How shoppers, traders reacted to two-day markets’ closure

What would have made Lagos markets empty for two days if not the passing on of an esteemed market leader, the Iyaloja-General of Lagos State, Chief Abibatu Mogaji.

People didn’t find it easy, but they had to comply with the order, road side traders, wheel barrow pushers and others who had one business or the other in the markets, though reacted negatively, said they were paying their last respects.

The markets are always noisy with buying and selling taking place through the week, but for the two days, the reverse was the case. Traders said if they could mourn a colleague and stop buying and selling for a day, two days were not too much for the mother of market men and women in the state.

But for shoppers, it was a different ball game as many of them were found hanging around markets, lamenting not necessary the closure, but that they were caught unawares because there was no prior announcement. According to some of them who patronise the markets daily, they were starved for the two days the markets were shut.

Mrs Ronke Komolafe, a petty trader, doesn’t have enough money to stock her home with food stuffs; rather she buys her consumables daily to feed her children. “The two-day closure has made my children and I go hungry. As much as I wanted to honour our late mother, I wouldn’t want to starve my kids. I buy small quanities because I cannot afford to buy in bulk, but for these days of closure, I was forced to buy expensive items from stores,” she lamented.

However, some traders said the Alhaji Mogaji was a mother to them, describing her death as a shock, despite her ripe age.

The Majekobaje of Oyingbo Market Chief Abimbola Adeyemi described Mogaji as a beautiful woman who once came to their aassistance. “She was a wonderful and pleasant person, a mother to all Lagos market women. She contributed to the development of the market, advising us and putting us through what to do. We will observe a 40-day prayer for her after this.”

Mrs. Ali’s Shoremi, a trader at Mushin Ojuwoye Market, said the late Mogaji was a nice woman, who supported them financially. “She was our true mother, during pilgrimage periods, she assisted us financially and otherwise. We miss and love her, but God loves her most.”

Mrs. Esther Olayinka, a catfish seller at Mile 12 Market said she was sad when she heard the news. “My mother has died; though she died old and accomplished, no one prayed for this now,“ she said.

Some of the traders when counting their losses said they couldn’t compared life with anything else, but what they should have achieved in two days, would have been an advantage to them.

They, however, planned to recover what they lost by inflating the prices of some food items from last Wednesday. A trader at Ketu fruit market Mrs Nkechi Ukomadu said: “It is only natural that we sell a little higher than before to compensate ourselves. Do you realise what we have lost these two days? We are only introducing a marketing strategy.”

But Mrs Remilekun Adeoye refused to count her losses, saying anyone could be a die. “I can’t count my losses because we cannot compare money with life. Whatever I have lost does not move me a bit.”

Mr. Abdul Lahi Adegoye, a rice seller at Daleko Market, Lagos, said he lost about N50, 000 in the closure.

  • Sponsors of terror are mostly PDP members – ACN

Sponsors of terror are mostly PDP members – ACN

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has rejected any attempt by the presidency and the ruling PDP to portray the opposition party or its leadership as terrorism sponsors, saying all alleged sponsors of terror in Nigeria are either within the ruling party, the PDP, or somehow associated with it.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the presidency and the PDP should tell Nigerians the names of all those mentioned as sponsors of Boko Haram in a well-researched article in the journal of the New York-based World Policy Institute, entitled: ”Anatomy of African Terrorism: Boko Haram, Nigeria’s homegrown terror network.”

It said that a quick perusal of the article shows a former Nigerian Ambassador to Sao Tome and Principe and a serving Nigerian State Governor, all members of the PDP, as alleged terror sponsors.
”Contrary to the blatant falsehood being peddled by the presidency and the PDP, not one member of the ACN was mentioned in that document, which is available to those who are more interested in seeking the truth than calling the dog a bad name just to hang it.

”We abhor terrorism in all its ramifications, and have never and will never support terrorism under any guise. But our stand on Boko Haram is also well known to all fair-minded people whose thinking has not been clouded by political considerations: Terror has festered in our country largely because of widespread poverty/economic deprivation, massive unemployment, injustice and alienation of a large section of the society, all products of years of bad governance.

