No patient will die of negligence in NAUTH, says CMD

Chief Medical Director, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, Prof Joseph Ugboaja has assured that the era of loss of lives in the health facility due to negligence of medical personnel is over.

He blamed such ugly incidents on the poor and unfriendly work environment at the hospital’s former location which affected the attitude of most personnel, assuring that such experiences were history with the state-of-art equipment and healthy environment at the permanent site.

Ugbaja spoke at a post-press briefing following the celebration of the 1st anniversary of the official commissioning of the Permanent Site, the complete relocation of the hospital units, and the maiden visit of the Coordinating Minister of Health & Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Ali Pate.

According to the CMD:  “Prior to my coming on board, the hospital was operating in a small space with 300-bed capacity with old and debilitated buildings with obsolete equipment.

“This space constraint greatly limited the volume and quality of care available to the patient. It also brought about a poor and uncomfortable work environment leading to poor staff attitude to work. The overall impact was a poor rating of our hospital both locally and nationally.

“Our narrative then was largely negative because everywhere was congested and workers were not happy. We won’t expect such behavior here, those attitudes now belong to the past.

“I can assure you in this new facility, with the state-of-the-art equipment, conducive environment, and ambiance, such an occurrence will not happen. But if by chance it happens, be sure the system will interrogate it, because it won’t be business as usual,” he said.

  • ‘We don’t detain patients for not paying’

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, Anambra State, has denied allegations that it detaining indigent patients.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Anthony Igwegbe, who made the clarification on Wednesday in Nnewi, said the hospital had no policy of detaining anybody over inability to pay bills.

He explained that patients who delayed in payment were given some period of grace to pay. He also hinted that the hospital sometimes write off the bills of indigent patients.

According to Igwegbe, some philanthropists pay occasional visits to the hospital, especially during festivities, to offset bills for indigent patients.

He said: “We do not trap anybody. We offer services to our patients and they are expected to pay thereafter. We use our facilities, drugs, expertise and materials. At the end of the day, patients are expected to pay so we can replenish those things to treat others.

“Sometimes we have patients who are very indigent and we write off their bills. But that is a great loss to the hospital because it affects our finances and running of the hospital. When you don’t replace your consumables, you run out of stock.”

The CMD, however, hinted that medical services would soon begin at the hospital’s permanent site in between Nnewi and Oraifite.

He said the movement became necessary to decongest the temporary site which the hospital had outgrown over the years.

    Barbaric church killing: Priest unhurt

Buhari, Saraki, Dogara, others condemn attack

It was all like an action-packed movie.

A gunman dressed in black, storming a church and opening fire on worshippers.

There was commotion. By the time the gunman left, no fewer than 11 worshippers lay dead.

That was the scene yesterday at St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Amakwa-Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State. The gunman came during the early morning mass.

Many were injured during the incident, which Governor Willie Obiano described as “sacrilegious”.

An eyewitness, who narrated how the attack occurred, said the priest, Rev. Fr. Jude Onwuaso, was unhurt. The witness, who said he was part of those who evacuated the victims, said the gunman went into the church, identified Chief Akunwafor Ikegwuonwu, a parishioner, and shot him dead. He then went on the rampage, shooting indiscriminately at worshippers.

Commissioner of Police Garba Baba Umar said 11 persons were killed and 18 injured. He said some people in the community had been invited for interrogation.

It was leant that the gunman may have struck on the instruction of one of two suspected drug barons from the community who live in South Africa. One of them, who was the gunman’s target, is believed to have built the Catholic Church about two years ago.

There are two accounts of the incident. One is that a gunman committed the crime. The other claimed there were six gunmen.

A source from the community, who pleaded for anonymity, told The Nation that the gunmen visited the home of one of the drug barons, perhaps to assassinate him, but discovered that he had travelled.

This, according to the source, might have made them to visit the Catholic Church near his house.

The father of the suspected drug baron was killed along with others in the church

The police commissioner said preliminary investigation revealed that the attack was carried out by people from the area and not by Boko Haram as being speculated in some quarters.

He said: “From our findings, it is very clear that the person who carried out the attack must be an indigene of the area.

“We gathered that worshippers for 6 o’clock Sunday mass at St. Philip Ozobulu were in the service when gunmen dressed in black attire, covering their faces with fez caps, entered the church and moved straight to a particular direction and opened fire.

“The men, after shooting at their targeted victim, still went on a shooting spree, killing and wounding other worshippers.’’

It was learnt that the attackers were speaking Igbo when firing at the worshippers.

Umar said though no arrest had been made, the police were working on the information that the attack followed a quarrel between two Ozubulu men living abroad.

The commissioner of police said it was wrong for the perpetrators of the act to take their quarrel into the church, saying “such conduct shows the people behind the act do not fear God’’.

The police have launched a manhunt for suspects.

Dismissing the rumour that the attack was carried out by Boko Haram elements, Umar urged residents to go about their businesses without fear.

Obiano visited the church and the Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital, NAUTH, Nnewi where the injured were being treated.

