    NDLEA arrest 32 persons for drug abuse, sale in Borno

    The Borno Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Wednesday said it had arrested 32 persons for alleged drug abuse and sale.

    The Commamdant of the agency, Mr Ona Ogilegwu, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri.

    Ogilegwu said the command had also seized about 510 kilogrammes of various quantities of illicit drugs from the suspects.

    He said that the suspects were arrested in Galadima, Tashar Kano, Kasuwar Shanu and Bulumkutu areas of the state capital.

    “We have seized various quantities of illicit substances of hard drugs ranging from cannabis sativa, rophenol, diazepham, benelyn with codene and several other substances from the peddlers.

    ” Recently we have been to IDPs camps where we arrested many of the drug addicts and peddlers.

    “We also took our campaign to Dalori camp, Bakassi, Teachers village and Dikwa IDPs camps in the state capital to warn them against the dangers of illicit drug use.

    “We made some of these arrests at the Njimtilo check point, Njimtilo on Damaturu road and Gamborun Ngala road.

    Ogikegwu said the command had so far secured about 38 court convictions, 20 suspects were currently awaiting trial, while 9 suspects caught with minimum and negligible quantities of drugs were “counseled, rehabilitated, warned and released’’.

  • Accreditation, voting commence in Ondo poll

    The simultaneous accreditation and voting innovation adopted by INEC commenced on Saturday as voters gathered at polling units across Ondo State to choose their next governor.

    There was calm in Ondo West Local Government Area of the state as some voters were sighted queuing up to vote.

    As at 7:30 am, some residents were seen Boloerunduro, Owena, Oboto, Elemosho, Wasinmi and Ondo heading to polling units while there was the heavy presence of security men at various checkpoints.

    At Ward 7, Unit 20 in Ondo, voters were already at the polling unit although INEC staff were not yet at their duty post.

    Speaking with NAN at Ward 9 Unit 6,Ondo, a resident, Mr Sola Ajakaiye, commended government and INEC for putting in place adequate security measures to ensure peaceful election.

    In Igboroko Ward 2, Polling Unit 2, Owo, the Presiding Officer, Miss Busayo Olawale, said all logistics had been put in place to ensure a hitch-free poll.

    Similarly, at Igboroko Ward 2,Polling Unit 8,the Assistant Presiding Officer ,Mr Amos Ogunbodede, noted that the unit was only waiting for the starting time to commence the electoral process.

    In the same vein, Mr Fumen Nuhu, the Presiding Officer of Igboroko Ward 2,Polling Unit1, said that all logistic arrangement had been made.

    NAN also reports that voters were sighted casting their votes at Igboroko Ward 2,Unit1.

    However, at Ijebu Ward 4,Unit 9,the voters were disappointed because the card reader was not functioning as at 8:51 a.m.

    Speaking with NAN, the unit’s presiding officer, Miss Osidi Safia, said that the device would be repaired within five minutes.

    NAN reports that there was also a heavy presence of security personnel in all the polling units visited.

    In Akure, accreditation and voting also commenced simultaneously at Ward 4 Unit 12 and Obanla Bada’s House Unit 006 Ward 04.

    Some security agents as well independent observers were also sighted while voters were on the queue to ensure a smooth electoral process.

    NAN also reports that voting commenced at 8:11 a.m. at Unit 9 Ward 2, Sacred Heart Primary school 1 in Akure South Local Government Area.

    Speaking with NAN, Mr Bello Ameen, the Presiding Officer, said all the materials were set and working perfectly.

    He urged the voters not to panic if the card reader did not recognise any of the fingers as they would still be allowed to vote.

    No fewer than 1,280,580 voters with Permanent Voter Cards would decide who the governor would be out of the 28 contestants in Saturday’s governorship election.

    Although 1,659,186 voters were registered for the election, 378,606 did not turn up to collect their PVCs.

    Among the major contestants are Mr Eyitayo Jegede of the PDP, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu of the APC, Dr Olu Agunloye of the Social Democratic Party and Olusola Oke of the Alliance for Democracy.

    Others include the candidate of the Accord Party, Mr Oladare Amuda, Mr Yinka Orokoto of the Action Alliance, the candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria and Chief Adetuwo Ogunjumelo.

    Also in the race are the candidate of the Citizens Popular Party, Mr Peter Fasua, the candidate of the Labour Party, Adeuti Stephen and the candidate of the Peoples Party of Nigeria, Mrs Temidola Olagbegi.

