  • ‘Mobile phones, bad posture increase neck, back pains’

prolonged use of mobile phones and bad posture at work places are responsible for the increase in neck and back pains among young adults in Nigeria, a physiotherapist, Mr Vincent Soetan, has said.

Soetan, a consultant at Vedic Lifecare Hospital, Lagos, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Lagos.

According to the Brand Executive, Physiocraft Allied Health Services, a medical outlet that cares patients with physical conditions, neck and back pains are becoming very common in the young working class.

He said: “Cervical spondylosis, generally called neck pain is actually prevalent, especially among the work force in corporate bodies such as bankers, teachers, nurses and health professionals.

“I see more people with spinal problems, especially among the working class.

“For every 10 referrals that visit the hospital, about five of them will have musculoskeletal disorders and if you probe further, it is related to work and lifestyle.

“Most times, the condition is due to very bad postures, even drivers experience a lot of neck pain. It is also very common because of the increased use of mobile phones and laptops; the posture we adopt while operating these gadgets is what affects the neck. Most times, people bend their necks so much for long hours while operating these gadgets. This, in the long run leads to neck pain over time that can also lead to other problems later in life.”

According to him, the challenges facing the condition include reduced productivity at work places and people visiting quacks and getting wrong treatment due to lack of awareness.

The physiotherapist said: “Most people are not aware of what to do and so they receive very wrong treatment for the condition. What people do most times is to massage and use some mentholated ointment on the neck and they think it solves the problem. The problem only persists and causes further damage which can lead to other problematic conditions,” he said.

The physiotherapist stressed the need to improve people’s knowledge on this from secondary to tertiary institutions.

“Postural correction should be taught in schools; children should be taught how to lift things and maintain an upright posture at an early age. We need to begin to include it in health education, because neck pain is a non-communicable disease and one of the leading causes of disability worldwide.

  • Going for NLNG’s neck

    Going for NLNG’s neck

As a child, one lesson my parents and teachers left me with is that you change or amend something to make it better. As  an adult, I have realised that not everybody shares this belief. At times, some people just want to change or amend things for reasons they may not even be proud to reveal. To justify their action, they will simply just look for a well-sounding excuse, which will carve them in the image of super heroes.

You may wonder: what is he rambling about? It is all about Tuesday’s action of the House of Representatives on the NLNG Act. The Act, which started out as a military decree, has been in existence for close to 30 years. The House of Representatives amended it on Tuesday. The Senate is expected to follow. When this is done, our jewel of inestimable value and Bonny Island’s dearest, the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited, will never be the same again.

Bonny Island, where NLNG is located, was without form until Shell the light. Mobil saw it later. The Nigerian LNG Limited saw it over two decades ago when work started on Africa’s largest LNG plant. They all liked the place and the promise there. The Federal Government, which has interest in all of these ventures, too knows what the country stands to gain from Bonny Island, which hosts the country’s only port of origin.

Of these companies in Bonny, NLNG seems dearest to the indigenes. It is their pride. Through it, they enjoy uninterrupted power supply, among other dividends. For Nigeria, it is both our pride and cash-cow.

You will understand better what NLNG means to Nigeria if you listened to Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Group Managing Director (GMD) Dr. Maikanti Baru  some months back on an NTA programme.

To Baru, the Bonny NLNG is one of the biggest success stories of the oil and gas industry. This company, Baru said, has generated $90 billion revenue, $30 billion dividends and contributed four per cent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The model, which made NLNG a success, is, however, under threat from the National Assembly. Baru believes this move against the NLNG Act has dampened the optimism of investors in the industry.

“The review of the NLNG Act by the National Assembly is causing a challenge for the Federal Government and the IOCs and it is sending wrong signals to the international community about how business is done in the country,” he said.

The NLNG has been a darling and should be allowed to remain so. Let me cite this particular example: When President Muhammadu Buhari came in, the Federal Government initiated a bailout package for states owing their workers. The bulk of the money which made up the N400 billion package came from proceeds from the Bonny Island, Finima, Rivers State-based company.

This darling, which was incorporated some 30 years ago but its first cargo of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) did not leave the Bonny Port until ten years later, rose so fast that it became the fourth largest supplier of LNG. The company has also paid over $5.5billion as Companies Income Tax, Tertiary Education Tax, WHT, VAT and PAYE. Regulators’ levies and other fees have led to the company coughing out over N51billion.

