“NCP is a party based on ideology and integrity.

Ogba said Omoragbon was absent at the primary because he travelled to Europe on a humanitarian assignment, adding that his flight was cancelled because of the terrorist attack in Turkey.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security operatives were present at the primaries.

  • ‘Why corruption still remains an issue for Buhari govt’

‘Why corruption still remains an issue for Buhari govt’

Leadership of 19 registered political parties Wednesday gave reason why corruption is still a primary issue for the Muhammad Buhari’s administration.

According to the political parties, previous attempt have not been as successful as they should be.

The noted that the anti-graft war is crucial to the survival of the country.

The political parties include Labour Party, LP, Action Alliance, AA, National Conscience Party, NCP, Democratic People’s Party, DPP, African Democratic Congress, ADC, Democratic Party of Nigeria, DPN, and MPPP amongst others.

Briefing newsmen in Abuja Wednesday, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, who read the text of the media briefing on behalf of the parties, said.

“We want to put on record that we are solidly behind President Muhammad Buhari’s fight against corruption; a fight that we believe is crucial to the survival of our country.

“In fact, the reason corruption is still a primary issue for the Buhari administration is that previous attempts have not been as successful as they should be.”

They however noted that the way and manner the anti-graft agencies are carrying out the fight might scuttle the president’s noble intention.

He said; “We however wish to note that this is not the first time that a president of this country would be declaring a war against corruption. We aver that one of the major obstacles in the fight against political corruption in Nigeria over the years is the way and manner it has been fought so as to give the impression that the fight is selective and targeted only at perceived enemies of government.”

The political parties warned that “once an anti-corruption is perceived as politically motivated, then the entire war against corruption easily gets reduced to a means of settling political scores rather than genuine commitment to fighting corruption. We are afraid that if care is not taken, the President Buhari’s avowed commitment to fighting corruption may end up in the ways of his predecessors.”

Citing the recent clearance of the Chairman of Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, Justice Danladi Umar by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) of allegation of misconduct, the political parties noted that the commission’s posture was a wrong signal arguing that it is only the law court that can do so.

The parties therefore called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct an immediate investigation to unravel the circumstances which led to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFFC, issuing the letter of clearance to Justice Danladi Umar over his alleged involvement in N10 million bribery scandal.

On the ongoing trial of the Senate President, Abdulsalam said the political parties were not against his trail, stressing that “President Buhari needs to act now, not to stop Saraki’s trial but to ensure that the process of fighting corruption does not end up being even more corrupt than the corruption it seeks to eliminate.”

The political parties however kicked against Justice Umar’s presiding over the trial.

According to them, “We recall that the Chairman of the Tribunal has himself been under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on allegations of bribery and corruption.

“We observe however that the preponderance of evidence that has been deployed so far against Dr. Saraki, including the Principal Prosecution Witness in the matter, were supplied by the EFCC.

“What that means is that the Chairman of the Tribunal, Mr. Danladi Umar, is not only beholden to, but also under the control of the prosecution. Invariably, since Mr. Danladi Umar has the prosecutors ‘axe dangling on his neck, his ability to do justice to the defendant would be naturally impaired.

“To make the matter worse, we noted how the EFCC, in an unprecedented act of desperation, hurriedly issued a memo re-activating a report to the AGF and SGF dated 5th March, 2015, which it now attempts to present as a clearance letter to Umar.

“If this act alone does not confirm the grand collusion between the EFCC and the Chairman of the Tribunal to tilt the scale of justice against Dr. Saraki, then nothing would. However, if this case is about strengthening probity and accountability in public office, we fully support it; even as we insist that justice must not only be done, but be seen by all to have been done to all.”

NCP okays partnership funding for NRC

The National Council on Privatisation (NCP) has directed the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) to commence collaboration with the Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility (NIAF) which has committed to funding the consultancy for the development of the roadmap and framework for the concession of the rail tracks of Nigeria Railways Corporation (NRC).

This was one of the decisions reached following the presentation of the Director-General of the BPE, Mr. Benjamin Dikki at the meeting of the Council  yesterday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Public Enterprises (Privatisation and Commercialisation) Act, 1999 scheduled the NRC for privatisation and the NCP in 2002 approved that the enterprise be concessioned to private operators to provide freight and passenger railway services using the vertical integration model.

The decision to reform the railways was borne out of  government’s desire to avoid the collapse and eventual shut down of the railways, generally regarded as a loss making but socially and economically imperative to the nation.

    NATCOM takes over NITEL/Mtel

    •Promises good service delivery

The National Council on Privatisation (NCP) yesterday handed over the assets of the  Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (Nitel) and its mobile arm, the Mobile Telecommunications Mtel  to the core investor, NATCOM.

