NCPC suspends pilgrimage to Israel, Jordan

In consideration of anxieties generated by the ongoing conflict in Israel, the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) has decided to suspend airlifting of the last batch of intending Christian Pilgrims to Israel and Jordan.

Executive Secretary of NCPC, Reverend Yakubu Pam, who spoke with The Nation on Tuesday, said while government’s assessment of the situation in Israel and realities on the ground indicated that the holy sites that Nigerian Christians usually visit are safe, increased anxieties in Nigeria constituted part of reasons why the airlift initially scheduled for Tuesday got postponed.

Emphasising that pilgrims’ security is most paramount for NCPC, he noted that perception of security begins from the mind, adding that a private group of 70 Nigerian Christian Pilgrims arrived Israel on Monday while a batch of Christian pilgrims from Lagos had just returned safely.

Nigerian Christian pilgrims visit Jordan, a Moslem nation, to see holy sites from the Old Testament era while much of the sites in Israel are from the New Testament period.

A statement by NCPC’s management on Tuesday, explained various stakeholders, including States Christian Pilgrims Welfare Boards across the Federation, intending pilgrims and the general public have been formally informed the scheduled airlift of intending Christian Pilgrims to Israel and Jordan on Tuesday, 10th October, 2023 has been suspended.
“The Commission hereby reiterates that the safety of the Nigerian pilgrims remain our top priority and would not compromise the safety and well-being of our pilgrims.

“We hereby assure you all that the Commission is in constant touch with our Ground Handlers over the precarious security situation in Israel.

“We would ensure that the stakeholders are promptly communicated as soon as the situation in Israel de-escalates.

“The Commission would want to use this medium to enjoin all Christians to intercede in prayer for peace and progress to prevail in Nigeria and in the State of Israel.

“We hereby regrets any inconvenience this suspension might have caused you,” the NCPC management stated.

No date has been fixed for the postponed airlift but a source informed The Nation that it is likely to take place sometimes in December.

NCPC Chairman says unity crucial to Nigeria’s growth

Rev. Cletus Gotan, Chairman, Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), has emphasised the need for unity in Nigeria, stressing that it was crucial to building a strong and virile nation.

Gotan spoke in Abuja at a meeting with the NCPC board, management, state pilgrimage leaders, and Christian pilgrimage operators in Nazareth, Israel.

“We must all champion the cause of unity. We cannot get anywhere without it,” he stated.

Goran referred to John 17: 20-21, where Jesus emphasised unity, and encouraged Christian leaders to preach similar message to the Faithful.

He expressed optimism that God would grant the NCPC board the grace to lead excellently, emphasising the importance of selflessness.

“In NCPC, you and I have the responsibility to worship together so that truth and love should continue to bind us together,” he said.

He affirmed that Christianity had a strong tradition of pilgrimage, and highlighted the importance of reconnecting with God and learning about the history of Christianity.

The Nigerian Ambassador to Israel, Mrs Agatha Afoekelu, in a remark, acknowledged the significance of pilgrimage in Christianity, and commended the leadership of Bishop Stephen Adegbite, NCPC Executive Secretary.

She emphasised the need for pilgrims to conduct themselves properly and avoid negative tendencies.

“Pilgrimage is not a jamboree; it is a serious spiritual exercise.

“The Holy Land is holy and will continue to be holy,” she declared.

According to her, the Nigerian Embassy is working closely with Israel’s Ministry of Interior to ensure the comfort and security of Nigerian pilgrims.

Adegbite, in his remarks, expressed gratitude for the retreat and highlighted the transformation in NCPC’s image since he was appointed.

“We shall strive to meet everyone’s expectation. We are one family and we will leave a remarkable mark behind.

“This retreat is a period of spiritual rejuvenation and we are here to seek the face of God,” Adegbite said.

  • NCPC assures of improved services

The Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) has assured of improved services in its pilgrimage operations.

The Federal Commissioner representing Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on NCPC Board, Rev. Dr Israel Akanji, stated this in Jerusalem during a Jerusalem Pilgrims Certificate presentation ceremony.