The NLNG owns some 30 ships. It used to be 24 until six additional ships were delivered by Samsung and Hyundai dockyards. Through its second subsidiary, the NLNG Ship Manning Limited (NSML), the NLNG is the biggest employer of Nigerian seafarers on board its 13 LNG carrier ships. Also, the company has a wholly-owned subsidiary set up in 1989, Bonny Gas Transport (BGT) Limited, which provides shipping services for NLNG. The BGT was set up in Bermuda with an ordinary equity holding from NLNG Limited and preferential equity holding from the sponsors, NLNGs shareholders. Another wholly owned subsidiary of NLNG Limited is the NSML, which was set up in 2008 to provide, develop and manage high-calibre personnel for NLNGs maritime business.

Former Coordinating Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala visited the NLNG Plant on Bonny Island, Rivers State on November 15, 2013. She described the NLNG as an asset to Nigeria, a shining example of a successful company and a beacon of hope for a better Nigeria. She described the NLNG as the most successful Nigerian company with 49 per cent government ownership.

Shell Gas BV (SGBV) controls 25.6 per cent. Total LNG Nigeria Limited owns 15 per cent and Eni International controls 10.4 per cent.

The failure to take the final investment decision on its Train Seven has made it lose its pre-eminence in the global LNG market. There are imminent fears it will still dip further if its expansion plans are not concretised soon. And now the House of Representatives has thrown spanner in the works.

As at the time it celebrated the export of its 3000th cargo on January 6, 2015, a large expanse of land, close to its Train Six in Finima, Bonny Island, was waiting for further action to house the Seventh Train of the plant. As a result of this, the NLNG, once the fastest growing facility in the world, has lost grounds to Qatar and Australia. Qatar has moved its output from 20 million metric tonnes to 80 million metric tonnes. Australia, from its previous 20 metric tonnes, now churns out 81 metric tonnes annually. NLNG is stuck at 22 million metric tonnes. Australia has 10 LNG projects, with 20 trains and $215 billion worth of final investment decision. Yet, Australia has only 60 percent of Nigeria’s gas reserves. Nigeria has gas reserves estimated at over 160 trillion cubic feet. The United States (U.S.), formerly a major LNG export destination, is now a net LNG exporter.

The seventh train of the NLNG plant will bring in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) estimated at over $8 billion, help reduce flared gas and improve the country’s revenue profile. With Train 7, the NLNG, said industry watchers, would provide about 10,000 jobs. Since it opened shop in Bonny, NLNG Limited has provided over 2,000 jobs each construction year and 18,000 jobs at the peak of construction. The government, they said, will also reap an additional $2.2 billion annually in dividend.

What really does the National Assembly have against the NLNG Act? The National Assembly is trying to end the company’s status as dollar denominated, which was agreed on to protect the company against Naira’s flip-flop. The National Assembly also seeks to make its subsidiary, Bonny Gas Transport Company, pay tax in Nigeria. It also plans to make NLNG pay three per cent of its annual revenue to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), pay three per cent of gross freight on international inbound and outbound cargo to NIMASA, pay two per cent of contracts performed by companies engaged in cabotage and pay one per cent of any contract award upstream to the government.

This Act under threat is a contract between the Federal Government and the NLNG shareholders. The thrusts of this contract include incentives, concessions, guarantees and assurances, which were reaffirmed in Letters of Assurance to lenders for the Nigeria LNG Trains 4 and 5 expansions by the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Justice and the Central Bank.

The incentives, concessions, guarantees and assurances are not uncommon in the global LNG industry. They are used in countries, such as Qatar, Oman, Malaysia, Angola and others to support and grow their LNG plants. The guarantees are to assure foreign investors that their investments will be protected.

What those asking NLNG to pay the NDDC Levy seems to have forgotten is that the levy is aimed at upstream oil and gas producers. NLNG does not produce gas. It buys gas from producers and liquefies it. If it pays the levy, it amounts to the government taking money twice for the same purpose; one from the producer and two, from the client. The NDDC pursued the matter up to the Supreme Court and it lost.

These alterations planned by the National Assembly are against the guarantees and assurances Nigeria entered into with the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and others. The National Assembly needs to forget its feeling that the NLNG is enjoying a rare privilege. Firms in free trade zones enjoy almost absolute exemptions from taxes and levies. NLNG enjoys partial exemptions. Since 2010, it started paying Companies Income Tax, because its exemption from this expired in 2009.

