    • Retreat, roundtable for May 9-11 in Ibadan

The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) has said Nigeria’s tourism sector remains vastly untapped and should be further harnessed.

The Chairman, Ozofu Ogiemudia, stressed that natural and cultural assets ranging from scenic rock formations to heritage sites are underutilised resources that could significantly boost the economy if properly harnessed.

“Most of these sites are natural gates that can attract both domestic and international visitors. We need deliberate policies and investments to unlock this potential,” she stated.

Ogiemudia spoke at a briefing in Lagos on its forthcoming Tourism Retreat and Roundtable in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, from May 9-11, 2025.

Organised by the NBA-SBL Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Committee, its theme is: “Repositioning Nigeria’s tourism & hospitality from seasonal hype to sustainable prosperity.”

Ogiemudia believes that investment in key sites such as Olumo Rock and heritage relics in Badagry can generate significant revenue if properly maintained and promoted.

“If every state recognises tourism as a vital revenue source and invests accordingly, Nigeria’s tourism industry can become a major economic engine,” she said.

She said NBA-SBL’s legal team is actively reviewing existing laws affecting tourism, with plans to collaborate with government agencies to craft policies that facilitate investment and sustainability.

“Our association has a strong track record of engaging with policymakers to develop supportive legal frameworks. We are committed to ensuring Nigeria’s tourism potential is fully realised,” Ogiemudia said.

Ogiemudia added that perceptions of the sector’s decline are misplaced, asserting that tourism is more untapped than dying.

She said the upcoming retreat will gather stakeholders from the government, the private sector, and civil society to explore strategies for making tourism a sustainable, year-round industry.

Chairperson of the NBA-SBL Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Committee, Chinenye Oragwu, highlighted the importance of legal reforms and policy support in fostering sector growth.

“Our goal is to develop a comprehensive framework that encourages private sector investment, community involvement, and government backing to ensure tourism becomes a continuous driver of economic prosperity,” she explained.

In line with the theme, the retreat will feature site visits to Ibadan’s Olubadan Palace, Heritage Museum, and other cultural landmarks, providing participants with firsthand insights into Nigeria’s rich history.

A key feature will be a roundtable discussion involving notable experts, including the Director-General of the National Council of Arts and Culture, Obi Asika.

Chair of the Planning Committee, Pamileri Akabunwa, added that the event would facilitate strategic partnerships and stakeholder engagement.

“We want to inspire both reflection and action, pushing Nigeria to become a leading destination for tourists all year round,” she said.

Oragwu noted increased awareness among Nigerians, with more groups promoting local tourism sites.

“With continuous dialogue, investment, and community participation, Nigeria’s tourism sector can reach new heights,” she concluded.

  • NBA-SBL launches banking, finance academy for young lawyers

The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL), in partnership with International Lawyers For Africa (ILFA), has launched the Banking and Finance Academy.

It is designed to help young lawyers hone their skills and expertise in the field of banking and finance law.

Speaking at the event which took place in Lagos, NBA-SBL Chairman  Mr. Seni Adio (SAN) said the initiative was in line with the Section’s objectives to build capacity for Nigerian lawyers across various specialisations and sectors of the economy.

He said: “The programme is made up of practical and interactive modules, with a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of banking and finance law and will thus keep young lawyers in tune with the modern practice of law as it relates to banking and finance.

“As business lawyers, it is important to enhance the capacity of our young lawyers in the area of commercial law practice, to ensure they become specialists and not just generalists,” Adio stated

The academy opened with a three-day specialised training for over a 100 young Nigerian lawyers with interests in banking and finance practice.

The Chairman of the NBA-SBL Banking and Finance committee, Dr Tominiyi Owolabi, made a case for legal expertise in banking and financing processes, stating that, there was need to ensure the younger generation of lawyers in Nigeria was equipped with the requisite skills for purposes of financing.

“The market involves massive structuring skills, and the panacea for these projects are foreign lenders. We do recognise the gaps in our training system and note that the average young lawyer does not having the key exposure or the sophistication in financing which the “market” requires,” he said.

In her remarks, ILFA’s executive director, Cynthia Lareine expressed excitement at the collaboration with the NBA-SBL, stating that both organisations have had a long and rich history of partnerships, with Nigerian lawyers being the largest beneficiaries of all ILFA programmes within African jurisdictions. According to her, these benefits, include, internships and programmes for secondment.

