DG NSC decries unresolved litigation in NBBF

The Director-General, National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Alhassan Yakmut has expressed displeasure over the unsettled litigation at the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) for almost a year and urged the basketball family to work towards its resolution.

According him, “having a case in court for a year is a disservice to Nigerian youths who are eager to play the game.  I think the game of basketball should be restricted to the basketball court and not the conventional court”.

Yakmut who presided over the meeting called for the reconciliation of the warring factions in Abuja today, noted that despite the absence of some board members at the meeting, parties have agreed to abide by decisions reached at the meeting through the apologies they sent.

He also noted the haphazard manner in which non-governmental organisations, and some federations juxtapose programmes without confirming if such events were in the sporting itinerary of the federations for the year.

The Director-General therefore directed the Director, Federation of Elite Athletes Department (FEAD) to develop checklists for the federations, which would be subjected to amendment depending on the timeline of such events.

He further directed that sponsors and NGOs be allowed unfettered access to such checklists to ensure adherence and follow-up.

The Director General disclosed that the essence of ensuring that the basketball family is on the same page is to ensure that Nigerian youths are given the opportunity to showcase their talents and excel in the game.  He recalled that the highest Nigerian paid sports person is an American-based basketball player.

Yakmut mandated all federations to ensure that all board members be carried along in all activities, while urging them to develop an e-communication system where every member could easily be reached at short notice.

In his response, the President of the NBBF, Tijani Umar commended the efforts of the Director General in bringing board members together for the benefit of the game and youths.  He assured that every board member would be given their due as stipulated in the guidelines.

Basketball Clinic: NBBF partners Oguche in developing stars

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has concluded plans to partners Samuel Oguche in organising this year’s edition of the basketball summer camp billed to take place in Abuja in May.

The NBBF grass root development manager, Skambo Morrison who disclosed this in Abuja also said that the program will be used as part of their initiative to reach the grass root nationwide. He noted that NBBF will be giving technical support to the forth-coming annual youth Basketball Camp which is billed for Abuja.

The famed summer basketball camp for youths which has been held in many cities across the world since 2007, is scheduled to commence on May 18th to 22nd in Abuja.

Oguche hinted that all arrangements have been made by the foundation to ensure a hitch-free camp.

“This year’s camp will feature exposure to the rudiments of basketball and basketball drilling to be handled by experienced and national team coaches with world class training facilities; motivational speeches by successful individuals and sports icons as well as career talk and mentoring on having successful sporting and non-sporting careers,”he disclosed.

He noted that Greg Brown a resource person from United State of America (USA) and Lanre Awolabi a respected administrator from United Kingdom (UK) will grace the occasion. He also said top local coaches like Adeka Daudu and others will also be available to guide the participating youths.

Oguche commended the media for supporting his foundation’s lofty ambition of making positive impact in the lives of the Nigerian youths.

The Annual Samuel Oguche Basketball Camp is one of the foundation’s initiatives used in empowering and helping the youths to create a brighter future. It instills habit of hard work and also stimulates youths’ interest in participating in sports, particularly basketball for recreation and as a profession instead of taking to crime.

The competition at which 26 secondary schools participated in held at Avi Cenna International School, Ikeja, Lagos.

The federation is committed to supporting grassroots programmes of this nature and we hope more of this can be sponsored by other private individuals and groups,’’ Bakare said.

Multichoice satisfied with involvement in basketball league

Multichoice Nig Ltd., sponsors of the DStv Men’s Basketball Premier League, on Tuesday said that it was satisfied to be involved in Nigeria’s Basketball League.

Martins Mabutho, the Head of Marketing and Sales, Multichoice, made the statement at a news conference in Lagos to herald the commencement of the 2013-2014 season. He said Multichoice renewed its sponsorship rights with the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) with vigour, adding that it remained committed to the league.

Mabutho said the renewal of the right in 2013 was to continue to develop the sport in Nigeria and Africa. He noted that the company signed a three-year sponsorship for the 2013 to 2016 seasons.

“The sponsorship, which is valued at several millions of dollars, was to be utilised for many projects by the NBBF. These include management of the league, technical development, marketing and promotion as well as running of the secretariat,’’ he said.

Mabutho, however, said that the renewal of the sponsorship rights was not targeted at brand visibility.

“Our support for the game is hinged on the belief that basketball is on its way to becoming a nationally recognised sport. We also decided to renew the sponsorship because of our love for and toward the growth and development of basketball.

“Basketball is not just a sport; it is a lifestyle activity that promotes unity among youths; it builds determination and passion, and it is a game which, if well focused on, can empower the youth,’’ he said.

The NBBF President, Tijani Umar, said at the conference that Oluyole Warriors of Ibadan and Police Baton of Lagos would kick-start the season with a ceremonial match on February 28.

