    Ayefele charges NBC on license to radio station owners

    The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Fresh FM Nigeria, Dr. Yinka Ayefele, has charged the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to wake up to its responsibility on issuance of broadcasting license to owners of radio stations across Nigeria.

    He said the step became necessary to sanitise broadcasting industry, which according to him has been saturated, particularly in Ibadan.

    Speaking at a briefing to commence the 10th anniversary of Fresh FM Nigeria, Ayefele said issuance of broadcasting license to owners of radio stations must follow due process, rules and regulations guiding the broadcasting industry.

    He stated that the Commission must monitor to maintain professionalism and proper conduct of operators of the radio stations.

    He recounted the rigours he went through to secure his first license, noting that the process made him appreciate and cherish the licence more.

    According to him: “I want to urge NBC to be up and doing in their responsibility, obtaining broadcasting license has been polarized, in fact, it has gotten to a stage that license is now being sold on Facebook.

    “NBC need to do more because broadcasting and ownership of radio stations has now been polarized and saturated, most especially in Ibadan.”

    He however said his vision is to change the face of broadcasting, and for his radio stations to be a choice and role model to other radio stations.

    Assistant Director, NBC, Ibadan zonal office, Alhaja Sherifat Koro, who spoke on behalf of NBC Zonal Director, Jude Ajayi, said NBC was happy to associate with Fresh FM, describing the station as a tree planted, nurtured, and seeing growing and now have many branches.

    She urged the station to continue doing its best in ditching out quality programmes to its listeners and adhered to the rules and regulations guiding broadcasting.

    Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, Dr. Suleiman Olanrewaju, said the 10th anniversary of Fresh FM is an indication of dedication, resilient, and positive impact of the station.

    He lauded the station for changing the story of radio programing, describing Ayefele as a good talent manager.

    Group Managing General Manager of Fresh FM, Nigeria, Alhaji Abolade Salami described the 10th anniversary as a remarkable event.

    He lauded the dedication, determination and collective input of staff of the station for making the event a successful one.

    Nigerian Bottling Company has reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment, industrial leadership, and socioeconomic development with release of a documentary spotlighting its renowned Supply Chain Academy (SCA).

    The documentary: “Powering Potential: Inside NBC’s Supply Chain Academy,” takes viewers inside the heart of NBC’s technical training institution and chronicles its transformation into a hub for developing the next generation of leaders in manufacturing and supply chain sectors.

    The documentary features testimonials from graduates, trainers, and senior leaders who share how the academy shaped careers, uplifted families, and aid development.

    Jolomi Fawehinmi, NBC’s People & Culture director, said the academy’s curriculum was designed to equip trainees with tech and leadership skills.

    Fawehinmi noted that the academy offers immersive classroom training with hands-on learning experiences with intakes undergoing onboarding programme, practical sessions on mini production lines, and training in simulated environments, including driver simulators and safety behaviour modules.

    Fawehinmi noted that the academy’s curriculum equips trainees with technical expertise and leadership acumen.

    She emphasized that the academy offers an immersive blend of classroom instruction and hands-on experience. New trainees participate in comprehensive onboarding programs, practical sessions on mini production lines, and training in simulated environments, such as driver simulators and safety behavior modules.

    She added that the trainees also benefit from access to on-site facilities such as a clinic, a canteen, a library, and a digital learning lab. She described the training as a representation of how the company was investing and empowering young talents to become professionals and leaders of tomorrow.

    Also commenting on the documentary, Idehen Misan Ilesanmi, the Supply Chain Capability Development Manager at Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (NBC), emphasized that thecompany’s goal is to develop trainees to the level where they can meet global leadership and technical standards.

    “We are not just teaching them how to do a job but helping them grow into industry problem-solvers and innovators. I see the academy becoming even bigger, led by a team committed to transferring knowledge, experience, and excellence,” Ilesanmisaid.

    She stated that the technical training center remains the cornerstone of developing a highly skilled and adaptable workforce, adding that it is a testament to the company’s commitment to excellence.

    One of the trainees, Qadri Oluwatobiloba, expressed profound gratitude to NBC for the invaluable experience gained, noting that the education provided surpassed all expectations. “Having been here for 9 months, I can affirm that the training and learning have been immensely transformative,” he added.

    Another trainee who has since transited to a full-time employee, Blessing Eze, said the initiative provides trainees with the opportunity to learn with seamless transition from one function to another in the company.

    The film is now available on NBC’s official YouTube channel (@nigerianbottlingcompany) and website and will be screened at select industry events and tertiary institutions nationwide as part of NBC’s youth engagement initiative.

    Since its inception in 1996, the technical training school has made significant strides, with alumni seamlessly transitioning into full-time roles and contributing meaningfully across various departments. Their impact extends not only within NBC but also across several companies in the manufacturing industry.