She said: “When my predecessor sought to launch the Intra Africa secondment programme in 2016, it was to Nigeria that she initially looked and we had six Nigerian law firms hosting lawyers from various West Africa jurisdictions. We have hopes of replicating this programme in future.

“I am personally very excited about the Academy and about our blossoming relationship with the NBA-SBL which also extends to our online legal education platform called Angaza Africa law training.

“The partnership model we have with the NBA-SBL is a template for what we want to achieve in other parts of Africa. I believe that through relationships like this one ILFA really is well positioned to build legal excellence & strengthen the rule of law and across Africa

She stated that: “Indeed Nigeria has traditionally been the largest beneficiary of all the African jurisdictions involved in ILFA in terms of numbers of lawyers placed on secondments.

“When my predecessor sought to launch the Intra Africa secondment programme in 2016, it was to Nigeria that she initially looked and we had six  Nigerian law firms hosting lawyers from various West Africa jurisdictions. We have hopes of replicating this programme in future.

“Hopefully most of those in this room have some knowledge of ILFA’s work. However for those who don’t know the history, ILFA was founded in 2007 by Tim Taylor, QC. A partner @ King Wood and Mallesons now based in Dubai but at the time practising in London.

“The vision at inception was what Tim referred to as ‘enlightened self-interest’  Tim saw an opportunity to facilitate the growth and  professional development of lawyers across Africa through the practice of secondment schemes.

“Simply put the programme would see the leading international law firms in London, Paris and eventually Dubai providing a fully sponsored three-month secondment to promising young African lawyers. As well as the secondment, these lawyers would benefit from a curriculum of technical legal training relevant to the African market.

Through extensive networking and relationship building activities secondees expand their perspectives on their work, the legal industry and on global issues facing Africa.

“The beauty of the international secondment programme is that as well as being beneficial to the individual lawyers who participate in these secondments, the programme also enables Africa focussed law firms to establish, develop and strengthen rich relationships with leading lawyers in Africa.

“Fast forward 12 years and hundreds of African rising legal stars have participated in and benefitted from the ILFA secondment programme. Some of those who have benefitted are sitting in this room with us this morning and can no doubt attest to how significant and valuable the experience has been in relation to their individual professional development.

Whilst the secondment programme continues to be an important part of the work that ILFA does, ILFA has evolved since 2007. We now run 5 programmes (including an ILFA internship programme).

“I took over the leadership of ILFA last year and one of the key objectives for myself and the ILFA board is to extend ILFA’s reach and to deepen ILFA’s roots across Africa.

“The secondments by their nature will only ever impact a handful of lawyers, so the challenge ahead for ILFA and for other organisations involved in Africa capacity building is to find ways of engaging with and having greater direct impact on skills development for many more lawyers whilst doing so in a manner that is sustainable and meaningful.

“The ILFA Legal Excellence Academy is one of the means we’ve identified to achieving this. The idea is simply that in partnership with local law societies and bar associations across Africa, ILFA can collaborate with international law firms and local lawyers to deliver classroom style teaching on a variety of topics to candidates who apply and are selected to attend.

“I am personally very excited about the Academy and about our blossoming relationship with the NBA-SBL which also extends to our online legal education platform called Angaza Africa law training.

“The partnership model we have with the NBA-SBL is a template for what we want to achieve in other parts of Africa. I believe that through relationships like this one ILFA really is well positioned to build legal excellence & strengthen the rule of law and across Africa,” Lareine added.

  • NBA-SBL inaugurates club

The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) has inaugurated the first ‘SBL CLUB’ at the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka.

The initiative is part of the section’s objectives to build capacity and promote the development of commercial law practice in Nigeria.

At the event were the faculty’s Dean, law professors, members of the NBA-SBL Council, Committee Chairpersons, members of the ADR Committee of the NBA-SBL, executives of the UNILAG Law Students Society (LSS), amongst others.

It is the first in a series of clubs being set up in selected universities across the country.

NBA-SBL Young Lawyers’ Committee Chairperson, Olubukola Olabiyi,  said the Section had keen interest in the development of the legal capacity of law students.

She said: ”It is hoped that through the Young Lawyers Committee of the NBA-SBL, we would facilitate this development by way of mentorship and internship initiatives as well as invitations to SBL committee programmes focused on various areas of specialisation.

“We appreciate the interest and assistance of the UNILAG Faculty of Law and Law Students’ Society in establishing this Club in their institution and look forward to achieving note worthy progress at the UNILAG and other tertiary institutions.”

