NDLEA intercepts Qatar-bound illicit drugs concealed in African salad, dried vegetables

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has detained a 35-year-old lady, Chidinma Chinenye Agbazue for attempting to export 20 parcels of cannabis sativa weighing 10.70 kilograms concealed in African salad popularly called Abacha and dried vegetables to Doha, Qatar through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos state.

Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters Abuja, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Babafemi said NDLEA officers at the Lagos airport working in partnership with men of the Department of State Security had on Thursday 28th March intercepted Chidinma, an outbound passenger from Lagos to Doha, on Qatar Airways during clearance of passengers at the screening point of terminal 11 of the MMIA.

He said preliminary investigation revealed that Chidinma was based in Qatar but returned to Nigeria last December for Christmas celebration.

According to the statement, she said preparatory to her return to Doha, she was lodged at Club Dice Hotel in Ikotun area of Lagos where the consignment was handed over to her for trafficking to the Arab country.

He said recovered from them were 842,560 pills of opioids especially tramadol in addition to 15 litres of codeine syrup and 596 grams of Molly.

The NDLEA spokesman said attempts by Okeke to bribe the NDLEA officers with N5 million cash was rebuffed while the money was documented as part of exhibits to prosecute the suspects in court.

    • Drug peddling is attracting foul new innovation

It is a busy time for the operators of the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). Their success is cheering but it is a signal that all is not well in the country with drug use. We should celebrate that our borders are closely marked, but it is no joy that many are defiant enough to try again. Who knows if some have, by their cunning and persistence, sneaked through?

Parts of the plot seem routine until we realise some of it that might be comical if not fatal. We can give the NDLEA thumbs up for intercepting drug consignments in car compartments, unearthing it in transport bus tyres, recovering 426,888 pills of tramadol, including in Adamawa and Bauchi states. Kudos also for destroying over three tons of cannabis in Edo Forest.

But they are indications that psychological and social demons assail the country, especially the young. The story of banditry and Boko Haram abound with the roles hard drugs are playing in fuelling their mayhem and perverted gallantry.

It gets absurd when the news headlines focus on the two Nigerians who put a new twist in its social and domestic uses like 20-year-old hair stylist Josephine Odunu and 30-year-old dispatch rider Adesemi Ikporo did. According to news report, Odunu is not just a hair stylist; her profits surged from selling drugs. She does not sell it raw but as a locally made pastry called chin chin.

Ikporo may dispatch other articles but rides high on retailing chin chin. And who do they sell this normally tasty chin chin to? Students and happy people at social parties. The NDLEA has arrested them and put paid to their reptilian innovation.

But what brought a society to such a pass in which to make money, some individuals are ready to damage the souls of children? It reflects the level of cold indifference that the yearn for profits has driven this society. They know chin chin is cheap and an easy way to snack. The children also know it is harmless, apparently. So, the makers and traders take advantage of cost. That is a way of differentiating themselves from other sellers. But cost is not enough.

The other area is how it makes them feel. Lacing the article with cannabis will give the unsuspecting children a feeling of elevated power, a false compulsion to act with defiance. We have no report what this turned the victims to in their studies, sports and other recreational activities in school. More importantly, how did they relate to their parents? How much havoc has happened in the Yenagoa communities where they consumed that product? That ought to be researched.

They also sold them at social parties. This might involve young and old, and we are not sure how it has turned out by way of crimes, domestic fights and turbulence, relationship between neighbours and even at places of work.

While we commend the NDLEA for stopping this illicit market, we also call for efforts towards counselling the community. They have to identify all who have eaten chin chin of drugs, administer tests and trace their behaviours since they started to consume the substance.

That is a first and necessary step towards cleansing. Discontinuing the traffic is not enough. Did some consumers desire it like addiction? Is there evidence of withdrawal syndromes? That is the story in Yenagoa. But with the frequent reports of nabbed traffickers of drugs, especially tramadol, we need wholesale programmes to identify victims and separate them for cleansing.

It is clear poverty is not the only problem. Nor is it disease or illiteracy. Drug abuse must rank among those at the top.

NDLEA, Delta govt have abandoned my infant son, father of victim shot by operatives

Fidelis Omhonria, the father of the two-year-old boy murdered by National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) operatives, has cried out over the deteriorating health condition of his infant son, injured in last year’s shooting incident in Okpanam, Delta state.