After receiving the certificate for the ownership for national carrier and Gateway License of Nitel and the Mtel  Spectrum, the NATCOM Consortium Chairman, Dr. John Olatunde Ayeni promised that the firm “will bring a brand that will delight the Nigerian customers and market.”

The CEO, who spoke in Abuja said: “A new player and a new entity is entering the telecom industry today  and a new brand and a strong brand has come.”

He said the firm is of the belief that there is a vacuum in the telecommunications market and the vacuum is the space that NATCOM’s unique brand would fill.

Filling the vacuum entails “listening to the customers and delighting them with what they need,”he said,   promising that his group has resolved to make the customer the king.

Vice President Namadi Sambo, who is also the NCP chairman, told the chequred history  of  Nitel and Mtel before its final  privatisation to NATCOM .

He recalled that in 2001, the strategic core investor sale of 51 per cent shareholding of Nitel to International London Limited (IILL) was unsuccessful.

He noted that in 2005, there was also a failed management contract by Pentascope with and aborted Orascom Telecoms bid in the same year.

Sambo said there was the strategic core investor sale, through negotiated sale strategy, to Transcorp which was cancelled in 2009.

In 2011, according to him, there was the strategic core investor sale, where New Generation Communications Limited and Omen International Limited emerged as preferred bidders.

On NATCOM, the Vice President explained that NCP approved the privatisation through a Guided Liquidation Strategy through a competitive bid process.

He stressed that two bidders submitted their technical and financial proposals after which NATCOM met met the technical requirement.

Sambo said that “Its financial proposal was publicly opened on October 24, 2014. The first bid was $221million which was below the reserved price. After a second round of bidding, the revised bid of $252,221,000 was above the reserve price. NATCOM was therefore declared the preferred bidder.”

He urged stakeholders to see the privatisation as a necessary tool for the deregulation and opening up of hitherto government dominated sectors of the economy to the private sector as well as divestures of government’s interest in such sectors.

  • NCP ‘ll make impact, says chieftain

NCP ‘ll make impact, says chieftain

The National Conscience Party (NCP) has said that its presidential candidate, Martins Onovo, will win the general elections and liberate the masses from the shackles of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

NCP Publicity Secretary Tony Onye, in an interview with The Nation, said the party, which was founded by late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, has vigorously campaigned at the grassroots and would win in a free and fair election.

He chided the PDP for clamouring to remove the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Attahiru Jega, insisting that the ruling party was afraid of free and fair elections.

According to him, the NCP is solidly behind Jega on his resolve to use smart card readers for the elections, just as he warned against any plan to sack the INEC boss before the polls.

The NCP spokesman who said: “There are a lot of things we can do because at the moment nothing has been done by the PDP government to better the lives of the citizens of Nigeria.

“NCP is more active than it was in the days of Chief Fawehinmi. We are upholding the ideals and legacies of the late legal icon that is why we have a presidential candidate.

“We want to deliver good governance. Nigeria even at the time of Chief Fawehinmi has gotten corrupt to the extend that those who had money bought over the votes of others.

“They use money that belongs to the citizens to buy voters over. Fawehinmi sid not play that kind of politics and our current candidate is not playing that kind of politics.

“It is not that the people did not vote Chief Fawehinmi but those in power bought over people’s votes. Presently we are on course to ensure that similar things do not happen.

“Engineer Onovo is the best candidate in the race now and that is why we have been campaigning from communities. We are telling Nigerians that we will bring the needed change in the areas of security, economy, agriculture and employment. These are areas thing the present government has failed.

“We are promising that security will be assured. People do not have to panic on the road or in their homes. It is a very simple thing which the present and past governments have failed to do.

“We have the armed forces and other security agencies. What they need is adequate training, equipment and welfare. The money is here. We have the resources in this country.

“The present leadership does not make security personnels happy. They owe them salaries and do not pay them well. When you pay them well, they will be able to fight and spill their blood for this nation. These are the things our candidate will address.

“Nigeria is well blessed with resources. What we need is to stop the diversion of our resources so that the money can be effectively utilised for the benefit of all.

“We insist that the party in power should jot do anything to discredit the electoral process. They should not try to corner votes. If people are allowed to cast their votes effectively,  definitely NCP will win. We are in support of Jega and we are saying he should be allowed to stay to conduct the elections. He does not have to go on leave for any reason because he is in better position to conduct the elections.

“If Jega conduct the elections I know definitely they will be free and fair, PDP will be voted out and our candidate will win. Any other person that will be brought in to conduct this election will do the bidding g of the PDP and we are saying no to that.”