The sponsors of the amendment believe the NLNG has cheated the people of the Niger Delta by not contributing to the purse of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). As far as they are concerned, the reasons of the NLNG on why the amendment should not sail through are balderdash. The House of Representatives by its action on Tuesday has sanctioned this belief. Will the Senate follow? The signs indicate so.

My final take: President Muhammadu Buhari should not sanction the amendment. Anything that has the potential of weakening the NLNG should be avoided. The company is our shining light and is run on international best practices, to the best of my knowledge. This is acknowledged globally, a situation which makes the Bonny-based firm to have a better international credit rating than our dear country.

  • Beautify your neck with choker

    Beautify your neck with choker

Apart from bead necklaces, choker necklaces are the reigning neck accessories. They not only reveal how current a lady is but say a lot about your dress sense.

The choker is the king of necklaces at the moment. If you want to know how passionate a lady is about her dress sense, check the accessories she wears to complement her clothes.

One accessory that can make a lady a dress sense to be complemented when rightly combined is the choker. The choker is one item that most elegant women always use to enhance their beauty.

A choker could either be in leather, gold, silver, bronze or coral bead form, but which ever one a lady chooses, a beautiful choker is bound to add to her beauty. One good thing about chokers is that they always fit very firmly around the neck and do not drop down. They are best used at parties and special occasions. Make it part of your jewellery collection and for your next engagement, complement your good look with one.

Chokers always fit very loosely around the neck and they are best used for special occasions; during weddings, naming ceremonies, birthdays and other social events. They are so unique that they might look out of place during ordinary moments.

  • Improper use of cellphones breaking neck

Improper use of cellphones breaking neck

There has been debate over whether or not the radiation emitted from base transmission stations (BTS) of mobile network operators (MNOs) cause health hazards to human beings. Though the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other experts have said there has not been any conclusive report to confirm it, a new study suggests that the angle at which a mobile phone user holds his head when making calls can affect the cervical spine and result in a condition known as ‘text neck’, LUCAS AJANAKU reports.

As it has turned out, technology is a double-edged sword. At one breath, it is solving human problems, simplifying hitherto rather complex situations. At yet another, it is creating challenges. That is today’s digital age. It comes with many benefits and different ways of working, but also brings a new set of health issues. The cellphone technology is one of such innovations that have come with its own challenges. One such challenge is text neck.

According to a new study released to the National Library of Medicine in the United States (U.S.), improper positioning of the head while making use of cellphone, tablet and other mobile devices could have a devastating effect on human health.

The study, written by Dr. Kenneth Hansraj, chief of spine surgery at New York Spine Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine, in Poughkeepsie, U.S., cautioned cellphone users to be careful about head positioning to avoid text neck.

The relatively new condition, which the report calls an epidemic, is commonly caused when too much pressure is placed on the spine due to bad posture, especially those positions in which most phone users find themselves when we cell phones and tablets are used.

According to News24, a Johannesburg, South African physiotherapist who has seen the condition far too many times at his Sandton practice, Jonathan Blake, said: “Text neck is the result of the axial skeleton and associated structures (muscle, ligaments, nerves, fascia and others) being exposed to extended period of abnormal and undue mechanical and positional stress caused by electronic devices used in ergonomically compromising positions. Personally I feel that the global term ‘text neck’ is too categorical – it implies that the postural problems caused by poor ergonomics are related to texting only.

“A more encompassing term is clearly needed so that these postural problems can be related to all forms of electronic communication – from screens, to keyboards, to notebooks, laptops and tablets and others.”

Blake says frequent text neck positions cause changes to the cervical spine, supporting ligaments, tendons, and musculature, and bony segments, commonly causing postural change.

It has also been linked to headaches and neurological issues, depression and heart disease.

What’s worse is that if left untreated, the condition could result in permanent damage, including flattening of the spinal curve, onset of early arthritis, spinal degeneration, loss of lung volume capacity and even gastrointestinal problems.

    How text neck is developed

Hansraj said the human head weighs about a dozen pounds. But as the neck bends forward and down, the weight on the cervical spine begins to increase. At a 15-degree angle, this weight is about 27 pounds, at 30 degrees it’s 40 pounds, at 45 degrees it’s 49 pounds, and at 60 degrees it’s 60 pounds.

