NBM of Africa lauds efforts, calls for bolder actions against insecurity

Neo Black Movement (NBM) of Africa in Lekki Chapter, has lauded rescue of abducted Nigerians, describing the operation as a welcome development and a demonstration of what is possible when government and security agencies act with urgency and determination.

However, the movement stressed that the severity of insecurity nationwide demands a more coordinated, sustained, and aggressive response to protect lives vulnerable to kidnappings, terrorism, banditry, and other violent crimes.

Erauyi Agbon-Ifo, President, Neo Black Movement of Africa, Lekki Branch, noted that the rescue has rekindled hope among citizens, many of who have endured fear, trauma, and repeated attacks.

“We commend President Bola Tinubu and our security agencies for securing release of abducted citizens. This shows that with the right commitment, coordination, and political will, we can win the fight against insecurity,” he said.

Despite this progress, he emphasised that the country requires more than isolated interventions to reverse violence. He called for all Service chiefs, inspector general of Police, Civil Defence Corps, and all security formations to act as one force with shared intelligence, shared responsibility, and a mandate to dismantle crime networks.

The group also urged Lagos State to heighten its internal security operations, especially in major business districts, residential communities, transportation hubs, and border entry points. Agbon-Ifo noted that as the nation’s economic epicenter and most densely populated state, Lagos must strengthen surveillance, community policing, and rapid-response systems to deter criminals and reassure residents.

He said improved collaboration between state, security agencies, and community will curb localised crime as the year ends.

As the Yuletide season approaches, a period historically associated with increased movement and higher criminal activity, the Movement appealed to Lagosians and all Nigerians to remain vigilant and prioritize their personal and community safety. According to Agbon-Ifo, “Security is a collective responsibility. We encourage citizens to be alert, support local authorities, and report suspicious activities immediately.”

Reaffirming its commitment to peace and national stability, the Neo Black Movement of Africa, Lekki Chapter pledged continued support to the government through advocacy, community engagement, and sensitization programmes aimed at promoting unity and security across the country.

Agbon-Ifo concluded by stating, “Nigeria cannot thrive under constant threats. This is the time for bold, united action by government, security institutions, and the people to secure the future of our nation.”

The Neo Black Movement of Africa, Lekki Chapter, extends its warm wishes to all Nigerians for a peaceful, joyful, and safe Yuletide season.

Court serves Form 48 on NBM members over alleged contempt

The High Court of Imo State has issued Form 48: Notice of Consequences of Disobedience to Court Order to several prominent members of the Neo Black Movement (NBM) of Africa for allegedly defying a valid court order.

The court action comes on the heels of a controversial parallel convention reportedly held last weekend by a faction of expelled members of the NBM in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State and Lekki Lagos State despite a standing interim injunction barring such gatherings pending the determination of a substantive suit.

The restraining order was earlier granted on July 25, 2025, by Hon. Justice Mike Onyekachi of the Ahiazu-Mbaise Judicial Division, following an ex parte application brought by the Registered Trustees of NBM of Africa, alongside Olorogun Ese Kakor and Zonal Coordinator Kechi Opara. The suit, marked HAM/156/2025, sought to halt the factional activity threatening the unity and legal integrity of the movement.

However, in defiance of the court’s directive, some individuals allegedly proceeded with the disputed event. As a result, the court invoked Form 48, a statutory notice warning of the grave consequences of contempt of court.

“Take notice that unless you obey the directives of this court contained in the said order, you shall be guilty of contempt and liable to be committed to prison,” the Form 48 explicitly states.

Those named in the contempt notice include:

    Osagie David Igbineweka; Barr. Hope Aliu; Tochukwu Okeke (aka Owo); Chukwuma Madike (aka Bobo); Bemigho Eyeoyibo (aka Bemuda);

    Dr. Anthony A. Orunkoya AKA Tony Masaka;

Elder Ikechukwu Ikechi A. Ozurumba; Apostle Ese Eruedoja; Scadela Ekhator and Isimeme Iriogbe

The issuance of Form 48 signals the court’s readiness to pursue contempt proceedings against any individual or group that flouts its orders. Legal experts say if found guilty, the accused could face serious penalties, including imprisonment.

