  • 11 Adamawa NYSC members win presidential honors

Eleven former members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) have received Presidential Honours Award for distinguishing themselves during their service year in Adamawa State.

The state Coordinator of the NYSC, Mallam Abubakar Mohammed, said the awardees were among corps members who served the state in 2015/2016/2017.

Mohammed said the ex-corps members distinguished themselves in their Community Development Services (CDS) in the areas of construction, organizing extra lessons, donating books and drugs, among others, to their local communities.

He said the achievement of the corps members came despite the reputation of Adamawa as an insurgency-troubled state, a reputation which he described as being over stressed.

“When corps members are deployed to the state, they develop worries and begin to think of redeployment but when they get firsthand information on the true security situation, they change their mind against locating to another state,” he said.

He urged serving corps members and potential ones to be diligent and seek always to impact on the communities they serve, saying, “It is not difficult to win any award, as one of the criteria is performance at places of primary assignment.”

The 11 Adamawa ex-corps members were among the 168 to whom President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday presented awards at the combined 2015/2016/2017 President’s NYSC Honours Award held at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja.

Buhari, who was represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, also announced automatic employment to the awardees and scholarship up to doctorate level in Nigerian universities.

  • Communication minister vows to appeal judgment against APC

The Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, has vowed to appeal against the high court judgment which struck out the suit he filed against the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Minister had dragged the party to court for barring him from participating in the governorship primary due to his non-participation in the mandatory one-year national service of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) after he graduated from the university.

The Federal High Court, Ibadan, on Friday, struck out the suit for filing it after the expiration of the 14 days stipulated by the law.

But shittu, who phoned into Southwest Political Circuit, a Fresh FM programme, revealed that he had already instructed his lawyers to appeal the judgment.

He said the APC constitution prescribes that aggrieved members must fully explore all internal crisis resolution mechanism before going to court which accounted for why he could not challenge the party’s decision in court within the stipulated time.

According to him, his lawyers would prove all that at the appellate court.

He expressed confidence of winning the case because the constitution does not list possession of NYSC certificate as a requirement for contesting as governor.

He said the party was misguided into taking a wrong decision which the court will correct.

Shittu, who is also a member of the break-away group from the APC in Oyo State, Unity Forum, insisted that all members of the group were still in the APC even though they are officially in the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

“They are in APC, you will have to show me when they resigned their membership of APC, “ he said.

The minister also expressed confidence that President Muhammadu Buhari would reappoint him, saying Buhari would not appoint “failed politicians.”

  • Cultural interaction can foster national unity – NYSC Coordinator

The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra says knowledge and respect for the culture of the various ethnic groups in the country can foster greater unity among Nigerians.

Mr Kehinde Aremu, NYSC Coordinator in Anambra, said this at the cultural festival of the 2018 Batch B Stream One Corps members in Anambra at the Umunya Temporary Orientation Site on Sunday.

According to him, the essence of the cultural festival “is to get our young people to appreciate the Nigerian culture.

“We found out that most of our educated young people have lost touch with the Nigerian culture which binds us together.

“The NYSC thought it wise to introduce culture in its programme as part of efforts to get Nigerians together, because that is our mandate.

“We assigned a particular culture to each platoon, made up of people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

“We made then to research into cultures assigned to them and make presentations on it.

“So, you see these corps members studying many cultures at the same time in this camp.

“There are so much prejudices which they take with them to their places of primary assignment.

“You hear some people telling their children that when they go to some parts of this country that they will eat them, other say they will be killed because they are strangers.

“But cultural interaction such as this in camp will make them to understand that these prejudices that they have been fed with by their parents and older generations are non-existent.

“That is how these fears are destroyed and national unity fostered all over,” he said.

The coordinator said the corps members have been given adequate orientation to enable them to go to the communities of Anambra and contribute to development without any fear of integration problems.

“The job has been done, the local government chairmen, traditional rulers have come to welcome them, direct employers have made their request and are awaiting them, so these Corp members are ready to go into Anambra with so much confidence,” he said.

Igwe Roland Odegbo, the Traditional Ruler of Nteje in Oyi council area, gave his royal blessing to the corps members and assured them of happy stay where ever they found themselves for primary assignment.

Samuel Collins, the 31-year-old man shot dead by unknown gunmen on Saturday in Yenagoa, is not a corps member, an official of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) in Bayelsa, has said.

Mr Mathew Ngobua, Head, Public Relations Unit, NYSC office Yenagoa, made the clarification on Monday in Yenagoa in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said that checks conducted at NYSC database revealed that the name of the victim was not in the record.

He described reports that the victim was a corps member as “misleading,’’ adding that the security of corps members was top priority of the management of the NYSC in Bayelsa.

NAN reports that Collins was until his death, a contract security guard.

He was shot by unknown gunmen and dispossessed of his mobile phone, money and other valuables in Kpansia suburb of Yenagoa.

The Police Public Relations Officer at the Bayelsa Command, Mr Asinim Butswat, had confirmed the incident to NAN on Sunday in Yenagoa.

  • Ramadan: Muslim groups kick against exercise, activities by NYSC, Army

Ramadan: Muslim groups kick against exercise, activities by NYSC, Army

A coalition of no fewer than fifty Islamic Propagation Organisations under the auspices of the Da’awah Coordination Council of Nigeria (DCCN) have vehemently lamented the conduct of some activities by the Nigerian Army and the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), during the ongoing Ramadan fast.

They kicked against conducting such exercise and activities‎ during the holy month of Ramadan by the authorities. The coalition group, hitherto, decried the ”recalcitrance” of the Nigerian Army and the NYSC for conducting the screening of new recruits and camping, during the Ramadan fast period.

The coalition made known their feelings Wednesday in Sokoto at a news briefing by the Council’s National President, Malam Lawal Maidoki. Maidoki said, “despite pleas, appeals and protests, the duo had continued to put some Nigerian Muslim youth to the rigours and temptation of their respective camps in the sacred Ramadan period.

“This act of insensitivity betrays the contempt with which Islam and its sanctity are being treated by such common national symbols as the Nigerian Army and the NYSC, among many others.

“As Muslim organisations, we consider the scheduling of the selection and the training exercises by the duo as a deliberate attempt of short-changing the Muslim youth.”

According to him, Nigerian Muslims,” do not regard as any good gesture,” the exemption of Muslim youth from the rigours of the training in Ramada period.

“On the contrary, we regard such gesture as another denial of fundamental opportunity to get exposed to the diverse survival skills the camp such as that of the NYSC stands to offer.

“As such, the only solution to this clear injustice lies in the avoidance of all training and selections in our camps during the period of Ramadan,” Maidoki, averred.

The National President, however, called on the Muslim Ummah to utilize the period of Ramadan, ” to pray to live to witness a better Nigeria, where all Nigerians will be treated equally.”
