NDLEA arrests two suspects, recovers weapons in Jigawa

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested two suspects in connection with drug-peddling in Jigawa.

The Commander of the agency in the state, Mrs. Josephine Obi, made the disclosure at press briefing on Thursday in Dutse.

She said the command also recovered one locally-made double-barrel gun and some drugs from the suspects.

Obi said the suspects were arrested on Sunday at about 8:00 p.m. by officers on routine patrol along Kano-Ringim road.

She said two tablets of Tramadol, one wrap of Indian hemp, two daggers and several charms were also recovered from the suspects.

“These suspects were arrested by our men last Sunday along Kano-Ringim road during a random stop-and-search on commercial vehicles.

“In the first instance, only two tablets of Tramadol and one wrap of Indian hemp were recovered from them.

“But, further check led to the discovery of one locally-made double-barrel gun with one cartridge fully loaded, two daggers and several charms.

“This is why we keep saying that there is always a close link between the use of drugs and commission of crime,” she said.

The commander said the suspects would be handed over to the police for further action.

  • Court to hear case against NDLEA chair October 18

A Lagos High Court has fixed hearing for October 18 in a suit filed by a businessman, Sadiq Eldau, against the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) chairman, Col. Muhammad Abdallah (rtd), over the ownership of a land in Lekki.

Eldau is praying Justice Sherifat Solebo for a declaration, among others, that the property designated as Block 114, Plot 1, Lekki Scheme 1, Victoria Island, was properly and lawfully acquired by him.

Joined as defendants in the suit are Aboki Abdullahi, Innocent Achi, the Registrar of Titles, Land Bureau Services of Lagos State and Incorporated Trustee of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

Eldau, in his April 28, last year amended statement of claims, averred that Abdullah was the allottee of the property.

The allottee, he claimed, sold it to him through his agent who is Abdullahi.

He stated that the interest of Achi and RCCG, rivalled his claim to ownership of the land.

He explained that sometime in 2005, Abdullahi approached him with an offer to sell the property, saying that the NDLEA boss was deceased, but survived by his widow and one Mrs Maria Abdallah.

Eldau averred that Abdullahi informed him that Mrs Maria Abdallah by a March 22, 2004 Power of Attorney authorised the sale of the land for N35 million, which he paid and was given a Deed of Assignment as evidence of the transaction.

He proceeded to “invest heavily on the land by putting it in proper shape, securing it and also applied for the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O)”.

Eldau averred that since 2005, he was in peaceful possession of the property until sometime in 2009, when the third respondent Achi appeared and claimed ownership of the land.

Achi, Eldau averred, informed him that the NDLEA boss was not dead and was the one who sold the land to him.

The matter was reported at a police station, where all the interested parties, except the agent, met.

He alleged further that the ownership of the lanf was yet to be resolved before the NDLEA boss sold the land again to RCCG.

However, the NDLEA boss in his statement of defence denied some of the plaintiff’s claims.

Abdallah said he neither instructed the agent (Abdullahi) to sell the property on his behalf nor did he give the agent title documents.

He averred that it was at the police station, that he found out about the falsified probate paper kept and used by the agent to sell the land.

The NDLEA boss averred further that Mrs. Maria Abdallah, who purportedly authorised the sale of the land, was the agent’s wife and not his.

  • Drug traffickers make $320 billion yearly, says NDLEA

Drug traffickers make $320 billion yearly, says NDLEA

•Over 70,000 suspects arrested in two years

A drug trafficking syndicate generate $320 billion, approximately N115.2trillion annually, the National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said yesterday.

This is just as the agency said it arrested a total of 77,558 persons for drug trafficking between 2015 and last year.

NDLEA’s Chairman, Muhammad Abdallah, stated this at a-day seminar organised to commemorate the International Day Against Drug and Human Trafficking.

Abdallah, who was represented by Kayode Adeniyi, described drug trafficking as the most lucrative business, noting that its high profit was a motivating factor for the traffickers.

The event, which held at the Renaissance Hotel, Isaac John, Ikeja, was attended by senior police officers, operatives of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons  (NAPTIP) and private security practitioners, among others.

Abdallah said: “The NDLEA first discovered a methamphetamine laboratory at Maza-Maza area of Lagos in 2011 and till date, 12 other laboratories have been discovered in Lagos, Anambra and Delta states.

“Of the arrested 77,558 drug traffickers, 72,735 are males and 4,823 females. So, you can see that the business of drug trafficking is not gender-based.

“It is very painful that Nigeria has been implicated as a source, transit and destination point for drugs and human trafficking.”

According to Abdallah, all hands must be on deck to check the menace, urging other security agencies to corporate by sharing intelligence.

The chairman of the event, Wale Olaoye, noted that human trafficking would surpass illegal arms sale if nothing was done to contain it.

Olaoye, who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Halogen Security, said: “We are looking to change the narratives as Nigeria tops other countries in production and seizure of hard drugs. Nigeria also has the highest number of persons serving jail terms for drug offences in the world, which should be of great concern to us.

“The laws governing human and drug trafficking needs to be made stiffer because fines no longer make them effective to check the menace. There is need for a robust and effective border control system.”

Commissioner of Police (CP) Fatai Owoseni called for an overhaul of the adoption system in place.

Owoseni, who was represented by the Area D Commander, Akinbayo Olasuji, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), called for attitudinal change.