Akanji, who stood in for Chairman of NCPC, Pastor Yomi Kasali and its Executive secretary, Rev. Tor Uja, thanked God for the success of the closing ceremony of the pilgrimage circle.

He said: “In the course of this pilgrimage, we have observed some areas that might need improvement”.

He stated the benefits surpassed some of the hardships the pilgrims encountered during their pilgrimage journey.

He explained that the Easter pilgrimage ought to have commenced in the first quarter of the year but was delayed due to visa challenges.

However, he stated that the commission was grateful to God for the resolution of the problem following the intervention of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.

He informed that the Board was worried about the spate of defections among pilgrims, which necessitated the meeting with the Nigerian ambassador to Israel recently.

The Cleric admonished the pilgrims to always conduct themselves properly and befitting as they return to Nigeria.

  • Spreading the gospel of pilgrimage

    Spreading the gospel of pilgrimage

The Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) has toured some parts of the country to spread the gospel of pilgrimage. Sunday Oguntola reports that the Christian community is enthusiastic about making the exercise more impactful and meaningful.

Time was 9:40pm. It had been a long, hectic day. Yet when the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Rev Tor Uja, emerged from the office of the Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, last Wednesday, he didn’t, in the least, look tired.

Rather, he appeared animated and fulfilled. For two days, he and his team had been practically on the roads, selling the importance of pilgrimage to stakeholders in the Christian and political communities. It was a tiring exercise but one that the team carried out with excitement and convictions.

The conviction was palpable despite the physical exertion of the tour. The first part of call was Government House, Ondo State, last Tuesday where the team met with Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, his deputy Agboola Ajayi, and some members of the Executive Council.

Uja told Akeredolu God was counting on genuine Christians in authority to uphold the faith. He recalled how efforts of King James of the United Kingdom resulted to the publication of the King James Version. By commissioning a team of scholars and supporting them to embark on the project, he recalled the church got a version of the Bible out of the 3,000 versions in existence then.

He charged Akeredolu to consider how he could promote reforms and changes, saying God was counting on him to make his Christian faith speak boldly.

Settling down to the business of the day, Uja said pilgrimage is a veritable tool to redefine the image of the country and encourage Nigerians to uphold nationalism.

He also stated pilgrimage will deepen the faith of believers and enable them to become better citizens while contributing to nation-building.

Lending his voice to the sponsorship debate, the Executive Secretary said: “Churches should begin to sponsor their leaders, members and associates so that it does not look like a government affair.

“Pilgrimage belongs to the church and Christians should consider it their responsibility to pay their way down.”

He informed the governor of plans to have specialised pilgrimage for women, traditional rulers, business executives and youths to enable the groups take up interesting interactions, discussions and prayers during the exercise.

He said subsequent pilgrimages will include skill acquisition, especially in the farming exploits of Israel despite the apparent disadvantages of the Holy Land.

Akeredolu thanked the team for the visit, assuring that the state would work with churches to encourage more Christians to perform the exercise.

The governor said pilgrimage is essential to build confidence in the authenticity of the Bible as well as improve the spiritual well-being of Christians.

The team headed immediately to the ancient town of Owo for a courtesy visit to the Olowo, Dr David Folagbade Olateru-Olagbegi (111).

The palace was full of Christian traditional rulers who came to give the Olowo moral support. They came from different parts of the South West to hear the gospel of pilgrimage. The Olowo is the chairman of Association of Christian Traditional Rulers in the South West.

Uja said traditional rulers are important to God in the expansion of the Kingdom and good governance. He praised the Olowo for administering the kingdom with striking humility and the fear of God.

He called on the Olowo to consider a youth skill acquisition centre in the town for the nurturing of the younger generation so that they can learn from his legacies and achievements as a former law lecturer.

Uja said Christian traditional rulers would soon be in Israel on a pilgrimage centred around deep prayers, dialogue and interactions. “I believe we will see the lights in this nation when we do that,” he assured.

On the importance of pilgrimage, Uja said: “Every Christian leader should go to Israel at least once in a lifetime to pray and see developmental strides in the Holy Land and replicate same back home.”

