2027: Group praises Yilwatda’s  support for governor

A group, Plateau Vanguard for Democracy (PVD), has hailed the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, for what it described as his humility, maturity and sense of purpose in rallying both new and old members of the party toward building a united Plateau.

In a statement issued by its National Chairman, Christopher Ishaku, the group said Prof. Yilwatda’s leadership style reflects a deep commitment to reconciliation and inclusive politics at a time when the state needs collective resolve.

PVD particularly lauded Yilwatda’s public declaration that he would personally lead the second-term campaign drive of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, describing the move as a strong signal of unity and stability within the party.

According to the statement, “Professor Nentawe Yilwatda has demonstrated uncommon humility and statesmanship. His decision to rally all tendencies within the APC and to spearhead the second-term campaign of Governor Caleb Mutfwang shows that Plateau’s interest is greater than personal ambition.”

The group noted that the Plateau has endured painful years of division, insecurity, criminality and terrorist attacks that disrupted communities and undermined development. It stressed that the only pathway to lasting peace and prosperity lies in unity of purpose among political actors and citizens alike.

PVD therefore called on supporters of Governor Mutfwang to be gracious and accommodating in embracing the interests and leadership role of the APC National Chairman, emphasizing that harmony between the governor and the national leadership of the party is critical to sustaining progress.

“We urge all supporters of the governor to rise above narrow sentiments and work collaboratively with the national chairman. This is not the time for internal rivalry but for collective action,” the statement added.

The group maintained that a united Plateau under a cohesive APC would be better positioned to defeat the forces of criminality and terrorism that had rampaged parts of the state in recent years.

PVD concluded by urging all stakeholders—political leaders, youth groups, women, traditional institutions and civil society—to close ranks and work together for peace, development and a secure future for Plateau State.

Why opposition can’t displace APC, by Yilwatda

The national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has said that the ruling party would continue to wax stronger because of its formidable structure, dynamic leadership, loyal followership and effective crisis resolution mechanism.

He said opposion parties, individually or collectively, lack these essential ingredients of party growth, cohesion and stability.

Yilwatda, who spoke with reporters in Lagos, paid tribute by the founding fathers of the APC, particularly the national leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his pioneering stabilising roles, noting that the opposition is not blessed with that type of rallying point.

Reminiscening on the role the president played in the life of APC in 2014/15, he said:”President Tinubu was the rallying point for APC. He put in his money and connection at no interest. Everybody called him leader. You can’t find that in the coalition.

“Everybody in the coalition is looking for the ticket. This is the difference between APC and the opposition.”

Yilwatda added:”Asiwaju Tinubu has built the party and everybody see him as leader. We have that huge respect for the true and focussed leader, an intelligent leader.”

The chairman, who noted that Nigeria is stabilising under the Tinubu administration, urged the media to always rise in defense of popular rule.

In his view, the country can no longer fall victim of military dictatorship.

Yilwatda said APC knows the feeling of Nigerians and the Federal Government it midwifed is working assiduously to meet pubic expectation.

Defending the economic reforms of the administration, the professor of Computer Engineering said:”If fuel subsidy was not removed and forex was not floated, ways and means would have killed the country.”

He added: “Nigeria was on the verge of total economic collapse when President Tinubu came in. Now, $45 billion of foreign reserve has been attained. Nigeria is becoming productive, doing more of exports, meaning that we are improving.”

To Yilwatda, the APC governor is focussing on the poor, stressing that after verification, over six million people have benefitted from the conditional cash transfer.

He also explained that government now guarantees free treatment for tuberculosis anx snake bite.

Yilwatda, a university don, praised President Tinubu for the students loan scheme, which allows the children of the poor to have access to education.

He also commended the government for fighting the infrastructure battle through massive road construction across the country.

However, Yilwatda pointed out that the factors that drive poverty reside in the states and local governments. The land for agriculture belongs to the state and the water board belong to the states and local governments.

Yilwatda drew attention to the fact that Nigeria now receive more revenue because the revenue-generating agencies are generating more money.

He said government is building schools under the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the aviation sector has been repositioned for better performance.