    Speed limit device: FRSC issues warning tickets to 41,381 defaulters

    The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Friday issued warning tickets to 41,381 commercial drivers nationwide who defaulted in the implementation of the Speed Limiting Device.
    Mr Bisi Kazeem, FRSC’s Head of Media Relations and Strategy, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the compliance level for 43,433 vehicles was checked nationwide, out of which 2,273 vehicles complied, while 41,381 were yet to comply.
    Kazeem said that tickets were issued to the 41,381 yet to comply with the implementation, adding that the corps had recorded above five per cent compliance level nationwide within two weeks.
    He said the corps had commenced the advisory enforcement of the device which was more of subtle force, on Oct. 1, 2016
    “Like we explained, subtle force is a sought of enforcement approach that entails us stopping commercial vehicles and finding out whether they have installed the speed limiting device.
    “If they have not, a ticket is issued to that offender, it is called free safety check and it is to warn that you have been verified not to have installed the device.
    “Progressively as at now, 43,433 vehicles have been checked and the number with the device is 2,273, unfortunately, this is low, though in some sought, it is encouraging .
    “So far, Cross Rivers is leading in the compliance list with 277 installation record; Enugu State is second with 227; Akwa/Ibom has 184; while Kogi has 172 and Lagos came fifth with 145,’’ the FRSC spokesman.
    Kazeem said the implementation process was categorised into 36 states and the FCT, and as at Oct.14, five states were leading in the compliance level.
    He said Cross Rivers, Enugu and Akwa/Ibom ,however, increased the number of states that had begun the implementation of the device order given by the FRSC.
    NAN recalls that Rivers and Kogi had last week begun the implementation and are leading other states in the compliance level.
    Kazeem said that the corps would continue to check and give warning tickets to commercial vehicles that defaulted as well as encourage them to do the right thing.
    He advised fleet operators that had installed the device already to calibrate it and upload it with the FRSC so as ensure full compliance .
    He also urged the unions to continue to support the scheme and comply with it fully before February 2017 when the corps would begin strict enforcement.

    FCT bans herdsmen, hawkers, others in Abuja

    The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Muhammad Bello has restated that begging, street hawking, cattle grazing and commercial motorcycle (Okada) remain banned. It said the ban must be enforced by the security agents.

    Bello said this after an emergency FCT Security Committee meeting held in Abuja on Monday.

    According to him, the FCT Administration will continue to collaborate with the security agencies to ensure that the ban is made effective.

    Bello said that the institutions must be strengthened to carry out their statutory duties in line with the Change agenda of the Federal Government.

    He, however, commended the security community in the FCT for the high-level intelligence sharing that had so far assisted the administration to nip in the bud any security breach in the territory.

    The committee condemned the illegal attempt by some criminals who stormed the Vocational and Rehabilitation Centre, Kuchiko in Bwari Area Council, trying to rescue some of the inmates following the arrest of 687 beggars/destitute.

    The committee also decried the illegal use of uncompleted buildings by destitute people, miscreants and criminals in the city, warning that owners of such property would be held responsible for any security breach traced to their property.

    The minister reiterated that owners of such uncompleted buildings must provide security in and around such property and also ensure the cleanliness of the surrounding areas.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that FCT Permanent Secretary, Dr. Babatope Ajakaiye, FCT Police Commissioner, Commandant, Guards Brigade, Garrison Commander, heads of Navy and Air Force in the FCT and Director of FCT DSS attended the meeting.

    Others were Chairmen of the six FCT Area Councils, Coordinator, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) as well as Mandate Secretaries, Ona of Abaji and the heads of para-military organs in the FCT.

  • Underage family planning is dangerous — Doctor

    Dr Gbolahan Oyebambi of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) has said that family planning for underage is dangerous for the health and future of the children.

    Oyebambi, who made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin on Wednesday, warned against the common practice of underage family planning in the country.

    According to him, some girls under the age of 18 are fond of doing family planning to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

    He added that family planning was the safest way to prevent unwanted pregnancies among married couples.

    The doctor said some parents were aware of their children’s wayward ways and aided them by seeking family planning options for them.

    “When a girl of 17 year-old knows she is safe to be sexually active, it will make her misbehave and be wayward without any fear,’’ he said.

    He warned parents not to encourage the use of pills for their underage children, adding that “it was evil and suicidal’’.

    The doctor also advised medical practitioners to seek proper clarifications before adopting any family planning method for patients.

    Oyebambi called on government to reach out to the public through the media, schools, religious houses and hospitals to discourage such practices in the society.

    “It is time for the three tiers of government to take a boldstep to save the future of our female children by campaigning against underage family planning,’’ he said.

    NDLEA arrests man with methamphetamine

    The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said it has arrested a man with parcels of methamphetamine (an addictive stimulant) valued at N31 million at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

    In a statement on Wednesday, the agency said the suspect was arrested during outward screening of passengers on a South African Airline flight to Johannesburg.

