Stay away from drug abuse, NAFDAC warns women

The National Food and Drugs Administration and Control ( NAFDAC ) has warned women against drug abuse.

Mrs Roseline Ajayi, the Deputy Director and Kwara State Coordinator of NAFDAC gave the warnings while speaking with newsmen on Tuesday in Ilorin.

According to her, the abuse of drugs is becoming prevalence among women.

“I have heard the story that drug abuse is quite prevalence among ladies and I think it is about the environment where they live.

“In an environment where alcohol is consumed freely, where you have frustration, joblessness and pressure in the home-front, people tend to take solace in something and they go after doing something that will make them forget about their sorrow,’’ she said.

The coordinator said that the agency discovered that soft drinks were being laced with drugs such as tramadol and codeine cough syrup before being taken.

“Because of the stigma that women might face if they come out openly that they take drugs, they do it clandestinely by lacing soft drinks with hard drugs to prevent people from suspecting them,’’ he said.

Ajayi said the agency had stepped up its awareness campaign against drug abuse and misuse through enlightenment on dangers and consequences of drugs abuse.

According to her, the agency is ready to partner with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ( NDLEA ) to effectively combat drug-related offences.

She urged Nigerians to uphold family ties and values, adding that parents should watch and relate well with their children while giving them the needed support.

Ajayi also spoke on the need for government to step up effort to stem the rate of unemployment so that the rate of drug
    abuse could reduce.

“When youths are gainfully engaged, they will be busy; their minds will not go into illicit drugs consumption,’’ she said.

He said the operatives of the agency confiscated the sacks which contained 272 kilogrammes of Indian hemp on Thursday, at Ifewara town in Atakunmosa East Local Government Area of the state.

“Intelligence on this seizure was given by good people of the state and we solicit for more of this from them. Investigation has, however, commenced on the seizure.

Rep canvasses better funding of NDLEA to win drug war

A member of the House of Representatives from Ekiti State, Mr. Kehinde Agboola, has advocated a better funding of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to win the war against drug abuse and trafficking.

Agboola, who represents Oye/Ikole Federal Constituency, called for the movement of NDLEA from the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Justice to the presidency to ensure efficiency and better funding.

The federal lawmaker is the House Committee Deputy Chairman on Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes. He spoke with reporters in his hometown, Odo Oro in Ikole Local Government Area.

Agboola noted that while the Department of State Services (DSS) and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which are under the presidency are enjoying better funding, NDLEA under the Justice Ministry remains underfunded.

He criticised the plan to withdraw $1 billion from the Excess Crude Account to tackle insurgency after the federal government had claimed that Boko Haram militants have been defeated.

Agboola said: “If that was true, why was the president seeking approval for $1b withdrawal from the ECA to fight insurgents? We can infer that this was an evidence of failure in Boko Haram fight, because they had earlier said they have won the battle.

“So, I align with governors Ayodele Fayose and Nyesom Wike that the deductions from ECA should be deployed to fight hunger in their own states as well.”

  • One NDLEA operative killed, three others injured in Kano

One NDLEA operative killed, three others injured in Kano

An Operative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) was killed and three injured yesterday in Kano.

NDLEA Chairman Col. Mohammad Mustapha Abdullah (retired), who unveiled the development in Kano posited that the unfortunate incident occurred when the patrol team approached a road block.

Although, the chairman said it was not certain whether or not the perpetrators were drug traffickers, insisted the attack would not deterred the agency’s war against drug peddlers in the country.

Narrating the development further, Commander, Kano state command of the NDLEA Alh. Hamza Umar told journalists that the late officer who was shut from behind had the bullets gushed out through his chest had since buried according to Islamic rite at his Zuru in Kebbi state.

Mohammad, who was on emergency visit to Kano command, regretted the loss of the slain officer who he said could have survived the stray bullets if the agency was adequately kitted with bullet proof.

He said the ugly trend has further revealed how NDLEA was poorly funded and acutely lacking of needed logistics.

The NDLEA while consoling the men and officers of the command over the attack wants the operatives to remain resolute on the front line, reminding that their responsibility was a clarion call to the nation and humanity.