Yilwatda said pragmatic steps are being taken to tackle insecurity, adding that President Tinubu has shelved all engagements outside the country to attend to home affairs.

On the ambassadorial list, the chairman said many factors were taken into consideration by the president.

He explained:”Countries do make peculiar requests, e.g Saudi Arabia and the Vatican. Other factors are about the person; their networks, connections, friendly relations.”

According to the party chairman, APC is not about winning election alone; it is about serving Nigerians.

He said the party is expanding its coast ahead of 2027. The chairman hinted that Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has finally indicated his interest in joining the APC, adding that he had discussed his defection with the President

Yilwatda stressed:”We want to have the data of all APC members that are verifiable. We are building a democratically cohesive party with less crisis.

Recently, there have been complaints about the disqualification of governorship aspirants in Ekiti and Osun states to pave the way for consensus candidates.

Yilwatda said the nomination guidelines were clear, adding that APC cannot break its own rule.

He also said that the party is supreme and discipline would not be compromised.

Yilwatda stressed: “You have the guidelines that nomination forms should be taken to the local government and that five financial members should sign the forms. Some aspirants did not bother to let financial members sign their forms.

“ In Ekiti, there was an aspirant who did not validate his membership of the party. In Osun, we have 90,000 members. We are updating the register.”

Yilwatda: Governors, council chairmen have enough resources to do more for people

National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Nentawe Yilwatda has challenged Nigerians to demand more from governors and Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen.

Yilwatda, a professor of Digital System Engineering, argued that with a triple-fold increase in monthly allocations to all tiers of government, governors and council chiefs were now in a better position to execute projects that should impact the lives of their people.

He stated that no governor or council chairman receives less than triple or four times what they used to get as monthly allocations before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The APC chairman spoke at the launch of   “Vicious Red Circle”, a book written by Amb. Alex   Oriaku, in Abuja yesterday.

Yilwatda said: “No governor in Nigeria. Who knows that two years ago, there was a share of about N400 billion per month. But today, the last share they did was N2.2 trillion. No governor in Nigeria today collects less than three times, up to four times what they used to collect. None.

“I would say, talk to your governors. Talk to your Local Government Chairmen. Let them do more.”

While giving indices that the current administration was getting economic policies right, the APC chairman said he dreamed that Nigeria would move forward under the ruling party.

He said: “I dream that I have a party that is driving Nigeria in the right direction. To give Nigeria not just optics alone, but a reality that Nigeria is better and open.

“We can turn around the corner. And as a political party, the APC, we like doing the unthinkable. We make changes that look unreasonable to the eye of people, but deep within, and seated in our hearts, are things that we can make changes that improve the lives of our people. That’s at the centre of our hearts. And that’s why we’re working as citizens with the economy, and everybody knows the numbers are changing.

“The World Bank and the IMF(International Monetary Fund), said we can’t grow up to 3 per cent GDP(Gross Domestic Product) per annum, but we are doing 4.23 per cent now.

‘’It was predicted that by now, we can’t do more than 1 million barrels(bpd) of crude oil per day. Now, we are doing 1.7 or  1.8 million bpd.

‘’I can keep giving the numbers. But these numbers must reflect on the people,” Yilwatda stated.

Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Binta Bello, commended the book’s author,   Oriaku,  for highlighting a critical national issue through storytelling.

Bello reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to combating human trafficking through prevention, protection of victims  and prosecution of offenders

Lagos APC: Tinubu’s reforms taking Nigeria higher

The  APC  in Lagos State said yesterday that   Tinubu’s fiscal revolution is rebuilding Nigeria brick and brick.

Its  Spokesman,   Seye Oladejo, in a statement, commended the leadership and reform-driven approach of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) under Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The party said: “In a period when nations are being tested by global economic disruptions, Nigeria stands resilient.

“This is not by chance but by deliberate financial engineering driven by sound policy, strategic management, and disciplined revenue administration.

“The ongoing transformation of the FIRS is a textbook example of how institutional reforms, when anchored on competence and integrity, can become the engine room of nation building.”

