  • Bricklayer arrested with 2.07kg of cocaine

    The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Friday arrested a 46-year-old bricklayer from Anambra, who attempted to smuggle 2.07kg of cocaine into the country.

    A statement by the Spokesman of the NDLEA, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the suspect was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, with 83 wraps of substance that had tested positive to cocaine.

    “He was detected with the help of scanning machines during the screening of passengers on an Asky Airline flight from Brazil,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the NDLEA spokesman as saying in the statement.

    Ofoyeju said the suspect was recruited by a drug cartel in Brazil and when arrested excreted one of the highest quantity of cocaine ingested at a time so far this year.

    “Preliminary investigations revealed that drug barons now have agents who move from village to village in search of drug mules.

    “They have several antics, which include promise of better job opportunities abroad. The case is under investigation.”

    Ofoyeju quoted the suspect, a bricklayer at Alor Village in Anambra, as saying he was lured to sell family land in order to travel abroad in search of job opportunities.

    “I got to Brazil on July 10 and all attempts to get a job were unsuccessful. That was when they sold the idea of drug trafficking to me.

    “Initially I objected but when there was no other option, I succumbed. They made me to swallow 83 wraps of cocaine which was detected by NDLEA officers,” he said.

     

  • NDLEA clears MBGN for Indonesia trip

    The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has cleared Nigeria’s most beautiful girl 2013, Miss Anna Ebiere Banner, for her trip to Jakarta, Indonesia, for the forthcoming Miss World Beauty contest.

    The beauty queen who visited the agency’s headquarters in Ikoyi Lagos was accompanied by the Principal Manager Human Resources of Silverbird Group, Emmanuel Amadi and Rights Acquisition Manager, Silverbird, Patricia Ndubuisi.

    NDLEA congratulated her for winning the 2013 beauty contest and wishes her success at the global beauty pageant.

    The warm regards of the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Ahmadu Giade was conveyed by the Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Ofoyeju Mitchell.

    He said, “On behalf of management, I welcome you to the agency’s headquarters. This crown is well deserved and I congratulate you for being the best by winning the 2013 beauty contest. I wish you flying colours at the Miss World Beauty Pageant. I am optimistic that you will fly the country’s flag high above others and ultimately make us proud.”

    He added that Banner’s request for visa clearance certificate was approved on merit having met the stipulated requirements.

    NDLEA discovers another abandoned cocaine, arrests four

    Few weeks after officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) discovered 5.9kg of abandoned cocaine inside industrial equipment, another cocaine shipment has been abandoned at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

    The cocaine which weighed 4.6kg was hidden inside flasks packed with baby items. Like the first consignment, it originated from Panama, Central America on board a KLM flight.

    The agency also arrested four suspected drug traffickers who were found with narcotics. A total seizure of 12.455kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of 137 million naira was made.

    The Chairman of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, disclosed that the abandoned cocaine and other arrests have shown that drug traffickers are having difficulties bringing in their drugs into the country.

    “No drug cartel will abandon drugs knowing how much the drugs cost. Narcotics are very expensive and for drug traffickers to abandon their drugs shows the level of security alertness at the nation’s entry points.

    “The two abandoned cocaine seizures came from Panama. Both shipments are being investigated and we hope to get those that are behind the importation.” Giade stated.

    The NDLEA boss also tasked anti-narcotic operatives to remain vigilant as ever and detect more drugs in the days ahead.

     

     

  • NDLEA finds Cocaine in ceramics, buttons

    Suspects says they could not resist the monetary offers to carry the drug

    Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have discovered cocaine industrially concealed inside ceramics meant for interior decoration and buttons.

    The discovery was made at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos when officers broke the ceramic ornaments.

    Two suspected drug traffickers who were arrested in connection with the illegal import from Brazil said that they could not resist the offer made to them by their sponsors.

    According to the NDLEA Airport Commander, Hamza Umar, the suspects that imported the narcotics are Ogbonna Chukwuemeka Moses, 38 years old and Otum Godgive Osundu, 45 years old.

    In his words, “both suspects were found to have concealed cocaine in their luggage on their way from Brazil. Ogbonna Chukwuemeka had 1.435kg of cocaine hidden in ceramics and buttons while Otum Godgive packed 1.180kg of cocaine also in ceramics. They have given us useful information and investigation is in progress”.

    Ogbonna who hails from Enugu State had lived in Brazil for two years. He said that he was asked to bring samples of the ceramics and buttons to Nigeria for marketing.

