…over 13,700 incidents managed in Lagos since 2008

To strengthen the capacity of first responders during emergencies nationwide, the Lagos State Government has partnered with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to host the maiden State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMA) conference.

Scheduled for October 2 to 5 in Ikeja, the conference will convene Chief Executives of SEMAs from across the country alongside key stakeholders in emergency and safety management to develop strategies for disaster prevention and risk reduction.

Announcing the event, themed “Strengthening Sub-national Emergency Management for a Resilient Nigeria”, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said it would feature high-level dialogues and simulations on coordinated multi-agency response to complex disaster scenarios.

He said the aim was to underscore Nigeria’s capacity for resilience, adding that the simulations would hold at the LASEMA Relief Camp in Igando.

On the choice of Lagos for the maiden conference, Oke-Osanyintolu said the state has showed leadership in sub-national emergency management, having managed over 13,700 incidents between 2008 and 2025.

“These include fires, road accidents, structural collapses, hazardous material incidents, medical emergencies, and large-scale disasters.

    “Recent data illustrate this impact:

Over 1,450 emergencies were managed in just the first eight months of 2025. More than 3,000 casualties were attended to in 2023 alone, reflecting expanded capabilities.

“Over 4,600 road and motor accidents and 2,400 fire outbreaks have been responded to since 2008.

“Targeted interventions for children since 2023 have improved survival outcomes.

“These achievements highlight the effectiveness of Lagos’ collaboration with NEMA, its use of technology and training, and its emphasis on community resilience,” he stated.

Commending Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the robust support to LASEMA and for hosting the conference, Oke-Osanyintolu urged residents not to panic when they observe movements of emergency equipments or hear certain sounds during the days mentioned above as simulations would be on.

He also dismissed concerns that there were lapses in communicating emergency situations and updates in Lagos compared to the past, noting that LASEMA was only ensuring it releases empirical information to the public.

At the briefing was NEMA’s Assistant Head of Operations, Lagos Office, Mrs. Ibitayo Adenine, who represented the Director General (DG) Mrs Zubaida Umar.