  • APC not part of early campaign, says chair

APC not part of early campaign, says chair

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is not involved in early electioneering campaign ahead of the 2027 general election, its National Chairman Prof Nentawe Yilwatda said yesterday.

Yilwatda’s defence followed claims by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Police last week that some political parties have jumped the gun by embarking on early campaigns ahead of the stipulated time.

The electoral umpire said such political activities violate the electoral law.

INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu complained that parties had already kicked-off subtle campaigns despite clear provisions that restricted such activities to 150 days before the polls.

But speaking on a national television yesterday, Yilwatda said the party has not commenced campaign, stressing that the APC was conscious of the conditions guiding the electioneering campaign and will not breach the law.

He, however, admitted that APC, unlike other political parties, has continued to engage in membership mobilisation, which he claimed is permissive in law.

When reminded that INEC accused major political parties of embarking on early campaign ahead of the next elections, Yilwatda said: “I don’t know of other parties, but for APC, we have not embarked on any campaign activities. We know that there are five or six conditions that guide campaign activities, and we are not engaged in any of them.

“What we are doing is membership mobilization, which is a regular and continuous activity of any political party. I am sure if we are running fowl of the law, INEC would have written to warn. To the best of my knowledge, we have not received any of such letters.

“APC is a law abiding party and we have not committed any electoral infraction.”

On the wave of defections across party lines, the chairman noted that APC has experienced what he called “minimal defections.”

He went on: “We have had very, very minimal defections in APC. Instead, people are trooping into APC every day, not only National Assembly members from other political parties. If you look at other political parties, the state assemblies, even governors are trooping into APC.

“It tells you that APC is still the most preferred political party. People are joining us across the six geopolitical zones, and that shows our acceptance and the popularity of the APC across the country.

“I can’t say that one or two persons from the APC will not want to move to the other side, but we have more people coming in. For every one person who wants to leave APC, we have a thousand from other political parties.”

The chairman also reaffirmed the endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the party’s sole candidate for the presidential elections in 2027, adding that in line with the electoral law, his candidacy will eventually be confirmed at the party’s primary election.

He noted that all organs of the party, its members in the six geopolitical zones and other critical stakeholders have endorsed the president for his second term bid.

“Governors, members of the National Assembly, critical stakeholders of the party – all of them – have endorsed him as the only single candidate,” Yilwatda said.

When asked if the ruling party will print more than one presidential nomination and expression of interest forms, Yilwatda said: “Printing of forms isn’t the issue. The issue is one person being accepted by the majority of members of the political party as their own preferred candidate.

“It isn’t about how many forms we are printing; the issue is there is only one office and one person is going to stand for it.”

He, however, said the party will not close its door from any other members to express their rights, insisting that everyone, including the President, will face delegates at Convention.

“Though some critical stakeholders and members have overwhelmingly endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the preferred candidate, you can pick the form, but the members will still vote for that preferred candidate.

“That’s the voice of the majority and you could see it at the summit held at the Villa: the governors, members of the National Assembly, critical stakeholders of the party, all of them endorsed him as their own single candidate.”

Yilwatda dismissed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) opposition platform and others as no threat to Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, saying that the last by-elections showed the weight of all existing parties.

He said: “You saw in the by-election. PDP won only one seat out of seventeen. APGA won one in Anambra, and NNPP won only in Kano, ADC won only one state assembly seat. But we won across all the geopolitical zones. You see, when we talk about opposition, who is the leader of the opposition?

“Every leader in ADC is looking for a ticket unlike in 2013 when APC was formed. There was this National Leader galvanizing our members, investing money, investing his time and intelligence.

“That person was President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Everybody rushing to ADC is looking for a ticket. They aren’t organized as an opposition.”

Dismissing fears of possible gang-up from Nigerians over economic policies of the APC-led administration of President Tinubu in 2027, the chairman said: “Not at all because it is the same people that voted for us in all the bye-elections and we won the majority. It is the same Nigerians that will vote at the next elections.

“Largely, they will still vote APC. Nigerians are impressed with our performance on the economy and social infrastructures provided.