That’s the burden that comes with staring at a smartphone, the way millions do for hours every day. Over time, researchers say, this poor posture, sometimes called “text neck,” can lead to early wear-and-tear on the spine, degeneration and even surgery.

According to Nigeria’s telecoms sector regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), there are 145.4 million active mobile telephone lines in the country with teledensity standing at 103.9 per cent. Though there is no demographic information about the percentage of the over 170 million population, analysts say no fewer than 80 per cent of the population has at least, one cell phone. Most subscribers in the country use more than one mobile phone because of the challenges of service quality bedeviling the MNOs.

With the rise of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google Plus+, Tumblr, Instagram, VK, Flickr, Vine, Meetup and others and huge youthful population, today’s phone user spends between three and five hours a day reading mails, sending texts and checking social media sites on their mobile devices.

Similarly, people watch videos while yet a set of others take advantage of the booming e-commerce landscape to place online orders for goods and cars has increased the length of time spent by cellphone users in the country.

“It is an epidemic or, at least, it’s very common. Just look around you, everyone has their heads down.

“Can’t grasp the significance of 60 pounds? Imagine carrying an eight-year-old around your neck several hours per day. Smartphone users spend an average of two to four hours per day hunched over, reading e-mails, sending texts or checking social media sites. The problem is really profound in young people. With this excessive stress in the neck, we might start seeing young people needing spine care. I would really like to see parents showing more guidance,” Hansraj told The Washington Post.

President,  American Physical Therapy Association‘s Private Practice Section, Tom DiAngelis, told CNN last year the effect is similar to bending a finger all the way back and holding it there for about an hour.

“As you stretch the tissue for a long period of time, it gets sore, it gets inflamed,” he said, adding that it can also cause muscle strain, pinched nerves, herniated disks and, over time, it can even remove the neck’s natural curve.

    Tips To Alleviate/Avoid Text Neck

Correct posture, regular breaks and a proper adjustment of equipment can help prevent disorders related to posture such as text neck, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, back and neck pain or vision care when using smartphones.

Be aware of your posture (there are wearable posture-tracking gadgets (such as LumoLift) to help workers identify when they are slouching).

Limit the time spent in compromising positions, take a break and escape lengthy periods of being deskbound.

Instead of bending your neck, try looking down at your device with only your eyes.

Simple exercises such as standing in a doorway with your arms extended and pushing your chest forward to strengthen “the muscles of good posture” help alleviate pain.

Find an office chair that is built to support your back while sitting at your desk.

A Cape Town, South Africa based ergonomics expert, Angela Hendricks said the key to preventing any musculoskeletal problems is mobility. “Extended periods in any awkward posture can result in neck pain but if you are regularly changing your position and giving your body a break, it gives the muscles time to recover.” she said.

Cellphone users could also book an appointment with a bio-kineticist who will teach them specific exercises that will strengthen the neck muscles thereby helping to strengthen the neck and protect the vertebrae against degeneration from continuously looking down at mobile devices.

Scared of using your cellphones? Don’t be. Hansraj said: “I love technology. I’m not bashing technology in any way. My message is: Just be cognisant of where your head is in space. Continue to enjoy your smartphones and continue to enjoy this technology — just make sure your head is up.”

  • Heartburn, Spondylosis, neck and back pain

As the bells which remind us of Love, Purity of Justice rang in sequence on May 31, following a prayer for Victorious work in the world, loving, prayerful wishes welled in me for some people. It was the third and final day of the observance of Pentecost, that yearly event, for planet Earth, known spiritually as Ephesus, during which the Holy Spirit, as reported last Thursday, send Power into Creation for its maintenance. One of the people I remembered in prayer, apart from myself, was a woman I met in Lagos about 38 years ago. We lost touch, as they say, about 20 years ago. Someone introduced her to this column from where she obtained my telephone number. Soon after, she called to request a meeting. I obliged. And she came over. I was shocked at the spectable I beheld.