The traumatised father, who spoke to reporters, on Tuesday, March 26, in Asaba, Delta Capital, lamented that his family has been abandoned despite promises by the Delta State government and anti-drug agency to take responsibility for the infant’s treatment abroad.

He said: “Today makes it 8 months and 13 days since the incident happened. I have since buried my two-year-old son and the other boy, whose left eye was affected by shrapnel is going through severe pain without medical attention as promised.

“The state government earlier said that they would take care of the medical bills and asked me to list what I have spent which I did

“When the chairman of NDLEA visited us on November 2nd, 2023, he promised to take responsibility for the medical bills and to fly the child to the United of America for treatment.

“And said there was no need for a court case and that they would fly the child for treatment. So, we buried the two-year-old boy on December 13, 2023, because the NDLEA has assured us to expedite the visa for my son Eromonsele Omhonria’s treatment in the US.

“I was the one that applied for the visa which the state government had written to the US embassy that they would take up the responsibility.

“The state gave us a copy of the letter but to date, we have not heard anything from the state government. I was referred to the Commissioner for Health and I met him, he promised to get back to me but to date, nothing has been done.

“When the NDLEA chairman visited, he attached a protocol officer to us for the process of taking the child to the US for treatment.

“We submitted all documents to the NDLEA protocol officer to process, and since then, they have been telling us one story or the other.

“The NDLEA later asked us to move the visa application from Abuja to the Lagos US embassy which we did but yet nothing happened.

“Because of their delay, one of my family members now helped in January 2024, to get a visa appointment on February 2, 2024. And only for NDLEA to call us on February 1, around 8:30 pm that our visa appointment was February 2, we let them know that our family member has gotten the date for us but they said we should go that they would send a letter across to the embassy.

“We went for the interview and the US Consulate asked who was funding the trip and we told them that it is NDLEA, they told us that there was no Federal Government, Delta State Government, or NDLEA in their system and so, they denied us the visa and told us to re-apply.

“After I left the embassy, I told the NDLEA Chairman and he asked us to reapply as we were told and that the expenditure for the trip to Abuja during the Visa interview would be paid, which they did.

“Now, I have reapplied again. I have spent much because of the dollar rate, the embassy had given us on April 2, 2025. My son’s health is deteriorating as a result of the delay in the treatment.”

United Nations assures NDLEA of support as Amina Mohammed visits Marwa

The United Nations has assured the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of support to succeed in its onerous task of curbing the menace of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in Nigeria.

The deputy secretary general of the UN, Amina J Mohammed, gave the assurance when she paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) at the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja on Monday, March 25.

She was accompanied by the United Nations resident coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall.

The UN deputy scribe said the global body is willing to enhance the impact of the significant efforts of the Agency.

She said: “On behalf of the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, we want to reconfirm our support from the United Nations to the work of this agency. It is extremely important, this is coming at a time when the challenges are more complex.

“The chairman has spoken about the needs, and we are very pleased to hear that everyone is doing a very good job and we hope that we can increase the impact.

“From our conversation with the Chairman, the issue is clear, it involves many other sectors. We talked about the root causes, and the escape is often drugs.

“That is why it is important for us to work with the rest of the government to ensure that all people have a right to their dignity. I see this agency as a symbol that wants to do the job, to succeed. This is a challenge we will be here to support.”

Mohammed commended Marwa for providing NDLEA with exemplary leadership.

“I just have to commend the leadership you have here, the leadership we have known for a very long time. When we were much younger, we used to look up to the Soldier Marwa, who led from the front with example and discipline. We see the discipline now in your officers as we walk into the office and there is a difference. We need more of that.

“This is the only country that we have. And we must harness the potential through the work that we do. What we want to do is support with whatever that we can, to ensure a greater and better Nigeria that takes its position not only in Africa but worldwide”, she added.

Marwa appreciated the UN deputy scribe for the visit.

“We’re indeed pleased to have you visit us. This will go on record as the first visit in history to NDLEA by the highest echelon of the United Nations.

“We not only commend you for this but also in equal measure your string of impressive achievements, whether when you served as Minister at home or at the global stage where you’re currently serving as Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations.

“Thank you for being a shining light and a good ambassador of not only Nigeria but the African continent and indeed the black race world over,” he said.

Marwa noted that the twin problems of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking remain one of the ferocious threats to public health and national security despite the significant efforts being made by NDLEA in the areas of drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction in Nigeria.

