Biafra, Democracy Day dominate Google search

Nigerians took to Google during the week to know more about Biafra and the history of democracy in Africa’s most populous nation.

Google’s Spokesman Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade made the announcement in Lagos on Thursday.

Kola-Ogunlade, who is Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager for Anglophone West Africa, said the searches were apparently to know more about Biafra.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some groups observed a sit-at-home protest on May 30, to commemorate the 50th anniversary since the Biafra uprising ended.

Kola-Ogunlade said that Nigerians searched for Democracy Day, Biafra News, Biafra Day, Tiger Woods, Ernesto Valverde and Paul Pogba in the search engine.

According to him, a group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has rejected May 29 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, describing it as fraudulent, unrealistic and escapist.

“The group asked the Federal Government to declare June 12 as Democracy Day instead.

“May 29 was chosen by the last military regime of Gen. Abdul Salaam Abubakar.

“Nigerian researched more on the topic on Google search using the terms: ‘when is democracy day in Nigeria.’

The spokesman said that Nigerians also searched for: “why do we celebrate democracy day in Nigeria.

“History of democracy day in Nigeria and democracy day 2017”.

The searches commenced on May 25 and ended on May 31.

Kola-Ogunlade said there was total shutdown in Nigeria’s South East on May 30, following the Indigenous People of Biafra’s sit-at-home order.

He said that the order was to mark the 50th anniversary of the declaration of the defunct Republic of Biafra and also to honour heroes and heroines of the liberation struggle.

The Google chief said that the sit-at-home order was totally complied with in the five states in the South East.

Kola-Ogunlade explained that people searched Google using terms such as ‘Biafra news today’, ‘Biafra latest news’, ‘radio Biafra news’ and ‘radio Biafra’.

The spokesman said that Golf superstar, Tiger Woods’ arrest and charge for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) by the police in Florida on May 29 also trended on Google.

He said that the former golf world number one had to deal with a fresh blow as he struggled to resurrect his career.

“Nigerians went on Google to search for ‘Tiger Woods net worth’, ‘Tiger Woods arrested’, ‘Tiger Woods news’, ‘DUI’ and ‘Serena Williams’.

The Google chief said that Barcelona FC President, Josep Bartomeu, on May 29 officially confirmed the appointment of Ernesto Valverde as the club’s new head coach, replacing Luis Enrique.

Kola-Ogunlade said that sports fanatics Googled ‘Ernesto Valverde profile’, ‘Barcelona’, ‘Who is Ernesto Valverde’ and ‘Barcelona new coach.’

He also said that Paul Pogba’s visit to Mecca to give thanks for a good season trended on Google.

“Paul Pogba visited Islam’s holiest city, Mecca this week to pray and offer his appreciation for a successful season with Manchester United and to mark the beginning of Ramadan.

“Nigerians visited Google to search ‘Paul Pogba religion’, ‘Is Paul pogba a Muslim’, ‘Paul Pogba profile’ and ‘Paul Pogba biography’,” Kola-Ogunlade said.

Google Trends launched in May, 2006, allows one to see how popular search terms and their demography have been overtime on the search engine.

The Police Command in Enugu State is to collaborate with stakeholders to implement the Federal Government’s Safe School Initiative in primary and secondary schools starting from June.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Ebere Amaraizu, made the plan known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Tuesday.

“The command has concluded arrangements to partner principals and proprietors of public and private secondary schools in Enugu State to promote and maintain sustainable safety of lives and properties in our schools.

“The command will also collaborate with the state Ministry of Education and Post Primary School Board, among other bodies,” Amaraizu said.

Schools and pupils have been subjects of attack by kidnappers, who have often demanded huge ransoms from relations of their victims to ensure their releases.

The threat to the safety of school children came to the fore in 2014 when more than 200 schoolgirls in Government Secondary School Chibok, Borno, were kidnapped by Boko Haram insurgents.

Boroh, who is also the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, spoke on the occasion of the Children Day celebration.

“These values will make a good citizen out of a child and each priceless value is gained from home, which is the child’s first school and foundation.

“Children tend to learn these qualities at home through observation, suggestion and influence,” he said.

The presidential aide said that parents and guardians play a major role in shaping their children’s future.

To this end, he stressed the need for proper education which, according to him, plays a major role in developing a child’s mental faculty.

“To educate means to train the mind, character and abilities of individuals.

“Education is a fundamental human right that should be availed to all citizens irrespective of age, sex and nationality.

“There are a lot of human right instruments that provide for education as a fundamental right, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948)”.

He explained that the importance of education in the life of a child could never be overemphasized.

“In both spiritual and temporal or mundane aspects of human existence, education is paramount,’’ Boroh added.

Police confirm arrest of IPOB, MASSOB members

The Police in Ebonyi on Saturday confirmed the arrest of some members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in various part of the state for alleged unlawful sensitization programme.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Jude Madu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday that the arrested suspects also included members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).

Madu said that the suspects were arrested for unlawfully sensitizing the public to stay at home on May 30, in observance of the group anniversary.

“They would be charged to court and the command would ensure that they are duly prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

“IPOB and MASSOB are illegal groups and did not get permission from the police to embark on such exercise which threatens the peace and security of the state.

“The command with the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Titus Lamorde, has commenced intensive sensitization of the populace to disregard the sit-at-home directive and go about their lawful businesses,” he said.

Madu warned members of the group not to carry out outlawed activities within the state before, during and after May 30, as the full weight of the law would be brought on any defaulter.

“Any person or group found culpable would be arrested and duly prosecuted as the groups’ activities amount to mutiny or fighting a sitting and legally recognized government.

“IPOB and MASSOB are techniques developed by some individuals to gain public interest and recognition as the former is even a breakaway organ of the latter.

“These groups have not provided amenities or other forms of social security for the people they are directing to stay at home; it shows that their intentions are not sincere and must be rejected by all,” he said.

He advised the groups that not everybody was interested in issues concerning secession as people still remember the horrors of the civil war and other upheavals in the country after then.

According to him, they should realize that most people are not interested in their preaching, therefore, they should not force anybody to be involved in their illegal and unlawful practices.

Madu called on traditional rulers and town unions across the state to assist the police in sensitizing the people and provide relevant information about the group’s activities.

“The command has distributed various call contacts (numbers) to the public to report activities of these groups within this period, especially molestation, if they refuse heeding to the stay-at home order.

“Any gathering of two or more people propagating the IPOB/MASSOB messages or executing related activities should be promptly reported to the police for immediate actions,” he said.

A NAN Correspondent who visited the state police command reports that the arrested IPOB members were upbeat and chanting solidarity songs.

Now, we are abreast of the usefulness of such ingredients required to prepare some meals and they have become a part of us, they said.

They, however, advised the organizers to provide a more spacious auditorium that could accommodate more representatives from other schools in future.

Mrs Abidemi Amida, a teacher from Lekki Peninsular College, advised the museum’s management to always provide cooking utensils for participating schools because of the hazards of moving them.

“I observed that my students enjoyed every bit of the competition but I want the management to provide the cooking utensils next time because it is difficult  moving them here from our school,’’ she said.

Another teacher, Mrs Opeyemi Abesin from Bittaqwa School in Ajah, said the competition was an interesting experience for her as she learnt new cooking techniques from it.

“I look forward to bringing my students again to compete in the competitions. It should be organised for them every term,’’ she said.

Miss Itunu Akande, also a teacher from Starlight Model School, Alagbado in Ijaye area of Lagos State, wanted more schools to be involved in the competitions.

She said that the museum’s management should create more awareness among schools about it.