    The NBC Supply Cain Academy has now evolved into a full-fledged learning and development Centre that cuts across planning, procurement, production, and logistics. Today, it serves as a strategic pillar in NBC’s commitment to developing a highly skilled, adaptable, and leadership-ready workforce.

    The Mushin Local Government Area (LGA) has taken a significant step towards enhancing local media and community engagement with the launch of its new broadcasting station. The station, which will operate on Isokan 106.7 FM, was recently inspected by directors from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), marking a crucial milestone in its development.

    Chairman of Mushin Local Government Emmanuel Bamigboye, expressed delight at the NBC directors’ visit, highlighting the importance of this initiative for the local community.

     “We are very delighted to see the NBC representatives here. This is just the starting point. We’re doing something, and the people in charge are committed to ensuring we follow due process and start as soon as possible,” he said.

    Bamigboye emphasised the potential of the broadcasting station to generate revenue, create employment opportunities, and support developmental projects within the local government.

    The NBC Lagos Director, Charles Ebuebu, expressed his admiration for the facilities and equipment installed at the broadcasting station.

    The director also presented the National Broadcasting Code to the chairman, outlining guidelines for various aspects of broadcasting, including news coverage, religious, and political content. He encouraged the local community to utilise the station as a platform to share their thoughts and opinions.

    In commemoration of World Water Day 2025, Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), a member of Coca-Cola HBC (CCHBC) and the bottling partner of The Coca-Cola Company and Quality Foods Africa, operator of Dodo Pizza, Krispy Kreme, Scoop’d Ice Cream and Burger Nation, have reinforced their commitment to water stewardship and environmental sustainability across Nigeria.

    World Water Day, observed annually on March 22, is a United Nations initiative to spotlight the importance of freshwater and advocate for sustainable water management.

    The 2025 theme: “Glacier Preservation,” underscores the critical role of glaciers in sustaining life and maintaining the global water cycle

    According to Oluwasoromidayo George, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director at NBC, the company marked the occasion with initiatives across several states, engaging communities, environmental advocates, and stakeholders to promote water conservation.

    “Water is life—it sustains people, communities, and ecosystems. As the main ingredient in our products, we take our responsibility seriously by using it efficiently, treating it responsibly, and ensuring safe water returns to the communities we serve.

    Our World Water Day initiatives reflect this unwavering commitment,” George stated.

    She explained that NBC’s activities spanned multiple locations, including Maiduguri, Kano, Lagos, Abuja, Asejire, Owerri, and Benin, focusing on water security, waterway and coastal protection, and community empowerment through sustainable actions.

    A major highlight of this year’s activities was the clean-up exercise at Elegushi Beach, Lagos, organized in partnership with Quality Foods Africa (QFA), franchisors of loved brands like Dodo Pizza and Krispy Kreme, as well as homegrown brands such as Scoop’d and Burger Nation. Employees of NBC and QFA, along with volunteers and environmental advocates, participated in removing plastic waste and pollutants, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to cleaner coastlines.

    On March 21, NBC conducted an awareness session at Amakohia Primary School, Owerri, educating students and teachers on the importance of water conservation.

    On March 22, the company embarked on a sensitisation drive at Kuchigoro Community, Abuja, which included a WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) awareness campaign to enhance community water access and hygiene standards.

    The activities culminated with a water conservation awareness walk in Owerri on March 25, further amplifying messages on sustainable water management.

    Through these initiatives, NBC continues to lead by example in water conservation and environmental sustainability, reaffirming its role as a responsible corporate leader dedicated to a water-secure future.

    The Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), a member of Coca-Cola HBC (CCHBC) and the bottling partner of The Coca-Cola Company, has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability by advancing its circular packaging strategy.

    This is in celebration of the Global Recycling Day, which is observed annually on March 18.

    It raises awareness of the critical role of recycling in preserving the planet.

    Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director, Nigerian Bottling Company, Oluwasoromidayo George, highlighted NBC’s ongoing efforts to build a more sustainable future through impactful initiatives.

    “As part of our commitment to environmental stewardship, we recently commissioned a state-of-the-art Packaging Collection Hub in Apapa, Lagos.

    “This landmark facility is a gamechanger in Nigeria’s plastics recycling landscape and will contribute towards addressing the global challenge of single-use plastics and packaging waste,” she said.

    She noted that with an annual capacity to process up to 13,000 metric tonnes of plastic bottles, the NBC System Packaging Collection Hub serves as a comprehensive solution for plastic waste management.

    “The hub facilitates PET collection, processes materials into clean PET bottles, and supports rPET production through strategic partnerships—advancing cleaner communities and a circular economy.

    To further drive awareness and mobilize collective action, NBC has sponsored a documentary, it is more than just a visual narrative; it is a call to action for communities, stakeholders, and industry leaders to join us in rethinking waste and embracing sustainable solutions,” she added.