“The economy is improving, security improving, access to education improving, and social security. So, Nigerians have been watching those landmark achievements by the president.”

PGF, Akpabio, Adeola commiserate with Yilwatda over mum’s death

The Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and the senator representing Ogun West, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi), have condoled with the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, on the passing of his mother, Mama Lydia Yilwatda.

PGF’s Chairman and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma delivered the forum’s condolence message to Yilwatda yesterday in Abuja.

In a statement he sent from Owerri, the Imo State capital, to the APC national chairman in Abuja, Governor Uzodimma noted that Mama Lydia passed on when her wise counsel and maternal presence were still greatly needed.

“Though she departed at the age of 83, Mama Lydia Yilwatda lived as a pillar of strength not only to her immediate family but also to the larger society. She embodied the Christian virtues of humility, patience, and compassion. Together with her husband, she laboured selflessly to raise her children both physically and spiritually, producing the remarkable successes we see today,” the statement said.

The PGF chairman urged Prof. Yilwatda and his family members to take solace in the impactful life Mama Lydia lived and to be comforted by the Christian hope of resurrection.

“As Christians, we believe that death is not an end but a transition to eternal life. With this hope, we are confident that you shall be reunited with your dear mother in Heaven.

“On behalf of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, I extend my heartfelt condolences to our National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and the entire Yilwatda family. May Mama Lydia’s gentle soul rest in peace.”

In a condolence message through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Senator Akpabio described the late Mama Lydia as “a caring and loving mother, who sacrificed for her children and the family at large”.

The Senate President noted that though Mama died at the ripe age of 83, her motherly care and counsel were still needed by her son and the current generation.

Akpabio said he was consoled by the fact that the late Mama Lydia lived a life of service and together with her late husband, Rev. Toma Yilwatda, played their roles diligently as parents, by “training their children, who are now contributing positively to the development of the society.”

The statement added: “Mama Lydia will forever be remembered for her legacies as a pillar of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), particularly the women’s wing, and the mother of the national chairman of the ruling party. Mama’s death is a big loss to the Yilwatda Family and the good people of Plateau State, but, indeed, the entire nation.

“I pray that the Almighty God will have mercy on Mama Lydia’s soul and also comfort the family at this time of grief. May Mama’s memories be a source of strength and inspiration during this period of mourning.”

Also, Adeola, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, conveyed the condolences in a statement by his media adviser, Chief Kayode Odunaro.

The senator expressed sadness “at the great personal loss suffered by the family”.

He described the departure of Mama Lydia Yilwatda as a great loss to Plateau and Nigeria.

“There is no doubt that the family of Professor Yilwatda lost a devoted matriarch and virtuous woman whose absence will create a vacuum.

“More importantly, the nation lost a great woman whose wise counsel would have been invaluable to present and upcoming generations,” Adeola said.

According to him, the deceased was a respected Christian and community leader who stood by her late clergy husband.

He added that the late Mama Lydia lived a fulfilled life of accomplishments and positive contributions to society.

Adeola prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and fortitude for the immediate family of the departed to bear the loss.

The national chairman expressed appreciation for the journalists’ condolence visit.

Assessing APC’s performance in the by-elections, Yilwatda noted that the party’s opposition leaders were  “roundly defeated,” even in their comfort zones by the candidates of the ruling party.

He said: “If you look at it, where the opposition leaders are, we all defeated them in all those locations: from Kaduna to Kano, to Adamawa, to Taraba. So, we just made it clear that our party is a leading party.

“We are also not just a ruling party, but we are the leading party and the preferred party in Nigeria and preferred by Nigerians.

“So, forget the rhetoric on television. We are not addressing television. We are addressing the people at the grassroots. Our policies are progressive in nature. So, we don’t address the bourgeois. We don’t address the rich. We address the poorest of the poor.

“That’s what our policies are. Our target is to ensure that Nigerians, not people on TV but Nigerians who believe in us, who have confidence in the party, who like progressive policies of the government, who like the bold steps taken by the government to ensure that we make changes and bring policies that are creating the real changes that have never been seen before in this country…