About three-quartres of her mass had been eaten up by disease and malnutrition. She was suffering from cancer of the throat, the same condition a gentleman in the Administration of former Lagos Governor Babatunde Fashola suffered from but survived. He was a chain smoker, and learned, again as we say, by ‘’force and fire’’ to quit the habit. This woman was a caterer. Her problem began with what many people believe is a simple health challenge. .. heart burn. When I touched her throat, it was wood hard. She couldn’t eat anything. Even a spoonful of water would ‘’hang’’ in the upper part of the throat and, then, trickle down in drops as though the throat had become an hospital drip set or line. But, surprisingly, she could almost freely drink a glass of water at 3 a.m or 3 p.m. so, I promised to keep the vigil with her. In such a glass of water, she could dissolve her medicines or whatever food she had liquefied. But such feeding didn’t help much, and she lost weight dramatically. I had given her a product called THROAT EZ, which her doctors agreed she could use, and another named MARIA TREBEN SWEEDISH BITTERS, a great recipe given to Maria Treben,  that great Austrian herbalist, by a gentleman who die at the age of 104 after falling off a horse he was riding. From the clinical reports of Maria Treben, on cancer cases she successfully treated, there should be need, also, for herbs she could impact externally on the throat as poultices.

n her epic book, HELP THROUGH GOD’S PHARMACY, Maria Treben offers suggestions which may be found useful for mouth and throat disorders. She says, for example: “Sage tea is used for ulcerated throat and mouth inflammation of the tooth pulp, tonsilities, and throat disorders. Many children and grown-ups could have saved themselves a tonsillectomy had  they taken sage tea in time. When the tonsils, which are the policemen of the body for toxic substances are missing, the toxic substances go directly to the kidneys. A decoction of sage is useful gargle for loose and bleeding teeth or ulcerated or receeding gums. A small piece of cotton saturated with sage tea can be applied.

In a section of the book which addresses DISEASES OF THE LARYNX, Maria Treben says: “Mallow loses one third of its medicinal properties during the drying process, therefore it is essential to  use only fresh plants. One heaped teaspoon per cup is used and two and half litres of tea are needed daily. The herbs are steeped in cold water overnight, warmed slightly the next morning and strained. The tea is kept warm in a thermos flask which has been rinsed with hot water, or the required amount is re-warmed in a water bath. Four cups of this tea are taken in sips and six cups are used in rinsing and gaggling. These 10 cups bring about the abatement of the malignant disease of the larynx very soon, even when the disease is advanced. The residue from the daily tea preparation is left in the pot, in the evening re-warmed with little water, mixed with barley flour (available from health food stores) and warmed again. This poultice is spread on a piece of linen and applied to the larynx. A warm cloth is wrapped around. After the first application, the person will feel a mark relief and often, four to five days later, he regains his voice. This same treatment is used for disorders of the oesophagus(also esophagus). Besides the warm barley meal poultices, warm hot Horsetail poultices are applied overnight…. Results of the latest research, according to the Austrian biologist Richard Wilfort justifies the assumption that tumours are inhibited in their growth and finally eliminated through the use of horsetail tea for long periods. This is also useful for polyps in the abdomen or anus. For greater benefit in both cases, horsetail steam poultices and sitz baths are used. These poultices are also useful for stomach pains, liver and gall bladder attacks, bursitis and for painful congestions which press upon the heart.

“On December 19, 1977, I received a call from a 49-year old farmer, who had a very painful hard growth in the sole of his foot and was, therefore, unable to step on it. He spent a few days in hospital but was sent home again. I recommended horsetail poultices which can even eliminate malignant tumours. I was quite surprised when on December 22, he called again telling me the growth had disappeared. The skin still felt soft and flabby but the hard growth was gone. A new miracle from God’s pharmacy!”

I hope the woman in reference has the money for this therapy. She has been dependent on the generosity of a few friends since she lives alone with her children. When she telephoned me last week, to ask when a carton of LASENA alkaline water, I promised her would be delivered by the supplier Mr Shoboyede, she told me she had gained about two kilogrammes in weight. The miracle was achieved through a hole which doctors at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) bore into her stomach. They passed a feeding tube into this hole. Through the tube, she feeds on liquid food. Such food includes fruit juices and juiced banana. Her stomach and intestine still work. Someday, if the throat cancer does not disappear, the doctors plan to remove the cancerous throat and replace it with another throat formed from a part of her intestine. This scares her as it makes me shiver about the kind of life that may follow this. She is ready to do anything possible to make her escape from this ordeal. Meanwhile, the feeding tube she uses is not the right kind and, besides, the improvisation is not the right size. A proper feeding tube costs about N70,000, as she is told, but even then it is not readily available in Nigeria. So, a catheter was improvised. The catheter is the tube passed through the penis to bring urine from the bladder of men who cannot urinate on their own, into a urine bag they wear on their persons. Women, too, use it in special circumstances. Being undersized, the improvised catheter pull out of the stomach on its own from time to time, and she has to clean and fit, raising the risk of infection, bleeding and pain. This is a case worthy of the attention of Nigeria philanthropists.