SBL Chairman Mr Olumide Akpata expressed delight at the final takeoff of the first SBL club.

“The SBL Club is primarily aimed at  introducing Law Undergraduates to contemporary issues in  Commercial Law and Practice that may not yet form part of their curricula but are a ‘must have’ if they are to effectively compete on the global stage as Law Students and ultimately, in the future,  as Commercial Law Practitioners.

The Dean, Prof Ayo Asenuwa, welcomed the initiative, expressing faith in the students’ ability to utilise the opportunity.

“We are happy that you have considered our faculty for the very first of this capacity building project and we pledge the support of the management to ensure the success of this laudable initiative,” she said.

Vice President of the Law Students Society, Ms. Oluwatamilore Sowunmi thanked the Council of the NBA-SBL for the initiative.

After the inauguration, a special ADR session was held by the NBA-SBL committee on Arbitration & ADR, for the benefit of the students.

Chair, Advisory Board of the Lagos Court of Arbitration – Young Arbitrators Network (LCA-YAN), Mr Isaiah Bozimo,  introduced the students to the practice of ADR.

He highlighted issues such as the nature of arbitrable disputes; arbitration as a mechanism for dispute settlement; the consensual nature of arbitration; arbitration as a private procedure; the legal framework governing international commercial arbitration; and the fact that arbitration leads to a final and binding determination of the rights and obligations of the parties involved.

Another member of the ADR Committee, Mrs Josephine Akinwunmi, spoke to the LSS audience about the benefits of ADR, the core principles of mediation, the role of a mediator, key attributes of an effective mediator, benefits of mediation, obstacles to a successful mediation, the goals of mediation, ethical guidelines for mediators and mediation institutions.

According to her, disputes were generally an inevitable part of human interactions arising from different human transactions including economic activities, family relationships, community, neighbourhood and other civil activities.

“When these disputes arise, it is only natural that the parties will want to resolve them peacefully and the common method of doing so without going to court is to go through the Alternative Dispute Resolution process. The one thing all disputes share is that ultimately they involve people and people involve relationships,” Akinwunmi said, while harping on the importance of maintaining good relations in the resolution of disputes and the need to achieve this through mediation.

The CEDR (UK) Accredited Mediator and SCMA Accredited, Mediation Advocacy Trainer, went on to school them about the attributes of a good mediator; listing those to include, credibility, patience and tact, objectivity alertness, adaptability, perseverance, appearance, demeanor, amongst other things.

“In addition, the NBA-SBL will provide pro bono (free) legal support and expertise to the CAC and PEBEC/EBES in the legislative review of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) and other legislations, as well as legislative advocacy at the National Assembly,” he said.

Akpata said the section is also collaborating with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) and the National Assembly (NASS), through a working group called the National Assembly Business Environment Roundtable (NASSBER), which seeks to review all laws that affect business in Nigeria with a view to promoting the ease of doing Business.

He said NASSBER was founded as a result of the ongoing collaboration between the National Assembly, the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), the UK Department for International Development (DFID) through two of its developmental programs, namely, ENABLE II and GEMS 3, and the NBA-SBL.

He described NASSBER as  a legislative/private sector initiative established to develop a framework for the improvement of the economic and business environment in Nigeria and, in particular, through law reform.

Its objectives, he said, are facilitating and implementing legislative reform and, with respect to enhancing the ease of doing business in Nigeria, providing a platform for engagement and consultation with key stakeholders; proffering solutions/recommendations for enhancing the competiveness of “Made-in-Nigeria”; and advocating for the diversification of the Nigerian economy.

He said NBA-SBL also nominated lawyers into the CAC  ‘Mystery Shoppers’ as part of the partnership with PEBEC

“As part of its collaboration with PEBEC, the Council of the NBA-SBL, working with the EBES has nominated 10 lawyers designated to be Mystery Shoppers. The  Committee was inaugurated in March in Abuja.

“The CAC mystery shoppers are saddled with the responsibility of testing, mystery shopping & reporting the implementation of all CAC reforms.

“In line with its vision to promote and enhance business practices in Nigeria, the SBL agreed to support the EBES to ensure a favourable business environment.

“The SBL has an existing partnership with the CAC following the establishment of an SBL-CAC Joint Working Committee in 2016.

“Recent reforms at the CAC include: online upload of registration documents; improved reliability of CAC online portal (including uptime to 99 per cent); consolidation of incorporation documents from seven to one and integration FIRS e-payment solution into CAC online portal,” Akpata said.