“With the dire consequences of the menace steering us in the face, upon my assumption of leadership in 2021, we have moved swiftly to halt the spiral turn of the situation and between then and end of 2023, we have been able to make over 48,157 arrests including 46 drug barons with a total of 8,350 already successfully prosecuted and convicted while 7,500 tons of illicit drugs were seized from them and 1,057 hectares of cannabis farms destroyed deep in the forests in parts of the country.

“On the other part of our mandate, we have equally put in place a strong mechanism to raise public awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. This we do through our War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, a social advocacy campaign initiative. In addition, we provide treatment and counselling to users in our commands across the country, through which we have been able to counsel and treat over 29, 400 persons within the same period.

“This is why your coming today affords us the opportunity to share with you some of the things you can use your good office and the huge platform of the UN to facilitate to enhance what we are doing and plan to achieve.

“They include but are not limited to the following: Conduct of another drug use survey that will give us a better assessment of where we’re now six years after the last survey; procurement of mechanical tools to destroy cannabis farms as against the current manual system; procurement of incinerators to destroy tons of illicit drugs seized as against the current open air burning which is not good for the environment and public health; support for our Alternative Development programme and modern forensic equipment needed in our old and new labs”, he said.

  • NDLEA alerts public on new scam

NDLEA alerts public on new scam

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has alerted the public especially those who have loved ones abroad to a new scheme by scammers who impersonate its officers and call unsuspecting citizens to inform them of the arrest of their relatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Ikeja Lagos or any other international airport with illicit drugs upon arrival in the country.

Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters Abuja, Femi Babafemi, gave the warning in a statement on Saturday.

He said after throwing the family members into panic, the scammers then make a demand of millions to facilitate the release of such persons from NDLEA custody.

“We have thwarted a number of such bids in the past when the family members called the Agency’s official contacts for help or clarification.

“At the moment, there is one of such scenarios the Agency has just investigated. In this case, the picture of a Nigerian man based in the US is being circulated with an audio of a purported NDLEA officer negotiating the payment of N5 million with a female relative for the release of the US-based Nigerian man purportedly arrested at the Lagos airport on Friday 22nd March upon his arrival with a ‘contraband’

“Just like in previous instances, our investigation has also shown that the current incident is the work of scammers.

“No NDLEA officer is involved in the audio conversation and the person whose photo is attached to the audio recording being circulated is not in our custody at MMIA or any of our Commands either as at yesterday or any other day. The family members involved in this case are advised not to part with their hard-earned money to scammers.

“Nigerians with loved ones abroad are also urged to keep discussions on travel plans of their relatives to themselves to avoid the hijack of such by criminal elements for devious schemes,” Babafemi said.

Hotelier sues NDLEA for N100m over destruction of property

A hotelier, Ayobami Idowu, has sued the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for N100 million over alleged invasion and destruction of his home and place of business.

Idowu is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of D&G Motor Dealer Enterprises Limited and D&G Hotel, Event and Suites, Ijaiye, Ojokoro, Lagos.

He filed the suit at Lagos High Court in the Epe Judicial Division.

The respondents are the Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Brigadier-General Buba Marwa (rtd); the Commander, NDLEA, Lagos Command; and Adekunle Oduola of the Lagos Command.

Through his legal team led by Chief M. Aliu Complete Solicitors and Advocate, Idowu alleged endless invasion of his home and place of business and threat of arrest and detention by the respondents.

The invasion, he said, was “without any legal justification” and is therefore “unlawful, illegal, barbaric and unconstitutional”.

He said it violated his right to personal liberty, the dignity of the human person, freedom of movement, freedom of association, and right to own movable and immovable property anywhere in Nigeria as enshrined under Sections 34, 35, 40 and 41 of the 1999 Constitution and other extant laws.

The applicant claimed that the molestation, harassment, humiliation, degrading and inhuman treatment of him, his wife, children, relatives and staff members for no justifiable reason by the team led by the third respondent, acting under the instruction of the first and second respondents, violated his rights.

Idowu prayed for a declaration that the unlawful and illegal routine invasion, unlawful search and ransacking of his home and place of business by men of the NDLEA and his being extorted N1million is utterly barbaric, archaic, unspeakable and preposterous.

He sought an order restraining all the respondents from unlawfully invading and ransacking, arresting and detaining, subjecting him to any form of humiliation, molestation, harassment, and laying siege at his home and place of business.

He asked for N100 million in damages and a public apology in two national newspapers for putting him through psychological, mental and emotional trauma.