The next hearing of the substantive suit indicates that where the court is expected to hear arguments on the motion for interlocutory injunction and determine further legal consequences for alleged violators.

Court begins hearing of NBM suit against Edo over property demolition

The Federal High Court, Benin has commenced hearing into the case filed by a philanthropist group, Neo-Black Movement (NBM) of Africa against Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo over alleged unlawful trespass and illegal demolition of its national secretariat, situated at Oba Ewuare II Cultural Centre 7, Arena Way, Amagba, Benin City, Edo state.

NBM’s 28-man legal team led by Chief Reginald Asiuwhu, filed a suit on Wednesday, June 4, seeking justice and adequate compensation for what they described as Edo State Government gross violations of their constitutional rights to freedom of Association and illegal destruction of their property.

Representing the Edo State Government in the case were prominent lawyers Steve Okuro, O. C. Igbinedion, C. C. Chinedu, and H.A Bello SAN.

During Thursday’s court session, the Edo State Government’s legal team led by H.A Bello SAN, argued that the third defendant in the suit had not yet been properly served with court papers.

Justice Chukwu Obiozor requested evidence of service from the NBM lawyers but they were unable to produce it, citing a misplaced document.

Consequently, Justice Obiozor adjourned the case to June 16, 2025, urging both parties to come prepared with complete documentation and to adhere strictly to legal procedures.

Outside the courtroom, Chief Reginald Asiuwhu expressed strong confidence in the movement’s case.

According to him: “NBM of Africa is a charitable, non-governmental organization whose secretariat was illegally demolished by the Edo State Government”.

“Before any responsible government demolishes any property, there must be a court order. This reckless act is why we are here to challenge and declare it unconstitutional.”

Asiuwhu argued that labeling the group as a “cult organisation” was defamatory, libelous and a blanket accusation that failed to respect due process.

According to him: “Assuming, without conceding, that there are a few bad eggs in the organization, it doesn’t make the entire organization a bad one.The organization is like every other organization in Nigeria. After all, NBM is properly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in line with Nigerian law.

“If the government had concerns, they should have reached out to the security cameras to check the activities within and around the NBM secretariat before taking any other legal steps”.

The NBM lawyer described the demolished secretariat as a “gigantic, well-furnished building” that also served the community for social events. “How then could they demolish it without notice, without giving us a chance to salvage anything, and without any fair hearing?” he queried.

He added “Edo State Government will pay heavily for what they have done. This will be the last illegal demolition they carry out,” insisting that the Edo state government would face consequences.

“We are not just fighting for NBM but for all registered organisations that could be targeted in the future.”

Dr. Sir Chukwudi Ijeoma, President of NBM of Africa Upper South East, said: “We came here to challenge this illegal demolition. We are a registered organization, and the government should recognize that,” he said.

But lawyers representing the Edo State Government declined to comment on the case.

On April 30, 2025, the Edo State Government mobilised bulldozers and staff to the international secretariat of the organisation to carry out the demolition of the entire building ,claiming it was aiding cultism .

Cultism: Edo threatens legal action against Neo Black Movement

The Edo Government has warned and begun consultations for legal action against the Neo Black Movement, also known as Black Axe, over spate of killings and cult-related violence in the state.

This is contained in a statement on Monday in Benin, by Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the governor,

Itua explained that government decisions followed public admission by leaders of the group, who opposed the lawful demolition of a building allegedly connected to violent cult-related activities.

He noted that by publicly opposing the demolished structure, the group confirmed their association with criminal acts orchestrated in the building, thereby opening themselves to investigation and prosecution under state laws.

“The demolished building functioned as a hub for planning and execution of violent attacks across Benin and beyond. The government can not allow such structures to exist unchallenged.

“The demolition was a lawful response based on intelligence executed in accordance with the Anti-cultism law passed by the Edo House of Assembly,” he said.