”For example, Nigeria is home to the largest number of out-of-school children in the world, according to UNESCO. What this means is that we are creating a large pool of possible recruits for terror.

”While these problems date back a long time, the rapacious PDP, which has ruled at the centre since our country’s return to democratic rule in 1999, and the painfully incompetent government of President Goodluck Jonathan have not made things better. It is therefore clear that as these evil twins PDP/Presidency) point one accusing finger at the ACN, four others are pointing at them,” ACN said.

Meanwhile, the party has expressed total satisfaction at the speed with which the presidency and the PDP, in separate statements, repudiated the part of the Boko Haram/Ansaru proscription Order that is deemed to be at variance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The assurances given by the two are exactly what the ACN had demanded in its earlier statement that called attention to the fact that the vague and open-ended Order could stifle the freedom of the press and tamper with the fundamental human rights of the ordinary Nigerian.

”After much rambling, the presidency’s statement on the issue said: ‘For the avoidance of doubt, the order is not meant to stop journalists from carrying out their duties or function of news gathering or reporting as they differ from terrorist activities. Rather, the order is out to criminalize acts of incitement by anyone, group of persons or institutions to commit terrorist acts through dissemination
    of terrorist information’.

”And when it is stripped of its now boring cliches, the statement from the PDP said: ‘For the avoidance of doubt, no section of the Order stifled the press; violated or seeks to violate any provision of the constitution. Instead the Order reinforced the provisions of the constitution guaranteeing the security and welfare of all Nigerians’.

”This clarification is exactly what we demanded in our statement, and we can now happily say our work is done. As usual, we choose to ignore the use of uncouth language, needless vituperation and accusations that are not empirically-grounded – which are now the hallmarks of a sinking residency/ruling party,” ACN said.

Cocaine pushers bag 20- year sentence

Justice Okechukwu Okeke of a Federal High Court, sitting in Lagos, on Friday sentenced two cocaine traffickers, Gabriel Obi and Godfrey Ugwu, to 20 years imprisonment each, over illicit drug deals in Lagos.

Justice Okeke held that the prosecution had discharged its burden of proof by proving its case beyond reasonable doubt.

“I do not believe the testimonies of the accused, when they alleged that they were business associates.

“The accused did not lead any evidence to substantiate the claims that they were actually partners doing genuine business.

“The accused are hereby convicted as charged.

“On count one, the accused are sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, while on counts two they are sentenced to five years imprisonment.

“The terms of imprisonment are to run concurrently,” Okeke ruled.

He added that the sentence of the first convict, Obi, would start running from the date of conviction, while he ordered the sentence of Ugwu to start running from March 3, 2011 when they were first arraigned.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arraigned the convicts, on a two-count charge of unlawful importation of 165 Kilogrammes of Cocaine from Bolivia into Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Agency arraigned the convicts on March 3, 2011, before the court.

They were arrested at the Murtala Mohammed Airport by the NDLEA, in January 2011, during clearance of passengers and the drugs recovered from them.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Brazil, Mr. Vincent Okoedion,  said there are over 500 Nigerians serving jail terms in Brazil for drug peddling and related offences, affirming that many  Nigerians are residing in the country without proper documentation .

Ambassador Okoedion , who disclosed this in an interview in Brasilia while meeting officials of Air Air, who were in the country to secure traffic rights from the Brazilian authorities to commence flights.
He said the high commission will continue to ensure that Nigerians in the country are engaged in legitimate business.
He said, ” We have many Nigerians who are in prison in this country. The numbers of Nigerians who are in prison in this country are about 500, including men and women. it is the group that are actually the main concern of the mission’ because we know that prison is not the place where our people should be in Brazil and what more they are the majority of Africans in prison in this country.

