report, Ikeade, who shares the same birthday (March 7) with her father, Hon. Justice Adegboyega Adebusoye, revealed that she had wanted to embark on a school renovation project because of the pitiable condition of some public schools in the town.

She also revealed that she desired to embark on a borehole project in her neighbourhood because residents trek long distances to get potable water but had to start with the Ikere office of NYSC which is her “primary constituency.”

Ikeade further explained that getting sponsors was taxing but her parents, Justice Adebusoye and Princess Adebusoye; elder sister, Dr. Adebusoye and other public-spirited individuals supported the project.

She said: “One day, we were having our CDS meeting inside the hall when rain began to fall. The rain was getting at us because the roofs were leaking.

“The ceiling was bad; you could see the holes on the roofs from the ceiling. So, we had to be moving chairs here and there and cleaning the floor because the whole place was in bad condition. I didn’t like it.

“There are about three hall ways, I painted inside, outside, the front, the side. Then I had to replace the leaking roofing sheets with new ones. I had to get new iron sheets; I got new asbestos because the old asbestos sheets were damaged.

“I painted the ceiling, did the flooring because the floor too was broken and I got new tiles for the floor. The steps were also in bad condition; they were broken and we had to get cement to smoothen it.

“Initially I thought the project would cost N308, 000 but in all I spent N420, 000 because we had to get extra buckets of paint and had to get new tiles because our earlier estimations were wrong.”

Speaking about the challenges of raising funds for the project, Ikeade said: “It was not easy getting money from people. I showed them the pictures that this is the condition of the place I wanted to renovate. Some of them will say ‘let me help her’ others will say ‘I don’t have money.’

“It was challenging getting the funds; when I called some people they would ask me to call them the other week and on and on and on and the scenario put me off because I had wanted to finish the project by August.

“It was my mum who kept encouraging me; saying nothing comes easy. She told me that I should not expect people to give me money just on the asking. At some time, I fell sick and my mum would be driving me around.

“I had to move round the community; initially some of them didn’t want to help but I kept on disturbing them. It wasn’t easy because it took months to get the money. It was between July, August and September but it was in October that I got the final funds.”

On whether should would embark on such projects beyond her service year, Ikeade said she would continue to serve humanity because she was happy living up to the essence of the NYSC scheme.

She said: “Yes, I will love to do such in the future; even though raising funds was a challenge. It took me just one week to execute the entire project.

“I will love to carry out borehole projects for people lacking access to potable water and also renovate schools to offer our pupils environment conducive to learning.”