    Heartburn

As this case arose from heartburn, I wish to briefly, address it. Many people complain of heartburn as they do gastritis without paying serious attention to it. In heartburn, there is too much acid in the stomach which the intestine will not accept. The throat connects the mouth to the stomach. At the connection with the stomach, a spincker muscles stands as a gatekeeper. At the point where the stomach is connected to the beginning of the small intestine, the duodenum, another spincter muscle stands as gatekeeper. That is why if you stand on your head after a meal, the food you have just eaten is unlikely to come out through your mouth, if the gatekeeper is strong and healthy and does its work well. That is, also, why, as the stomach is mixing (churning) and digesting food, the food does not readily escape undigested into the intestine. The stomach is made to stand some acid, but not very harsh acid. The intestine cannot stand acid. It prefers alkalinity. Doctors used to think the vagus nerve made the stomach produce excess acid in some situations and, so, surgically tempered with it in conditions of gastritis or peptic ulcer. But new light has emerged from the works of researchers such as Dr. Robert Young who have shown the stomach has no acid pumps which produce acid. In their view, it is the food we eat which may cause the stomach to become overly acidic. A standard Nigerian breakfast of, say, bread, milk, sugar, tea, margarine, fried or boiled egg, is nothing but acidic food. Red meat, fried foods, organ meats and many brands of sachet and bottle water are acidic. So are carbohydrate foods. Hardly are vegetable eaten generously. Even then, they come to the kitchen, fertiliser grown and wilted, are overcooked and the addition of monosodium glutamate (MSG) to enhance taste worsens the diet.

hereas not more than half of the stomach should be filled during a meal, some people exert their stomachs to the elastic capacity by overeating. As the lower gatekeeper would not let acidic food pass into the intestine, the acidic meal is kept longer than necessary in the stomach. For many people, water is not taken about 30 minutes before a meal to guarantee extra supply to the pancreas for the manufacture of pancreatic juice, which is alkaline and neutralises acidic content of the stomach when it is set to leave the stomach. Irritated by the acid, the stomach tries to expel it through the throat to the mouth. But the throat gatekeeper, too, would not budge. The acidic food thus begins to burn the lower end of the throat in what we call heart burn or acid reflux. The acid actually cooks the lower throat tissue. And, so, over time, the spinter muscle may present as “boiled or cooked” meat rather than fresh meat. When the gatekeeper becomes run down, the gate flings open and acid engulps the throat, damaging its tissue. Other effects including cancer may develop.

Happily there are many natural products in the Nigerian market today for tackling heartburn. The cheapest among them is alkaline water. My first choice is LASENA water. There are other brands made from coral calcium. Once the pain is felt, one should drink two glasses of water, according to Dr. Batmanghelidj. We are about 70 percent water. When we speak, walk, run, jump, or urinate or defecate, we lose water.  When water is not adequately replaced, rationing among organs may arise. If the pancreas is thereby dehydrated, alkaline digestive substances cannot be adequately produced. These findings lead Dr. Batmanghelidj prescribe two glasses on rising from sleep in the morning, two glasses about 30 minutes before a meal, two glasses about two hours after a meal and two glasses before retiring to bed at night.

Horsetail, because of the high silica content, helps alkalise acidic stomach. So does DIATOM, with a higher silica content. Coral calcium, magnesium, potassium (potato juice) beet root juice etc, do the job also. I obtain good result from the proprietary product bells Acidic Stomach and alkaline balance. Among the 12 biochemic cell or tissue salts, No 10 does the job. The list is so long to mention here.

