  • Vandals destroy six power transmission towers of TCN in Delta

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says six of its power transmission towers along Delta-Benin and Delta–Sapele-Benin 330kV transmission line routes have been vandalised with some of the towers removed.

Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs in a statement on Monday in Abuja said the vandalism, coupled with the heavy rainfall of March 17, caused the collapse of tower No 61 alone.

Mbah said when the transmission line tripped, a patrol team was dispatched to investigate the cause and investigations revealed that the tower had collapsed and its aluminum conductors were on the ground.

She said the patrol team also discovered that tower members of five other towers including the tower directly opposite tower 61 on the Ughelli – Benin line route were missing.

According to her, the Delta-Benin and Delta-Sapele-Benin 330kV transmission lines evacuate power from Transcorp power Limited, in Ughelli into the national grid.

“With the collapse of tower No 61 on Delta-Benin line, TCN is now evacuating the power through Delta – Sapele- Benin 330kV transmission line alone.

“Although the collapsed tower has not affected power evacuation, transmission lines redundancy is effected until the second line is restored,’’she said.

She said TCN had been facing the challenge of repeated attacks by vandals on the Benin transmission line axis since December 2018.

Mbah said the company had also made formal reports to security operatives and to the traditional rulers in the area, including the King of Okpe Land and the Ovie of Oghara.

According to her, the traditional leaders equally held meetings with their subjects to address the menace of vandalism in the axis,  but to no avail.

She, however, said TCN had already mobilised its quick response and repair engineering team to the site, noting that repair works on the affected towers would be completed in four weeks.

“TCN reiterates the need for host communities to watch over electricity installations in their domain, to forestall the destructive activities of vandals,’’ she said.

She also urged electricity customers nationwide to report any unusual activities around electrical installations to appropriate authorities (NAN)

  • TCN wheels 4,613.5mw daily energy peak to GenCos

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Saturday announced that power sector has achieved a new daily grid energy peak of 110,724.93MWH (4,613.5mw) on Wednesday.

This is an improvement on the previous maximum daily grid energy peak of 109,372,01MWH (4,557.1mw) attained over two years ago on the 2nd of February 2016.

In a statement by the General Manager (Public Affairs), Ndidi Mbah, TCN said that the new maximum daily energy peak is much higher than the last one attained over two years ago by 1,352.92MWH.

TCN explained the maximum daily grid energy of 110,724.93MWH is different from the peak grid generation (power) of 5,375.0MW attained on February 7, 2019.

The maximum daily grid energy refers to the quantum of energy that is wheeled from generators to distribution load centers nationwide throughout a whole day (00.00Hrs 24:00Hrs).

This is measured in Maga Watts Hour, while the peak grid generation (power), which is a singular reading or high point in grid generation, is measured in Megawatts.

According to the statement, the new maximum daily energy and the peak generation (power) show TC has enhanced capacity and capability to wheel and transmit more power, over time, into the grid, provided the Distribution companies are ready to serve the load to electricity consumers.

It is also evidence the ongoing Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Program (TREP) being executed by TCN is paying off.

TCN noted that the success of TREP is in line with this administration’s incremental power policy and that it is poised to continue to play its role in the power sector value chain as well as ensure that its grid expansion plan is implemented on time.

Implementation of TREP, it said, is tied to its 20 Year Least Cost Transmission Expansion Master Plan, aimed at systematically expanding the nation’s transmission grid.

  • TCN tackles power instability in sokoto, birnin-kebbi and gusau

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has apologized for the current power supply limitation within Sokoto, Talata-Mafara and Gusau, resulting from transmission capacity constraints on its Birnin-Kebbi-Sokoto-Talata-Mafara-Gusau transmission line, which was caused by the collapse of 132kV tower between Funtua and Gusau.

