The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed heaps of illicit drugs weighing about 1.6 million kilograms of assorted illicit substances seized across Lagos, Ogun and Oyo state by setting them ablaze.

According to a statement by the Director, Media and Advocacy NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, Femi Babafemi, on Saturday, this is the largest volume of seizures to be set ablaze at a time in the history of the Agency.

Babafemi said the public destruction of the illicit substances witnessed by representatives of government officials, traditional rulers, clergymen, other security agencies, international partners, non governmental organisations and community leaders, among others, was conducted at an isolated location at Ipara, along Lagos-Ibadan expressway, Ogun state on Saturday 12th April 2025.

Some of the illicit drugs destroyed include 123 kilograms of cocaine; 46.8 kilograms of heroin; 1.4 million kilograms of cannabis; 148,000 kilograms of codeine syrup; 3,244.26 kilograms of tramadol; 1,544 kilograms of skuchies; and 111 kilograms of methamphetamine, among others.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) said the exercise is a testament to the Agency’s steadfast commitment to tackling the scourge of drug trafficking in the country.

“The sheer volume of seizures, which totals approximately 1.6 million kilograms, serves as a reminder of the grave danger these substances pose to public health until they are completely and irreversibly destroyed.

“The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) operates under a clear mandate to reduce these narcotics to rubble. At all times, we discharge this duty with the utmost seriousness and diligence”, he stated.

He warned those involved in drug trafficking that the times have changed and there will be no breathing space or any safe haven for them in Nigeria.

According to him: “To those still involved in the illicit drug trade, we will persist in reminding them that times have changed. The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains unwavering in its commitment to providing the leadership and political will required to eradicate this menace.

‘How we intercepted cannabis inside mattresses’

Officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Tin Can Island Port Strategic Command, Lagos, have discovered a large quantity of exotic cannabis drugs hidden inside mattresses during a routine search of import containers.

According to the Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, the illicit consignment was a product of a meticulous search on containers from Montreal, Canada.

A total of 63.75 kilogrammes of cannabis indica were recovered during the operation.

Mitchell explained that the incessant interception of cannabis indica was due to the growing appetite of drug users for Canadian-grown cannabis over locally produced cannabis.

“We have observed a preference for imported cannabis over locally grown ones by drug users. The price of the imported drugs is also far higher, and that is the reason drug traffickers are desperate to smuggle the drugs into the country. This seizure was made possible through diligent surveillance and teamwork.”

Speaking further on how the seizure was made, Mitchell said that “as part of efforts to prevent the use of the Tin Can Island Port Strategic Command in illicit drug trafficking, our quest for drug interception was aptly rewarded when we uncovered 128 parcels of dried weeds inside a Montreal container. Three parcels of the drug were hidden in the trunk of a Toyota Venza, while 125 parcels were cleverly tucked away in two big mattresses. Officers had to cut open the mattresses to recover the hidden drugs.

  • NDLEA’s doggedness in drug fight

    NDLEA’s doggedness in drug fight

    • By Adekunbi Lawal

Sir: Week after week, we hear news of seizures of illicit drugs and the arrests of drug traffickers. This unending wave of arrests gives the public the impression that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is on a determined course to sanitise the country.

The way NDLEA officers unravel the disingenuous efforts made to conceal consignments of drugs is reassuring. No matter how clever traffickers may be in their attempts to smuggle drugs, the NDLEA is always one step ahead. The message is clear: the efforts of drug dealers will be thwarted, and their illicit activities will not go unnoticed.

One recent example that highlights the agency’s diligence occurred a few weeks ago, when a 42-year-old Angolan national attempted to smuggle 120 pellets of cocaine, weighing 1.829 kilograms, into Turkey via Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. The man, who claimed to be a businessman, ingested the drugs, but his plan was foiled by diligent NDLEA officers. Another noteworthy incident involved the interception of drug consignments concealed in creative ways—cocaine hidden in prayer beads, the soles of shoes, and packs of board games, all intended for export to Saudi Arabia. Similarly, other drugs were found in Vitamin C bottles and clothes, disguised in an attempt to be shipped to the United States. These examples demonstrate the lengths to which drug traffickers will go, but they also showcase the relentless determination of the NDLEA in combating these illegal activities.

No matter how cunning or innovative drug traffickers may be, the NDLEA should not be deterred. Their vigilance and expertise in detecting and dismantling these trafficking networks are commendable, but it is important to acknowledge that society must complement their efforts.

As responsible members of society, we must all play an active role in identifying and reporting any suspicious activities that may involve the cultivation, sale, or use of illicit drugs. By doing so, we can help prevent the destructive consequences these substances have on our communities, especially among young people, who are often the most vulnerable to the allure of experimentation.

Furthermore, it is essential that the government continues to offer its full support to the NDLEA in this fight. More can and should be done to strengthen the agency’s efforts. This includes improving the welfare of anti-narcotic officers, providing them with adequate motivation, and ensuring that they have access to the latest tools, equipment, and logistics. A well-equipped and motivated workforce is key to the NDLEA’s ongoing success in its mission to rid the country of the devastating effects of drug trafficking.

In conclusion, while the NDLEA’s efforts in the fight against drug trafficking deserve commendation, we must recognise that this battle is far from over. It requires the combined efforts of government agencies, law enforcement, and citizens to protect the future of our nation from the devastating consequences of drug abuse and trafficking. Only through continuous support for the NDLEA can we hope to achieve lasting success in this critical fight.

NDLEA arrests fleeing auto spare parts dealer over cocaine smuggling attempt

Barely three weeks after launching a manhunt, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested an auto spare parts dealer Levi Chidiebele Ubodoeze, over a recent attempt to export two kilogrammes of cocaine concealed in vehicle propellers to Angola.

Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, Femi Babafemi, made this known yesterday.

In a statement, Babafemi said following the seizure of the cocaine consignment at a logistics company in Aspanda, Trade Fair Complex, Ojo, Lagos on February 21,  contacts were made with Angolan authorities, who, in turn, arrested the supposed recipient of the illicit drug in Angola, after which the identity of the sender was unravelled.

According to the statement, as a result, NDLEA operatives  on March 6 tracked Ubodoeze to his house in Ago Palace way, Okota, Isolo, Lagos where he was caught in a KIA Sport Utility Vehicle trying to escape.

According to Babafemi, the cocaine consignment was intercepted at a logistics company in Aspanda, Trade Fair Complex, Ojo, Lagos, on February 21, 2025.

Swift collaboration with Angolan authorities led to the arrest of the intended recipient in Angola, ultimately revealing the sender’s identity.

Following intelligence gathering, NDLEA operatives tracked Ubodoeze to his residence in Ago Palace Way, Isolo, Lagos, on March 6, 2025.

He was apprehended while attempting to flee in a KIA Sport Utility Vehicle.