    “I am married to a Brazilian woman who is pregnant for me. I agreed to bring the drugs because I need money to take care of my pregnant wife. They promised to pay me 10,000 dollars. It was a good offer and I had planned to use the money to take care of my family” Ogbonna stated.

    Otum Godgive who had lived in Brazil for five years said that he needed the money to settle down in Nigeria with his wife and four children.

    “I went to Brazil in search of greener pastures since 2007. I have tried my best but life has been difficult. They promised to pay me one million naira and I agreed to bring the drugs. I did not imagine that the drug will be detected but unfortunately the officers broke the ceramics and found the drug” he stated. He hails from Abia State.

    Chairman/Chief Executive of the Agency, Ahmadu Giade said that the Agency is prepared to uncover the tricks drug barons adopt in smuggling drugs.

    “The Agency is prepared to uncover various tricks that drug barons adopt in concealing drugs. This seizure will serve as a warning to the cartels that they are running out of tricks” Giade stressed.

    The suspects will soon be charged to court.

    NDLEA arrests father, son with cannabis in Jigawa

    The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday said it has arrested a father and his son over alleged possession of 2.65 kilogrammes of cannabis in Jigawa.

    The NDLEA state Commandant, Malam Ibrahim Abdu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse that the suspects were arrested in Ringim Local Government area of the state.

    He said the father had been arrested and convicted three times on similar offences but only spent few months in prison.

    Abdu also said the suspects were among the top three on the “NDLEA Most Wanted List” in the state.

    According to the commandant, the two suspects had earlier resisted arrest and engaged officers of the agency in physical combat on June 26.

    The commandant, however, said the suspects were arrested at their hide out after a week of intensive surveillance, adding that they would soon be charged to court.

    “We await the decision of the High Court on the person that had been brought before it four times, this man was convicted by the court before, but only spent few months in prison.”

    Abdu urged the general public to support the agency to rid the state of drug dealers.

     

  • Kwara NDLEA arrests businessman for alleged cocaine trafficking

    Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kwara State yesterday said they have arrested an Ilorin businessman for alleged cocaine trafficking.

    The state NDLEA Commander Segun Oke spoke in Ilorin, the state capital, when executive members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) visited him in his office.

    Oke said the cocaine weighed 1.7 kilogrammes and has a market value of about N20 million.

    The NDLEA commander said the arrest occurred last Tuesday, adding that the drug was concealed in an ordinary envelope with affixed postage stamps on it.

    According to him, the envelope containing the drug was delivered at an Ilorin motor park.

    Oke said operatives of the agency, who intercepted the parcel, called the names written on the envelope to collect it. The suspect was arrested in the process, he said.

    Oke described the seizure and arrest of the suspected trafficker as the first in the state.

    He urged the public to be on the alert and provide useful information on suspicious people and places to security agents.

    The NDLEA commander also regretted the new challenge of drug abuse in the state.

    Oke noted that some residents have resorted to getting high by using legal medication, such as cough syrup, with banned codeine.

    He said the development could destroy a generation, if not handled with the seriousness it deserves.

    The commander identified Oko Olowo and Babooko areas in Ilorin as major terminals where the nexus of drug distribution takes place.

    Cocaine weighing 5.9kg has been abandoned by a suspected drug trafficking syndicate.

    The drug was detected by men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.

    The drug which was hidden inside industrial equipment originated from Panama, Central America.

    The discovery was made as a suspected drug trafficker excreted 54 wraps of cocaine he ingested in Brazil.

    NDLEA Commander at the Lagos Airport, Mr Hamza Umar, said the cocaine consignment was left unclaimed.

    “The luggage was imported from Panama. When nobody came forward to claim ownership, we invited other security agencies and carried out search. It was in the process of search that the cocaine was discovered inside industrial equipment.

    “A 36 year old man, Onyema Watson Goodman Nnamdi was also apprehended in connection with the ingestion of 54 wraps of cocaine weighing 875 grammes. Both seizures weighed 6.775kg,” Hamza stated.

     

  • ‘Drug abuse causes infertility in men’

    An Assistant Director, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mrs. Stella Ngwoke has warned that drug abuse can lead to infertility in men.

    Ngwoke gave the warning at The Nation CampusLife workshop organized for campus journalists on Saturday in Lagos when she spoke on drug abuse.

    According to her, “consumption of the smallest dosage of cannabis can lead to inability of men to impregnate women and become fathers.”

    She also spoke on the effects of addiction to the drugs, saying that “these drugs have grave implications on its victim including lowering the body’s immune system response, thus subjecting it to any type of infection passing by.”