According to the statement signed by the GM Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, TCN said that the situation was caused by the collapse of Tower No 307 on Funtua-Gusau Transmission line route which cut off bulk electricity supply to Gusau. As remedial measure however, the company has started back-feeding distribution load centres in Gusau through its 80MW capacity Birnin Kebbi-Sokoto-Talata-Mafara Transmission line. The combined capacity of Sokoto, Talata-Mafara and Gusau is much higher than the maximum capacity the line is built to carry, resulting in overload of the line and consequently, reduced bulk electricity to Sokoto, Birnin-Kebbi and Gusau.

TCN said that it had already mobilized a contractor to site has started erecting a new tower which would be completed in two weeks. It further revealed that investigations into the cause of the collapse are on-going and would soon be concluded.

The company further stated that under the on-going Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Program (TREP), procurement for the Kainji-Birnin Kebbi-Sokoto 330kV transmission Line and a 330kV substation in Sokoto will soon commence. The procurement of high capacity conductors for the re-conductoring Birnin Kebbi-Sokoto and Kaduna-Zaria-Funtua-Gusau 132kV Transmission lines that will double the current capacity of the lines has also reached advanced stage.

TCN appealed to the governments and good people of Sokoto and Zamfara States for patience, and assured that the tower would be completed as scheduled and normal power transmission restored to electricity consumers in the states.

  • TCN explains power outage in North-East states

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says the current power outage in some North East states was due to a tripping, caused by a fault on the Jos-Gombe 330kv transmission line.

TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mbah stated this in a statement on Monday in Abuja, adding that the problem occurred shortly after the annual scheduled maintenance on the transmission line.

According to her, the line tripping occurred at about 19:09, on Sept. 22, shortly after it was re-energised.

She said efforts were being made by TCN line engineering crew to resolve the problem and restore the transmission line accordingly.

“TCN shot down on Sept. 22, to undertake the annual scheduled maintenance on the 330 kv transmission line from Jos to Gombe.

“After the maintenance work had been completed by combined engineering maintenance crew from Gombe and Jos transmission substations, the transmission line was reclosed and energised at about 15:09 hours on the same day at 19:09 hours.

“However, the line tripped due to a fault on the line and TCN quickly initiated the patrol of the transmission line to detect and rectify the fault,’’ Mbah said.

She said efforts were ongoing to rectify the problem so as to reclose and energise the 330kv transmission line.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that states affected by the outage include Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Borno, Yobe and Taraba.

  • NNPC restores ruptured pipeline, gas supply to generating plants

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Tuesday in Lagos said gas supply to generating stations had built up gradually after the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) restored a ruptured pipeline.

Mrs Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs of TCN, said within a day power supply would be restored to normal.

Mbah said an indication that gas supply had improved was the increase in power generation into the National Grid to 3,876.9 Megawatts as at 17.00hrs on Monday, as reported by National Control Centre (NCC).

“TCN wishes to use this opportunity to commend NNPC, especially Nigerian Gas Corporation (NGC) for the quick intervention.

“The company also appreciates the Ministry of Power, Generation Companies (GENCOs), Distribution Companies (DISCOs) and electricity customers for their cooperation during the crises period,” she said.

According to Mbah, as soon as the gas build up is completed, the affected generating stations would resume normal generation into the National Grid.

The general manager said through the implementation of Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme, TCN was building new substations as well as upgrading existing ones and transmission lines all over the country.

“This is expected to further stabilise the Grid and also put necessary flexibility and redundancy in line with N-1 capacity.

“TCN will continue to count on all Nigerians for support and understanding as it continues to expand the nations’ grid,” she said in a statement.

TCN said on June 15, that rupture of a major NGC pipeline had scuttled the delivery of gas to six power plants.

It said this led to a drop in power generation by 1,087 megawatts and compelled the company to embark on load-shedding.

It stated that the load-shedding was adopted to maintain stability of the national grid, thus avoiding total power system collapse.

The affected power stations included Ihovbor, Azura, Omotosho gas, Geregu gas, Olorunsogo gas, Sapele and Egbin Power Station, which has managed to generate 60MW only on each of its units, losing a total of 211MW.

Also, Afam VI power station was shut down to enable Shell resolve its gas well issues and commence gas supply to Afam VI power station.