In response to the group’s claim of renovating six schools since Okpebholo’s tenure, Itua said that the government was demanding an official list, documents, and authorisation proof of such schools.

“The group must identify the renovated schools, present documented proof, and provide official approval.

”Failure to comply will attract legal action for defamation and unauthorised infrastructural interference.

“To ensure continued peace, the state government will build a divisional police station on the demolished site to deter crime and enhance security within the affected area.

“More demolitions of cult-related buildings will follow. The administration backed by anti-cultism legislation, remains firm in cleansing the state of criminal cult operations and violent networks,” he added.

The CPS also said that the governor as the Chief Security Officer of the state would not tolerate further killings by cultists.

He added that the governor was fully committed to securing the lives and properties of all residents of the state.

He emphasised that Gov. Monday Okpebholo had no links with any cult group, stressing that the governor was devoted solely to public safety and would dismantle any cult network encountered.

“Edo will never be a haven for cultists. All involved are advised to desist immediately, relocate, or face severe consequences,” he said.

Itua further stressed that the Anti-cultism laws of the state remained active and enforceable, adding that the Okpebholo-led administration would stop at nothing to eliminate all threats to peace, security, and sanctity of human life.

  • NBM of Africa hits Edo Govt over demolition of inter’l secretariat

NBM of Africa hits Edo Govt over demolition of inter’l secretariat

The Neo Black Movement (NBM) of Africa, a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), has condemned what it described as the unlawful demolition of its International Secretariat at Oba Ewuare II Cultural Centre 7, Arena Way, Amagba, Benin City.

It stated the approval of the exercise by  Governor Monday Okpebholo amounts to an abuse of power.

In a statement by Olorogun Ese Kakor and Chief Kelvin Agbroko, national President and Secretary respectively, the body decried the action of Edo State Government, noting that such unconstitutional and ultra vires decision contradicted provisions of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria, considering the fact that the organisation was a duly registered entity.

According to the body, the provisions of Section 7 of the Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, 2025, which the Edo State Government relied upon to carry out the demolition, contravene the provisions of the Constitution as contained in Sections 36, 40, 42, 43, and 44 of the CFRN 1999, as amended as  Section 7 of the Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, 2025.

It reaffirmed that the aspect of the provision relied upon by Governor Okpebholo in ordering the demolition of its international Secretariat was totally in contradiction with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic and therefore null and void to the extent of its inconsistency.

The statement read in part: “NBM of Africa is a registered Non-Governmental Organisation that carries out humanitarian services. The organisation also protects, preserves, and promotes African culture. It was founded under the principles of Pan-Africanism on 16th October 1977 and registered as a Non-Governmental Organization under Part C of CAMA on 24th February 1994 with registration No. 7729”.

“The organization has over 200 branches, all in Nigeria and the diaspora. It has its international secretariat at Amagba, Benin City, Edo State. The International Secretariat, which was built over a period of time and completed in the year 2022, comprises a 2000-capacity event center, a 20-room accommodation facility, fully furnished offices, a skill acquisition center, and is fully air-conditioned”.

“The secretariat has been functioning with a 250kVA generator to power the entire facility. The amphitheater is a state-of-the-art facility”.

“The Skills Acquisition Centre is meant to empower over 300 persons annually while it has over 100 employees. The property has been coexisting with neighbors. It has a free entry and exit that is open to members of the public”.

“The Edo State Government is a beneficiary of the organization’s humanitarian and charitable services. In February 2025, the organization donated school desks, chairs, doors, windows, and writing materials to 12 primary and secondary schools recommended by the Edo State Government. The schools and pupils are still reeling from the benefits of the humanitarian gesture of the organization”.

“On Wednesday, 30th April 2025, the Edo State Government mobilised bulldozers and its staff to the international secretariat of the organization to carry out the demolition of the entire building without prior notice”.

“The team of the Edo State Government that was mobilised to the secretariat was accompanied by fierce-looking policemen and soldiers who provided security cover for the state team that carried out the demolition”.