According to Mohammad, “ We have lost a senior and gallant office in active service and even though loss of life is certain, this one is sudden and painful but that will not stop us from the fight.

“Although the men were on routine operation but  if they were adequately equipped perhaps they would have won the gun dwell with the unknown gunmen. But again this incident will further enable us to continue our consistent call on the federal government for better funding of the agency.

  • Suspected drug traffickers kill NDLEA officer in Kano

Suspected drug traffickers kill NDLEA officer in Kano

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ( NDLEA ), retired Col. Mustapha Abdullah, says one of its officers in Kano command has been killed by some suspected drug traffickers.

Abdullah disclosed this on Friday in Kano when he addressed officers and men of the agency.

He sympathised with them and the family of the victim.

The chairman said that two other officers attacked by the suspects were receiving treatment.

He described the attack as an attempt to discourage the agency in its efforts toward ensuring that the country is free from the activities of drug traffickers.

“The officer that was killed, Mr Tanko Amfani  was in company of his colleagues while coming back from Rano Local Government Area on a mission to arrest some suspected drug traffickers.

“But unfortunately, they were attacked at the early hours of Thursday,” he said.

Abdullah said that only someone who is on hard drugs can carry out such attack on the officers.

“It would not discourage us from discharging our responsibilities.

“Therefore, I am calling on our officers not to relent in their efforts”, he said.

According to Abdallah, the agency has in recent times lost three other officers at Okene, in Kogi State

He commiserated with the families of the four officers who lost their lives in Kogi and Kano while serving the nation.

Abdallah assured the personnel that the Federal Government was doing everything possible to equip the officers more and also ensure their welfare in order to boost their morale.

He said that more personnel would soon be recruited by the agency to strengthen its manpower.

In his remarks, the NDLEA Commander in Kano, Alhaji Hamza Umar said that the riffles used by the attackers were not locally-made but AK 47 guns which are not ordinary.

He appealed to the general public to continue to give the agency all the necessary support in order to succeed in the fight against drug trafficking.

  • NDLEA arrests 619 suspected drug traffickers in Kano

NDLEA arrests 619 suspected drug traffickers in Kano

The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said on Friday the agency arrested 619 suspected drug traffickers in Kano State in 2017.

The state Commandant of the agency, Alhaji Hamza Umar, disclosed this at a news conference organised by the command in collaboration with Civil Society Organisations.

Umar said the suspects were arraigned before the Federal High Court in the state where 165 of them were sentenced to various prison terms.

According to him, the command also intercepted more than 17.1 tons of illicit drugs across the state, including over 344.9 grams of cocaine and over 88.2 grams of heroin, within the period under review.

“From January to date, we also intercepted over 5.5 tons of Canabis and over 11 tons of Rochi,” the NDLEA commandant said.

    •Confiscates 2,125.204Kg of drugs

The Gombe State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said it has arrested 86 suspected persons and confiscated 2,125.204Kg of hard drugs in the state.

The State Commander, Aliyu Adole said 1,293.424 kg of hard drugs were made of Indian hemp while psychotropic substance made up the other 831.78kg.

He spoke in Gombe while commenting on the activities of the agency in the state during the outgoing year.

Adole said this year’s arrests reflected increase in the quantity of drugs and a decrease in the number of persons

He said the impounded cannabis increased because the command was able to burst the syndicate of individual farmers, who plant Indian hemp in the villages bordering other states.

He said the period in review indicated that about 84 percent drugs seized were found with people from 21 to 40 years old as against 80 percent the same age bracket that was arrested last year.

He said 46 of those arrested had been convicted and the other 40 cases were pending while 14 clients (drug addicts) were being treated

The NDLEA Commander said furnishing their rehabilitation centre and the fact that the agency is still housed in a rented property remained their greatest challenge

He appreciated those that have thus far given the agency useful information but observed that people were usually hesitant about providing information because those dealing on drugs buy their ways into the people’s hearts through magnanimous gestures

“Most people are hiding this information because the drug peddlers are philanthropists; they give them money and so they not will release information about them. That is our real challenge; we need information to nab the drug peddlers,” Adole said.