    “The parcels of drug tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed 3.435 kg with a street value of N31 million,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the agency as saying in the statement.

    “The drug was detected during a routine check on a passenger on South African Airline flight to South Africa.

    “Two bags belonging to a man (names withheld) a 45-year-old, were found to contain parcels of methamphetamine.

    “Inside the bags were food items, ingredients and clothes, but underneath were a thin parcel of narcotics carefully concealed.

    “He was immediately arrested, investigation is ongoing,’’ the agency said.

    NDLEA said the suspect, who resides in South Africa, claimed that the bags were given to him by a friend.

    Meanwhile, the NDLEA Chairman, Mr Muhammad Abdallah, has warned members of the public to beware of new tricks employed by drug trafficking cartels.

    “Drug traffickers recruit mules by enticing them with money.

    “They are very clever in concealing drugs, the agency now detects drugs in bags, electronics, foodstuff and clothes among others.

    “We strongly advise that all passengers should endeavour to pack their bags themselves and avoid taking bags for others.

    “Ignorance is no excuse in drug trafficking. The suspect will be charged with  unlawful exportation of narcotics,’’ Abdallah said.

  • Cleric attributes cases of kidnapping to joblessness

    The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Adewale Martins, on Wednesday urged government at all levels to create job opportunities, to curtail rising cases of kidnapping in the country.

    Martins gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

    He said that the increasing incidents of kidnappings including monarchs by the youths should be seen as the direct effect of joblessness.

    “In the first instance, I do not think that anything should make an individual to take away the freedom of another individual.

    “Only the state has the right as it were, to restrict people’s freedom, and therefore kidnapping cannot be justified in any way, it is not right.

    “However, we know that there are certain circumstances that make people to toe that line of life such as the poverty that is there in the land.”

    “And I believe that as far as government is concerned, it ought to make efforts to create more employment opportunities for people.

    “Ensure that it creates environment that will make people to even make effort in creating their own employment facilities and opportunities.

    “These are the kind of things that I hope will be able to help,” the clergyman said.

    Flood wreaks havoc in Bauchi State

    No fewer than 12 persons have been confirmed dead while valuable property were destroyed by flood, which ravaged parts of Ganjuwa and Giade Local Government Areas of Bauchi State.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident occurred in the remote areas of the two councils late on Sunday, following a downpour.

    It was learnt that eight persons died at Gulbuk in Giade council area while the remaining four deaths were recorded in Gala-Makera and Galam Baba villages in Ganjuwa council.

    A source said that the corpses of the deceased including children were recovered by some good Samaritans in various locations in the affected areas.

    Alhaji Aliyu Ahmad, Permanent Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), told reporters on Tuesday in Bauchi that a team of experts from the agency had visited the affected areas.

    Ahmad said that the team was still in the areas to assess the level of damage and assured that details would be made available to newsmen later.

    JAMB set to upload names of successful candidates

    The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it will soon commence the uploading names of candidates who have been offered admission into tertiary institution on their website.

    The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

    According to him, the board will ensure that Nigerian children are not unjustly denied admission in any institution of their choice.

    He said that the names of candidates that had satisfactorily met the admission rules and regulations of the institutions and that of the Federal Government would be uploaded soon.

    “We have just concluded a five-day Technical Committee meeting on Admission that started on Aug. 22 at the Bayero University Kano.

    “A lot was deliberated upon and at the end everything came out successful.

    “We have ensured that the admissions are done in line with the set rules and regulations as provided by the Federal Government and the various institutions.

    “We are aware that the function of admission of candidates is solely the job of the Senates of institutions and what we do as a board is to see the guidelines used in admitting the candidates and ensure ratification.

    “We are passionate about ensuring that no candidate that meets any of the admission rules and guidelines as provided by both the institution and government is denied admission for whatever reason,’’ he said.

    The Registrar of the board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, had at the opening of the meeting said that admissions would be carried out based on guidelines approved for each institution by their respective proprietors.

    He also said that preference expressed for the institutions and courses by the candidates would also be followed.

    Abducted Kaduna lawmaker regains freedom

    The Police on Wednesday confirmed the release of Ibrahim Ismail, a member of Kaduna State House of Assembly, who was abducted from his residence on Tuesday.

    The Kaduna State Police Command spokesman, ASP Aliyu Usman, made the confirmation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

    Usman said the lawmaker was released on Wednesday evening and had reunited with his family.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lawmaker, who represents Tudun Wada constituency in the state Assembly, was abducted at his residence in Abapka area of Kaduna metropolis.

    The police spokesman did not however say whether ransom was paid before Ismail’s release of if any of the kidnappers was arrested.

    Usman assured residents of the police commitment to protect lives and property, and urged them to volunteer information on the movement of criminals, to make the society safe.