“The entire building was pulled down, and the movable properties contained therein were destroyed”

It added: “The act of the Edo State Government in demolishing the building and the destruction of the movable properties contained therein is totally condemnable”.

“The act is unconstitutional and ultra vires the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, particularly the relevant provisions of Sections 36, 40, 42, 43, and 44 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended”

“It is noteworthy that the provisions of Section 7 of the Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, 2025, which the Edo State Government relied upon to carry out the demolition, contravene the provisions of the Constitution as contained in Sections 36, 40, 42, 43, and 44 of the CFRN 1999, as amended”.

“We emphasise that Section 7 of the Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, 2025, is inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution of the FGN and therefore null and void to the extent of its inconsistency”.

“The organisation is exploring all legal means to remedy the wrong and seek redress over the unjustifiable and barbaric actions of the Edo State Government”.

“NBM of Africa is a law-abiding organization with over three million members, including senior citizens, professionals, captains of industry, businessmen, civil servants, and politicians”.

“The organization does not accommodate or harbor criminals. The Neo Black Movement is not a criminal organization. We have repeatedly informed the public that the Neo Black Movement is not Black Axe and has never been known as Black Axe; thus, the name should not be used interchangeably with Black Axe. The Neo Black Movement (NBM) of Africa is not a cult group. The organization is a body dedicated to African unity”.

“The organisation has carried out over six thousand humanitarian services around the world, which includes visiting and distributing palliatives worth one hundred and fifty million naira to victims of the flood disaster that ravaged thirteen states in Nigeria in 2023, namely Edo, Imo, Anambra, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Abia, Kogi, Kaduna, Benue, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Nassarawa states”.

“In 2022, the sum of two million naira was also given to the victims of the St. Francis Catholic Church terrorist attack at Owo, Ondo State. In 2024, the organization visited the Okuama IDP camp situated at Ewu, Delta State, where the sum of two million naira and palliatives worth over fifteen million naira were given to the victims”.

“In 2024, the organisation visited and shared palliatives worth over fifteen million naira and a cash donation of five million naira to the Maiduguri flood victims”

“The people of Edo State have always benefited from the organization’s humanitarian gestures. We know that the actions of the Edo State Governor to demolish the international secretariat of our organization have a political undertone, and we totally condemn his actions because they are unconstitutional.

“Sadly, the NBM leadership observes with dissatisfaction that, to date, His Excellency Monday Okpepholo, the Executive Governor of Edo State, is yet to provide any credible and persuasive reasons within a legal ambit justifying the malicious demolition of the organization’s International Secretariat”.

“The Neo Black Movement (NBM) of Africa as a legal entity and a law abiding organization will use any legal means within its reach to seek justice; hence, the organization has filed a case of fundamental right action at the Federal High Court in Benin against the Edo State Government”.

  • Group kicks over demolition of NBM of Africa secretariat in Benin

Group kicks over demolition of NBM of Africa secretariat in Benin

A group, South-South Professionals & Transparency Initiative (SSPTI), has condemned the demolition of a multi-purpose secretariat complex reportedly built at an estimated N1.5bn belonging to the Neo-Black Movement (NBM) of Africa in Benin over alleged war against criminal elements in the State.

In a statement by its Chairman, Dr. Ugochukwu Alozie, the body described the decision as vindictive and  outrageous, considering the fact that there was nothing incriminating or illegal that had been reported or said to have been associated with the very building.

SSPTI called on the members of the Neo-Black Movement (NBM) of Africa to explore all available legal means in seeking compensation from the Edo State Government, noting that through a court of competent jurisdiction the body can be sure of getting justice that would compel the government to pay for the act.

Governor Monday Okpebholo on Friday morning led his team to destroy some perceived hideout of criminals in the state, including a place the military had rescued some kidnaped victims held against their wish to learn internet frauds and other crimes.

The Governor led his team and security operatives to the NBM multi purpose national Secretariat located at Oba Ewuare ll cultural centre No 7 Arena way Amagba, in the heart of Benin city and ordered demolition of the structure based on the allegation that it was being used as criminals hideout.

