The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Thursday in Abuja, destroyed over 30 tons of illicit drugs and substances worth an estimated street value of N2.58 billion.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the drugs were seized by operatives of the FCT Command of the NDLEA and that of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Speaking at the event, NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, said that the agency would not relent in pursuing its War Against Drug Abuse and encouraging citizens to take ownership of the drug war.

Represented by Deputy Commander General of Narcotics, Mrs Victoria Egbase, the chairman said that the event was a testimony of the agency’s resolve to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Nigerians.

”Today’s public destruction of over 30 tons of illicit drugs and substances, further buttresses that call to action.

“The break down of these drugs are 72.156kgs of Cocaine, 4.3838 Kgs of Heroin, 3.9kgs of Ephedrine, 20.185kg of Methamphetamine, 30,440.42kgs of Cannabis.

“These drugs are valued at an estimated N2,580,209,783.00 in street value,” he said.

Marwa said that the sheer bulk of the drugs destroyed was a reminder about the magnitude of the drug problem in the country.

”Just two of the facts are enough to cause a sober reflection. One: 14.3 million Nigerians aged 15-64 years, are abusing drugs. That is the size of the population of some countries.

”And two, 10.6 million of our compatriots abuse cannabis, which makes Nigeria one of the countries with the highest number of people addicted to the psychotropic plant.”

He said that ”the statistics are worrisome when you look beyond the figures to their health and security implications.

“While the larger society may not have an immediate grasp of the import of the drug facts and figures of Nigeria, those of us at NDLEA can read the handwriting on the wall as per the dire implications of the findings from the survey.

“That is why since the coming on board of the current leadership of NDLEA in January 2021, we have doubled down on our efforts and now aggressively pursue our mandate.

“To this end, NDLEA has been effectively repositioned more than ever before to curtail the production, cultivation, processing, importation, exportation, sales, trafficking and abuse of controlled drugs and illicit substances.”

Tsakuwa said that the commands successfully convicted 306 drug dealers comprising 294 males and 12 females to various jail terms within the period.

He appreciated the Nigeria Army, Customs, Police, DSS, Civil Defence, Correctional Service, FRSC and Immigration for their support in apprehending suspects.

NGO team up with NDLEA, others to fight drug abuse

A non-governmental organisation, Re-Orientation Advocacy of Nigeria RAN has teamed up with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to fight drug abuse.

Executive Director, Re-Orientation Advocacy of Nigeria, Charles Folayan said a joint task committee on drug prevention, treatment and care programme has been set up to this effect.

Folayan, who is the Coordinator of the task force, said, this was in line with President Bola Tinubu’s administration statement and commitment to tackling the drug abuse menace and its associated consequences in all forms by working with civil stakeholders who are compassionate and eager to take urgent actions necessary to save and protect our communities, societies and all our people.

He said this during the first joint stakeholder’s engagement after unveiling the task force in Abuja.

He said the coalition was to bridge the gap and disconnect between stakeholders working on drug demand reduction and to build collaboration for holistic evidence based interventions on drug prevention, treatment and care.

Other members of the task force are: the Federal Ministry of Health, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency NPHCDA, the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control NAFDAC, the Nigeria Police Force NPF, the National Agency on Control of AIDS NACA and the Nigerian Correctional Service NCS, Annmom Foundation USA among others.

He said the joint task force was in agreement with the resolution of the House of Representatives for Nigeria to declare an emergency on the drug abuse menace.

He noted that research showed that drug abuse was a major challenge confronting Nigeria, saying: “it is already a menace among the youth and women. And the precursor to all forms of indiscipline, lawlessness and crimes which have resulted into huge economic, social, political and environmental problems.”

He lamented that the streets of many towns and cities in Nigeria are littered with youth and women immersed in drug and substance abuse activities.

“These experiences predispose them to armed robbery, vandalism, sexual assault, insurgency, banditry, domestic abuse and violence, HIV and AIDS, accidents among others,” he said.

While commending the effort of the various stakeholders so far, he noted that solving the challenges of drug abuse in Nigeria demanded a workable strategy and team work.

NDLEA alerts public on online sale of substance, drugs

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) yesterday said the current trend in vogue was online sale of drugs and substances.

The agency said the trend was a new dimension in drug and substance abuse problem.

Kwara State Commander of the NDLEA, Ibrahim Mohammed, said this in Ilorin at an event organised by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).

He described the menace as a global phenomenon, common among the youth.

Mohammed spoke on ‘Uprise in drug abuse, role of parents.’

Said he: “We call it darknet where drugs are being sold online without the seller and the buyer knowing each other. All they need is contact and they make the call and the substance is delivered. It’s very common here now. What we’ve been doing is to see how to intercept them. Especially, the waybill coming from neighbouring states through some commercial vehicles. We’ve intensified our patrol system around the state. We’re gathering intelligence and we’re making very good use of it. We’ve intercepted quite a number of them through control delivery.

“We know as the Yuletide is approaching, a lot of such will be happening. Thank God, the state governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, is being proactive. He has actually supported us with provision of infrastructure to tackle the menace.”

The NDLEA boss said prevalence of drug use, drug abuse and drug addiction had led to increasing crime rate in the society, adding that there was no crime without drug undertone.

He suggested some protective factors against the menace such as family harmony and bonding, affection and love for family members, proactive and positive parenting.

He advised that parents should not be judgmental, but should ensure effective monitoring of their children, among others.

FIDA Chairperson in the state, Gloria Okoduwa, said phones had taken children away from many parents, adding that family discussion had been neglected.

She announced plans by FIDA to take campaign against drug abuse and its effects to major markets and other public places in the state in order to drive down the message, saying many parents have failed the generation with their poor parenting attitude.

“I think this generation is wiser than us. They go all out to explore and parents are rather too busy with career and businesses. We need to come together and fight the monster that wants to take our children away from us. There are so many youths languishing in rehabilitation centres because of this monster called drugs”.

She encouraged close monitoring of parents on their children, saying the current socioeconomic situations had made parents not to have time for their children any longer.

Chairperson of the FIDA Week 2023 Committee, Hajia Muinat Adeleye, who is also the zonal legal officer of the NDLEA, Zone I, Oyo State, lamented that drug abuse is rampant in the country.

“Almost every home is affected. Right from primary, secondary schools and university, drug abuse is the trend. So, as mothers and as lawyers, we have to lend our voices. There’s campaign against drug abuse all around, but it’s like the society is yet to come to terms with how grievous the problem is to the society. You hear of alarming rate of kidnapping, armed robbery, rape, terrorism, disrespecting parents, truancy. All are because of influence of drug.

“Parents should pay more attention to their children, rather than putting all their concentration on their career and businesses. All parents should come back home because if our future is gone, we may no longer have future to hold on to”, she said.