The Olowo thanked the team for the visit. He assured of his support for drives to make more Christians embrace pilgrimage.

The train headed back to Akure where Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) leaders were waiting for briefing as soon as the meeting was over.

Uja walked into the hall to a warm reception. He told the CAN leaders from wards across the state that Christians must take pilgrimage more seriously. He discouraged the idea of waiting on government for sponsorship, saying the current economic downturns have almost foreclosed that possibility.

“Pilgrimage belongs to the church; government should not take it over. It is our own to own. When we take it over, we would do things differently,” he charged.

He challenged the CAN leaders to develop programmes that would stimulate interests in pilgrimage and never allow anyone to remain the same again after the exercise. “People should not just come back with gallons of water of bottles of oil. They should come back with a passion and zeal for the things of God,” he stated.

He urged many of them to consider spending their annual leave on pilgrimage, saying that would afford them the opportunity to refresh, rethink and repackage for greater exploits in their churches.

On Wednesday, it was the turn of Ekiti State to host the enthusiastic team. It firstly met with CAN leaders where challenges facing pilgrimage in the state were discussed and tackled.

The team moved to the Government House where Governor Ayo Fayose gladly asked his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, to receive the team. Uja pointed out that the church has not seen pilgrimage as a necessity.

He said the perception that the exercise must be government- sponsored is wrong and counter-productive. Government, he explained, can encourage and stimulate the Christian community, adding “it is our responsibility as a church to champion it.”

He informed that the Commission was determined to make the exercise spiritually-lifting and geared towards stimulating nationalism as well as personal transformation.

“We want you to push the church to stimulate us to do what we should do. If you leave us on our own, our weak hands become weaker but if you push us, we wouldn’t look back,” Uja appealed.

Olusola promised that the government would identify philanthropists who can sponsor people for pilgrimage. “We have many good people in Ekiti State and we only need to make out time to find them out.

“It would be our joy to partner with individuals, churches and organisations to get more people to Israel. We are committed to doing that by the grace of God,” the deputy governor stated.

  • NCPC boss urges pilgrims to pray for President Buhari in holy land

NCPC boss urges pilgrims to pray for President Buhari in holy land

The Executive Secretary, Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC), Rev. Tor Ujah, has urged Christian pilgrims from Borno to pray for the quick recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari while in the holy land.

The Executive Secretary made the call while bidding the first batch of Christian pilgrims to Israel farewell from the Aminu Kano International Airport on Friday.

Uja said, “The President, who is in United Kingdom for a medical checkup, needs your prayers for a speedy recovery to enable him to continue with the good work he has started because you are now traveling to a holy land.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the journey, which took place at about 1:30 a.m., had 130 pilgrims from Borno.

While urging the pilgrims to be good ambassadors, he also warned them against absconding at the holy land.

Uja commended the Borno Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, for sponsoring the 130 pilgrims and urged other northern governors to emulate the gesture.

He said the gesture was “to heal a people that unnecessary war had ravaged.’’

The secretary praised the governor for his commitment and purpose in spite of the years of security challenges in the state and the entire North East.

He urged the northern governors to give equal treatment to Christians in their land because such was capable of uniting the two religions.

“I want all the northern governors to establish the Christian Pilgrims Commission in their states to make traveling easy for the pilgrims,” he said.

Before their departure, the President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Borno Chapter, Bishop Naga Williams, commended Shettima for sponsoring the pilgrims.

He also commended the Kano State Government for doing same for Christians in the state.

According to him, the gesture by the two states is worth commendation because it is an indication that both Islam and Christianity are one.

  • NCPC boss receives board members

Newly appointed Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Rev. Tor Uja, recently received Federal Commissioners on the board of the commission. Uja thanked the commissioners for the visit and informed them that he had made a resolution not to leave the commission better than he met it.

He said the former boss of the commission, Mr. John Kennedy Opara, did very well and as such must be appreciated publicly.

According to him:” He really worked hard. God will bless him”. He promised to organize a befitting sent- forth for him sometimes in July and would invite the board and stakeholders to grace the event.