“So we visit them in prison especially during the festivals that are observed in this country like Easter and Christmas. We take to them essential items that they need like toiletries mainly. So they are the subject of on going discussions between the mission and the host government. We also hold meetings with the community to let them know that they should be law abiding and that the police would not go after them if they obey the law of the land. It is only when the police see them engaging in illegal activities that the police will harass them. And then we also know that we have to a credible community leadership or association. That way, it makes it easier for us to deal with them as a group. So we can work them through their leaders. So right now we are trying to organise elections both for Nigerians as a community and Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation .”

  • ‘Boko Haram members using fake military camouflage’

‘Boko Haram members using fake military camouflage’

The Nigerian Army on Friday in Abuja decried the rate at which the Boko Haram insurgents have been using fake military camouflage to attack civilians.

Maj.-Gen. Mobolaji Koleoso, the Chief of Civil- Military Affairs in the Nigerian Army, said this while briefing journalists on the security situation in the country.

He said the Army had observed with dismay the illegal possession and abuse of military camouflage by the Boko Haram insurgents.

“This trend is indeed worrisome, hence the need to enlighten the public to be cautious and report suspicious persons using illegal camouflage to relevant security agencies.

“A recent exchange of gun fire with the insurgents in the North Eastern part of the country which resulted in a large number of causalities on their side showed that the insurgents were dressed in fake military camouflage.

“For the unsuspecting populace, these insurgents would have been misconstrued as soldiers of the Nigerian Army,’’ he added.

Koleoso explained that the army had been erroneously accused of heinous crimes on innocent citizens, “not knowing that the Boko Haram insurgents have been the perpetrators of this dastardly act.’’

On the Daura attack in Katsina State, Koleoso said that the 35 Battalion of the Nigerian Army received a distress call at about 10 p.m. on Thursday and the troops moved into Daura to take charge of the situation.

He said that in the ensuing firefight, two soldiers were killed and an officer was shot and wounded.

According to him, two Boko Haram terrorist were killed, while three escaped with their vehicle but had an accident and died.

“Some quantities of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were recovered, while the two Golf cars used by the terrorists, 10 AK47 riffles and a large quantity of ammunition were recovered,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the Army chief as saying on Friday.

Koeloso said that some of the terrorists escaped with gun shots wounds and appealed to the public to report to the nearest security agency any person with bullet wounds.

  • FG, states, LGs share N721.51bn in April

FG, states, LGs share N721.51bn in April

… Excess Crude Account swells to $5.876bn

The Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) has distributed the sum of N721.51 billion among the three tiers of government for the Month of April.

This amount fell short of the N731.133 billion distributed in March by N9.628 billion or 1.3 per cent.

Addressing journalists shortly after the meeting, the Minister of State for Finance, Dr Yerima Ngama, disclosed that N89.738 billion was transferred to the Excess Crude Account bringing the balance to $5.876 billion.

He also stated that the gross revenue of N621.07 billion received for April was higher than the N595,70 billion received in the previous month by N25.362 billion.

This, increase in gross revenue he said, was due to, “the increased earnings from Domestic Crude and Petroleum Profit Tax.”

The minister, however, lamented that “the challenges of production and lifting operation experienced in the previous month persisted.”

A breakdown of the allocation contained in the communique issued after the meeting showed that N531.332 billion was shared under the statutory allocation disbursements. The federal government got N246.90 billion or 52.68 per cent; states N125.124 billion or 26.72 per cent while the local governments shared N96.466 billion.

N54.571 billion was allocated under Value Added Tax in the order of, federal government N7.85 billion representing 15 per cent; states N26.194 billion or 50 per cent while local governments got N18.336 billion or 35 per cent.

The sum N92.436 billion was used as augmentation in the month as a result of the revenue shortfall.

N35.549 billion was shared under the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) while the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) continued with its monthly payment of N7.617 billion owed the Federation Account which was also shared.

Similarly, the sum of N59.152bn was shared among the nine oil producing states based on the 13 per cent principle of derivation.

He said: “This is superlative and highly commendable outing by the president; all the enemies of Nigeria will be dumbfounded.”
