Lead Generation Initiative vows to join nationwide protest

The Lead Generation Initiative (LGI), a non-governmental, non-partisan and non-profit organisation, has vowed to take part in the upcoming national protest on August 1, 2024.

This decision followed an emergency stakeholders meeting to evaluate the state of the nation and address pressing issues affecting the future of Nigeria.

According to the statement by the LGI’s media manager, Kola Popoola, the protest is to draw the government’s attention to critical issues vital to the nation’s development and progress.

It said by participating in the demonstration, LGI aims to advocate for positive change and contribute to building a better future for Nigeria.

The NGO’s media handler explained that protest serves as a fundamental tool for citizens to assert their demands and drive transformative change.

“As an integral component of the Get Involved Leadership Training (GiLT) programme of LGI, members are well-equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to engage in peaceful protests effectively,” the statement reads in part.

LGI added that all its members participating in the protest are committed to demonstrating peacefully and within the confines of the law. It is emphasized that no protester should possess any form of weapon during the demonstration.

LGI said the protest will demand: the need to include people in every discussion of national interest; support the naira and stop its free fall; open the boarders and allow importation of food without any levy; decentralise distribution of food items and include other organisations; amend the constitution to prevent anyone above 70 from contesting for any political position, except for legislative offices that require institutional memory to advance national development as well as others.

Cabals behind planned nationwide protest, says Presidency

The Presidency has said cabals and enemies of Nigeria opposed to President Bola Tinubu’s innovative policies and youth-inclusive government are behind tomorrow’s proposed protest.

Special Adviser to President on Student Engagement, Sunday Asefon, stated this on Wednesday in Abuja during a town hall meeting on the proposed protest.

The meeting was convened by the Chairman, Wells Carlton Hotel and Apartments, Mr Osahon Okunbo.

According to Asefon, the cabals and bad elements are behind the move for protest because they are uncomfortable with the progress the Tinubu government was making.

He said: “They are used to a system where ministers are appointed based on age, but President Tinubu has come to change that. He has brought in young people and introduced policies that are not in line with their interests.”

Asefon highlighted the administration’s achievements, particularly in the education sector, saying: “No president has achieved what President Tinubu has done in one year.”

He added: “President Tinubu has made student loans a reality, resolved the long-standing issue between the federal government and lecturers, and introduced policies that benefit young people.”

Asefon lamented that he has failed to effectively communicate Tinubu’s achievements to the public, particularly on campuses.

“I have failed because I couldn’t go to campuses to tell them what our president has been achieving since one year in office. But I’m sure that is the Nigeria many of us have dreamed of,” he said.

The President, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Lucky Emonefe, urged Nigerians to be patient with Tinubu’s government.

He added that the protest, if held, may be hijacked and could lead to mayhem, adding that the president should endeavour to meet the cries of Nigerian students.

Other stakeholders, political leaders and CSOs in the gathering encouraged Nigerians to shelve the protest and embrace dialogue.

  • Nationwide protest not the solution

    Nationwide protest not the solution

Sir: The bold economic policies introduced by the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have led to a hike in inflation; making it difficult for people to meet their basic needs. The Head Line Inflation Rate rose to 34.19% in June 2024 from 33.95% in May 2024. It has also resulted in large foreign exchange losses for businesses, among other issues.

However, given the state of the economy when the government took office, these measures were necessary. There was a need for transformational, big-bang changes in economic policies, often referred to as ‘’shock therapy’’. The planned protest is unnecessary, as the government is fully aware of the short-term pains the Nigerian people are experiencing and is working around the clock to alleviate it. It is therefore important to highlight some of the major interventions and achievements of the present administration.

The federal government introduced a wage award of N35,000 for federal civil servants, pending the implementation of a new minimum wage. Some state governments followed suit and paid wage awards to civil servants in their states at different rates. The good news is that a new national minimum wage of N70,000 has been approved by the federal government and will be implemented once passed by the National Assembly signed into law by Mr President. The new national minimum wage represents a 133% increase from the current national minimum wage of N30,000. While it could have been more, considerations of affordability and sustainability were taken into account.

The government also made conditional direct cash transfers targeted at millions of households to improve their standard of living. Thousands of metric tons of foodstuffs have also been distributed to alleviate hardship. Many doubt the effectiveness of these interventions; therefore, it is important for the government to conduct independent audits on the efficacy of these intervention programs from time to time.

To deal with the soaring prices of foodstuffs, President Tinubu approved the suspension of duties, tariffs, and taxes for the importation of certain food commodities, including husked brown rice, wheat, maize, and cowpeas, through land and sea for 150 days. He also approved the importation of 250,000 metric tonnes of wheat and maize, respectively. These measures are not intended to undermine the efforts of domestic farmers but to address the issue of scarcity that has led to soaring prices. Many believe that the government should have acted earlier.

The student loan scheme launched by this government is laudable. It will enable children from poor families to attend tertiary education, thereby increasing their chances of having a bright future and making them more useful to society instead of becoming miscreants and a burden and security risk. The introduction of a consumer credit scheme is another great achievement of this administration. This will help stimulate household consumption and the economy as a whole.

The clearance of a $7billion forex backlog by this government has led to increased foreign investor confidence, which is very commendable. The government has also been able to stabilize the exchange rate to a good extent and reduce the arbitrage between the parallel market and the official market. Exchange rate stability is important for businesses as it facilitates proper planning. The government should ensure that this stability is sustained.

The removal of the fuel subsidy, though causing hardship for Nigerians as transportation has become very expensive, has helped free up resources for the government to invest in critical areas of the economy, infrastructure, and security. It has also reduced pressure for borrowing. In the long run, fuel price is expected to decrease as domestic refineries commence production. The government should ensure that domestic crude is supplied to these refineries.

While protests are not the solution to Nigeria’s challenges and therefore unnecessary, there is still room for improvement on the part of the federal government. It should demonstrate care for the plight of the people through its actions and words. The government’s achievements should be properly publicized, emphasizing their importance. Just as the government has intervened in the food crisis, it would also be beneficial for the government to do all it can to reduce the cost of transportation, as it is a major driver of inflation.

Nationwide protest: NOA appeals to promoters to pursue dialogue

The National Orientation Agency has urged the promoters of the proposed nationwide protests to pursue dialogue rather than violence.

It also revealed that the agency’s nationwide structure has successfully identified the sponsors of the proposed protest and likely flashpoints, saying the government will take measures to forestall any violent occurrences in the identified locations.

The agency’s director general, Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu, who made it clear that the channels of communication to the government and its various arms remain open to dialogue, said it would continue to respect citizens’ right to protest and associate freely in line with democratic principles.

He said: “That the identities of many of the brains behind the protest have been known, along with their collaborators who are safely residing abroad and the government is taking necessary actions to stop their subversive plans.

“That the intentions of the elements behind the planned protest are not about governance or the state of the economy but a decoy to destabilize the country, cause mayhem, and carry out arson, killings, and maiming of innocent citizens for narrow political reasons.

“That NOA is intensifying efforts in civil intelligence gathering and sensitization of community leaders, parents, and youths across the 774 local governments on the need for vigilance and collective preventive actions.

“That the other objective of the protest is to project to the international community, a picture of an unstable country as part of the grand design to intimidate the government and seek patronage of the bigger sponsors of the planned protest.”
