  • Hiddink confident of Netherlands’ success

Guus Hiddink believes the Netherlands have plenty of reasons to be confident when they face Argentina in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals.

Louis van Gaal’s men booked their place in the last four in dramatic fashion on Saturday, beating Costa Rica 4-3 on penalties after 120 minutes of football ended goalless.

The most notable moment in the contest came when Van Gaal made the controversial decision to bring on substitute goalkeeper Tim Krul in favour of number one shot-stopper Jasper Cillessen for the shootout.

It was a move that paid dividends as Newcastle United star Krul made two crucial saves to ensure progress for the Netherlands.

Hiddink, who will take over from Manchester United-bound Van Gaal after the World Cup for a second stint in charge of the national side, praised the switch as “excellent.”

And the 67-year-old hopes the Netherlands can reach a second-successive final by beating Argentina in Sao Paulo on Wednesday.

Speaking of Van Gaal’s risky decision, Hiddink told De Telegraaf: “The technical team has done great preparation. [It was] a great example of teamwork.

“If you see the qualities of this team we should have confidence [against Argentina].

“Of course the Argentines have [Lionel] Messi who can do something crazy, but we have [Arjen] Robben who can do that too.”

  • Nigeria votes $1b to curb crude oil theft, says Jonathan

The Federal Government has earmarked one billion U.S Dollars for the implementation of a comprehensive programme to check crude oil theft, the vandalism of oil and gas infrastructure, and the apprehension and prosecution of crude oil thieves.

Speaking on Sunday at separate meetings with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mr. Mark Rutte and the Chief Executive Officer of Shell International, Mr. Ben van Beurden at The Hague, President Goodluck Jonathan said that a technical committee has already been set up to look into all aspects of the implementation of the programme.

This, the President said, will include further action to enhance the security of pipelines and other oil industry infrastructure, resolve community-related issues, boost youth empowerment in oil-producing areas and enhance the commitment of oil companies to the discharge of their corporate social responsibilities.

President Jonathan said that the fresh onslaught against oil theft planned by his administration will require the maximum co-operation of the international community, especially countries like the Netherlands which are major stakeholders in the global oil industry.

“Oil theft is an aspect of global terrorism, which has become a big industry on its own. It has become a major threat to the Nigerian economy and we need to work with all stakeholders to curb it. The thieves must be traced, apprehended and prosecuted”, the President who is in the Netherlands for the 2014 global Nuclear Security Summit said.

The Dutch Prime Minister assured the President of the commitment of the Netherlands to concerted action against crude oil theft and global terrorism.

Mr. Rutte who remarked that President Jonathan’s visit affirmed the strong ties between Nigeria and the Netherlands, also assured the President of the willingness of The Netherlands to collaborate more with Nigeria on environmental and security issues, particularly in the Niger Delta.

He praised Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting regional security in West Africa, and welcomed the signing of an agreement on immigration between both countries as well as the strong trade relations between Nigeria and The Netherlands.

“The President’s visit is an open testimony of the strong ties between Nigeria and Netherlands. Nigeria is Netherlands’ main trading partner in Africa and the Netherlands is the second biggest European investor in Nigeria,” the Dutch Prime Minister said.

  • Nigeria, Netherlands to strengthen trade ties

The Nigerian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Dr  Nimota Akanbi, has said efforts have been made to improve on the bi-lateral trade relationship between Nigeria and the Netherlands.

Speaking on the forthcoming Business and Investment Forum coming up in the Hague, Netherlands, she said in line with the transformation agenda of the Federal Government, efforts have been outlined to improve on the relationship, adding that the two countries would look into areas which can improve their economies.

“We are doing this in line with the transformation agenda of the Federal Government. President Goodluck Jonathan is committed to the attraction of Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) to Nigeria. Therefore, for us at the Embassy of Nigeria in The Hague, all hands must be on deck to achieve this.

“With every sense of modesty, we have been organising investment forums, but the one we are holding between June 4 and 7, this year, promises to be bigger. We are doing this in collaboration with the Hague-based Netherlands council for trade promotion and Nigeria-Netherlands Chamber of Commerce.

“The forum is aimed at re-invigorating and robustly expanding business partnership between Nigerian firms and entrepreneurs and their Dutch counterparts as well as with Dutch companies and firms.

“It is aimed at boosting trade and economic relations as well as promoting Dutch investment in Nigeria.

“Particular emphasis is being placed on investment and economic cooperation between Nigeria and the Netherlands and among the private sectors of the two countries,” she said.

The envoy said the forum would provide opportunity for Dutch companies and business organisations to negotiate and enter into joint venture or business agreements with their Nigerian counterparts on any area of business interest, including power and energy, oil and gas, agriculture, transportation, infrastructure, information and communication technology, mining and solid minerals, marine engineering, manufacturing, building and construction, tourism, entertainment industry and so on.

She said about 1,500 Dutch investors and 350 participants from Nigeria are expected.