    “Inhalants such as petrol, correction fluid, hair spray and rubber solution for patching tyres can also be addictive when abused by constant and concentrated sniffing, ” she stated.

    Ngwoke urged participants to dissociate themselves from drug abuse and also discourage people around them from engaging in such actions.

    She stressed that marijuana does not have any medicinal value contrary to some claims. “Marijuana does not help the hair grow nor keep the body fresh. Instead, it causes irreparable damages to the brain and body cells.”

  • Anambra’s largesse lifts NDLEA

    The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is the latest law enforcement outfit to benefit from Anambra State’s generosity.

    The Governor Peter Obi administration has given out over 500 vehicles to security agencies in the last seven years.

    “We have given the police over 300 vehicles,” the governor said. “I have also given to the Army, Navy, schools, and many others.”

    Now, the NDLEA has taken its turn, receiving five brand new vehicles (four Hilux pickup vans and one 18-seater bus from the state. The agency’s chairman, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade received the vehicles.

    That was not all. Obi also handed over a N10m cheque to Giade, saying the gesture was to assist the anti-drug agency in its task in the state.

    He lamented the consequences of hard sin the society, noting their correlation with crime. The governor added, though, that bank robberies have become a thing of the past in the state while kidnapping, he said, has also reduced drastically.

    He, nevertheless, stressed the need for every tier of government to support the NDLEA in fighting trafficking and use of hard drugs.

    The governor assured that he will personally carry the campaign against hard drugs to all Nigerians in various parts of the world.

    He urged the people to join the battle to save the country from menace of drug addiction.

    Obi responded to remarks that his administration is presenting vehicles to organisations and individuals in the twilight of his tenure.

    He said that before his administration, Ministries in the state had no vehicles and that he started buying vehicles for different groups in the state over six years ago with a view to serving the people.

    The elated chairman of NDLEA, Alhaji Giade said the governor has made history by being the first in the country to give such support to the Agency since it came into existence. Giade added that Obi had set an example which governments at all levels should emulate.

    He said that despite the lean resources of the state, Obi still saved a lot of money to do extraordinary things while meeting up his other responsibilities.

    The NDLEA chief noted that the vehicles and financial support will boost the operational capacity of the Agency. He thanked the governor for his support.

    Gisade explained that all heinous crimes including armed robbery are associated with hard drugs and called for collective effort to win the war.

    The NDLEA boss disclosed that the Agency is sharing intelligence with other countries of the world resulting in many arrests and convictions.

    The state Commander, Momodu Sule described the vehicles and cash donation as a huge boost in performing more diligently, effectively and efficiently in his duties than ever.

    He said all efforts are geared towards trying to make the state drug-free, stressing further that that it has arrested 195 drug peddlers in Anambra, convicted two convicted even as several other cases are ongoing in the Federal High court.

    Momodu told Newsextra that they could not do anything without information from the members of the public, adding that cocaine, heroine and cannabis are rampant in Anambra. He said that they discovered in Nanka, Orumba North Local Government Area of the state a facility where one of the most potent but illicit drugs in the world-Metaphytamin- was being manufactured.

    Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Anambra State, Mr Egwuoyibo Okoye, in his remarks, commended Obi for his magnanimity in granting financial aid and also giving utility vehicles to federal agencies and parastatals in the state. He said the vehicles would aid the agency in their task to keep the society free of hard drugs.

  • Drug trafficking: Three cargo agents arrested at Lagos airport

    The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Wednesday arrested three cargo agents at the car park of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, over a consignment containing 1.630 kilograms of cannabis meant for export to China.

    NDLEA Commander at the Lagos airport, Mr. Hamza Umar gave the names of the suspect as Peter Madunatum (38), Stanley Chimezie( 23) and Nlemoha Collins Chijioke (34).

    According to Hamza, “Peter Madunatum and Stanley Chimezie were arrested when they gave a package containing 600 grammes to a passenger at the car pack.

    “The passenger insisted on a complete search before accepting the package. In the process, he discovered a parcel of cannabis and the agents took to their heels. They were however apprehended with the assistance of some police men at the car pack.”

    Hamza, who thanked the police officers for their prompt response, added that the third suspect Nlemoha Collins Chijioke was caught with 1.030kg of cannabis hidden inside a bag containing garri.

    In his statement, Nlemoha told investigators that he accepted the consignment because he had confidence on his colleague.

    . “I am a clearing agent at the Lagos airport. I collected a package from my colleague because I know him as a fellow clearing agent. It was during search that the drug was detected and I was arrested,” Nlemoha stated.

    The suspect lives in Lagos and is married with a child.