The Secretariat was made up of a state-of-heart 2,000 capacity hall used as an event centre,a skill acquisition centre in addition to 20 tastefully furnished room accommodation for hospitality purpose, with a standard indoor swimming pool, a relaxation lounge, 250 KVA generator and other indoor appliances.

According to SSPTI: “Our grouse to the action of the Governor is that he failed to take the battle to the individual houses of these perceived political opponents but preferred to unleash the act of oppression against a collective body who have done him no harm or disturbed his government in any way.

“We even have it on good authority that the members of NBM of Africa, recently carried out some Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS) in 12 secondary and primary schools in Edo state, where they donated furnitures, writing materials, school desks and chairs to selected government schools to assist the poor pupils and students to settle into serious academic sessions, as part of an effort to giving back to the society”.

“This is the same set of people the Governor decided to demolish their buildings all because he wanted to get even with some perceived political opponents in the state.

“Consequently, we want the members of NBM of Africa, to proceed to court so as to get justice over Governor Monday Okpebholo high handedness and arbitrarily use of power to oppress a group whose members have proven to be responsible and cultured in the society.”

  • We are a voluntary social group with no violent links, says NBM of Africa

We are a voluntary social group with no violent links, says NBM of Africa

The leadership of the Neo Black Movement of Africa (NBM), a Pan-African Group, has reiterated its membership is open to the public and operates under a constitution that is accessible to everyone.

It dissociated itself from from Black-Axe Confraternity.

Making clarification on the vision and mission of NBM of Africa, while addressing newsmen in Warri at the weekend, its President, Olorogun Ese Kakor, noted that the organisation believes strongly in giving back to the society by embarking on so many humanitarian gestures aimed at alleviating burden of the people.

He cited examples with donations to the Internal displaced persons of Okuoma community in Ughelli South Council area of Delta State, recently invaded by soldiers, donations to flood victims in their various camps during the devastating flooding experienced recently, provision of Pro bono services to those that can’t afford legal services and boreholes constructed as part of the efforts to provide portable water for communities.

According to him: “In addition to these, we have also conducted series of the free medical services, especially eye test and treatment in some communities that are in need of it, as well as offered scholarships to some indigent students we have identified to ensure that they are not constrained by funding.

“And it would interest you to know that we are rendering all these humanitarian projects from the monthly dues, contributions and levies paid by our members within and outside the country and we are prepared to tender our bank statement for scrutiny whenever the security agencies demands it.

“We also want to make it clear that some of our activities like meetings, elections, seminars and conferences were being monitored by security agencies, especially the police and DSS so that they can report their findings and we have never denied them access to coverage of our events to prove that we do not have any sinister agenda.

“Even the election that brought me into office in 2021 & 2023, held at Asaba, Delta state capital, was conducted under the supervision of Department of state security service (DSS) and the police.

“And they had to forward their reports to their various Commands for processing and documentation. So you can see that our doors are open to everyone who desires to know anything about us and what we stand for as a body”.

While noting that the only aspect where some persons were getting confused about their organisation and the Black Axe Confraternity was the use of the Axe in their logo, stating that the Axe they displayed in the Logo depicts ideals of their founding fathers as captured on the first page of their constitution.

“Just like farmers engages the Axe to cut down trees and dismantle hard rocks on their farms, we also believe in engaging the Axe to fight corruption, crimes, oppression and intimidation in the society”, stating that it does not have any link or tie with the Axe associated with the Black-Axe Confraternity and that the organization’s logo does not in anyway infer violence or any form of lawlessness.

He added: “We will not allow anyone to tell our stories for us, we will tell our stories ourselves. NBM of Africa should not be held responsible for plagiarism and imitation done by other groups.
We welcome investigations of the security agencies into our affairs.

“Our books are open for audit and review. Our finances are gotten through contributions and levies mutually agreed by members”.

“The fact that a member of NBM of Africa violates the law does not make all members law breakers. The fact that a member of NBM is a deviant does not make all members deviants.