He explained that he took over the leadership of the  NCPC at a very challenging moment when the country is facing serious economic recession.

However, he stated that Nigeria had done fairly well, but should look further than oil.

According to him: “Going Forward Nigeria has greater chances in future.”

Rev. Uja assured the members of board that the pilgrimage process would continue with their support.

He hinted that the commission was working towards airlifting about 20,000 pilgrims to the holy land this year.

The NCPC boss maintained that it is possible for Nigerians to be exposed to pilgrimage at least once in a life time.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Rev. Dr. Zion Ibenye, Federal Commissioner representing South East said they visited the new Executive Secretary to formally welcome him since his appointment and assumption of duty.

  • NCPC launches Win-a-Trip to Israel in Taraba

The Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) has launched the “Win a Trip to Israel” promo in Taraba State.

Governor Ishaku Dairus, who launched the raffle draw, commended the Executive Secretary of the NCPC, John Kennedy Opara, for his visionary leadership style and the innovations he has brought to bear on the commission.

The governor further said the “Win a Trip to Israel” was a laudable programme as it would help government to withdraw from sponsorship of intending pilgrims.

Governor Dairus affirmed that he would try as much as possible to encourage Christians to go on pilgrimage, adding that the benefits of pilgrimage are enormous.

In his words: “I was really blessed during the 2015 A Day with Jesus in Israel”.

He paid for 16,000 tickets for the 16 local government areas of the state. According to him, “each local government would share 1,000 tickets to enable those who cannot afford the cost of pilgrimage to Israel to benefit from the draw”.

The governor promised to sponsor 100 youths to participate in the commission’s youth pilgrimage to enable the youths in Taraba State benefit from the Skill Acquisition Programme.

According to him, “I know the youths will learn skills that will make them independent”.

Opara, in his remark, stressed that the idea of the “Win a Trip to Israel” was born out of the need to afford many Christians the opportunity to embark on the pilgrimage to Israel in view of the economic situation of the country at no cost to the state or federal government.

The two lucky winners that emerged in the “Win a Trip to Israel” raffle draw were Miss Sapdira Bem and Mr. Woburi Ezekiel.

The promo in Taraba State was powered by  Fortune Game Nigeria Limited, the NCPC,  National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

  • Buhari approves Kennedy-Opara’s disengagement from service

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the disengagement of Mr. John Kennedy- Opara as the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC).

In a two paragraphs statement signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, the disengagement took effect from Thursday, May 19.

“Mr. President, however, thanked Kennedy-Opara for his invaluable services to the nation and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” the statement added.

  • NCPC organises raffle draw for Christian Pilgrims

For as low as N500, less privileged Christians have an opportunity to perform this year’s pilgrimage to Israel.

This is courtesy of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC), which has entered into partnership with a private company, Fortune Games Limited, to organise raffle draws for Nigerians to participate in the pilgrimage.

The step was also motivated by the withdrawal of many state governments from sponsorship of pilgrims to the Holy Land in view of the economic hardship occasioned by low receipts from the Federation Account.

Under the programme tagged: “Win a Trip to Israel,” the winners will be sponsored to the pilgrimage by the NCPC.

Other partners in the scheme are Nigerian Lottery Commission and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

Interested members of the public are expected to purchase raffle tickets at the rate of N500 from all branches of the United Bank for Africa (UBA).

Addressing a briefing in Ado Ekiti, Fortune Games Chief Executive, Otunba Ayo Arise, explained that winners  from all the states of the  federation will be sponsored by the commission after emerging  from a transparent contest.

Arise said: “With the way some states are backing out of sponsorship of Holy Pilgrimage, the commission foresees that only the rich Nigerians could afford sponsorship and this may not serve the interest the programme was designed to meet.

“The  money gathered from the sales of the lottery ticket will be used to sponsor the winners to Israel .

“The Muslims’ Pilgrimage Commission is also working on similar programme.

“What makes this raffle draw very unique is that the Muslims will be allowed to play and if he or she wins he will be sponsored to Israel. This will help in promoting peaceful co-existence among religious groups in our country.”