Umar added that matches would continue on March 7 across the various centres in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Gombe and Kwara.

“We are happy to be back for a new season which promises to be great and very entertaining. We thank our partners and sponsors, the DStv/Multichoice for unflinching support,’’ he said.

According to Umar, the newly inaugurated league committee will ensure proper registration of players.

He said the committee would also ensure that only licensed players and teams would feature in the league.

“We will be strict against indiscipline and will not allow unlicensed teams or players to feature ,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the eight teams each in the Atlantic and the Savannah Conferences will play 14 matches each in the regular season.

The first four teams in the two conferences will feature in the Final Eight in Lagos at a yet-to-be decided date. The best two teams at the Final Eight will represent Nigeria in the Continental Club Championship.

    All-Stars players threaten demonstration

All-Stars players of the Men’s DStv/Basketball League on Tuesday threatened to embark on a peaceful demonstration for the payments of their 2013 All-Star Conference final prize money played in September in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the final was between two All-Stars teams of the Savannah and the Atlantic Conferences which signalled the end of the season.

The Atlantic All-Stars which narrowly defeated Savannah All-Stars 104-103 at the final won N1 million prize money, while Savannah won N500,000. The players, however, told NAN in Lagos that up till now, the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) had yet to redeem the prize money.

“The federation has sidelined us and has refused to pay us our allowances,’’ the players said.

Hillary Aighokhaode of the Atlantic Conference said that it has been a waiting game for the money they were owed and something has to be done.

“It has been a waiting game, we have only heard promises and this is why we will embark on a peaceful demonstration before the coming jump-ball-date on Feb. 28,’’ he said.

Obum Onyia also of the Atlantic said the situation was pathetic and that NBBF had completely forgotten them.

“The NBBF has definitely paid the musicians that entertained them on that day and totally did not take the players seriously. We are the players that played the game, how do we go about paying our rents and personal dues when we cannot receive what we are owed?’’ Onyia wondered.

Azoma Dike, who also stars for the Atlantic, described the situation as unfair, adding that NBBF should consider them and pay the debt.

“They keep promising and not fulfilling their promises, this is not fair. We are the ones that matter as regards the game, and hence, we should be treated fairly. I won the Most Valuable Player award and it goes with a N250, 000 cash prize. But till date, I have yet to receive the award and the allowances,’’ he said.

Abubakar Usman, who plays in the Savannah team, said the NBBF should understand their plight as players.

“We are imploring them to understand that we went through a lot to be in Lagos for the match, some of us borrowed money to be present for the match,” he said.

Timothy Kwanor of Savannah who won the Three-Point-Shot Award of N100,000 also expressed dissatisfaction and urged the NBBF to consider them.

“The match was held since September last year, even if they are not yet ready, then they should communicate properly to us. They just left us chasing them,’’ Kwanor said.

Contributing, Tony Thomas, an ex-player and member, Basketball Professional Association of Nigeria (BAPAN), said that the players were right to fight for their entitlements.

“We had wanted to stage a lock-out sometimes last season due to many issues coming up, but the players said they could cope with their challenges then. However, with this development and other issues which had been untouched for long, there is a tendency for peaceful demonstration before the jump-ball-date.

“The federation needs to have the concerns of the players as their responsibilities, but in a situation when this does not happen then there is tendency to be chaos,’’ Thomas added.

The players, however, did not disclose to NAN when they would stage the demonstration.

SuperSport GM urges club owners to do more marketing

The General Manager, DStv/SuperSport, West Africa, Felix Awogu, on Tuesday urged clubs participating in the 2013/ 2014 DSTV/Men’s Basketball League to take advantage of the satellite broadcast to market their clubs.

Awogu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the 16 clubs participating in the league should use the platform to source for funds.

NAN reports that DStv/SuperSport, the sponsors of Nigeria’s Men Elite Basketball League, upwardly reviewed a four-year contract with the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) from N150 million to N218 million from 2013 to 2016.

The league features 16 clubs – eight clubs from each of the Savannah and Atlantic conferences.

“The basketball matches are broadcast on our cable channel, and we have millions of viewers throughout Africa. The clubs have the right to market themselves, most especially by their jerseys bearing the names of their sponsors.

“They can also take advantage of their home games, collect gate fees and create avenues that will bring more fans to come and watch their games. They should be business-oriented and should not expect us to do everything for them,’’ Awogu said.

According to him, in the previous season, Dodan Warriors of Lagos brought more value to themselves with jersey sponsorship.

“Dodan Warriors, in the last season had sponsors of its jersey. We also heard they had some foreign connections that were interested in promoting them. Club owners should be busy doing business with their franchise because they also play a key role in developing the league and investing in young talents,’’ he said.
