In December 2012, a medical student was fatally gang-raped in New Delhi. that incident brought spotlight on crimes against women in India.

The incident saw huge protests and resulted in new anti-rape laws in the country. However, brutal sexual attacks against women continue to be reported across India.

“Initial investigations indicate that all victims died of burn injuries. We are carrying out autopsies to determine the exact cause of their death.”

Delhi hosts India’s first Fifa tourney

The Under-17 World Cup will kick off in New Delhi, marking India’s first-ever Fifa tournament, world football’s governing body said on Monday despite initial concern over air quality in the world’s most polluted capital.

After a week-long inspection, authorities selected six cities across the country including Mumbai and New Delhi for the under-17 matches, Fifa said.

“The match schedule has been created following a thorough analysis of players’ health, competition format, team movements, weather, local festivities, geography and other factors,” said Jaime Yarza, head of Fifa tournaments, in a statement.

Last month Fifa Under-17 World Cup tournament director Javier Ceppi said that air quality in Delhi was a “serious concern”, particularly since the tournament will be held in the same month as the Diwali festival, when residents celebrate by setting huge amounts of fireworks.

Pollution levels spiked to record levels in Delhi around Diwali last year, forcing schools to shut as authorities ordered a series of emergency measures including a temporary ban on construction.

A 2014 World Health Organisation survey of more than 1 600 cities ranked Delhi as the most polluted.

Monday’s statement said at least eight matches would be held at each venue, with India’s football-mad city of Kolkata set to host the final at its Salt Lake Stadium.

While cricket is India’s No 1 sport, Kolkata is often regarded as the premier football city and it is just as common to see youngsters kicking a ball on the streets as wielding a bat.

India are currently 130th in the Fifa world rankings, wedged between minnows Suriname and the Dominican Republic and with little sign that an upturn in fortunes is around the corner.

The Under-17 World Cup will be held from October 6-28.

Burglars broke into Satyarthi’s empty flat in south Delhi Monday night, RK Singh, an officer at the local Kalkaji police station, said.

Satyarthi’s son discovered the theft when he visited the flat on Tuesday morning.

“It appears to be a forced entry, that investigations were at a preliminary stage and the intruder had not yet been identified,’’ the official said.

“Some jewellery and electronic goods have also been stolen, we are still assessing what is missing,’’ the official said.

The Nobel laureate is currently attending a conference in the United States.

Satyarthi’s organisation has rescued and rehabilitated thousands of child workers who were employed in hazardous industries.

Another Indian Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s 1913 prize medal for literature and citation were stolen from a museum in West Bengal state in 2004.

  • India celebrates Republic Day amid tight security

India showcased its military might and cultural heritage as it celebrated its 68th Republic Day on Thursday amid heavy security and terrorist threats.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin al-Nahyan was the chief guest at a military parade in New Delhi, the main attraction of national celebrations to commemorate the country’s 1950 constitution.

Nearly 50,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed across the city after intelligence warnings that terrorists could launch an air attack, by way of a drone or hijacking, or by disguising themselves as security personnel.

In India’s insurgency-hit north-east, militants’ triggered 11 low-intensity blasts, but there were no injuries or damage.

Seven of these were at “abandoned places” in Assam state, police chief Mukesh Sahay said, adding the police suspected the United Liberation Front of Assam for the explosions.

At the parade in Delhi, colourful floats depicted festivals from Indian states while the military displayed its armoury including tanks and supersonic missile systems.

The country’s Tejas fighter jet made its debut at the parade.

A contingent from the United Arab Emirates forces also marched along with Indian soldiers at the parade, which ended with a fly-past.

Security personnel were stationed on buildings along the parade route with anti-aircraft guns.

Other Indian cities and towns – particularly in the insurgency-hit Jammu and Kashmir and the country’s financial hub Mumbai, were also on alert and held celebrations under heavy security.

  • 17 dead as Indian police clear sect

Police in India said no fewer than 17 people, including two policemen, were killed during evacuation at a park occupied by a sect in northern part of the country.

More than 2,000 members of the semi-religious sect had occupied the park in Mathura for more than two years.

The police on Friday in New Delhi said that the park’s occupiers had resisted earlier court eviction orders, adding that the people were on Thursday warned on the latest eviction order by Allahabad High Court.

“Trouble began after some occupants armed with locally made pistols and rifles fired at the police,” local police officer, Arun Kumar, said.

Police initially responded with canes and tear gas “but had to finally open fire in retaliation,” he said, adding that many were injured.

“Additional forces were dispatched to the area as the situation remained tense,” Kumar said.

Mathura, 150 kilometres south-east of Delhi, is a prominent Hindu Holy city, home to several temples.

The evicted group was thought to be a faction of a Hindu religious organization that says it follows the 20th-Century freedom fighter, Subhash Chandra Bose.

Its demands include the scrapping of elections, almost free fuel, and replacing the rupee with a currency named after it.