    Spondylosis

As the bells rang, memories of other people filled my heart. Some of such people are hooked on drugs and need help. To reach them with help, I longed to re-read Horse Wetzel’s and Daniel Swarovski’sTRIP INTO ILLUSION which I first read in the 1980s. It would appear the book is out of circulation because used copies cost about N 20,000 in Europe. Happily, I’ve got a clean copy from Mr Emmanuel Dike who treasures a well-kept library. I will speak more about this in future. In the interim, it would appear Nigeria isn’t doing enough about the hard drugs problem eating it up. Hard drugs joints exist in almost every town some are close to police stations or right on major roads. When petrol tanker vehicles run into crowds, dwellings or shops or fall from overhead bridges, killing, maiming and damaging property, is it all a question of plain accident (there is no accident in creation) or the effects of drug use? Hasn’t the time arrived to routinely check the blood of motorists for evidence of drug taking? Is the alcohol breath test enough in our circumstances?

s the bell rang and my mind wandered to the woman with a throat challenge, I remembered also some people with back or spinal column challenges. One of such people was a former manager of the defunct federal savings bank. An otherwise buoyant man, he suffers from a 30 degrees or so curvature sideways and walks with difficulty even with the aid of a walking stick for balance. His doctors say it is pointless operating on his back to remove the problem. The wife of one of my cousins thought her back problem came from a “spiritual attack”. She frequented many churches for “deliverance” and finally ended up at LUTH where a surgery was performed. Today, she stoops at an obvious angle and walks with a walking stick. There is the father of one of my younger acquaintances whose hip bone cracked while he was bathing. Doctors inserted a piece of iron into his pelvic bone to enable him make limited movements. There are many people in this condition. Their problems most probably began with back pain which may have been under rated and suppressed with pain killers, forgetting that something is going wrong which must be addressed. All too often, what is going on is a degeneration of the bones and discs of the spinal column. But that is not saying all back pain come from the scenario. For other causes may include constipation, bad posture which causes muscle, nerve ligament and tendon tension, obesity, high-heel shoes, nutritional deficiencies, osteoporosis (loss of calcium in the bone structure), spinal misalignment etc. The case I wish to address is degeneration of the bones of the back, which may not present symptoms until the havoc is wrath, and about which many people have no clue.

From the neck to the hip bone, the bones of the spine (spinal vertebrae) are arranged one on top of the other with a load bearing disc or shock absorber placed between two vertebrae to protect them against shock. The middle or center of each vertebra has a hole through which the spinal cord travels downwards from the brain. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves in a casing through which the brain governs the whole body. At the basement of each vertebra, there are two small canals on each side through which branch nerves from the spinal cord exit to particular parts of the body, further branching on the way. For example, branch nerves serve the eyes as they serve the liver or the prostate gland. Like the joint of the arm or knee, these vertebrae are maintained by many nutritional supplements, including calcium, magnesium, glucosamine etc.  They are also subject to free radical damage like any other part of the body and protected by antioxidants.

Spondylosis is degenerative osteoarthritis of the joint in the vertebrae. In the dangerous situations especially in condition of magnesium deficiency or misbehavior of the parathyroid gland (it controls calcium metabolism), calcium is not well absorbed, is extracted or deposited in wrong places. I painted a picture for an 85- year old man who can no longer move his leg. His doctors read a scan image which shows that calcium has infiltrated the exterior of the vertebrae, causing bone spurs which have lain over the branch nerves. Since the malaise occurred in the nerves which control the muscles of his legs, he naturally lost mobility in those legs. The picture is that of a burning candle. The hot wax forms wax spurs on the sides. Similarly, wrong deposition of calcium may form bone spurs in the spinal column. Pressure on the nerve route causes inflammation, tenderness and pain. The muscle becomes weak.

Many people are familiar with cervical spondylosis, that is degeneration of vertebrae in the neck. It causes neck pain and neck immobility which may be helped by the neck collar. I wore a neck collar for months in the 1980s. Pressure in the neck may affect vision. There is a hazard in jobs which require long spells of reading and writing on flat desks which means the head has to be tilted forward for long hours, overworking a set of muscles and weakening them. Should a misalignment occur in the balancing act of these pressed muscles and the opposite counterbalancing pairs, the vertebrae may shift from their own aligned state, and the shift may make them pinch the nerve jotting out of the nerve root. This may cause excruciating pain and deterioration of organs served by these pinched nerves.

  • Neck that speaks

    Neck that speaks

THE necklace is an accessory that cannot go out of vogue. Either classic or apparently simple, it just speaks right of the clothing. Anyway, you don’t just wear neckpiece for the fun of it, else, you tend to ignore the value and effect it creates on you.

Neckpieces are now in different designs ranging from pearls to bead accessories, ankara accessories, chokers and all sorts.

Trying any of these is not a bad idea; or, even buying more of them especially if they are of different colours, shapes and designs. They will go a long way in beautifying your wardrobe or jewelry box.
