  • Police arrest woman for neighbour’s death

The police in Lagos have arrested a woman, Ndifreke Femi, 30, for allegedly stabbing her neighbour to death.

Although the incident occurred at Block 109, Ikota Housing Estate in Ajah, the suspect is being held at the Homicide Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) at Panti-Yaba.

The Nation learnt that the police have launched a manhunt for the suspect’s husband who allegedly fled from home after the incident.

It was gathered that the mother of two stabbed Ayomide Ayenuwa, 28, on the neck with a kitchen knife when he attempted to settle a rift between her and her husband.

According to neighbours, the deceased had gone into the Femi’s home to pay his electricity bill but met the couple quarrelling over a missing N20,000. The woman claimed that her husband stole the cash.

The late Ayenuwa said to have attempted to broker peace between them, but to no avail and as he was leaving their apartment, the woman rushed to her kitchen, picked a kitchen knife and allegedly stabbed him on the neck.

It was learnt that other neighbours rushed him to Peninsula Hospital but he was referred to the Akodo General Hospital. He died on the way to the general hospital.

A neighbour, James Peter, while narrating the incident said: “When he got to their room, he saw the husband and wife quarrelling. Ndifreke was accusing her husband of stealing the N20,000 she hid under their mattress. Her husband denied the allegation but she was ready for a fight.

“It was at this point that Ayenuwa made efforts to settle the couple but they kept fighting. Ayenuwa appealed to Ndifreke to take the matter easy but she descended on him and started calling him names. She told him to mind his business.

“That was how Ayenuwa left the couple to their trouble. As he was walking away, Ndifreke ran into the kitchen and brought out a kitchen knife which she used to stab Ayenuwa on his neck from behind. Neighbours made efforts to save Ayenuwa’s life while others held Ndifreke down and almost lynched her.

“The neighbours with Ayenuwa’s family rushed him to the Peninsula Hospital at Ajah for treatment but he was referred to the Akodo General Hospital. Sadly, he died on his way to the hospital.”

But in her statement to the police, the suspect claimed she acted in self defence.

She alleged that the deceased attacked her first by punching her on the head.

  • ‘How our neighbour defiled my two-year-old daughter’

AN High Court in Lagos yesterday heard how Kehinde Layode, 38, defiled a two-year-old girl.

The incident happened on January 12, 2013, at Bakare Street on Igando Lagos.

Led in evidence by the prosecutor, Akin George, the victim’s mother, Mrs Mercy Ofaghae narrated how the incident happened.   Mrs Ofaghae said the defendant was a close neighbour, adding:

“The incident happened on January 12, three weeks after my husband travelled out of the country. That fateful night, my daughter was running temperature seriously as a result of teething problem. So I called my neighbour and friend, Mrs Layode, the wife of the accused, who brought paracetamol for the girl and advised me to bath her.

“But the drug didn’t suppress her temperature, then I told her I have to rush out to buy Pican (drug) for my daughter and I dropped my daughter with my neighbour’s husband, the accused, because the wife was on her way to the salon and we both left the house.

“When I got back home with the drug, I knocked Mr Layode’s door and he claimed to be in the bathroom and it took him one hour before he opened the door and when he eventually did, I rushed in and took my daughter to our apartment and I took off her clothes to bath her before administering the drug.

“But when I got to her pant, there was sperm on it and I screamed and neighbours rushed into my apartment to see what was the matter”.

Mrs Ofaghae said the defendant was among those who came in and he asked her if she was accusing her of raping her daughter.

She said the question infuriated another neighbour who slapped the defendant because she claimed he has actually exposed himself.

She said her daughter was rushed to the hospital where the doctor confirmed that the girl has been defiled after being tested.                                                                                 “I was so shocked when I realised what Kehinde did to my daughter. Though his family members pleaded that I should help them cover the matter up but it seems my daughter was not the first victim because the defendant’s brother confirmed this”, she said.

Earlier, George preferred a one- count charge against the defendant before Justice Ipaye.

He told the court that  the offence contravenes Section 258 of the Criminal Act Law of Lagos State (2011).

The accused pleaded not guilty,                                                                                                                                                   Justice Ipaye ordered the defendant remanded in prison and adjourned the matter till August 19.

After the court rose, Mrs Ofaghae told reporters: “When the matter was first taken to the family court, the accused was granted bail in the sum of N250,000 and he was walking about freely, but today the judge has ordered that he should be remanded.

“I’m so happy today and I’ll have a sound sleep. I’ll even share testimony in church on Sunday”.

  • My annoying neighbour is trying to steal my guy from me

Good day ma, I’m a girl of 16 and in love with a guy of 19. Both of us are through with secondary school and plan to go further. The problem is that I have an annoying neighbour who tries to steal my guy from me by acting over-friendly even though she’s dating someone else. Some guys have fallen for her but this guy hasn’t and she’s trying hard. The main problem is that he’s trying to avoid her just to be committed to me. Aunty Ade I really love this guy but I’m scared of losing my virginity to him at a tender age because I was almost a victim of molestation and rape due to the fact that I don’t have a good relationship with my mother (she never sits me down to talk to me) I have made some mistakes and I can’t avoid guys because I’m beautiful and well behaved. Pleases help me before I make a great mistake.

I want to believe that all concerned in this situation are teenagers. From experience in dealing with people, I know that teenage love does not always last, so there’s no gain fighting over a guy. This guy is yet to find his bearing and so, he’s only just occupying his time with you girls till he gains admission into a higher school of learning.

If you constantly worry about how to get this girl committed and glued to you, then you may focus of the most important thing to you now – your education. As you grow older and begin to explore the world, you will find out that there is someone out there who is better than this current champion. The boy may be confused as most guys his age about how to handle these two girls showing him attention. And I can bet that he’s enjoying the flirtations of the other girl. It’s just natural with boys to find it amusing that girls are finding them attractive. Give him a break by leaving him to have the freedom to mingle. You’re acting like a mother hen to her chicks by watching him around this other girl. At 16, you really have a nerve! Sometimes, it doesn’t matter how much you love someone. He may not feel the same way about you. Honestly, I think that you’re putting too much pressure on yourself because of this boy. Most importantly, if you’re not ready to have sex, let him know. If you’re uncomfortable about something a guy wants you to do, speak up. Muster up the courage to utter a single word: NO. Having sex with him doesn’t prove your love. Don’t believe the lies he tells you. Please don’t ever let anyone pressure you into doing anything you don’t want to do. And if he forces sex on you, it’s called rape; report it. Remember that no means no.