    Double taxation: IBAN threatens to sue NBC

    The Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (IBAN) has threatened to drag the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to court over the 2.5 percent levy gross at source, Digital Switch Over (DSO), and amendment of the gross to net among other issues.

    This is contained in a statement issued by the new Chairman of the IBAN (Dr) Ahmed Tijjani Ramalan.

     According to him, the decision was agreed upon at the just concluded IBAN Emergency Extra-Ordinary General Meeting held on Friday 30th August 2024, and formed part of its Communique.

    Ramalan said: “Regarding the issue of the DSO take off and the controversial 2.5% levy at source being demanded by National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) from broadcasters, IBAN resolved that the DG of NBC and the Honourable Minister for Information and National Orientation Muhammed Idris  should be approached for an urgent meeting to resolve the DSO issue with set-top manufacturers and IBAN’s members request for ‘waiver’ and the urgent need to review the NBC code by all stakeholders to amend the ‘Gross’  to ‘NET of incomes and other issues of disagreements.’”

    He added “The meeting also agreed that the DG NBC be informed of the intricacies of his recent actions in view of the economic situations in the country as a result of government policies after which IBAN will approach the law courts challenging the action which is seen as double taxation and legality of the NBC Code which is in conflict with the Nigerian Constitution”.

    Elected by consensus as Executive Council Members of IBAN at the emergency meeting along with Ramalan as Chairman, are: Tony Dara; Vice Chairman, Charles Maraizu Daniels; General Secretary, Kadaria Ahmed; Treasurer, Greg Odutayo; Publicity Secretary.

    The Director General  of National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Charles Ebuebu has commended  the innovation and excellence of  SLTV, indigenous Nigerian satellite pay television.

    He ssured of equal opportunities for all players  in  the broadcast industry to ensure competitive service delivery.

    He gave the commendation when Dr Ifeanyi Nwafor, Managing Director, Metrodigital Limited, operator of SLTV, and his management team paid him a courtesy visit  at NBC Headquarters in Abuja.

    The team comprises of senior officials and partners of Metrodigital, including Hon.Princess  Nikky Onyeri, Chief Operating Officer of  Camroll Quest Ltd.

    The visit was to brief the regulatory body on SLTv’s content offerings and innovations as well as efforts in ensuring quality and affordable service delivery to subscribers.

    According to Ebuebu, as the nation witnessed the launch of the SLTV  earlier in the year, the broadcast industry  and subscribers  are looking  forward to experiencing the values it promises.

    He lauded the brand’s commitment to innovation and excellence, and therefore pledged the commission’s unbiased stance in ensuring that innovation and competition   thrive   in the broadcast industry.

    “As a regulator, one of our mandates is to encourage competition in the broadcast sector that brings innovation, allows local players to thrive and to build an economy around the broadcast sector.

     “So we are very excited to have SLTV come in as a player in that space with its innovation and brand.

    “In compliance with the rules of the NBC, we will definitely support them in the effort to bring new innovation as a local player in that space.

     “What the NBC can do and will do is to establish a level playing field for all players, there is not going to be discrimination, where you have a major player with different rules.

    “We are going to put a level playing field so that price will come to play, and   whatever  features you bring , that will be an edge for  competition rather than a dominant position.

     “As we speak, we are reviewing our rules and regulations in that space and we are bringing up policies that will open up the industry, allow innovation, services and features to thrive,” he said.

    The NBC helmsman, who received the visitors in company of his management team, said the commission would be conducting an inspection visit to SLTV office as part of its regulatory functions.

     He said the visit was to obtain first-hand information on the newly launched project, assess its operations, and ensure compliance with Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

    Nwafor expressed appreciation  to NBC for opening space for other players to come into the industry, which was fostering competition and innovation.

    “I have to thank the Federal Government and NBC for the effort they made over the last few years to put regulations in place to end the monopolistic practices of the dominant players.

    He added that “It is based on those amendments and those new regulations that we are able to emerge and have a chance to play in this industry.

     “We believe that the Nigerian market is very big and we believe that our people can do a whole lot and there is a big opportunity for any person that wants to participate in the industry.

    “I want to thank NBC for dealing with some of the issues that have held the industry down for a very long time, and  I believe this is the dawn of a new age,  that going forward, we are going to see a lot of innovation  and more players coming into the industry to become more vibrant.

    “In due course,  same way our music and  movies industries are making waves all over the world, our broadcast industry will also do , not just in Nigeria but all over the world,” he said.

    Nwafor explained SLTV has 54HD channels with several sport channels that show live football matches from the Premier League, Champions League, La Liga, Seria A, and UEL among others, with a monthly subscription ranging from N2,5000 and N5,000.

    He .explained further  as part of its commitment to local content, 11 channels out of the 54 on SLTV were dedicated to local contents, which  satisfies the 20 percent  local content requirement by the law.