He also confirmed that the shooting followed a clash of two brothers based abroad. He described it as a “communal feud”.

Obiano promised to offset the medical bills of the injured and assist in the funeral for those killed.

Some of the critically injured died on the way to the hospital.

Obiano added that intelligence report linked the shooting to an existing feud between some members of Umuezekwe Ofufe Amakwa community of Ozubulu living abroad.

“It is an isolated case and I urge worshippers in the Church and residents of the area to go about their normal activities.”

He also said 50 doctors had been mobilised to the hospital to assist in providing the best medical care to the injured persons.

The governor also visited Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Cathedral, Nnewi, where he addressed a congregation of worshippers.

He intimated the worshippers on the true picture of the incident, saying there was nothing to worry about.

The Priest of St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Jude Onwuaso, said the attack took place at about 6.30 a.m.

According to him, an unidentified man came into the church, shot at a man,  Ikegwuonwu, before shooting sporadically at other worshippers.

An eyewitness, who simply identified herself as a choir member, said the church was dark as there was no power supply at the time.

She said the generating set suddenly stopped working; so, the mass proceeded with the congregation using candles.

According to her, the gunman, after the shooting, immediately jumped into a waiting car with a driver.

One of the survivors, Mr. Stephen Ohamadike told The Nation at the church premises that the gunmen entered the church around 6.45am as they were about to begin “ the prayer of the faithful”.

His words: “Those of us who were to say the prayers of the faithful had just assembled at the altar and I had number 2 which meant that I was to say the prayer for Nigeria.

“Suddenly, I saw someone who was putting on a cap, shooting indiscriminately inside the church.

“There was pandemonium and in the midst of the confusion, I just lay down on the floor.

“The officiating priest and the Mass servers quickly left the altar and the Mass came to an abrupt end.

”I counted 11 bodies and many were injured. I used the vehicle belonging to Pa Ikwgwuonu to take him and his wife and others to Evans Hospital where the doctors advised us to go to the teaching hospital.  I used the car to convey many other people to the hospital before I came back to Amakwa.”

    Obiano visits injured pupils

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano yesterday visited the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi (NAUTH), to sympathise with survivors of an accident at Awka, in which seven persons died.

A reckless driver rammed into the pupils of Union Secondary School and Community Secondary School in Umuokpu while they were waiting for buses.

Seven pupils died and many were injured.

Obiano assured the pupils his administration would not abandon them.

He said: “Don’t despair. You are in good hands. We shall take care of you. We shall pay your hospital bills and make sure nothing bad happens to you.”

The governor, moved by the sight of patients sweating, following heat in the wards, promised to provide the hospital with a 500KVA generator.

  • Teaching hospital performs first hip surgery

For the first time since its inception, the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) Nnewi has concluded three successful ‘total hip replacement’ operations.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof Robinson Ofiaeli, who was among the six orthopaedic surgeons that performed the high-tech specialised operations, said the hospital carried out the feat with the assistance of two Indian doctors from Fortis Hospital.

The Indians are Sabhash Jongid and Krishna Chandran, and Dr Chima Ihegihu and two others from NAUTH, with Emzor Hesco Limited, supplying the equipment used for the surgery.

Prof Ofiaeli said: “The hospital will from January 2013 start offering Total Hip Replacement operation on regular basis; just as it would equally start ‘Total Knee Replacement’ operations and equipment has been ordered and would be arrive the country this month.

“We will start offering the operation on regular basis and the next time we will carry out this operation will be in January 2013 and we hope to add ‘Total Knee Replacement’ operation to what we will be doing,” said Ofiaeli.

He said that the two operations constitute more than 60 percent of the reasons why Nigerians travel to other countries of the world for such specialized operations. He noted that the service could be offered at a reduced cost of at least 70 percent.

“Nigerians who travel abroad to get the operation done on them pay as high as N3.5 million, but now it is done in Nnewi, they can only pay 35 per cent of that cost, which is about N1. 05 million, to do it in Nnewi” he said.

He said “one of the benefits Nigerians can get for the service is that the hospital is offering the best quality service to our people. It is the same equipment and implant we are using here nothing less to what is obtained anywhere in the world. They will get three weeks attention after the surgery unlike outside the country”.

”We were initially faced with a lot of technical problems, which we surmounted and the first operation took us one day, while the remaining two were done the same day, it is not an operation a single surgeon can do.

Enumerating some of the achievements recorded in the hospital the CMD said “as you are aware, we are one of the teaching hospitals that received VAMED equipment from the Federal government, the equipment worth over N2billion.

“Am happy to inform you that our Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) equipment is working and our CT scan is also working, barring some little technical problems. So, these two equipments are crucial to accurate diagnosing in many disease conditions and that is another reason why our people fly out to other countries for diagnosing and subsequent treatment,” said Ofiaeli.

Jongid said that Nigerian doctors can hold their own if necessary equipment are provided for them, he commended Prof Ofiaeli and his team for their commitment to ensuring the success of the surgery.
